Sony A80J TV Review (2021) - A Rival To The LG C1?

  • After testing the popular Sony A90J, we bought and tested the Sony A80J! It's a lower-end model compared to the A90J, but how does the A80J perform? Like any OLED, it delivers exceptional picture quality, but it still lacks in gaming features we usually see on high-end TVs. Can it compete with the popular LG C1?

    Just ordered the A80J, was going to order the LG C1 because even though I’m not a gamer, the price of the C1 was nearly $500 less than the A80J. The very next morning Sony dropped the price of the A80J by $400. Needles to say I canceled my order for the C1 and ordered the A80J. I think I will be very happy with this choice. Sony just makes a better quality product and the picture quality is better than the C1.

      congrats I just ordered 65" A80J for 1600 Euro black Friday :) andd in HDR highlights its punchier closer to reference monitor as C1 or G1 as well :) due to Sony XR processor; this year Sony nailed it. In near blacks it is cleaner as C1 buttt C1 has more better dark near blacks due to more near blacks calibration controls, generally A80j looks cleaner here anyhow. A80J leads in motion, key picture movie watching features, so nailed mine movie watching target ;) enjoy bro

      @@Esignn … It is my opinion but I’ve been buying Sony televisions for 50 years so I have a lot of experience with their product. It’s hard to tell the difference between one television and another made by another company until you really watch them side by side. Comparing the A80J to LG’s C1 I felt the picture quality was better, if I was into gaming I may have chosen the LG because of the 2.1 HDMI ports Sony has 2 while LG had 4.

      i was in a very similar situation to you. I was so close to getting the C1 and it was a price difference of $800. Then after speaking with a dealer, I got the good deal where it became only $300 more than the C1, so I got it. Reason I preferred the A80J over the C1 was because I preferred the google tv smart interface over webOS and secondly I like the idea where the A80J can be put in a position where you can fit a soundbar underneath whereas the C1 was not possible.

    The A80J is under the A90J but that doesn't make it a lower end model compared to the A90J. In fact, everything about it is the same except for contrast pro which utilizes a heat sink. The colors have a better white balance than the A80J which has darker colors. Comparing apples to apples. Sony has the most realistic colors because of the X1 processor that's inside every Sony camera used in Hollywood studios. This is how it knows what color to apply to a picture where as LG & Samsung try to estimate. LG has overly dark colors while Samsung has overly bright colors. The only TV that has superior gaming features is LG because of the Nvidia graphics chip sync.

    I bought an A80J and a soundbar thinking that a soundbar would always be better than built in tv speakers. The A80J's built in sound system ended up being far better than the soundbar. @@lyranlover6904 I'm not sure. If you don't have the tv yet just see if the tv speakers are good enough for you. My issue with them was that they weren't very bass heavy and there was not a lot of surround, which is why I upgraded to a q950a as it came with a subwoofer and surround rear speakers to fit those shortcomings. The center and left and right channels are very clear and crisp on the tv though, so I'm not sure how much a standalone soundbar could improve that experience. Also, the htx 8500 was a lot more narrow than the width of my TV so it had a much smaller soundstage compared to my TV, whereas the q950a is about as wide as my TV.

    @rtings , Just a bit of feedback: Turning the processing features off of a Sony is the equivalent of not making use of the gaming features on an LG and saying it's gaming performance is equivalent to a Sony. I can almost guarantee you if you're getting a similar PQ between a C1 and an a80j it's because You're not making use of the processing in an effort to make them look as close as possible.
    Not showing the full capabilities of each TV is extremely misleading and making the assumption that users don't make use of a processor is just as silly as assuming they aren't using gaming features. Neglecting to say that the Sony is capable of far greater clarity and detail due to more advanced processing isn't a little thing. The Cognitive processor is not a gimmick and it's a significant step up from anything the lg can do.
    I'm usually the person that friends and family come to for TV recommendations and as much as I love what you guys are doing small things like this are why I often send people elsewhere to see reviews.

      @RTINGSdotcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hey Evan!
      First, thanks for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We can tell you that we're working on an update to our methodology so we can talk more about the upscaling and processing of the different TVs. It's tough to objectively measure, which is why the testing is very limited at this time. We've heard loud and clear from our readers and viewers on this though and we're looking into it as we speak!

    • @evaloutionofman
      @evaloutionofman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@RTINGSdotcom that's terrific and thank you for your hard work. Sorry in advance for the tldr:
      While I would agree it's very difficult to objectively evaluate certain aspects of processing quantitatively, the differences between them can be qualitatively discussed.
      For instance a Cognitive processor much like our own visual system is able to evaluate contrast, tonality, motion and other parameters in a parellel fashion and with that information adust them in relation to each other(in real time with focal zones).
      This allows for a much more natural adjustment and this explains why the new Sony tvs can be pushed significantly more as far color and clarity without that artificial look that would destroy PQ in previous generations.
      Sony accurately describes this as increasing immersion in their branding and while it may sound like a gimmick, I can tell you as someone that studied cognition academically, from a perceptive standpoint that is exactly what they are doing.
      Obviously you would want to simplify this and not use my technical jargon, but it allows you to bypass the more subjective aspects of evaluating PQ by simply stating factually relevant info.

      A80J 77 inch cost £3999 I think the choice is pretty clear for me now.OLED all the way.
      Go to your local store and check once again A80J OLED and X90J LED and I believe you will choose OLED like me.😉

    The banding in games skies is also in 60hz and on other TVs (LG OLEDs, Samsung KS8000) so can you check other TVs and see if it's an issue either with the console or the games themselves? I don't currently have other TVs other than those to test. I used Forza Horizon 4 on Xbox Series X looking at a bright clear sky.
    Also smooth gradation on medium cleans it up nicely without too much detail loss.

      Don't worry about burn-in, you have to be watching the same thing (such as a channel with the ID logo in the top corner) for hundreds of hours non-stop, for it ever to become an issue. It's so unlikely I don't know why they even mention it at all.

    As for this year's Sony models, I am disappointed they don't take full advantage of PS5. This is the second model release year for Sony and they still lack all PS5 features while other TV companies fully support PS5.
    I guess I'll wait till next year before buying a Sony TV to see if they finally do full PS5 support or not.

Now I’m finding out that to use 4K 120fps I’ll need a 100 mbps. Will the Xbox be the better console once vet is added? I’m so lost about this stuff could you please elaborate?

    • @shmookins
      @shmookins 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dustinsharpe1049 The thing is, VRR either limits or completely shuts down some of the TV features like local dimming, Dolby Vision, and what not. I don't know of any TV that does VRR while maintaining all the TV's features. Maybe one of the LGs. _Maybe_.
      VRR is still new. Sony doesn't even have the update yet for their latest flagship LCD model. It will come at the end of Jan. 2022. But I feel it will be the same as on their current models that just got the VRR software update.
      As for Xbox, it isn't about the consoles themselves as far as I'm aware. I think it is all on the TV to run it properly. Also, the MediaTek TV chip is a bottleneck. Sony uses those. Samsung and LG use their own chip but they still have their own limitations.
      Now, this isn't a big deal, really. You won't even notice anything unless you know what to look for and have different TVs side by side. You have the best TV purchase and you should fully enjoy it.
      It's just that personally, buying a TV is a big purchase for me, and I find it odd that the company that makes PS5 and TVs can't simply be the best option in gaming hands down. They are getting better though. The latest update has some unique PS5 features that you only get if you have a compatible Sony TV and a PS5 which is something.
      By the way, I was aiming on getting the 65: X95J myself. But following its news closely, I got disappointed by a thousand cuts. Now I'll wait for the X96J's successor next year- unless Sony doesn't change anything for the 2022 models.
      We'll know what Sony and the rest of the TV makers do for their 2022 models at CES on Jan. 5th. Fingers crossed.

    @reeanimationgaming1034 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    No… Guys listen..
    I’ve had this tv for 2 days now. And it is not so great as these youtube channels makes it out to be.
    1.
    First of all, It seriously lags brightness/shadow controls. It’s super dark, and is clearly crushing blacks. And the brightness setting is at MAX by default, so you can’t turn that up. You will have to rely on turning up the dark areas by cranking up the gamma setting, and even that isn’t enough to bring back the details in the shadows. Other settings like black level will just turn the black into grey, and not bring back the details.
    Turning all these shadow setting up will also brightn up the highlights. I mean, it looks good and all, but it lack control over the shadow parts, and I don’t want to turn on all kinds of dynamic post processing… I had much more control over my old LG OLED from 2016.
    2.
    Another thing is the hdr tone mapping. Somtimes it looks better ON, other times it looks worse, and it is also a dynamic scene by scenes post process that I would recommend leaving off, even though this makes the image much dimmer.
    3.
    The peak illuminance only has 3 settings, and I suppose this is the setting for HDR brightness, again, lack of control, and is this a pr scenes dynamic effects? I don’t know.. This HAS to be ON though, as that is the only way to get proper brightness for the HDR.
    4.
    The nexflix calibrated mode, puts a green/orange tint on everything making it look like a very warm color setting. Turn off at all costs.
    5.
    The auto PS5 calibration also ruins the image on the PS5, as HDTVTEST is talking about.
    6.
    It keeps loosing internet connection, making netflix stop and buffer very often.
    7. And also. The audio. Please stop saying that you won’t need a soundbar with this tv. The sound is not a lot better than my 2016 tv, and build in subwoofer? I honestly don’t hear it. So guys, don’t believe all this promotional talk. It’s not like that in real life.
    8.
    The tv can NOT play video files probably from a USB, it stutters, and often the tv crashes just by browsing stuff on the usb. I had to turn the tv off many times because it crashed. And often it came back on with a 50% grey empty screen, then I had to turn it off again. Horrible experience..
    When that is said, I downloaded the MX player, and used that for browing and watching USB media, and that works like a charm 👌
    I have only had this tv for two days, and NONE of the reviews are talking about these problems, and I have watched them all before buying this tv.
    I’m not hating this tv, I had LG before, but that tv I kind of didn’t like, it also had a ton of problems, so I’m not a fanboy or out just to spread hate. I will keep this tv, because it was on sale, and I wanted something else than LG. And this has all the apps and features I need..
    I’m just saying, be aware, it’s not the holy grail as these channels makes it out to be.
    Feel free to ask me about this tv 🙂

There's a lot of distortion at the TV's max volume, but it's much better at moderate volume levels. However, distortion depends on the content and not everyone can hear it.

      It depends on what you're looking for! First, if you prefer the slim design of the G1 and want to wall mount it, that could be a factor to consider.
      Otherwise, it would depend on your usage! The LG has more gaming features like lower input lag and VRR support, but the Sony should get VRR in a future firmware update. The LG has the new evo panel, allowing it to get brighter in HDR, but the Sony still gets a bit brighter in SDR.

    I'm confused to which one to get now, the C1 or A80J, I do plan on gaming on it but I'm not an obsessed gamer, I do like games like Assassin's Creed. Any advice??

      The Sony A80J OLED and the LG C1 OLED are amazing TVs capable of turning pixels off individually to produce deep inky blacks with a near-infinite contrast ratio. You can't go wrong with either, but they do have some differences. The LG offers a bit more for gamers, with two more HDMI 2.1 ports than the Sony and it has lower input lag. The Sony, however, has better out-of-the-box accuracy, although this can vary from unit to unit. That said, it may help to check out this comparison, but honestly, you'll be happy either way! www.rtings.com/tv/tools/compare/lg-c1-oled-vs-sony-a80j-oled/21421/21563?usage=1&threshold=0.10

    Does the A80j support TV led dolby vision? Or is it still using the "low latency profile" that has been around for a few years now?

    A private retailer is selling this tv (55in) for $1,150 CAD but it has a scuff mark that is noticeable when the tv is off but not when it's on. Should I consider getting this TV at that price with the minor cosmetic mark? Thanks!

    Does the Sonos ARC fit when using feet?

      I’ve just purchased the 55”A80j and Sonos arc. With the stand in the soundbar position, it doesn’t fit between the legs but I’ve actually stood it on top of the legs. There’s just enough of a gap so it doesn’t foul the screen. It goes slightly above the bezel and maybe a few mm of the screen but nothing at all noticeable, it actually looks like it was made to fit if I’m honest.

    How easy or complicated is to get neutral or warmer color temperature instead of this cold blue one ? Only manualy, without professional calibration. Parents 50X85J looks very neutral, no problem with tendency to be cold / blue. But while it has some flaws (tendency to wash out brighter colors a bit or to have some "pastel" hue, too bright even with brightnes set to min) I'm looking forward A83J. But I'm afraid there can be another, maybe more annoying flaws (for significantly higher price ..).

      you woudn't be able to see how it looks otherwise becasue you're watching this video through not only a compressed video on the internet, but also another screen.
