@@northyorkshirers500special2 Paul did you ever have any interest in the Nissan Skyline R32's that raced against the Sierras in Australia ? . Love your cars 👍👍✌
Such a privilege to watch this Sierra RS500 with Dick Johnson at the wheel for the Australian Touring Car Championship in the late 80's and early 90's... The famous car no. 17. Great car, fantastic driver (Dick Johnson) and such a great time for Australian Motorsport...
I love the way that you two have spoken so highly of Dick Johnson who is a lovely guy and a very talented racer. It’s great to see that this car is being lived and looked after, and Bathurst 1000 is an amazing race and one of the hardest on cars and drivers and the heat was the hardest thing on the 500’s
Gotta say a special thank you... I always followed Dick Johnson as a kid and always said that this was the fastest and best car to race in australia under that class of racing and it proved itself to be the best in England as well.. Such an iconic car I'm glad someone has it and values such an important part of Australian motorsport history.
G'day lads, I remember when Dick first wheeled the Sierra out in Australia, he struggled at first with all sorts of problems. Like you say, blown turbos, other engine dramas, and of course the diff issues. It was a program of continuous development. Once Dick decided to develop the cars completely in house then things really changed. He worked with Ron Harrop to develop the diff, and employed local experts to develop a new electronic management system to end the reliance on UK programs, which were being sourced from Andy Rouse at the time. To this day Dick doesn't have anything nice to say about Andy Rouse. 1988 was an amazing season for the DJR Shell Sierras, they were practically untouchable. But it wasn't long before other local Sierra teams played catchup, Glenn Seton's Peter Jackson cars, Tony Longhurst's Benson & Hedges cars (one of which was in the last video at Paul's), Colin Bond's Caltex car, and Allan Moffat's ANZ cars were all super competitive at different times over the next couple of years. Dick maintained a slight advantage but never enjoyed total dominance like he had in 1988. Of course in 1990 the 4WD Nissan GTR made it's first appearance, and once Fred Gibson and the Nissan team got that car sorted out in 1991 the dominance of the Sierra was over. It's noteworthy that the DJR cars (#5 and #6 I suppose they were by then) were the only cars that had any chance of mixing it with the GTRs - it's been claimed by some (including Dick himself) that for Bathurst qualifying and Top Ten runoff in 1992 his Sierras were developing over 700hp, which is just incredible. You can see from footage of his Top Ten lap he had it wound right up and it looked like a right handful to drive. What a machine eh? It's good to see Dick is enjoying some success again now as part owner of DJR Team Penske with the Mustangs - he spent a lot of time without the big budget required to be in the winners circle in Supercars so it's nice to see him smiling again in the twilight of his racing career.
thank you for your input , as you say the rs500 was adopted by many in Auss , dominating until the 4wd Nissan took over , how the hell they allowed 4wd to join is beyond me , but that's history .
@@northyorkshirers500special2 According to the Group A rule book 4WD wasn't illegal, the clever folks at Nissan took a long hard look at the rule book and built a car that fitted within it, so when it hit the track it couldn't be banned because it was legal. My personal view is that Nissan were very clever. I thought at the time there was nothing to stop Ford developing a 4WD Sierra, the platform already existed in the Sapphire rally cars, and locally the Holdens could have done it too - a few years afterward they marketed a 4WD V8 Monaro road car so it was obviously in the pipeline (the Monaro is basically a 2 door Commodore). I've often wondered what it would have looked like had Australia continued with Group A and those cars had been developed. Ford Australia even developed a turbocharged 6 cylinder Falcon (the now famous "Barra" engine) so they could have gone to that platform once the Sierra reached the end of it's development. But as we all know Ford and Holden chose to bitch and whine instead of building a better mousetrap, so Group A got scrapped and now we have the V8 Supercars instead. Still great racing, but no technological development. These days it's basically a silhouette series with no brand relevance whatsoever. Cheers.
I have a lot of respect for dick and the challenges he has faced and the success he gained. His achievement in developing these cars was amazing, but the manner at which he conducted himself sometimes put me off. When the locally developed skylines put the shoes to him, his team were the loudest voices calling for restrictions on the nissans. They called for boost restrictions and extra weight in the skylines, meanwhile his car had more HP than any other rs500 in the world. Hypocrite. He also instigated the angry crowd before the famous pack of arseholes incident. He hasnt changed either. In the last 2 supercar series his team were penalised for illegally modifying their qualifying engine, deliberately holding back the field with their number 2 car to let their number 1 car get ahead, and they have crew members monitoring opponents pits looking for things they can submit complaints about to penalise the other teams. Pretty low. Spoils my opinion of such a determined racer.
@pete smyth yes i cannot believe they kept the win. After everything was checked, it was obvious. The driver was told to slow down because they didnt know where the accident was, then when interviewed the team boss said 'car is overheating' with a wry smile on his face. Clearly lying. The team were given a huge financial penalty but were allowed to keep the win? Disgusting lack of sportmanship.

Hey guys, I love your passion for these sierras and group a racing sierras. Me and my brother went to Bathurst every year from 1985 till 2005, probably stood right next to this car numerous times at race meetings here in oz, back in the day. I realised a lifelong dream in 2015 when I purchased the car that came 8th at Bathurst 1988, the Jagparts Vk commodore. Love the videos. Cheers Aussie fan.
I'm not a Ford fan at all... But anything Cosworth got their hands on was Awsome. Great to hear him say how different the RS 500 to the standard cosworth. I've heard so many owners over the yrs argue it was only cosmetic but the cars drove completely differently. Definitely one of my top 10 race cars. 👍🏻
Thanks Adam and Paul for another great video. So fascinating and relaxing to watch you both chatting away about these great cars. Keep the videos coming if you can.

Dick Johnson is an Aussie racing legend and still is (DJR team Penske). It's great to see the car again. It did dominate in its day along with the Nissan R32 GTR, they where fast cars beating V8 commodores and Falcons. They are part of the reason we went to V8 supercar racing instead of group A racing as it was back then.
I got to tour the Harrop facility not long ago and they were proudly showing off some of their trick bits (which date back to the mid-60s, mind you) and I can assure that the famous Harrop diff for the Sierra is not "almost a locked diff" - it is a full spool. The spools were turned on a very analogue lathe - that still stands in the back of the shop - and were designed using very early CAD to optimise strength and lightness. Most of today's spools from anywhere in the world are of a similar design, with the weight reducing castellations in the outer diameter and smoothly-tapering cones that eliminate stress risers in the diameter transitions. Beautiful bit of kit and truly revolutionary. It's also worth noting that Dick also got another Australian invention homologated for the RS500 - the rock-crushing Holinger dog box, which was once again a huge upgrade from the already beefed-up production Getrag unit used in many European cars. This effort was repeated by Fred Gibson when he had the AWD version of the same Holinger part accepted for Group A racing in Australia (and, I believe, the FIA), which ended up earning him instructions from Nissan Japan to keep his cars in Australia and not disturb the Japanese Group A scene.
@@paullinfoot6017 I sold it and my RS collection too cheap. Last I seen, someone had ripped the Merkur apart and turned it into a semi 3dr cossie look 😑
Dickie Johnson .... what a fellah! I remember him doing a couple of US Winston Cup road races in stock-cars. He didn't really get on with them especially the steering wheels. "Like driving a f*cking London bus!" he was heard to say over the ship to shore radio.
Cheers for curing my boredom Adam always love to see this guy on your videos... That air jack at the end was just the icing on the cake. Amazing video man.
Adam, I’ve just paused this at 5.24 after the beginning of this video.. the concerns over the virus.. loads of laughs there with Paul, interwoven clips of mechanical goodness whilst the audio is still you and Paul chatting.. the noise this DJ Sierra makes.. I went to bathurst in 1990 1991 and Dick Johnson's cars were always quick . He knew how to get the most out of these cars . As a holden fan i appreciated the Sierra, but nothing sounds better then a COMMODORE V8 . It was great to be at Bathurst because nothing comes close to that race and that track in my opinion. Really enjoyed the video and appreciated the content. CT
I'll never forget the sound of this car going up the main straight at Amaroo Park Raceway, with Dick Johnson at the wheel in Qualifying, the sound was off the charts amazing.
Great video Adam ...love how down to earth Paul is ...would be easy for a guru like him to be up his own aRSe but he is wonderfully grounded ...but what fantastic knowledge
I always wondered where Dicks car got too. Still remember it bouncing across the top side of the track at lakeside at full tilt. He cured the diff problems by cutting down a Ford 9" diff .
Great car with lots of history I remember the crash you referred to in the video at Thruxton. If I remember rightly it was lapping 2 class d cars and Rob Gravette and Phil Dowsette touched sending Rob backwards into the tires. Rob Gravette and Andy Rouse had some great battles that year.

Proud Australian/ Queenslander here. The battles between Dick and Peter Brock where legendary. Back when you had to be a brilliant driver and engineer. The in car footage of him with his face flexing out of shape and still doing one liners was awesome.
Love listening to people that really know their shit 👌and Paul does
Exactly - gob shut and listen 👍🏻
Thanks Adam and Paul for another great video. So fascinating and relaxing to watch you both chatting away about these great cars. Keep the videos coming if you can.
I remember watching The Great Race in the late 80's on TV and listening to the in car chats with Dick Johnson, Peter Brock etc.
Great memories. Amazing cars. Lucky man owning it.
Im very proud and honoured to be one of the lucky 6 to own a DJR Sierra Steve ,
@@northyorkshirers500special2 Do you know where all the others are Paul? One's in the Cosworth display museum, Bowden's in Australia have 2 of them (I think). Any idea of the whereabouts of the other 2?
Another fantastic insite from Paul great passion for the cossie think hes the type off guy that knows what to buy but will never sell for any amount. shows money won't make ya happy but a cossie will
your correct Tom , I often get asked " how much to buy it " my reply is always the same , there more than money to me
Seen this car in person today for the first time at the silverstone museum, a car before it’s time
Brilliant.
I bought a Merkur XR4Ti off Paul Linfoot in 2014. Was a gentleman to deal with.
Thank you for the kind comment ,,, I do wish i had not sold that car now tho ,,lol
@@paullinfoot6017 I sold it and my RS collection too cheap. Last I seen, someone had ripped the Merkur apart and turned it into a semi 3dr cossie look 😑
Good to see a bit of Aussie Motorsport history still kicking around. I loved watching the Sierras race back in the day.
Dickie Johnson .... what a fellah! I remember him doing a couple of US Winston Cup road races in stock-cars. He didn't really get on with them especially the steering wheels. "Like driving a f*cking London bus!" he was heard to say over the ship to shore radio.
Another cracking video Adam and a big thanks to Paul for sharing his passion for fords.
Keep up the brilliant video's Adam 👍👍👍👌
Could listen to Paul talk about Cossie’s all day long. Thanks for the video Adam, brilliant 👍🏻
thanks Rye
Likewise mate .....
Paul stood in all the smoke.. then the Beauty of the Sierra I paused.. this video is amazing just what we need to cheer us all up.. Thank you so very much for videos like this.. Awesome work.. 👍🏻
And respect to Paul too.. 😎 Thank you for sharing your Sierra’s with the enthusiasts 👍🏻
@@jeffheineken6709 thank you , some would say I look better surrounded by smoke , lol
Absolutely incredible. Zero interest in exotics. Its all about the affordable (when they were, not now adays) but the cossie sierra's, escort's, St220's... Focus RS. Love them. Great video, thanks for sharing
That brings back memories, got a pic of me standing next to Mike Smiths Mobil 1 RS 500 at bands when I was a nipper back in the 80s ,Great to hear so much knowledge of the RS 500 some of which I never knew ,happy times ,nice one Adam 👍😊
Awesome
Massive thanks for sharing
I was a big touring car fan back in the 80's
Totally forgot about the air-jacks
Watching your video uploads over again and this video crops up while I'm watching them , awesome stuff what a set up this guy has .
From Australia, much kudos to you for the respect shown, and the awesome history lesson of this great piece of (Aussie) racing. Of course my lucky number is 17, and DJR is still winning championships. Cheers.
Love the video, best thing getting up early to watch Bathurst, still love it and its a tradition I started with my son
Iam from Perth,Australia, I remember watching the car race in 87 88 , my favourite race car ever , very cool video
It was owned by Trevor Hine for a while in Nedlands and he used to race it at Waneroo.
Me too. We'd get to the circuit at 5am race day to get a good spot.
Thanks for the video Adam...👍
Ford absolutely nailed it big time with the road version of the Sierra RS500 Cosworth. Sadly we’ll never see the likes of this legend ever to appear as a production car again so thank you for taking the time to show this racing version and all its history 😎👍
Hi Guy's, what a fantastic watch, Paul you are an encyclopedia on legs mate, I could listen to your knowledge for hrs and hrs. And the car.. what a beauty, in pristine condition and obviously well looked after. Adam, please go back to Paul 's again very soon for another video/chat. Thank you both for making a very boring..coronavirus Sunday so interesting..!! Cheers, Alex.
Thanks Alex , im just so pleased that people enjoy the cars and a little bit of history about them
I went to bathurst in 1990 1991 and Dick Johnson's cars were always quick .
I'm super jealous. Paul is a blessed man
Thanks for showing this bit of Aussie motor racing history this car was beast to watch race
Fantastic times in touring cars , seems like yesterday 👍🇬🇧
Love these videos 👌👍 nice work and also a grate job and a bigthanks very much to you to Paul 👍
Paul is the Fred Dibnah of fast fords
never get bored watching these vids......
Love your videos Adam. Nice to see a pair of enthusiastic owners getting together. More please 😊😊
Beautiful. I remember looking inside this car trackside when it raced in
Adelaide.
What a bloody good video once again keep it 👍I’m from Paul’s kneck of the woods 👍👍
Great video Adam ...love how down to earth Paul is ...would be easy for a guru like him to be up his own aRSe but he is wonderfully grounded ...but what fantastic knowledge
Thank you for the kind comments , im very lucky to own these great cars . and love to share them with others .
I watched this going around when I was a kid, great to hear about all the engineering that went into it
If I had the $$$$ I'd bring this Aussie classic home. 🇦🇺🇦🇺
this is not an aussie car mate, Ford Sierra was built by Ford Europe/Germany from 1986 to 1992
@@tisbales True...... It just took an Aussie to build the fastest one in the world.
@@allandriver2066 please explain are you talking about bathurst?? the fastest street legal i know was in europe at 1000hp
THE RIDERS CLUB , this particular race car was Aussie built.
Anyway, this needs subtitles 😂
@@calais027 😂😂😂
Thanks for making this video
Absolutely love the RS500
I always wondered where Dicks car got too. Still remember it bouncing across the top side of the track at lakeside at full tilt. He cured the diff problems by cutting down a Ford 9" diff .
Great Video m8 love the car. my uncle used to race with rob gravet nice to to hear his name again brings back great days for me
I could watch and listen for hours...
Thats not what my Mrs says ,, lol ,, Thanks Ben.
Same here Haha...
Could watch and listen for hours...
Love the car and his knowledge. Best video on TH-cam! 👌🏾
Another great video would love to go see thease cars in person spend all day talking about fords there all a work of art keep up the good work more videos please 😎👍🏻
Awe wow look at that garage and those cars like a dream come true for most of us , love these kinds of vids there just genuine and not rehearsed like a lot on here
👏🏻👏🏻thankyou thanks and thanks a lot, I’m off to watch the full 89 BTC season
Great video Adam.
Those were Ford glory days for us following the tin tops and the DJR cars are legendary.
I feel somewhat privileged to have witnessed that car and all of Dick's cars on the track over his career.
Fond memories of being at the Pit Garage door watching when they lifted out the Cossie from the 1989 Bathurst winning DJR RS500.
FOOOOOOORD SIERRRRRRRRRRA, FOOOOOOOOORD SIERRRRRRRRRA.
Adam loving the content pure enjoyment listening to this could listen to his story's all day long
Talking of in car footage, Australia invented "race cam" and pioneered the technology
Some fantastic in car footage from those days John , and a lot from inside DJ sierras .
Tricky Dicky was the first and best in-car driver/commentator, would give some blistering assessments of other drivers during Bathurst telecasts lol.
@@onedayiwillmakesomecontent Dick wasn't the first with the in car footage and commentary,
The was the number 7 banana oe corolla and apparently the driver never shut up all the time he was in the car racing around Bathurst so the late great Mike Raymond said in a few interviews..
But Dick was the best at in car commentary though, very rarely losing his cool
@@paulcooper3934 aah, thanks for the heads up. I knew the first ever in car wasn't dick, Didnt know he wasnt the first talker!
@@paulcooper3934 Peter Wiiliamson was the Celica driver.
Another belter video with the main man Paul” sick car great story 👍🏽
The engineering on the last of them was sublime. 9in Diff 6sp Hollinger water cooled brakes.
Always mint to see Paul and his motors. Great video Adam.
Proud Australian/ Queenslander here. The battles between Dick and Peter Brock where legendary. Back when you had to be a brilliant driver and engineer. The in car footage of him with his face flexing out of shape and still doing one liners was awesome.
I was at a test day at Dicks local track , Lakeside Raceway, when Dick was testing and trying to break his new Bathurst car, plain red no stickers on. I was half way down the main straight as he come onto it, by the karrussell he was down the inside , sideways out and gone.
Adam that is absolutely mint pal respect to Paul as well
fantastic video yet again mate, could listen to this everyday no bother.
oh and that opening little statement about England is exactly how iv felt for years just wish more people would realise it.
