I felt like no one knows much about guns and the fact that they think an AR-15 is an automatic weapon speaks volumes to the ignorance of weapons in America.

The Americans aren't the ones who called it an Assault Rifle. Everyone in America who owns one knows it's not an Assault Rifle. People outside of US, or those in America who don't one one or even own a gun at all) , who watch the news thinks it is.

As a combat vet, former SWAT officer, former executive protection and a gunsmith, these kids need an education on firearms. I carry one on my person everywhere I go. Governments manipulate statistics to lean towards a goal. The UK is a good example. Crime statistics are manipulated. Violent crimes with a weapon are actually more present there than here per person vs population. Most of gun "violence" is suicide in the US.

    • @MrMajikman1
      @MrMajikman1 ปีที่แล้ว

That is correct! 50% of the 60,000 gun deaths per year in The US, are suicides where no one is harmed but the person with the gun. I believe the statistics show that another 5% are accidental gun deaths, and another 5% are caused by Law Enforcement in the line of duty. So that leaves approx. 24,000 deaths by gun crime (murder) or 0.00007% of the total US population. Out of these 24,000 murders per year (certainly a tragedy) 80% are caused by inner city gangs in major Democrat run cities with very strict gun laws. The statistics are publicly available, and yet, people choose to not do any research on the subject, and just let the "News" tell them what to think.

One of the greatest days of my life (I'm 60) was the last day that I hunted with my dad. We each did an independent sweep of this large stretch of woods after having some morning coffee at his truck. We converged at a pre-arranged meeting point near a swamp and decided to go around the swamp, instead of through it as we headed back to the truck.
After about 30 minutes we were on a trail and a beautiful 8-point buck came out of the brush and stood right in front of us. It was almost close enough to touch. I raised my shotgun to my shoulder. Dad did the same about a second later. I sighted-in on the deer and then lowered the shotgun. Dad did the same.
The deer looked at us for another couple of seconds and then walked away.
Dad asked why I didn't shoot and I replied that we had enough meat in the freezer and didn't need it.
My dad and I still talked about it whenever we'd get together for the next 30 years until he passed away.
I still go out and shoot targets. But, if I don't need the meat, then I don't even aim at an animal.

An AR-15 is not an assault rifle.
AR stands for Armalite Rifle, named after the company who originally made them.
Further, an AR-15 can fire as fast as any pistol, it's one bullet per trigger pull. Which is semi-automatic. Pull the trigger once, it fires the bullet, than gets another bullet ready to fire, ready for another trigger pull.
Assault rifles have an extremely strict definition. One of the most important defining characteristics is a select switch that allows it to switch between semi-automatic (one bullet per trigger pull) to fully automatic (bullets firing for as long as the trigger is held) or burst (~3 bullets per one trigger pull).
The AR can not do any of that.
Additionally, most AR-15's are chamber in 5.56(.223) which is among the smallest of common round sizes.
The reason why people like them is compared to other rifles (which have much larger rounds, grain and projectile size) they are much easier to shoot (less recoil), but they are also extremely customizable. And because there are so many who have them, it's easy to get parts. In a way they are kinda like the Honda's of the gun world.

I enjoyed this discussion since especially since I do not fit the normal image of a gun owner, being an Asian female. I used to be a competitive shooter and I am an NRA certified shooting instructor. I taught the required firearm safety class in Hawaii, where it is required in order to buy a pistol. Gun control is such a challenging topic because there are so many laws for gun control but there are still so many tragic shootings and crimes committed with firearms. And most of those firearms used were illegally acquired. As an up standing citizen and as a shooter I do not feel more gun laws will make us any safer but I would and do comply with all the laws as a gun owner and will continue to. But do I think more laws will stop gun violence. My answer is no because laws that are not enforced effectively does not have any impact whatsoever especially since most guns used in crimes and/or shootings were not acquired legally. I do believe some kind of mental screening for gun buyers, like the required background check (for purchase of a pistol) is a good idea but implementing that sort of screening takes time and do you just screen a person once? There are so many issues and challenges when it come to firearms but I personally feel it is something that goes beyond more laws, I feel society and how we value life (other people’s lives) is a big part of the issue and to fix that is even a greater challenge.

Before the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, the term “assault weapon” didn’t exist. The legal definition of a an assault rifle is a intermediate cartridge fired from a fully auto rifle. Then the AWB was introduced, they came up with the term assault weapon, which basically covered all semi auto rifles that used a detachable magazine in existence.
The ban grandfathered in the weapons already in existence, so millions stayed in circulation. The gun manufacturers removed a couple of cosmetic features and continued to sell them with the exact same capabilities and rate of fire as the grandfathered guns.
When the ban ended, some states kept it going on a state basis, New York and Connecticut being two of them. I bring this up because Adam Lanza used an AR that complied with the federal ban, as well as the state ban that continues to this day.
Remember this the next time Joe Biden says he passes that assault weapons ban. It did nothing. I bought my first AR in 1999, right in the middle of the ban. Had milk crates full of legal 30 round magazines.

I'm not a "gun guy" myself. I carried a handgun for about ten years when I was a probation officer in the 80's and early 90's. It remained locked in a box after that for quite a while. (Note: after 30 years in a locked box in the closet - the ammo was still good) I have never been a hunter or into shooting sports. When being trained for my concealed carry permit in 1985, I did fire two shots from a shotgun (to see what it was like) and about 20 in a burst, from a full auto police short barrel rifle. I have not fired a shotgun again, and no other rifles until I built my first AR-15 a few years ago from an 80% lower. (you tube explains all that)
Around six years ago, I started paying attention to politics and gun laws and the Constitution and the 2A.... and how hard the left is working to destroy it. So I am building AR-15s for myself and my kids and grandkids (and my kids don't even have boyfriends or girlfriend yet)
People do not seriously think of the phrase "a well regulated militia" and its importance. It means a well-functioning, well-equiped, well-skilled group of soldiers. Here is the question I ask people, and I ask YOU this question now: "If YOU and I are suddenly called upon, to band together and form up a "well regulated militia" - do you know what weapons and ammo and equipment (that you are well-skilled with) that you will bring from home, which you will take into battle?"
A "gun person" (hunter, sport shooter, concealed carrier) may not have a good answer to that question. A "2A person" will.

Many of those countries that do not allow their citizens to have guns have a major common denominator - they are protected by the U.S. Without such protection they would have been taken over by a totalitarian regime decades ago because they did not have the means of defending themselves - guns. The primary purpose of citizen gun ownership is not hunting, but self-defense, but more particularly self-defense against totalitarianism, of which has always been preceded by taking away the right of citizens to own guns.

When you look at the school shooter types they have most of the same issues going on like i mentioned. Another is culture. But that's not in the school shooting bracket, that's a city thing. Which we don't see here where I live unless a city person comes here and starts trouble with a gun.

This is my response to how guns are seen in my country
We have guns here in Australia and ownership is highly regulated but still obtainable if you abide by the requirements for owning one. Most owners are farmers or people living in rural areas and they are seen and used like a plumber uses a wrench. They are a tool used to do a job so you should use the right tool for the job including sport shooting. That's why appropriate firearms are sold here. After our first and only mass shooting the population voted and agreed to ban and remove all fire arms that are no@t appropriate for the roles civilians need them for. The gun by back scheme was so successful in removing inappropriate firearms we have some of the lowest levels of gun violence in the world. You can still hunt here, you can still go to a range and shoot guns. Australia has several gold medalists in the Olympics for clay shooting. Gun ownership is totally ok as long as the populace respect them for what there intended purpose is while ensuring that regulations are in place for those that would see to do otherwise.
(And no our guns don't shoot out spider, snakes, crocodiles sharks or anything like that either just regular bullets 😅)

There is a fundamental difference in mindset between Americans and Australians.
We believe that we were endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights. We do not believe that other men, or our government, gives us those rights. Because of this, we in turn ha ve certain inherent responsibilities. We are responsible for our own defense. We task the federal and local governments with certain tasks relating to general public safety, but each individual is ultimately responsible for defending themselves from: governments (foreign and domestic), individuals intending to do them harm, and animal predators.
Because of this right and responsibility, we have a second amendment in our constitution recognizing our inherent right to keep and bear arms. The "appropriate" use of a firearm is self defense in this regard.
Any US citizen who does not recognize this right and responsibility has offloaded their personal responsibility to their government, and has subsequently given away their right to self defense.
This is why an anti-gun argument will never be convincing to a truly free person. We are absolutely willing to accept that someone else may give up their freedom and responsibility to others, but we refuse to do the same.
It is antithetical to true individual liberty, that a group of others can vote to remove another's rights.

@7:19 the student asked about these shootings that happen he says on a daily basis and what can be done about it. Nobody ever points out that it always happens in a gun free zone where a criminal or a mentally unstable gunman feels safe because no law abiding or mentally stable person will be able to protect themselves. Or that millions, yes actually millions of incidents reported and documented across the US that go unpublicized about armed civilians stopping violent crimes. If it bleeds it leads. Stopping a criminal with a weapon by a law abiding American with a weapon goes unnoticed whereas a criminal killing innocents with a weapon makes the front page in the newspaper or is the headline for your local news report on tv. These are the things that need to be brought into the light in these conversations.

    S. Korean think having a gun itself is very dangerous damaging very disturbing thing to have it ordinary civilians. Society should feel safe so having gun itself as an ordinary people to own a gun itself is asking for a trouble and danger. Gun should be used by millitary and special police officer for deadly criminal. Law and police are there to protect in civilized world. Not taking law on own hand. Maybe a gun owners gives feeling of power...

    • @shaunkranish
      @shaunkranish ปีที่แล้ว +3

Guns are designed to be dangerous. That is what makes them useful. They provide the ability to defend as well as attack, and it is estimated firearms are used millions of times a year in the US in defense. Most of these times the firearm is not actually discharged or shot - just brandishing it is enough to stop/prevent the attack so that no one is injured.
America is unique in a number of ways. We have not had a war here since the Civil War when countless soldiers gave their lives to end the abhorrent practice of slavery, often fighting family/friends on the other side. In the world wars, American soldiers benefitted from having extra experience and skill with rifle shooting, compared to soldiers of other countries where using guns was not as much in the culture.
Civilian ownership of guns provides a few benefits: 1) helps prevent common street crime 2) helps prevent looting/civil unrest during emergencies 3) helps dissuade other countries from invading 4) helps soldiers be prepared for war and 5) helps dissuade the government from infringing too far on human/civil rights.
Ukraine just learned how important readiness is. Perhaps if gun ownership and use would have been a popular, ordinary part of their culture, they 1) would not be such a corrupt country and 2) would not have been invaded by Russia. In WW2 the Nazis decided to leave Switzerland be. While there were a number of reasons for this, one important reason was that every man (and many women) were well-trained and practice riflemen and militiamen. Everyone had guns and ammo and was ready. There is a famous letter exchange where a Nazi commander taunts a Swiss commander telling the Swiss commander he has twice as many troops as him and asking him what would he do if they invaded. The Swiss commander answered "shoot twice."
Much of the world has suffered from civil wars, "ethnic cleansing" and other genocide. It is estimated over 200 million civilians (this does NOT include soldiers) were systematically killed by their own governments or factions/nearby governments between the year 1900 and 2000. Guess what - these civilians did not own and use weapons regularly. Could any group in the US eliminate another group? It would be an impossible task thanks to the
widespread ownership of guns and ammo in the country. People would defend whichever group was being hunted. Humans in the US aren't as easily hunted and slaughtered as they have been in places like China (at their own hands and at the hands of Japan), Russia, Germany, Rwanda, Cambodia, Cuba, Venezuela, Chile, Argentina, Bosnia, Turkey.
Certainly preventing genocide is a worthwhile endeavor. While we may have to deal with extra crime and terrorist acts/mental illness acts, there are many benefits to gun ownership as well. Even without guns, as the instructor points out, people kill with hammers, bats, knives in a terroristic/mass fashion in other countries. Police cannot be everywhere, and with how badly police reform is needed in the US...would we even want them everywhere? How does one protect oneself when the government goes bad? Guns. It is a human right to be able to protect your own life. One has a right to life, and this includes the right to protect it with effective means. Having so many guns does require us to live up to this responsibility to protect ourselves more than usual, but that is an acceptable tradeoff for preventing genocide, being prepared and preventing war, and ensuring that the People always have the power and not some tyrannical political dictator or oligarchy.

We shouldn’t have a prerequisite to utilize a right in the Bill of Rights. No one wants the same logic applied to the 1st, 4th, 5th and so on. Mental health should be addressed in a way it doesn’t infringe on the rights of others.
