I had an emergency room doctor at Rush Prest St Luke's in Chicago tell me that wadcutters were the absolute worst to treat and roundnose the easiest. The roundnose would part tissue making it a snap to suture, but the wadcutter would carry tissue away through nearly the entire wound channel. With wadcutter injuries, the patient was FAR more likely to bleed out.

Plainclothesmen in the 1950's carried wadcutter loads. When the CIA chose the J-frame as their primary piece, they used wadcutters, for just the same simple reason ...they go through.
I actually use wad cutters in my slow calibers 38spl and 45LC. Now, my speed loader has HP semi-jacked / flat point as the are easier to load
Jim Cirillo of the NYPD proved the effectiveness of the .38 wadcutter in multiple engagements
IIRC, he eventually went to a Dan Wesson .44 Magnum with wadcutters. He was not messing about.

It’s been years since I read Cirillo’s book (or watched his videos) but I recall he was the multi talented gun enthusiast who played with a lot of handgun configurations, to include Dan Wesson barrels fitted to S&W frames. Around that time, it was also popular to fit Python barrels to S&W Model 19s. Cirillo also played with cartridges, but I seem to recall his first and maybe most famous bodega fight was with a Model 10 loaded with NYPD approved 158 grain round nose lead.
@@sombra6153 the NYPD approved 158 grain RNL, nicknamed "The Widowmaker", was used by many agencies. The NY politicians liked them because they were not as destructive as the hollow point "dum-dum" bullets. Eventually the NYPD got the JHP ammo by agency lawyers pointing out the over penetration liability.
I like the longer range shooting because it has revealed shortcomings of some bullet designs, in particular the monolithic copper alloy bullets. They generally seem to destabilize at distance when fired at handgun velocity and result in extreme inaccuracy. I really appreciate the information you share here and we are all better for it.

I noticed in another thing I filmed, that a harder lead did better than a softer lead of the same SWC design - at longer range - because the softer lead brand were all deformed in random ways.

Appreciate all your work putting these videos together. I have a massive soft spot for old cartidges , i often carry a .44 bulldog loaded with 246 gr lrn. Theres better options but itbworked for grandpa, itl work for me. Im 28 and always get called a fudd cause of that 44 hahah. God Bless you Brother.
Semi-wadcuttter loads used to be the expert load for law enforcement when they figured out the round nose bullets didn't travel straight terminally... the semi-wadcutters do - just like the full wadcutters. Thanks for another interesting vid!
These loads are like what the ammo manufacturers used to call "full charge wadcutters," meaning, wadcutter bullets loaded to full spec chamber pressure. Which is what one would expect from Buffalo Bore, of course. As opposed to "target wadcutters" loaded down to just over 700 fps to avoid the effects of transonic drag, and therefore lower pressure. For the higher pressure and velocity, hard cast wadcutters are desirable for less leading than the swaged WCs (either hollow base or solid) used in the target loads.
I've loaded a fair number of full charge hardcast WCs in both .32 and .38 myself. Mainly because they were more readily available than swaged bullets, and usually cheaper.
Since the target WCs are soft enough to deform (mushroom) slightly on hitting the target (I'm talking loaded properly, solid end forward), and penetrate less because of their lesser energy, one might actually say they would be more desirable in some scenarios.
I've carried FCWCs in a 2" .38 in the outdoors but never suffered from the delusion they would stop a bear!
I think the .32 WC may be loaded to somewhat higher power levels by European manufacturers to give 100% reliable function in the highly specialized target autoloaders used in international centerfire competition. I think most American companies load the .32 down out of concern for the older legacy revolvers more commonly found here, especially the old top-breaks.

@@HollyrockFarm I used to get them in local gun stores, or at gun shows. There are a couple of companies selling hard cast lead bullets online but due to the weight, shipping can be pricey.
I still have a closet full of cast bullets!

Yeah man, that's what I'm talking talking about! I run Buffalo Bore 44 special 200 grain wadcutters in my Charter Arms Bulldog. They shoot right to the point of aim at 30 feet, recoil is mild and they pack a punch. BTW, the CA Bulldog is a very underrated gun. Mine is tight and the trigger is light. Love it. Those rounds will never fail to penetrate deep enough and no worries about expansion. They're already as big as a typical 9mm when it actually expands out of a short barrel.
I ran a couple boxes of those in my BD, but damn that report is stout.

I've been wanting a charter arms bulldog for so long I like the snub nose 2 inch version but but the charter arms bulldog clasic just a longer barrel version with wood grips really catches my eye

I've had two Charter .44's. Bought new about 3 years ago. Junk. Light strikes from both, one locked up and had to go back, neither shot to POI regarding windage or elevation, and they are not to be trusted. Taurus is better and they are in the junk category, too.
I'm glad yours work for you, but they can break / lock without warning and if not will wear out quickly.

Choose it? You mean if I had to pick one between the two? I may have said I picked it here, but always do? There's no way that's true. I am not biased and if I say what I say, while on the range, and while having Rheumatoid Arthritis, then maybe there's something to it. But I am not biased and just picking that caliber as a whole.
Great video, Sam! Always happy to see .32 S&W represented. My occasional back pocket carry is an old h&r snubbie loaded with my own cast and hand loaded "soup cans".😅
So the real Question is...Was Bad Boy Leroy Brown rocking an H&R snub in .32 Long or a Colt 1903 ACP???
That's like asking if his shoe contained a folding straight edge or a plastic Bic. My money is on the H&R revolver. That being said, it's pretty 'cool' to have an auto way back then...the question has not been answered.

I'd like to see a pure lead projectile with a coating to prevent leading in the barrel. I think there would be plenty of expansion. Keep it heavy/long to make it tumble.
Ditto. I think Underwood may have some, but maybe not in these calibers.
@@mdubb4855 Underwood has the .38 Special version with the coating, but in .32 revolvers they only load the .327 Federal Xtreme Defender if I recall.

357sig gold dots are essentially hollow point wadcutters at 1350+ fps...EXPLOSIVE 💣 🌩 and bonded!
.357 Sig Underwood 115 gr Nosler ASP in my 5" barrel are like 1,600 FPS, and act like a segmenting round despite it not being designed that way. Just incidental explosion.

Way back, my agency tested 38 Special SWC and WC factory ammo for concealed carry snubbies but rejected them due to over penetration liability. The detectives liked them because they were easy to shoot, the lawyers hated them. Both of the loads you tested are fine for civilian concealed carry in my opinion.
Sadly....if a bullet has enough penetration to reach the vitals on an angling shot...it's going to WAY over penetrate on a frontal that goes between the ribs. You really can't have it both ways and I've always believed that you should equip yourself for the toughest shot and then live with what happens on a less challenging one.
And...the 'liability of over-penetration' is WAY blown out of proportion because Cops miss almost 90% of their shots....so odds are as a civilian bystander you are MUCH more likely to be hit by one of the clean misses than unfortunately catch one that went through the bad guy.
@@recoilrob324 try to tell the lawyers that who have the confidence of the sheriff, who himself is a lawyer., As for the cops' missed shots, the agency guidelines state that you can only fire at a suspect if there is a clear line of fire without endangering other people, in case you miss.
@@PassivePortfolios I know that 'agency guidelines' might say one thing....but have you seen the multitude of body cams showing panic multiple mag dumps in cop shootings?
I pray that you and your cohorts are good shots and adhere to the guidelines...that would be GREAT!!! But sadly...the 'over-penetration' myth is used all too often trying to cover wildly inaccurate shooting by blaming the projectiles.
I'm sure there ARE cases where a bystander is hit by an over-penetration....but these are few and far between and despite what the lawyers might argue...are MUCH more likely to have been clean misses but liability won't allow them to admit the truth.
@@recoilrob324 although the hit rate is around 20%, due to agency regulations, cops don't shoot if there are bystanders around because that violates training and guidelines. When in doubt, don't, shoot. As for over penetration, I am not aware of any such cases in which bystanders were hit. It's lawyer made up stuff. The real liability is missed shots on bystanders so the agencies concentrate on that training.
@@PassivePortfolios Oh ...I agree that 'overpenetration' is lawyer made up stuff....but there are dozens of TH-cam body cams showing cops from around the country blasting away in violation of agency regulations. It's really a miracle that more innocents aren't being hit.
A true 'over-penetration' case is rare even when ball ammo was in use. One of the shots through John Dillinger winged a bystander and while I suspect there have been others...that's the only one that I'm sure was proven while several others I can think of that were blamed on 'over-penetration' were clean misses but liability and guilt made them blame the bullets.

I use 158 grain wadcutters that I cast in my own molds. I have never had a jhp expand reliably. At 650 to 700 fps out of my j-frame I don’t think I will have a problem with stopping power.

45 Colt from a 6.5" , Med Soft wad cutter , bare jugs slightly deformed the W C . The jugs #1 & 2 blew up very well , much like the #1 jug from a H P . The W C seemed to bring damage back farther into the jugs .

I was watching the learning channel on cable 20 years or so ago. The show was about trick shooters. The best one was the guy who hit a six inch diameter balloon with snub nose 38 at 200 yards. Never underestimate a firearm or a shooter. With enough skill, luck is not a factor.
Well . I saw that too. Bob Mundon was good, but that to some degree is a trick. As long as you hit the steel behind the balloon, spalling will pop it. While hitting a steel silhouette at 200 yards is impressive, it's a lot easier than hitting a small balloon.

One thing that few people point out is that 38 Special wadcutters, tend to be quieter than most rounds because of their slow velocity. This is especially valuable when letting off a round inside of a confined space, such as in a room or an automobile.
This effect is lessened for the higher power Buffalo Bore rounds, tested in this session.
Lost River Ammo Company makes a +P rated wadcutter for 38 special. I havr been shooting the Choice Ammunition brand wadcutters and so far like them very much.
I believe an earlier episode mentioned the quietness of .44 Special, too. But of course, .38 SPL has more options for availability and concealability of revolvers.
They are quieter, but my brother is an audiologist and knows a lot about this stuff and we have talked. The truth is, is that whether it's a .22 LR or a .357 Magnum, the damage to the ears isn't going to be different as long as your ear drums don't get blown, that is, with the number of rounds fired in a self defense situation. Now if you fire a 50 round box of .357 Magnum with no ear protection on, every week VS .22 LR, you're going to need hearing aids probably at 50 years old instead of 70.
@GunSam That's actually reassuring. As a youngster and teen, I never wore hearing protection and likely suffered some loss. I do now, but there have been a couple of times I've forgotten it before shooting (but realized right away).
Everyone can have cumulative hearing damage, but some can lose it at once with a loud sound/over pressure. You don't know if that's you until it happens.
Sound can be different from a cartridge depending on pressure, barrel length, bullet weight, bullet length, powder type, objects & walls around you, and more.
If you want loud, full power .357 magnum and .327 magnum are freaking loud!

It's an old Desantis thumb break scabbard I believe it's called. When I got it, it was specifically listed as a Ruger SP101 holster, but it has worked with basically every type of 2" range snub nose revolver I have tried to put in it. S&W J-frame, Ruger LCR/SP101, Taurus small frame, S&W bodyguard 38. Even fits that Heritage Barkeep 2.68" well, because the frame is smaller than a typical centerfire revolver.

I have some Choice Ammunition brand coated hardcast wadcutters in my 38 right now. Great load for snub nose.
I 've been commenting on RNFP and WC ammo for several years since the fluted bullets came out. It seems to me that a flat nose should act similar to the fluted bullets - they generate fluid displacement and shear force that cuts tissue. They're also a lot less expensive. This is the first YT video I've seen that confirms my impression. I'd love to see what an RNFP in .380 does for pocket carry.

Well instead of Tissue flowing around as in FMJ ot lead round nose from temporary cavity..much less bone deflection riding ribs or skirting skulls and Perps rise like zombies...well the Wadcutters also vector force at 90 degrees cutting the tissue. I still would prefer a partially expanded JHP as would act like a larger diameter wadcutter such as 85 gr JHP .32 Magnum even through denim. Still millions of .32 Longs out there & w wadcutters means don't F w granny & low recoil

As usual Gun Sam is right. For a semi auto I would chose a RNFP over ANY round nose solid. There is a reason Elmer Kieth settled on that design for the best 44 mag hunting bullets. (after many decades of development.)
Full power wadcutters are no joke. I think we are rediscovering things our grandfathers knew. I think so e of the ammo companies are making soft cast full power wadcutters too, which should allwviate the overpenetration concerns. In 44 Spl or 45 Colt, i think the hard cast is highly thought of for dangerous animal defense. I prefer the +p LSWCHP in 38, and the BB 190 gr in 44 Spl, but wadcutters have their place in a variety of situations. I plan to cast some of my own bullets once i start handloading. No doubt there will be a wadcutter or 2 in the mix
I like Buffalo bores 32 long but the only 32 long chambering handgun I have is a top brake revolver, and Buffalo bore specifically states not to use them in that type of firearm
They work in any .32 H&R Mag and .327 Federal magnum revolver. Even Taurus has a cheap .327 Federal revolver.

@@garrettschienschang7898 you could probably get away with it being they state they are under 15,000 PSI pressure, but there's probably a reason why they state not to use in top break, but I wouldn't know why they state it. My point is that there's a couple cheap guns out there that can fire it fine, Taurus 327 being one of them.

@@garrettschienschang7898 When federal designed the .327 Federal, they did it by having Ruger make a 3" SP101 .357 Magnum, into a smaller chamber and barrel bore of .312". The cartridge was designed around that SP101. So for me, if I was going to venture off into either a 3" or 4" .327 Federal, i'd probably try to do it right and save for the high cost of the SP101. I don't know what they run now days for a 4" but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something like $850.

Going back forty years ago there was a dispute in a local bar in which one individual fired a .38 RNL from a Det Spl at his opponent's forehead. The man who was shot was stunned for a moment and then went after the shooter with apparent intent to dos him serious bodily harm. The shooter fled to our police station where he turned himself and could not get into the safety of a jail cell.

Both wadciutter and flatnose projectiles also open better wound channels, less likely to close like a round nose projectile. The object is increased blood loss, which you especially get with the wadcutter.

Gonna pick up a couple of boxes for my 327
I like the idea of waddcutters in a 38 spl, but the over pen is asking for trouble {lawsuit or wounding an innocent}. I'm sticking with my 158 grain soft lead cast SWCHP {Chicago load}. I get 12-16" pen from that, and I feel it will do the job. Expands really good too, even at standard pressure from my older S&W model 36.
Interesting results. I have always thought that wadcutters were just for target practice. It seems like they might be good for self defense too.
After reliability, accuracy & penetration are the next most important considerations in ammo selection, with expansion being last. Wadcutters provide both accuracy & penetration. While it can be said that bigger holes are better, making a hole in the right place is what really matters. I'm guessing also, that a hardcast, hot wc such as that BB would do well through barriers such as auto glass & car doors - maybe?
Georgia Arms makes a wadcutter designed specifically for defense, which is slightly faster than a normal target wc, but a good bit slower than the BB. That could get the penetration just right.
I can imagine the reason swcs do so well in real life situations is similar to why a very sharp, smooth knife edge will make a combatant bleed more than a serrated edge. A clean slice doesn’t make the body respond by tensing and closing up as it takes longer for it to recognize it has been breached as opposed to the tearing done by a serrated edge.
I like the longer range stuff, too. Know what you can do with your gear.
What’s your fav rounds for a Kimber 3’ barrel> > enjoy your comparisons but still wonder if .38s might put more rounds on target faster than 357s//with the latter, only 1 round may be needed. Any opinions, guys? Semper Fi🇺🇸

The .32 S&W delivers quite well in effect on target vs very light recoil.
Lead is my favorite kind of bullet.
Between those 2 revolvers, I might pick the 6 shooter over the 5.
The 38 does have 30% more surface area, which would wound more per hit. Hitting is always the thing that counts...those smoky loads are an unnecessary hindrance.

I am a fan of the lowly Wad Cutter.
The 38 WC is a hot loading from the typical velocity. It seems a ~700-750 FPS 148 has enough energy in a Gel Block to ensure an exit hole.
Since these don’t deform the energy gets transferred not absorbed by the bullet.
I wonder what the BHN is for these Buffalo Bore Cast Lead Boolits.
I leaned about wadcutters the old fashioned way. Had pellet guns as a kid, had a lot of wadcutter pellets. I shot a lot of things.

I did until about a year ago, and after accumulating about 10,000 .38 Special brass, 5,000 .357 Mag brass, there's really nowhere to store more and more and more when I don't need them. I only reload a few hundred rounds a year, but I used to reload like 700 a month.

Is this ammo recently purchased? Because I could be wrong but I thought I remembered these . 32 s&w long wadcutters getting a little more on the chronograph tests in previous videos. They might have had to tone them down a little bit. I'm glad I still have several boxes of the old pre ban ones if that's the case.
In 2020 I got 820 FPS average from the same revolver. That 17 FPS on average more. I'll still call that about the same
wo honest loads but I don't see the point of making a .38 WC that is hot, the pressure in a standard WC is high already with the fast-burning powder that goes in a target round (but you saw a lot of smoke, maybe this load doesn't have fast burning powder, after all). I like the Fiocchi WC but I used to love the Blazer WC and LRN, quiet and clean rounds!

I would, but that being said there's always something 'better'. So when I say I prefer other stuff, doesn't mean I wouldn't carry these if I needed to.
Yep, aside from the over penetration, wadcutters are great.
this is where a standard 'target' WC may be better @ 700 fps or so. 16" penetration at lucky gunner testing.
Unless you want to use a hot, heavy .38+P or +p+ like the old Hydrashok 147 gr, you're better off just using LRN in a lightweight snub nose.
It's easier to shoot well, tends to tumble, and tends to not waste effort by over penetrating like these BB wadcutter do.
As for the .32 S&W Long, these BB did all you could home they'd do. My wife carries an LCR .327 loaded with .32 mag SWC 100 gr i load to about 950 fps. They'll perform similarly to this BB load.
Still, .32 Long and .32 magnum from a snub give at best .380-like performance. But the .32 revolvers are more reliable and fun to practice with unlike most of the pocket .380's.

In theory tumbling is good, but there's a reason that the 158 gr LRN was often called by cops, the widowmaker. Six shots center mass, attacker not effected much, then kills the cop before laying down and dying.

Yes but it was a long time ago, in 2021 and I was doing a weird hybrid test with bologna packs in front of the gel blocks.
I'd like to know how the two .32 longs that Buffalo Bore sells compare with each other, and also how they compare with a non-Buffalo Bore .32 magnum (BB's .32 magnum is too hot for lightweight guns like Charter Arms or the old S&W .32 mag Airweight and Airlite).

I doubt another brand would penetrate that far. My understanding is that Buffalo Bore loads their rounds really hot. Curious to know your experience.
Looking at the velocity and the bullet weight i can see that these loadings are not hot, they are fairly midrange.
Buffalo Bore do go deeper. Typical 148/100 gr .38/.32 wadcutters are usually about 700 FPS and penetrate to normal depths like 15" to 20". Part of that is lower power, but also part of that is a normal soft lead wadcutter can deform from .358" to .400" very easily, which lowers penetration by increasing frontal area, just like a hollow point expanding.

I would not feel under gunned with wad cutters. I would feel more confident with a conventional projectile for a reload as the WC’s can be tricky to get in the pipe, compared to.
I know next to nothing at all about any of the .32 caliber loads outside of .327 Federal Mag loadings (those have serious thump!).. How does the recoil from your .32 S&W Long load out of the little Ruger compare with say a bog standard .38spl load out of a bog standard snubby? Asking for a friend 😂
ALL 32's are ludicrously expensive in my area so I kinda wanted some feedback on .32 Long (really any of the .32's) before spending any money on target practice only to find it's total waste of money and .327 is what I'm stuck with for life in my own Ruger!
Gun Sam that 32 seems very good. Hitting what needs hit will save you. I learned that in uncle sams army. How hard is 32 ammo to get. Very interesting. 😊
I consider an ammo hard to get, if I walk into a gun store or sporting goods store and there is none of that variety. Examples I have had of that happening to me, generally includes when I look for let's say .45 Super, .327 Federal Magnum etc. I have never walked into a gun/sports store that did not have at least one form of .32 S&W Long ammo in it. Usually it's Remington Performance Wheelgun LRN or Fiocchi Wadcutters that I see.

Have you tried the Underwood Ammo 38spl 150gr hardcast wadcutter? 333FPE, and 1000 FPS at the muzzle, and it is listed as standard pressure.
Yes, and it's identical to the Buffalo Bore version I just tested in my last video, except for a powder coat. Velocity difference on average was 1 FPS difference. If you want to see how the Underwood performs, watch my last video. I may have tested the Actual Underwood in the past but I don't remember.

Have you considered testing the Atlanta Arms 148 grain Wadcutter that is reportedly loaded with self defense in mind?
I haven't heard of them, but I can take a look at them.
there is another option. Georgia Arms Ultimate Defense Wadcutter. Roy Huntington of American Handgunner and Guns magazine tested them and got 733 FPS.
That's pretty typical velocity for any ordinary Wadcutter.
@@GunSam from a 4 incher yes. but a 2 incher is usually about 650-660 FPS.
They make that style for larger calibers too.

Lol why does .38 special seem to range from like 175 all the way up to over 500 ft lbs of energy if its the hot buffalo bore or underwood stuff from a 6”?

This penetration wouild allow you to viably shoot through a mild barrier that your target was hiding behind while shooting around. (Make sure of your target.)
Potentially, but energy comes into play also. The .38 Special here, probably could defeat barriers well, but the .32 Long, despite being hard and penetrating well in gel, would be significantly more effected by a hard barrier and potentially not penetrate the barrier at all, or not penetrate an attacker much after going through the barrier
