I have seen mobs of americans getting violent with these groups when they're out in public. I am always left wondering, "but what about freedom of speech?" In some ways, I have considered thos a social experiment that tests our nation's true attitude towards the 1st amendment; go out and do some nazi salutes and carry the flag, and see how the mob begins suppressing the minority with illegal assault, battery, and violence. This is exactly why the the 1st amendment was made: to protect all thougbt, especially the minority. What or who in the University system is teaching these kids to become ideological fascists that want to physically attack, gag, destroy anyone with an opinion that doesn't align. From where I'm sitting it looks like Universities need purging of staff that follow fringe ideologies and are succeeding in getting them mainstreamed through the kids.
If you allow words to hurt you, you’re weak and you’re not prepared for the real world. In order to be able to have an honest conversation and learn, you have to risk hearing things you aren’t going to like or agree with. If you don’t like what hearing, if you’re so offended, vote with your feat, leave, you don’t to listen. The solution is not to prevent everyone else from hearing a speaker because you’re offended.
If the campus is indeed the bastion of the marketplace of ideas, let various speakers contribute their beliefs in detail, and the students can process the information and decide for themselves. For example, a debate between two opposing views is one way people really learn views, with the audience hopefully showing the maturity to listen, instead of air-horning the speaker they disapprove of. Free speech is too important, as the lawyer indicated - let the “unpopular” voices speak - and we will have an accurate basis to accept or reject their message and may even learn something that adjusts our position.
I wish I had finished college and even more so wish I had classes like this, but I ended up going down a different path that had its own rewards. One of those rewards was being able to travel to, live in and go to school in a communist country who’s political views I clearly dont see eye-to-eye with being that I was raised in a different system with a different culture and core system of beliefs. What I learned from my experiences is when you talk to these people, show them respect and have open dialogue (with some exceptions) they give you that same respect and interest. I consider some of the people I’ve met overseas to be great friends and even family. If we had more foreign exchange programs through out the world, I feel like we could make this world a smaller place and treat each other more like friends and family, even if some of us might be the drunk uncle at thanksgiving that everyone tolls their eyes at. 😂
The Prof mentions the Berkeley Free Speech movement in the late 1960's. The Berkeley free speech movement wasn't all about protesting but about being required to take Western Civics as a requirement for graduation. They wanted Western Civics to be replaced with other courses to fulfill their requirements. Today most universities require courses such as ethnic or gender studies to graduate but no classes on Western Civics, History of the West or Western Culture which would explain the Constitution and how American/Western culture was formed. As a consequence, students today think all the Rights they enjoy are normal throughout Human History and judge the past through that lens. The Berkeley Free Speech Movement completely severed students understanding of the past and how we arrived with the notions of Freedom of Conscience, Thought, Speech, Assembly and Association, the foundation of American. Today we have groups demanding the others adhere to their beliefs instead of understanding others do not have to adhere to their beliefs. If students understood the past more there wouldn't be the strife we see today.

The 1A is there not to protect popular speech, but instead, unpopular speech. In the marketplace of ideas, the good ones will stand on their own two legs, just as assuredly as the bad ones will fall on their own. I trust marketplace more than the nanny state to decide what I should hear.
One of the core fundamental of democracy is having conversation. It is listening to people you disagree with and having conversations. As soon as you try to shut the mouth of people you disagree with it becomes a dictatorship.
The speaker who hasn't really thought about his subject is saying that 'hate speech' is expressing a difference of opinion against someone's 'gender identity'. It is not hate speech when someone points out the truth that someone doesn't like.

It's considered 'hate speech' to not pretend that black people are being oppressed or randomly murdered by white people, no matter how many statistics there are clearly showing that the only people oppressing and murdering black people are other black people.
Prof. Bro! I am impressed. Perhaps there is a glimmer of hope that the US educational system returns to a more "neutral" standing instead of a "Hate" factory. Have a safe and festive holiday!
Every non-woke professor in America should be recording every class for either posting or posterity, especially if they are not tenured. It will make it much more difficult for the indoctrination centers to get rid of them.
Not a single university, school, church, business, club, association, or organization has ever allowed freedom of speech: this is why the framers made it the first right.
The accusation of "hate speech" can be used to suppress ANY speech. You ARE entitled to a safe space--your home, your room, your car--where you can escape dissonant words and ideas. But the University is not such a space. In fact, it's the opposite of that. And neither is any other public space or the world as a whole.
You have to recognize that "hate speech" is simply not a thing legally in the US. Speech that makes people uncomfortable is specifically covered by the first amendment. Your feelings are your own problem.
A thoughtful exchange of real free speech is necessarily “provocative”. The trick is to control your response to provocative speech and embrace it rather than viscerally shutting it down.
Free speech should apply the same in all directions, restrictions if any also. Be aware of what you wish it may become reality. In reality free speech on campus is selective
I have spent most of my adult life being subjected to hate speech, for my religious beliefs, choice of career, the erroneous belief that I'm wealthy (my airplane cost $9,000, people!), for my skin color, for being male, for where I live, for how I vote and for the age group that I fit into. I am 100% OPPOSED to laws, regulations or cancel culture demanding that such speech be censored. It is up to ME to not let these words make me do stupid things. This is how ADULTS live. As Robert Heinlein said, the truth cannot be insult and the rest is unimportant. If you find the truth about you to be offensive, change that truth.
What would have been nice is a short explanation on why ‘Freedom of Speech ‘ was included in the Bill of Rights and a few historical examples of countries that don’t have freedom of speech.
Hate speech doesn’t exist. In the United States, we have the right to say what we want, what we feel, and what is the truth. There are instances in which people might be offended by these things, but that doesn’t make it hateful to say, and doesn’t make it illegal to say. Surround yourself by people that agree with you, or get used to the idea that some ideas might offend you, and your life won’t end, even if you disagree.
University should be a safe place physically, but not in regards to emotions, feelings, etc. It’s purpose is to challenge in the non- physical realm. If you graduated never feeling upset, ask for a refund…..
The only speech which needs constitutional protection is that we disagree with, consider hateful, or we simply detest. After all, why would speech we all consider correct, right, and agreeable be protected?
Free speech is 1st Amendment protected! One person’s truth may be another’s hate speech! No politician or professor can regulate or decree what hate speech is anyway! The Bill of Rights protects us all ! Talk is just talk until it is acted upon!

We've become very touchy to say the least. As soon as someone says something the racist, hate, etc. card gets tossed in and all hell breaks loose. We have become too sensitive. As in one of the previous videos, explain your how you feel to the one that is poor, starving and on the verge of death; give it a shot. Screw them, they don't know me, I'd say. I never thought it was "hate speech." You go to College and University to get an education and become an ADULT. NOT to be coddled. NOW, students, and some faculty members are so fragile that they can't handle anybody disagreeing, challenging their beliefs, or have a different view of the world. Therefore, to them it's "hate speech" I'm not talking about racist remarks. Because we are ALL Americans, and humans. I'm talking about religious and political points of view.

In the training they made the statement"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can hurt forever." It was the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard, and they were serious about it.
These days it's more like "Sticks and stones may break my bones but your hateful rhetoric is literally killing millions of people."
There’s no such thing as “hate speech” in the USA” - there’s only speech someone - sometimes almost everyone - disagrees with.
If my parents had ever called a university admin to complain that a class or campus event was expressing ideas that were upsetting to me, I would have been mortified. Are students today calling home "mom, there's this demonstration at school next week that's in favor of things I disagree with, make it stop please I feel unsafe 😭😭😭" ??!
So called hate speech is free speech in the U.S. Nobody is forcing us to listen, walk away.
The interesting thing about "hate speech" is that it presumes that hate is inherently bad, but that is not the case. it is what drives the hate that makes it good or bad. There are things that are objectively evil, and those things should be hated.
I can’t believe that educators have to explain to college students why freedom of speech is important! When I took 7th grade civics I understood that freedom of speech was vital to a free society. But apparently the college kids need that 7th grade education
These guys are being way too safe, as if they're walking on eggshells. I would straight up say "Seeing Nazis and KKK is fine, just deal with it like a civilized westerner; i.e., with speech, debate, dialogue, discourse, etc.". I would rather these groups be out in public aspousing their views so that most people can see it and show their disgust so that others can see that too.
Unfortunately, we have been losing our mental shields against things we dislike or find detestable.
The younger generation only feels freedom of speech means, freedom to speak freely, if you agree with me. Otherwise, you're a fascist who hates (fill in the blank with a protected group)
This is all well and good, you're saying the right things, etc. Can you explain how kids go in, open minded, and come out close minded? What or who in the University system is teaching these kids to become ideological fascists that want to physically attack, gag, destroy anyone with an opinion that doesn't align. From where I'm sitting it looks like Universities need purging of staff that follow fringe ideologies and are succeeding in getting them mainstreamed through the kids.
They don't come out closed minded, they can just smell your BS a mile away.
@@hobbso8508 What, that there are only two genders and not 57?
If you allow words to hurt you, you’re weak and you’re not prepared for the real world. In order to be able to have an honest conversation and learn, you have to risk hearing things you aren’t going to like or agree with. If you don’t like what hearing, if you’re so offended, vote with your feat, leave, you don’t to listen. The solution is not to prevent everyone else from hearing a speaker because you’re offended.
"Facts don't care about your feelings " children in college need to be exposed to challenging ideas.
Thank you ALL for making this available to us! This dialogue is so needed and the tone, tenor and format are so very positive!

There is no right to be free from being offended…
No such thing as “hate speech” it’s called opinions and everyone is entitled to them.
That sounds like Third World Liberation Front. The professor was probably referring to Free Speech Movement.
Thank you for uploading these videos. I think it’s more important than ever to have this kind of open discourse regarding sociology rather than the radical liberal stereotype of the humanities.
Why are these kids simultaneously 'needing this explained to them'... while also being older than 9?
Check out the book The Coddling of the American Mind. It expires this topic in great depth and explains how we are failing this current generation and the next by not preparing them to deal with adversity.
If you restrict false information, how would politicians have anything to say??
I want to go to Penn state 😅 would love to have this guy as a professor
Trust me, only the class and the professor are cool, outside the class people are still not interested in having a conversation on all the topics covered in the class. Some of the students i know personally never engaged in these hot topics for a conversation outside the class.

Gavin McGuiness should have been permitted on a public campus to discuss his ideas or share his humor. His name alone triggers the sensitivities of many. Sad.
If you disagreed with someone whose thought you believe is extreme and considered that person is a hater, then, you really are not ready for the real world.

“We are not your mommy, grow the F up and let others speak, common respect is rewarded, you can’t force acceptance you have to earn it!”
Truth
It's how it's defined that makes it a problem.
It's considered 'hate speech' to not pretend that people can change genders, even if you don't actually hate 'transgendered' people but just don't believe their delusions are reality.
It's considered 'hate speech' to not pretend that black people are being oppressed or randomly murdered by white people, no matter how many statistics there are clearly showing that the only people oppressing and murdering black people are other black people.
These students really don't like to hear that conservative viewpoints should be allowed!
Prof. Bro!
I am impressed. Perhaps there is a glimmer of hope that the US educational system returns to a more "neutral" standing instead of a "Hate" factory.
Have a safe and festive holiday!
i saw in the news today that harvard has been determined to be the US university with the least amount of free speech.
Let me translate…sometimes we have to let a Conservative speaker on campus.
How about on staff and regular speakers?
I don't beleive for one minute 90% of these kids are really listening.
Every non-woke professor in America should be recording every class for either posting or posterity, especially if they are not tenured. It will make it much more difficult for the indoctrination centers to get rid of them.
Jordon Peterson did just that, and it meant nothing.
@@jeffreyscott4997 It's meant nothing except everything that he has accomplished since leaving, including introducing countless people to his message.

Is that a difference in emotional maturity?
Not a single university, school, church, business, club, association, or organization has ever allowed freedom of speech: this is why the framers made it the first right.
The accusation of "hate speech" can be used to suppress ANY speech. You ARE entitled to a safe space--your home, your room, your car--where you can escape dissonant words and ideas. But the University is not such a space. In fact, it's the opposite of that. And neither is any other public space or the world as a whole.
Anyone complaining about hate speech. Is violating someone's constitutional rights.
If a peaceful gathering is attracting violent groups...arrest the violent groups that arrive, instead of punishing the peaceful people.
I would love to see Sam join the crew at Timcast for IRL at some point
My opinion is that you should be able to say and think anything you want, but you can’t do anything you want.
You have to recognize that "hate speech" is simply not a thing legally in the US. Speech that makes people uncomfortable is specifically covered by the first amendment. Your feelings are your own problem.
Choose not to be hurt and you wont be.
Great class, great prof, thoughtful topics. Who's offended and when will he be canceled for trying to expand the thought process?
I was raised to believe when someone speaks badly of you, it's their problem, not yours. So ignore it and move on.
No way this guy grades all those papers. College is a scam, grade wise. This class is probably the best part of their education.
Anyone who wants to stop the exchange of ideas can not validate their own.
Solution, YOU LET THEM SPEAK. To do otherwise promotes FASCISM. In a FASCIST or totalitarian regime, opposition is not given an open platform
What would have been nice is a short explanation on why ‘Freedom of Speech ‘ was included in the Bill of Rights and a few historical examples of countries that don’t have freedom of speech.
Speech is not violence. Sorry it’s just not
Speech is speech.
It is allowed as long as you hate the correct people
Hate speech doesn’t exist.
The of right of free speech is precious and must be protected, for once it is taken from even one person it is lost to all.
After all, why would speech we all consider correct, right, and agreeable be protected?
no such thing as "hate speech" only speech YOU don't like
Free speech is 1st Amendment protected! One person’s truth may be another’s hate speech! No politician or professor can regulate or decree what hate speech is anyway! The Bill of Rights protects us all ! Talk is just talk until it is acted upon!
Interesting to see this lecture after what happened on US University campuses after Oct 7. Jewish students are both attacked and silenced. Blah blah blah gave way to toxicity and Jew hatred.
We've become very touchy to say the least. As soon as someone says something the racist, hate, etc. card gets tossed in and all hell breaks loose. We have become too sensitive. As in one of the previous videos, explain your how you feel to the one that is poor, starving and on the verge of death; give it a shot. Explain that to the one that put his life on the line in war times to give you the voice you use to call foul in any conversation; give it a shot. If you think you can than you are not sensitive to them, are you?
Words do not cause behaviors. People suffering from a sense of righteousnous are the ones causing violence and unwanted behavior. It is that sense of righteousnous that we are seeing play out now.
Amazing contribution thank you for holding at the gates
Weird how hate speech being shut down is only one sided.
as soon as people start talking about "misinformation " i get worried. weve never had an issue about getting thoughts and ideas out to the public... getting "the truth" out and now all of a sudden we have many people in power worroed and trying to shut down tjings that THEY THINK is "misinformation ".
often we find out later it was truth and not "misinformation " at all.
who is deciding whats facts and what is truth? etc
Speech you hate is not hate speech.
I wonder what the professor thinks about all the ANTI-SEMITIC speech from Penn students currently going on.
Watch his channel. He's very much opposed to it. He'll maintain that people have the right to express anti-Semitic views, but he'll disagree with those views and call them out.
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, BUT names will NEVER hurt me." What is "Hate Speech?" And who decides it is? I've been called all kind of names over the years. I took it with a grain of salt.
What a great discussion.
No such thing as “hate” speech. It just speech. Hate crimes are the act of hurting someone with physical violence due to their skin color. Words can’t hurt me unless I am a soft baby adult child.
You should’ve invited the professors and administrators from Penn State to this lecture. They could benefit from being educated about free speech just as much as the students - if not more.
If you hate truth and call truth hate speach then you should not be allowed to go to advanced education courses.
Thanks for the sensible teachings to the students
You said the event on Oct 24th, 2022 was allowed to continue on, but I believe you are refering to the event that was actually scheduled for Oct 25th, 2022 that WAS canceled. It was because of students protesting against something they thought they disagreed with but not because of what they researched independently but based almost 100% on what they had heard about the person scheduled. The university said we support free speach and we are canceling this event at the same time. It can't be both. It's either you(the university) supports free speach or you dont. If free speach is relative than free speach doesnt exist.
Great conversation.

It is important for people to understand that thought is not democratic. We have to accept people regardless of our differences because otherwise there is no way to grow or examine our understanding. It will be a very lonely and frustrating life to assume that one individual can hold all the knowledge and complete understanding and must scream out to get everyone else on the "right" way of thinking.
