Are Man City monopolising the Premier League? | Three Up Front

- As another Premier League season comes to an end, a familiar story unfolds - Manchester City, Premier League champions. Elsewhere, Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town head straight back down to the Championship - with a record low points total.
So with each passing season - is the Premier League becoming more of a closed shop at the top and more difficult than ever to survive at the bottom? In this week's episode of Three Up Front, Simon, Graeme and Troy sit down to discuss Manchester City's monopolisation of the top flight whilst looking at the struggles smaller clubs face when coming up from the Championship.

Troy Deeney's revelation in the episode is that young players want to play for Real Madrid & Barcelona. Who knew!
no one cares about barca anymore, from the best side in the history of football to the likes of depay and raphinha smh
Wouldn’t say Barca but definitely Madrid is an attractive team for the youngsters.
You've missed his point completely, its not so much that they want to play for Real or Barca, its more that he sees the Spanish media and other countries media as less toxic for young players than the UK
Troy isn't on the same level.

1) Souness will say Rashford has had "been in the United first team for five years" (even though it's 9)and then say "he has all the ability in the world" (even though he clearly doesn't"
2) Troy will call United "Man Yoo"
3) Simon will say spurs v Newcastle in Australia is completely fine and overpaid footballers should do as they're bladdy well told. Then in a few weeks he'll slag the same players off for looking lethargic at the Euros

They must be hopping mad.
All 3 clubs who were promoted the previous season stayed up. I didn't hear anyone at that time jumping to the conclusion that it was getting easier to stay up. Yet one year later, all 3 promoted clubs are relegated for the first time in 24 years, and it's suddenly a cause for concern. It takes more than 1 season for a trend to emerge.
Was there this much belly-aching about winning in the PL when MU won 7 of the first 9 seasons including a Treble and a 3-peat? Or in the first 20yrs of the PL, MU won 13 of them or 65% of the PL? OR when LFC was running English top flight in the 1970s and 80s?
Remember, during those times, both LFC and MU were, on the whole, outspending their competition 2x and in some seasons, as much as 3x which was lauded and applauded by the fans and the media. Ironically, they'd all have been in major breach of today's FFP standards.
Shhh that doesn't fit the narrative, utd and Liverpool dome it the right way remember 😂

I promise this is true. I'm in Cambodia, I looked up and saw three city shirts. No other shirts were there at that time. Manchester City advertising is huge here. You see a lot of old Chelsea shirts too. It's like they flooded the Asian market to spread the name. It is working.
Without city the premier league would have been won by game week 30. Despite what people say city made people tune in to watch the run in.. Without them there's no run in.
This is the most random podcast ever.
Nice one lads, looking forward to the next one.
The Day Pep Guardiola will leave Man City is the day they'll go back to default settings. Guardiola is the one holding that entire Man City brand without him they become just like every other team
They aren’t just like every other team though. No they won’t dominate like they are now, but barring a change of ownership there’s 0% chance they aren’t still one of the top clubs year in year out. They make amazing decisions from board level to personnel.
They become like every other big spending team of which they are many in the prem. You keep hearing lazy arguments about the money he spends on players. You can only pay what's quoted. City paying more for Nunes does not make him better than Mc Allister. NO
We won 2 pl before pep came in

I love how Troy is bringing a very interesting point. Man City growth is very quick the younger generation is finding city attractive, and I have seen the growth in support in South African🇿🇦 people buying kits, watching games etc

As a Brit living in Mexico I see the exact same thing. More city shirts than any other English teams here by far.
Exactly the same here on my local village in Tanzania, more city shirt than any one else
When people say City buy all the best players is wrong, Aka wasn’t the best CB but has been coached to be a top CB, KDB was loaned out and sold and came to City and was coached, Sterling wasn’t the finished article when he went there but was coached to be a decent PL goal scorer. Players that they buy other big teams in the league can go for them and get them because they aren’t coming from major teams In Europe. It’s about having a identity of how you want to play and sticking to it and being patient
The media pushes this narrative that every 100 mil player can put in 100 mil performances in any team they go to. NOT TRUE. It's about who's in a set up that suits them and how well they are coached.
It is about cash - and cash only. That's why teams who spend the most win the most. Its not a difficult equation.
You're rewriting history. City have bought 5 out of the top 15 most expensive defenders of all time. Sterling left Liverpool because he wanted to be the highest earner at the club. The season before Pellegrini said it would cost City 100m to sign him. KDB got almost 30 assists in a season at Wolfsburg and was player of the year.
@@thesampsoninstitute like Bayern this season? Like PSG (they don't even win league UN every year), like ManU?
@@paulhiggins2410 I would say KDB, Haaland, Tevez were the 3 let's say smallest risk signings because of the heights they had hit. No other player was a sure success. We've seen Juan Veron struggle, Schevchenko struggle, Sancho, Koullibaly...all big name stars who could not match previous success in a NEW ENVIRONMENT. Sterling hasn't hit the heights before or since Pep's version of City.

Kompany to Bayern is as crazy as Deeney becoming the new Grimsby Town manager.

Ortega for free, 15 mill Alvarez, Kovacic 29 mill, Doku 50 mill, to name a few which were all shrewd business. Nevermind the players we sold like Palmer, Mahrez, Jesus, Sterling etc. It's called shrewd business so maybe other teams need to get their house in order!! MCFC OK
When city want your player the sultan steps of his private jet on to a golden carriage pulled buy camels with 50 armed guards and 50 lawyers he then declares he will only pay 15million , he commands that he’s only paying 29 million ……. You take money to make them leave
Need to get their house in order, okay then, you’re literally seeing finances and transfers at face value even though they’re being charged about hiding their finances lol, there’s a difference between shrewd business and ethical business. If they’ve got nothing to hide then why not show instead of dillydallying the process…
Let's start with Robinho, Aguero, Yayah Toure..... That is where the conversation will begin....
@@jakerose7288 city have not been accused of fudging transfer fees. The idea that all of their other clubs and agents are also lying about transfer fees as part of some big scheme is absurd. It wouldn’t just be City lying. It would be Lille, Chelsea, River Plate, Dortmund etc etc
MCFC continues to have a net spend lower than the top 3 in the league, because we improve players and sell them, and then are harassed about allegations that end 8 years ago. Call us a small club, go for it, we'll console ourselves with our trophies.

You forget the last seven matches of the season we had no fit left backs we lost Richie & Verna as well. Spurs did better than expected after a season of injuries and losing top players for weeks to international tournaments.
Think you will find more kids in the developing world wearing uniforms like Chelsea now than Man U. The fact is since football on television has been introduced to Africa, Asia, Middle East etc, none of the legacy teams have been winning. So there are a few Arsenal fans , but more Liverpool and Chelsea as these are the winners that they had seen and the young have grown up with.

I like Simon when he gives his own opinions normally, but here I wish he would let Troy and Graeme make their points. Simon's questions are sometimes kind of cliched and he should let them give more interesting answers if they want to, instead of forcing them to answer exactly what he wants. Just let it flow Simon, you don't need to be like Jim White. It's 2024.
I don't think City are monopolising the league yet. Yes they've won 6 of the last 7 titles, but 3 of them went down to the last game of the season. It's not as if they are running away with the title every season, like Bayern did for years in Germany.
Munich adminstration is falling apart, they let two good managers go, and instead hired a guy whos unproven, a club like munich does not normally gamble in this way.
City' s fan base are growing exponentially, especially among the younger generations, everyone loves a winner.
Wait until they have their titles stripped. Anything less than that will cause absolute uproar in the Prem. This is a simple money vs ethics situation and whilst there is a decent chance the Prem cave in to their sponsors and TV rights depreciation fears, this is the opportunity to give FFP some actual merit. Newcastle, Utd, Liverpool etc will be leaning on the Prem hard and Everton/Forest will be rubbing their hands with anticipation at the civil case if City walk away from the 115.
Juventus had titles stripped it didn’t slow them down at all they actually went on their most dominant run ever in the Italian league
Simon stick to having 3 Guests, Subbed for Souey and Deeney too
It's not City's fault how Utd and LFC spend their money. It's not City's fault that they buy bums.

I'm beginning to like Simon Jordan, the more I hear him, the chemistry with Souness is very good indeed.
What are Manchester City supposed to do lower their standards?? I don't get this it's for the other teams to get better not Man City slow down. Plus what is this myth about them having a massive squad and having the luxury of buying young players for the future? They have one of the smaller squads in the league and lost mahrez, gundogan, laporte, cancelo and palmer last year.
So ture but that didn't effect us we will win it next year as well
What Man City should have done is not cheat 115 times. That may have helped.

One thing is for sure...without Klopp pushing Pep in the new season, we can expect Pep would announce his City departure at the season end of 2025. Like Klopp, Pep would also take a sabbatical of one year. After that should see him become the Spanish Football Manager.
He hates Spain, he's a Catalan. He will manage England before Spain.
Kompany didn’t give the lads that got us up a chance. He changed the team completely for no reason. It’s been arrogant, stubborn garbage which got us relegated and him the BM job, which is a joke.
If the manager wasn’t VK, he’d have got sacked at Christmas and Burnley would have stayed up.
Was that Graham's laugh?🫣😂🫣😂
The reason why Liverpool did not win a fourth league title in a row in 1984-1985 is threefold obviously Everton got stronger compared to what they were two or three seasons previously, Graeme Souness signing for Sampdoria in 1984 after the European Cup Final never playing a match again afterwards for Liverpool and also Ian Rush being injured for the first ten league games after the Charity Shield at Wembley in the August.
in the beginning of the primer league the other 15 teams were not as strong as the they are now
cant really be a monoploy when arsenal man utd chelsea and liverpool all have big spends aswell. some of those even higher than cities.
As long as teams are pushing City to the last game of the season, it's not a monopoly.
If City were winning by a large margin every season then yes it would be.
It's down to the other teams to pull their finger out and do more though.
I'm not saying I expect multiple teams to challenge for the title, but in 2 games a season each and every team has the ability to try and stop City and not just roll over.
So it's not just down to the Arsenal's and Liverpool's to make it competitive, it's down to every team to have an impact on the title race
But what can the other teams do? City are state owned, and backed by human right violation dirty money.
What can man do against such reckless hate?
@@user-si3rc4ut8s Arsenal were very close to winning the league this season and they definitely don't have a complete team yet.
Liverpool dropped off the pace a few weeks earlier, but had a new midfield, their attack didn't gel towards the end and they had to play youngsters too
Chelsea, United and Spurs all had bad seasons
If all those teams improve slightly it will make a big difference.
As for the other teams in the league, all they need to do is find a way to turn a loss against City into a draw, or a draw into a win and it will make a huge difference to the title race.
Easier said than done, but people act like it was down to Arsenal to stop City, when really it was down to the entire league.
