We did it with Martial, we did it with Depay, we did it with Maguire, and now we're doing it with Antony and Mount.
I think when Sir Alex left, the standards were left with him as he was the main man to set the culture at the club for the players to the staff all the way down to the youth players, at a club like Man United the stakes are so high and the criticism is brutal if you underperform so players need to have a professional mentality at a very young age and that's exactly what we got from the class of 92 and all the successful sides that Sir Alex built
So how can Mike phelan say it’s ten hag fault when he himself says that the players that didn’t put in the shift while he was there remained at the club .. even Ronaldo called those same players out.. so how can you come on air saying that ten hag is at fault .. your argument clearly is contradictory..
Ronaldo ultimately was right, but he went the wrong way about it. Doing the interview with Piers, his attitude + throwing his arms up in the air and general ego-ish behavior reflected poorly on him and undermined others.
Mike Phelan - "A lot of kids today, they play football, but they don't even watch football" - Giving this as an excuse for them not respecting Ronaldo. Says all you need to know about the mentality which at the time existed amongst Staff within the Club.
Ronaldo was right thought right, they even started upgrading the training ground facilities as of earlier this week and putting structure in the team above the manager aswell as now taking into. account the characters of certain players before signing them
Mike (paraphrased): “You (Ronaldo) are a player. Stay in your domain. Can’t be dictating what should be done outside of your role as a player.” This was the problem with the club. Someone like Ronaldo SHOULD’VE had the ok to say those things.
i remember the tipping point between Ten Hag and Ronaldo, arguably United's most dominant performance against Spurs 2-0 win- It could have been 6 or 7. He walked out of the stadium disgusted he had not been on earlier but also fearing that he wasn't needed like in the season before when he was the only decent player in the team. it looked like Utd were a team not a collection of individuals. In my view, he let himself down that day.
Soo, the question is: why a manager like Ten Hag comes in and blanks a player like Cristiano when he is trying to give those standards?? The standards that this club needs?
To be fair Ten Hag was initially chuffed to be working with Ronaldo then Ronaldo didn't turn up for pre-season & publicly tried to push through a move to another club that was in the CL. Then when that didn't happen he turned up after pre-season with his tail between his legs expecting to start which he did & United were awful until Ten Hag had the balls to drop him for the Liverpool game and they started winning without him.

Mike was clearly a small part of the problem, he should have been reminding players why they should be listening to Ronaldo, why they should be working harder, why they should be taking the club more seriously. He and Ole being too nice was part of the problem. Ten Hag wasn’t nice to sancho and everyone thinks he’s the bad one. I’m happy for everyone to want Ten Hag gone but I won’t have it unless players leave with him
Been told about facilities at utd even before cr7 was there. They say a lot of promoted teams have better training grounds better everything then utd do and that’s the problem
The problem wasn't so much a 'Gen Z' thing. That's overly simplistic. The problem was more so a 'too many bad apples possessing the worst qualities of Gen Z' thing. Also, let's not forget that there were some young Man Utd players with a questionable attitude during the Fergie era. The likes of Sharpe, Macheda and Morrison plus Pogba and Lingard both originally played under Fergie.
I dont know the names of the generations but Man united had a lot of cry babies and spoilt brats in that squad. How can a player bypass the manager and ask for leave from the owner?? How can a player launch his brand a few days before a big game?? The attitude was rotten and it still is. Its all the oestrogen in our water system😂🤣
Imagine Todibo from PSG and Araujo from Barcelona defensive partnership . Plus Fofana from Monaco & Onana from Everton, these will not cost a lot of money for Man united but will give us the impetus. where are these scouts surely, what kind of players do they scout.
I think what Phelan is gently getting at is that the youth of today don't respect or look up to their seniors like they used to. Hardly surprising as many kids these days are taught that the world revolves around them, often by parents with a "me me me" attitude. We are beginning to see the outcomes of this unfortunate lifestyle choice and the results aren't pretty.
Mike hit the nail on the head ‘As long as I’m here who cares’ that attitude radiates off these players, they mistake attitude for standards all the time and as long as they can tell their mange’s they play for man United they aren’t bothered about much else

He has been part of a team that has won everything and the team was set up for him because he had the best PR! Ronaldo is a miracle in the sense he is a very average player but because of money he got made out to be one of the best 😂 he was neved one of the best players
@@dondamon4669 We watched his career for the last 25 years, Ronaldo was the best option to replace David Beckham & we were glad SAF got rid of him. We would put Ronaldo in the same bracket as Peter Schmeichel because they achieved.
Now they giving credit to Ronaldo because they want Ten Hag sacked let’s not forget before they criticized him for telling the truth before. Why giving credit now if they didn’t give him before?
This isn't just a football problem with the youth of today. The youth of today are different of the youth 20 years ago, it's a different generation and you need to communicate differently and handle them differently to get the desired outcome. This is because the youth today have not been allowed to grow up as quickly as the generations of old but that's what we have to deal with in our society and adapt to get the best out of them.
Glazers have not invested into the club since they've been their .. tired staduim ,tired training set up ,no longer best in class anywhere ... ineos will struggle to undo all the damage the glazers have done even now there penny pinching because of the owners debt . 1 billion in debt and the glazers just pocketed over a billion 😢
As a club, you should be aware of what type of youth players you have. Because these player will represent your club, your history. Ronaldo came back and standards clearly dropped. Its down to the club to make sure they still have that desire to win.
The way Mike speaks about the issues that Ronaldo observed (such as fall in standards, lack of buy-in from younger players) it’s like he wasn’t involved in the club. But this has all happened on his watch as the assistant coach… shouldn’t he be taking some accountability rather than saying ‘ahh.. the youth of today what ya gunna do!’
What they didnt say was that Ronaldo's main concern is Ronaldo. His ethos is that everyone is there to make him look good, nothing else. He doesn't care about United, he's a Madridsta if anything. Regardless of his record he wasnt up to the demands of the PL and became a toxic influence in the dressing room, so he had to go. That's not to excuse the other c**** who probably did not give him the respect. Lastly, the wages he was on was always likely to be an issue with the other players, even if they didnt say it publicly. Its never a good idea to put someone on 3, 4 or even 5x the wages of other squad members, thats why clubs have wage structures.
That ronaldo interview was planned by Ronaldo, Ten Haag & Richard Arnold. It forced Glazers to let him go, which they had refused up to that point. Ten Hag didn’t have him in his plans, ronaldo was wanted to go, and Richard Arnold was happy to have his £400k a week wage off the books
Unfortunately I think the big issue is the attitude of young players today. If a young player achieves success reaching the top level of football they then think success is achieved because they get the riches and fame. And with the changing culture of how clubs are being run by non football people. There appears to be a lack of real football people around young players to inspire and remind them that reaching a top level club is only half the battle. We must remember that owners like the Glazers don't want competition. They want a closed league to guarantee high level profits. So the way they manage a club is focused on business instinct at the cost of allowing traditional football people to use their nature football instinct.
He wanted t play when HE wanted to play and the way HE wanted to play. The time has gone by and the kids of today are different to the kids of the days when he was young. They must be handled differently. Cristiano wanted to decide HOW the team played. He couldn’t press from the front like Ten Hag wanted him to so he didn’t get to play as much as he wanted.
Let's not forget Ronaldo was 36 when he came back got us carried us through the champions league and was top scorer 36 cmon in his 30s the younger players could've done more you're right
Clearly a comment section attracting a lot of Ronaldo fans. Sure he was right for calling out the standards of the club, the toxic unprofessional environment rotting the ship from top down. The players should have learned from him but it was destined for disaster from the get go. City were about to bid, Ronaldo was ready to join, SAF persuaded him not to. Fact he he even considered City until United offered to pay his 500K wage says a lot shows he did little homework on what he was returning to Had a great personal season in a truly forgettable season as the target man of a limited counter attack team that clearly was not working. ETH comes in ready and willing to make huge culture and standard changes including working hard on the pitch. Ronaldo was not up for it. When he started leaving matches early when ordered not to by his new boss and then point blank refusing to play against Spurs that was it. Gone. Dropped against Chelsea and rightly so. His performances dropped dramatically and wasn't up for pressing as a team. So not only undermining a new manager who was trying to do the right thing by setting standards, he was incapable of working hard. A real club legend would have pulled his neck in and towed the line for the badge. Help the manager bring about changes quicker, even if it meant less game time. Be an example to the very evident hotbed of young talent coming through. But no he has to sabotage his career and status as a club legend by throwing ETH under the bus as if he is a nobody. Sure, throw the glazers, the infrastructure, the toxic environment, the training ground under the bus but not your manager. Best place for him after that was the Saudi league banging in goals in front of 200 fans. Sure who wouldn't for £200+ a season. Left a very bad taste in mine and many United fans who remembered him as a kid exploding on the scene in the early naughties
You bring back to the club one of the greatest players of all time. And you have got youngsters that don't respect him that's the club fault. There must be talented youngsters about, that also know how big and important utd are if not they shouldn't be in the squad
The culture in our great club changed when Jesse lingard was allowed to dance in the dressing room after defeat. David Moyes being weak and ED Woodward and the glazers encouraging brand TikTok players instead of hard working honest old fashioned mentality. That’s why Ten hag is important because he is installing the discipline required.
Its hard to believe how clubs let the tail wag the dog.. if you pander to these kids then you'll get what you deserve. I doubt Pep would tolerate age as an excuse. Reading between the lines i assume Ole was a pushover
Ole was the biggest pushover in the history of football managers anywhere in pro football. He begged players to take the armband. Ask players who fancied carry on playing v Watford. He was like dentist who kept giving a decaying tooth'd patient candy cos they insisted they have it. He supidly imagined that a happy camp would be a succesful one. In the end the players walked all over him.

Doing the interview with Piers, his attitude + throwing his arms up in the air and general ego-ish behavior reflected poorly on him and undermined others.
but finishing 8th reflects better?
@@Ghost-tx4ft strawman
he is ronaldo, lol he can throw his hands up as much as he likes... United is a shambles and deserves no respect
@@Ghost-tx4ftWhat about winning the FA CUP without Ronaldo.
"I think I'm charismatic. I'm a fruit that people want to bite… let's say a strawberry" - Cristiano Ronaldo
This was a great show. Very good insight. Absolutely enjoyed with Mike. It's will better if not being interrupted all the time
Mike Phelan - "A lot of kids today, they play football, but they don't even watch football" - Giving this as an excuse for them not respecting Ronaldo. Says all you need to know about the mentality which at the time existed amongst Staff within the Club.
Not an excuse at all. The younger generation are pampered and don't know the meaning of the word "respect ".
Ronaldo was right thought right, they even started upgrading the training ground facilities as of earlier this week and putting structure in the team above the manager aswell as now taking into. account the characters of certain players before signing them
That has far more to do with INEOS than Ronaldo
Where wpuld talksport be without United. Obsessed HATED ADORED BUT NEVER IGNORED
Insight? My gran could've told me all this
If only he Ronaldo could name which of the youngsters he was referring to…
I think people know... But many of them are british, son You cannot talk about it 🫣
Rashford
Mason Greenwood most likely, other stories back it up
@@saqib_999 i agree with Rashford and even the rest of them.
Greenwood was 100% one of them. He said Ronaldo was dead as in finished. O
When Ronaldo tells you that you are doing it wrong in football, listen to Ronaldo
Erik Ten Hag did not realise the presence of greatness which was at his disposal! Instead of using the gold in front of him he got rid of it
Gold turning to rust. He left for Saudi not back to Madrid
And won 2 cups in 2 seasons ..chatting 💩
Soo, the question is: why a manager like Ten Hag comes in and blanks a player like Cristiano when he is trying to give those standards?? The standards that this club needs?
Standard of whining on a talk show because he didnt had his way? Standard of leaving the pitch early to humiliate the coach?
But when Ferguson sacks Keane off for something similar he was a genius yeah
To be fair Ten Hag was initially chuffed to be working with Ronaldo then Ronaldo didn't turn up for pre-season & publicly tried to push through a move to another club that was in the CL. Then when that didn't happen he turned up after pre-season with his tail between his legs expecting to start which he did & United were awful until Ten Hag had the balls to drop him for the Liverpool game and they started winning without him.
@@MrJKL1980 Just hope you not a dad! Then you may understand why from 1 season to a 2nd in 6 months things got diferent ... Besides that MU manager said things to press that today we all know it was a lie ... Besides that keep dreaming.
Rubbish! His child was sick, then eventually died within the season. Staywoke. The problem was ten haag was not getting the respect and response from the players. They were listening to CR7. Thats why he got rid of dea gea, sancho and him. Garnacho would have followed to suit but, he kept his corner. This season ten haag was spiting garnacho their best player all season. Will forever be gutted about the way it ended with Ronaldo. Always a united legend in my eyes.
Both of them couldn't believe that Mike stood for Cristiano... Tried to shame & question his interview and honesty..
Mike gave excellent insight about current Gen
Didn't need Ole's sideman to tell me that.
Very insightful interview.
And an important one for the MU establishment too. They should take notes!
Most of the players in question like Martial,Pogba and Lingard are young millenials rather than Gen Z.
@@timothydamoulis2574 Good point. The worst generation of them all!

When Phelan is talks about young players, he is talking about Greenwood and Sancho.
This is great stuff from Mike. Also l feel the players and their attitudes are a reflection of certain parts of society today
Dont forget he still scored a lot of goals on his second coming and i am a liverpool fan
Phelan wasn't even at United when Ronaldo did that interview
Ronaldo had winner standards, and some people inside Man United didn't, simple as.
The kids think theyve made it when in the first team but reality it should be there first day. Phealen is a legend
Phelan states "the work ethic has to be there".... I didn't see any work ethic at the club when Phelan was alongside Solskjær.
Then you're blind. Ole got us 2nd. Not 8th
Talking about work ethic mate - never saw much from Pogba, Martial, Lingard, Rashford etc during the Solskjær period. Oh and they won phukk all....

They came second and third. Beat City 4 or 5 times. No work rate? Really?
You can think whatever you want about him at his 2nd spell, but when it came to matters off the pitch, he was absolutely right
This shows you how much influence SAF had on the club after he left the club stood still Ronaldo came back and the ambitions just weren't the same.
With all the progress that has happened in football in the last decade, Manchester United has still been stuck in 2010, with the facilities we have, I still think the best we can get is Top 4.
Ronaldo's interview was done at the end of 2022, and Phelan left the club on the 30th of June 2022, why did you ask him what reaction was when he wasn't at the club anymore?
Ronaldo has been a first Class professional for over 22 years that has won everything in the game accept the World Cup!
Bring him back to Man Utd to be a player/assistant Manager to Ole or Outsider like Zidane cos we gladly have him back at our club!
Portugal had not achieved the Euro success till Ronaldo was there. There's nothing average about Ronaldo, a solid professional since he came to our club.
A lot of kids play football but don’t watch football! So true
I'm so lucky being born a Manchester United fan as no one cares about other clubs
Ppl need to put respect on this man's name. Mike is a serial winner.
You’re tripping.
Advertorial this man said you know😂😂😅😅
Glazers have not invested into the club since they've been their .. tired staduim ,tired training set up ,no longer best in class anywhere ... ineos will struggle to undo all the damage the glazers have done even now there penny pinching because of the owners debt . 1 billion in debt and the glazers just pocketed over a billion 😢
My gut tells me Bruno was a toxic player and did not want Ronaldo to take the spotlight from him
Mike's responses are so mature.
Mike was one of the best guests you have had on
As a club, you should be aware of what type of youth players you have.
Same as when another consummate professional (Roy Keane) said the same about the Irish setup during Saipan. Professional club run by amateurs.
He wasn't even there when the interview happened 😭😭
The guy with glasses was very fast to name Martial , what about Rashford. Bais
Lord Jordanite = Top LAD Proper Clobber 💯 Facts
It worled for Ronaldo. Its the players that made him look bad, like Rashford.
What has Rashford got to do with this? You have got actual quotes from anyone in the dressing room, or just feelings?
Ronaldo was missing open goals mate
Yeah, blame everyone but Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo spoke the truth and here we are .. glad we won that trophy
Can a day pass without without Man United Talksport wouldn't exist.
Thats why he allowed his daughter to wear a Mo Salah shirt.
YESS RONALDO 🎉
people forget how good a player phelan he was at norwich you have to be a certain age to remember
Ronaldo , just told the truth of how far behind the club had fallen and he was right …
Is this the same club where your piss from the top tier rains on others in the first tier? yeah The GOAT was always right!
Good example on how social media is destroying youth
Let's remember through all of this, Ronnie had a baby loss to get through too.
Let’s guess the young players name
- Sancho = party / skipping training
- Rashford = party / drinking
- McTominay = no football brain
Good listen. Simon 💯 right players have shrunk when it comes to putting that shirt on. It’s not an easy shirt to wear.
Fact he he even considered City until United offered to pay his 500K wage says a lot shows he did little homework on what he was returning to
Had a great personal season in a truly forgettable season as the target man of a limited counter attack team that clearly was not working.
Man Utd standards are of that of a league 2 club these days!
When phelan played Ronaldo on the flute
ETH never had top players management skills, why the fallout and why MU paying the price now
