    Oh dear. Spent a lot of time here in 1988, while living in Preston, preparing for my wedding in August. Encouraged my future wife and her mum to seek out all the bridal shops in Manchester (and keep going back, just to be sure) so me and my father-in-law could spend a few hours on Vic.
    And... I never saw the sun in Manchester either!
    PS... I was born in Manchester - spent my first 9 years there. Must be why my skins so pasty 😉

    Nice to see the 47 hauled Transpennine service.
    Six coaches. What made the powers that be think that a 3 car 185 would be suitable in the future. Even now the CAF Novas are only five cars, while passenger numbers are far higher than the days when this was filmed.
    Also many of the commuter services are still two cars today.
    Maybe they will learn one day.

      Do you mean to say people actually exist beyond the M25? Wow, who would have thought, certainly NOT our wonderfull civil service or political elites.....(sarky mode 'on')...anoth galss of Chardonay Gerald.....(oops, sarky mode still on...). Our 'wonderfull elites couldn't give a toss for anything much beyond the M25 so don't get your hopes up of any sort of decent service this century! Where i am a 2 car DMU is normal with the Virgin (notfor much longer though) Vomiters being a more reasonable 5 car which would be great for around here but a bit lacking for a London express service.

    There were a larger number of trains all over Northwest England before 1987! DMUs were longer too! But they started to experiment with once in a blue moon two carriaged DMUs from Southport to Manchester on July 1981 at the roughly 5.20pm service train, and we were all choked standing up like sardines for the whole journey from Southport to Manchester! The same thing happened again in July 1982 with a roughly 5.20pm Southport to Manchester two carriaged dmu train, with passengers crammed in like death camp sardines!

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could well have been BR being squeezed on its subsidy, as the first gen DMUs stated to fail and/or be due works visits, there was no money to repair them so rather than cut the service they reduced the length.....

    Happy days of my youth. The 303s went onto the Glossop/Hadfield line when electrified to 25Kv. The idea being that the route needed sliding door stock after an unfortunate incident a long time ago when passengers stepped of a train on Dinting viaduct in the fog thinking it was at Dinting station

    Ah, Manchester! I’d love to say what wonderful memories but I’m just a wee bit too young to remember all that much of Victoria prior to the Metrolink conversion and the remodelling. Obviously I missed out on so much with all the loco-hauled stock and the lovely 504s (didn’t realise that some lasted in blue/grey til ‘88!) At least Victoria is due to get some loco hauled workings from next year.
    Picc I do remember in it’s pre-refurbished form, but most of the 1st Gen MUs had gone my then (just a handful of ex-Strathclyde 101s on the Hope Valley by then). Interesting, indeed ironic, choice of name for 08790!

      I was just finishing school in Bury at this time. Victoria was pretty horrific as a passenger at this time. Very fun down and very wet in the Manchester rain. I remember the demolition and construction of the arena.
      Variety of trains was great though and having the banker stabled in the centre road often threw up a surprise.
      A 1st gen DMU up the hill to Rochdale or Oldham with a front row seat is something I miss.

    • @30453trains
      @30453trains 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      BlackAndDeckerBoy I’m probably in the minority in that I have absolutely no problem with Victoria’s rebuild. I’d certainly rather wait for a train there than at the windswept and rainy Oxford Road or the through platform at Picc. The loss of loco hauled stock and the first gen units would’ve happened rebuild or not, I guess.

      Each DMU class had its own bodyshell, interior design and exhaust path. BRCW units (class 104) had a bodyshell with wooden interior panels and windows that vibrated to a resonant crescendo towards full revs every time they started in first gear. Other units (e.g. the Swindon and Gloucester cross country units) were heavier and did not vibrate with the engine revs but struggled to reach 60mph even though they had 2 power cars one trailer (lovely deep seats in 1st class though) . Whilst the class 101 Met cams were light and in 3 car formation could cruise all day at 70mph but were annoyingly bouncy. Cravens had the exhaust going through the guard's van but were still super noisy and vibrated to buggery in first and second gear. Derby lightweights had spacious interiors, rode well and did not vibrate too much but were almost always in 2 car power trailer sets so only went above 55mph downhill with a following wind. And so on - although to a standard template every class had its own weaknesses. And all had one weakness though - useless Smiths heaters that often did not work and when they did leaks in the flues allowed the passengers to enjoy the pungent smell of diesel fumes in the passenger compartments.

      Soi Buakhao l used to commute by train between Scunthorpe and Doncaster back in the late 1970s and would get to the station early just to watch the action in the then very busy marshalling yard. As you say, not uncommon to see 2 or 3 gronks all scurrying around simultaneously. As an aside, did you ever get to see or film the class 13 “master & slave” supergronks in action at Tinsley Yard ( effectively 2 permantly coupled gronks with the cab of the “slave” unit removed) It would be great if you had any footage of that.

With such a growing city a Victoria station with significantly more capacity than the tiny station that holds the name Victoria today would be invaluable. The trouble was BR was always strapped for cash so looked to make money where ever it could. Ridership was on a downward trend, they never imagined the massive population growth plus rise of internet and devices, all of which added to rail's passenger increase!
