  • A vid from 1990 at Stoke-on-Trent. A nice variety of traction, loco hauled passenger trains both diesel & electric, class 304 & 310 EMUs, Sprinters and class 20s & 37s on freight. And see how many MkI coaches you can spot. Even in a MkIII rake there are MkI buffet vehicles! If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

    Great video and the coal rakes and 37s are iconic of that era.

    This brings back memories - being from Crewe would often pass through Stoke when out and about chasing haulage. Steel and coal trains long gone now. I remember once Cockshute depot closed they’d lineup locos in the other bay platform - often have 4 or 5 pairs of 20s there. Great stuff.

      Thanks for your memories.....i imagine Stoke is faily quiet now unless freight is on diversion?....

      Thank you. I went there for a bit of freight action, and was not disappointed. And of course just about everything i filmed is now history! The camera i used took full sized E180 VHS tapes so i kept the quality up unlike systems with small tapes that had to be copied over to VHS. Transfering to DVD in later years on a high definition setting kept the sharp pictures. You do loose a bit of quality uploading to TH-cam but it still looks good for its age.

    This is pretty much how I remember Stoke from when I first visited in the (very) late 1990s- I believe it’s changed quite a bit since then, with the centre through road being lifted for one thing. Was that 310 on the Stoke-Stafford local? I travelled on it just before it was finished up, and it was down to a 153 by then ( I was pretty much the only passenger on it) so 4 coaches seems like over-provision indeed! I had no idea that Mark 1s other than BGs survived this late on the WCML. Thanks for sharing.

    Fascinating video. I was a student in Stoke at that time, mainly living a stones throw from the station, had spells commuting to/from Longport 88/89, Man Pic 91, with other ad hoc trips to Stafford, Crewe, Euston etc etc. The sounds really being it back. I hadn’t remembered the coal trains at all, steel to/from? Shelton was common through the station. There were also plenty of staff and it reminded me of the ‘porters larking’ line from a poem at school. There was a Nestles chocolate vending machine on pl. 2. Happy times.

      I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Not sure where the coal was going to/from though..... The steel came from Teeside and i beleve headed to South Wales....

      I was a student until 2 years ago, its interesting that a lot of the surrounding area looks the same and the parts were like before they were changed like the carpark.

      @@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus the coal might have been going to Meaford Power Station which was still operating at the time. Possibly coming from Barrow.

    Thank you for posting this great video. Born and raised in North Staffs I've boarded and alighted trains at Stoke station many times over the years. Childhood holidays to Devon, trips to see relatives in London, teenage days out to Manchester and Birmingham to go record shopping, and the period shown here was just before my student days started and the regular journeys to and from Leeds for university. And of course coming back to watch Stoke City! Happy days.

    Why is there a clip of a underground train at end of stoke on Trent and Carlisle videos,?

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The clip is added to the end of all my videos in order to put up the end cards and not obscure the end of the actual video i upload. The reason it's a shot of a train leaving a station is it's 'the parting shot' at the very end of each vid.

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never had a cam-corder! I first used cine, then in 1985 I brought a Panasonic M1 vid camera that took E180 VHS tapes. No need to transfer so kept the quality up.

    • @limeyfox
      @limeyfox 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s a Manchester-Euston service. Intercity WCML pool lost a number of Mk3 coaches in the Colwich accident and were forced to make up the shortfall by transferring a rake of refurbished Mk1 vehicles from the MML. They normally worked the lowest-tier expresses such as Holyhead and Aberystwyth/Pwllheli in the summer, but here have clearly turned up in a rake working a Manchester diagram. They were never able to work push-pull and the shrinkage of IC routes in the early 1990s allowed their withdrawal.
