This is top Class 40 action with some great Red Bank Sidings and Manchester Victoria footage. This needs putting on a dvd. Excellent stuff! John Wantling, Rochdale
They are a system of disc based train headcode indicators. This rather simplistic sytem was replaced with a set of rolling vinyl headcode indicators which could convey far more information. Go to the cfps site for more info.
From a Holbeck Man, excellent footage, can remember working parcels jobs to Redbank Sidings, saw a couple of Class 50 there once or twice.....redbank soon to be a housing estate, WHAT A LAUGH.55A
fantastic vid,,, i loved the 40's... when we were kids we called them "whistlers" (for obvious reasons lol) bet even now in my mid 40s i dont know why they and the 20's whistled??
97 405 - 97 408 were class 40s retained for departmental (engineering) use after the class had been withdrawn. 40 012, 40 060, 40 118, and 40135 were the locos involved, only '060 not being preserved. Its likely that there would have been less preserved 40s had these locos not had a 2 year additional lease of life.
The Class 37,40,and 97, at first glance to me, they nearly look the same! But I know some of the mechanics and designing on the locomotives are different from the other class after a good long look.
40s and 97s the same . 97s were renumbered 'withdrawn' 40s. 37s have a similar cab and 'nose' to 40s, but have 3 axles on their bogies, whereas 40s have 4 axles
Did I just see.......A GRONK? 😧 i dont understand why they kept the Syphons on as station pilots and breakdown locos but scrapped all the Whistlers 😢🤷🏼♂️
Red Bank is/was a classic rail location, with LS Lowrey's famous steps and footbridge in the background! 🚂👍
Wonderful footage. Thank you.

It’s the turbos Tinkling at tick over. Whistling when it starts to spin up.
