- This is unedited tape from my VHS Camera/Recorder, I realise that it falls short of todays digital output but this was 1988 and 30 years is a long time, after all it is better than nothing so I hope you enjoy it.

Was there just this week and I honestly can't recognise any aspect with what I see here! The whole area has changed beyond all recognition. Not entirely for the better but such is life.
I was born in 2000, so I never knew how big Victoria used to be.
Time stops for no one. And these videos are proof of this. Amazing videos. Full of nostalgia.
Good grief I closed my eyes and its just like I remember it, same old faces hard at work in the Card School playing "Myth Rhumy", must have been a Pay day judging by the cluster of Railwaymen round the "Bandit," TA Jones in his usual Joking manner, "Windy" Miller, Harry Baguley, Lees, Robbo and Eugene with the unforgettable McKay bellowing down the phone, is it really all that length of time back?

Why was the Cheetham Hill Line closed? It was an easier route to Newton Heath and beyond! The trackwork at this time was far better than today. Transpennine services were in the hands of class 47s and didn’t touch Piccadilly! Stalybridge-Stockport was there to assist joining services out of Manchester Piccadilly.

Terrifyingly poignant for those of us who were there then. I was 22 days shy of my 27th birthday when you were filming that, Eddie. I'm now 59 and 2 days old.

captures everything about victoria at that time , i weep at the wanton destruction when i visit now , i avoid a lot as too many ghosts ,, many fondly remembered visited places for me east west junction , deal street ( never went in irwell bridge ) the train crew rest room balcony ate lunch there often with many great charachters never got on east junctions roof those shots were terrific happy days i'd happily go back to
Surely it's so much better now? Victoria could be an incredibly dark, sleazy place back then.
@@zeddeka newer isn't necesarily better , at least we could afford the fares and get a seat

Fabulous video, how unusual and interesting to see in the signal boxes and back stage as it were, times have certainly changed, virtually unrecognisable. Thanks for sharing.
Cracking footage. The last five minutes or so are an absolute joy to watch.
for sure saw footage of a great old friend just being his happy self , not heard but i'd reccon he has passed on now either that or he'll be nearly due a telegram

Brilliant insight into another world of BR,so good you have recorded the side of the railway,the public don't see.I wonder how many people on here, recognise themselves, or people they worked with\?.great film, thanks for uploading..I worked at Stockport,most of my signalling life,so don't know anyone on this film, but I am sdo pleased to see the way of life on the Lanky and Yorky side of Manchester.

Brought back some memories. I joined BR as a trainee signalman and the signaling school was upstairs in the offices at Victoria. I used to get the train off Platform 11a every day, back to Liverpool Lime st. About quarter to 5 it would be a 142 packed to the gunnels. Happy days.
Priceless, a few staff faces there I recognise, despite being there for 18 years I was surprised how much I'd forgotten. Like the ticket barriers, which must have been removed not long after this was filmed. Happy days, leave 10p on the messroom table if you went to the club, the photos on the wall next to the one armed bandit, better than a safety shoe poster. Cheers, Bob Taylor.

If only someone had recorded Station Staff etc So we could replay stories & events, be intersesting to put names to faces long gone.

My grandad worked as a driver at this station during this time I was hoping to see him in the mess room but he’s not there 😢

Interesting footage , I liked the screen that had every train on time , i used victoria all week in those days and it was more delays than on time .
How ultra modern the Spacers and Printers - I mean Pacers and Sprinters looked in an environment that was virtually unchanged from the 1950s at least. Tyseley DMU 5:00 was a bit out of area.

Destroyed by the metro? More like destroyed by the arena built on top of the through platforms. In fact the through platforms were still there when the metro came into operation.
@@blooga3941 Yep totally agree with you there mate. We didnt even need the metro full stop in my opinion not even to link Manchester Victoria to piccadilly as a perfect link already was there. The Windsor link alot to do with Victoria's downfall and then the Arena was the final nail In the coffin
@ Richard Don't talk rubbish, it was the arena that obliterated Victoria as we knew it...the space the Metro occupies is about 3 platforms...stupid comment.

was there a reason why when the sprinters were new they went to Newton heath first before moving to other depots, a couple of them I've seen on this brilliant video are now with arriva trains Wales.

I remember reading that Victoria station had really bad problems with drugs and prostitution in those days. Is that right?

In case anybody does not know Eddie (Edwin ) passed away about two months ago, he was 88 years old.

Good quality. What camera ? I had a Panasonic M7 (VHS) camcorder in 1988.
How did you get permission to film in the control centres ? Did you have to arrange it in advance ?
