My friends and I stayed at the Marriott Melrose Arch hotel when we were there last year. It was the most beautiful hotel I ever stayed in. I absolutely love that WHOLE area.

Oh, wow! I wish I had known you were here. I’ve been living in Melrose Arch for almost a year (Whiteley Rd.) It’s cool and convenient, but is a “bubble”. My gym (Moove), spa, Woolworth, bank, Starbucks (other restaurants), mall are all a pleasant, short walk from my front door. I could have given you a Black American viewpoint living in the Arch. Let’s talk soon. I appreciate you, your family and the channel. Btw… there are 3 Marriotts. (Marriott, African Pride, Protea) The artwork changes per season. All but one gate closes at 9pm (safe but annoying). My favorite black owned restaurant is Cuisinos (next to LaParada). Melrose Arch is Johannesburg’s version of Atlanta’s Atlantic Station - Live, Work, Play compound. Also the Arch is load shedding proof

@thabomazwayi4422 meaning it feels a bit insulated due to the high security and surveillance. I access my building using my hand (biometrics), and everything I need is in the Arch (doctors, gym, spa, grocery, mall, restaurants/bars). I often leave to go to my friends' houses and other events in Sandton, Sandhurst, Hyde Park, Fourways, Bryanston, Soweto, Houghton, Alex, Melville and Rosebank). When I'm in the US, they use my place as a getaway to enjoy the Arch. With all the big hotels, it feels more transient and temporary. I'll keep a place here, but in the long term, I'm not so sure.

The "residential" area is actually a Boutique hotel called African Pride, also part of Marriot. I did my chefs training there in 2019

Thanks for the walk aling Ricky. I really like Melrose. I will stay there on my 2nd visit to S.A. Convince, I love it. May get a temporary spot there until i figure out where to reside in S.A. I live in the A, and it does give Atlantic Station vibes.
Curious - Why are ya'll leaving America? I know many people who would jump at the opportunity to move to the US. I watch tons of American city street walk videos and I always envy how nice, clean and developed your cities are and how lively they are everywhere you go and anytime of the day.
@@Ultra_Magicc The systematic racism there makes life for Black Americans not so dandy. The standard of living is crazy. Check the real estate prices. Since COVID it's become close to impossible to buy a house there. It's a no-brainer, America is not as great to live in as it may seem from the outside. It's still a great country no doubt but the problems are almost swept under carpet while all the great things about the country are displayed for everyone to see.
Then they get here with their salaries paid in Dollars and they find properties sometimes even 10x less expensive than in America. If you could find a country with a culture close to yours or even better than yours in some aspects with friendlier people, great weather, more people that look like you (lets pretend you were a marginalised minority in SA) and mansions worth R500 000 would you not consider going there?
Then there's a spiritual aspect to it. The actual main reason. Something greater than most people realise. But that's a topic for another day 🙂

I've been too exposed to Foundational Black Americans who always talk crap about Africa and how America is perfect and would never move to a 3rd world country. Yes for sure those people are part of a minority of AA however, it makes me both happy and also curious why South Africa is their ideal destination.
Yes I know the cultural aspects to it. SA is like the US but in Africa in some ways and yeah the cheapness is appealing, but I do get sort of worried that they won't get the experience they were expecting living here. I guess being born and still currently in the city for a whole time, more negative things get to you than positives, so whenever outsiders complimenting Joburg, it warms my heart but also makes me wonder if they mean it or not.
That is exactly what I did as a temporary place until I decide where to buy. It's super convenient..you can walk to everything you need. I moved from Chicago but went to college in the ATL in the 80s (School Daze days😁)

There are Gautrain buses from the Rosebank Gautrain station that have stops at Melrose Arch.
had busines meeting few wees back...sadly there was not a single SAn waiter in all the restuarants, these are jobs we did when we were in tertiary for pocket money, taken by adults from other countries....its really sad

I love Melrose Arch, it was build towards 2010 FiFA World Cup to accommodate many people. Now many places copied the concept of Melrose Arch like Umhlanga Arch in Durban, City Centre in Steyn City, Harbour Arch in Cape Town, and upcoming Arch in Nelspruit 🇿🇦❤
Some of those developments are being done by Amdec group, the same developers of Melrose Arch.

The gyms at Melrose Arch are in a league of their own. You pay a premium for VIP experience.
Melrose arch is a vibe .. And it is part of Joburg...these are exclusive addresses in the city.. Not everyone can just walk in the gates ..you need to look like you know your story or security will just turn you away

With regard to public transportation, you can take a Gautrain bus from Rosebank station to Melrose Arch. Gautrain buses go to many areas around Johannesburg, where there are no Gautrain stations.
I don't know why I never thought about using the Gaubus. How much is it?

If your eyes worked properly, you would have noticed Melrose is new, it was built when it was the black government running the country. Even Sandton was built recently and Waterfall.

I kinda feel like if you really concerned about security, Joburg not the place to be. You just gotta be prepared for the worse and just living here it's stressful. I LOVE this city and I started appreciating it more after my stay in Cape Town. I really really hope it gets the attention it needs from the government cause they are sitting on money since this is a very rich city culturally and financially.

Johannesburg has a number of safe areas, but you must earn a good salary to live there. It has many gated communities, and that is where most of the African Americans are going. Most of these places are at world class standards. Furthermore, malls in Johannesburg are also at world-class standards. Some people only think of Johannesburg CBD, when they talk about Johannesburg, but Johannesburg has many self-contained mini-cities which are world class.
The fact that you are saying the government must do something about Johannesburg, it clearly means you are talking about the CBD. Many areas, which are safe in Johannesburg are controlled by developers and residents. The government is not involved.
Where do you live in Johannesburg? I assume you are not a South African. You wouldn't be so stressed if you were.

Johannesburg is the city of choice for most African-Americans who can afford to move to South Africa. I’ve been living here for almost a year, and I absolutely love it. Cape town is too white. I do love Durban, however, because of the beaches and I work with an organization there. As far as the safety concerns, I feel extremely safe living in Johannesburg even walking the streets. I moved from Chicago Illinois, so I am not intimidated or fearful for my safety.
