Hey there family I think some of what y'all have mentioned here are just bad habits not necessarily "culture" because we too (as South Africans) become appalled when we witness these occurences. It's not necessarily "entrenched in our dna" as culture would be lol🥴🥴

I’ve seen that in London. I was at a salon in Brixton and a lady walked in selling clothes she’d clearly shop lifted from Marks & Spencers. Not unique to SA at all.
We haven't and we wont! We prefer to have receipts for our purchases!

The side business is not necessary side business. It is theft from the actual business in most instances and leads to job loss when they are caught. It is really upsets me when they do that and always tell them that they are “playing with their jobs” 😳😳😳😳😳
Orange/red lights = emergency services normally accompanied by sirens
Blue lights = government official security
White lights are suspicious I have not seen them as a South African.
It's rare to see a woman relieving herself on the side of the road. People lack self respect. It's not good at all. Talking as a senior citizen. There used to be R50 fine if you were caught or spend a night in a police cells but now our justice system is not functioning. ❤You and God bless you.

The main issue is that there aren’t toilet facilities readily available especially in small towns and rural areas.
@@KingKumiMD Good morning. There are plenty of public toilets in this country. There is even by the Bus and Taxi ranks, even there you see men relieving themselves behind toilet walks. Some, downtown has been vandalized. Again it is not an excuse to be indicent in the public eye. All main supermarkets has publm toilets. Let's keep our environment healthy. ❤️
hahaha ...the "hello goodmorning"part ...... i experienced in pretoria and i know i do have manners and was brought up properly . people will never proceed with out being greeted. which if you think about it should be a given ... but when we are so preoccupied with what we are doing and needing to accomplish we just don't give it a though . i used to be shocked and at times felt like rubbish for not starting with a hello lol . but I love it too .
Blue lights - police
Luxurious cars driving in a convoy with blue lights( mostly black ) - VIP protection ( high ranking gorvenment official)
Red lights - Fire or ambulance
White lights - private security ( you are not obliged to stop for them if you feel you are unsafe ..you indicate to them that you will stop in a public place (gas station or police station) ..some private individuals do have white flashing lights just for clout ,but by law they are not allowed to do so
Orange lights - mostly construction vehicles
People not stopping at red lights is probably to avoid hijacking.
That only happens at night!😮😮

I definitely got that speaking correction several times from the mall to almost anywhere. Speaking before you ask for something ❤ especially the security.
Oh yes, they are quick to let you know how this flows and I get and respect it! We still have learning to do. lol
The siren makes us aware that the police officers need to rush somewhere but if you see the lights, don't need to make them pass....
BIn S.A. you must greet before you ask something. Talking to a person before greeting shows no manners.
If things get bad were you went people will say sorry we won't help you because you did not greet us. It's South African to greet even you don't that person because something bad may happen to you.
Even when you get in the taxi you must greet for the sake of if you faint they will give you a help.
My kids greets first in the morning not me first. It is how we were raised. Me when they wake up they all greet me.
And it is usual that elders won't greet you cheking what will you do.
This is the way of showing respect to our elders. You as as a younger person you must always greet the old person first.
What I have noticed here in Joburg as someone from Durban, who also lived in a rural area ,is that people here are impatient and aggressive on the roads....more especially Taxi drivers. In other provinces people drive so much better than here in Gauteng. DO not buy or even entertain employees or anyone selling products that are also sold in the store,they are stolen from the same businesses. Dont entertain them!!
BY THE WAY, WHEN THEY SAY SAWUBONA, in actual fact it means " me and my people see you/acknowledge your presence" and hence it's offensive if you don't greet them first, but in most Western type establishments, you're likely to experience different viewpoint

I appreciate your observations and consideration towards people who are releaving themselves on the side of the road ... the key thing is to try to be discreet as we are human, and when nature calls, you have to answer ... speaking from experience, by the way, be respectful ... however, walking up to somebodays front gate and just doing your thang is a no no ... some people here in the comments are too caught up in their privileged lifestyle and forget that small observations and consideration you made Mr Rick

BS. If the women can control themselves, the men can too. It’s uncivilised and disgusting to do it in public, especially in a busy area. You can be poor and have some respect for others.

Hello guys. Great content. Police cars will be marked as SAPS(South African Police services), they do have blue lights. Second one is JMPD(Johannesburg Metro Police Department), they also use blue lights. Then you have cars for Politicians also known as VIP, they also use blue lights. In most cases they are top of the range cars such as Mercedes Benz or BMW's. They prefer black colors and they move in groups.

i think the word culture is losely used , i believe culture is something you are proud to do and are allowed to do, and urinating in public is just not one of them, we (my family and I ) are just as upset when we see it happening, i guess being diverse means a lot sometimes...

I dont know why the part of acknowledging one as as Human before proceedings to business hit me so hard, but it did! I think its because i immediately thought of when my mom who was in her late 60s at thw time reported her license plate stolen. The cops happen to stop her as she was taking her laundry& shopping cart out the car, SEVERAL officers surrounded her with their fire arms deployed. Accusing her of stealing HER car.. if we first STOP and treat eachother like HUMANS... life could be better for all!

This might be slightly controversial and I mean no harm, could you please advise the American brothers and sisters coming this side to try not to go too extreme in embracing the African culture by wearing traditional African attire particularly West African as they may be confused for Nigerians and that will make their stay very sour in the country, they honestly won’t enjoy their stay, we have a Nigerian problem and dare I say “African” problem in SA and we wouldn’t want our beloved American brothers and sisters getting caught up in it, the traditional Tswana gear Ricky wore in one of the videos was perfect, anything traditional from outside SA borders might be too risky, apologies if I offended anyone, just felt it would be necessary to mention
The street peeing is really embarrassing most SAns are not proud of that bad behaviour, but I learnt from reading the comments here that there’s a history behind it that which comes from apartheid, it’s still inexcusable
Say it louder. If you in SA and probably wanna embrace the SA culture, try to wear one of SA traditional attires.... not just any ' African ' attire because u will pick the Nigeria attire and end up attracting unnecessary stares from people thinking that u are Nigerian.
Me and my family are just as shocked as you are , especially by people who just relieve themselves anywhere . Iam a proud South African who has lived both in rural and urban areas. But still just as shocked with most things that you guys find shocking .
Blue light are for law enforcement and politicians. Orange lights are for construction vehicles. White lights are for private security. Red lights are for emergency vehicles

No our services are definitely cheaper. Every income bracket have access to beauty services. In America it's very expensive and exclusive

Most people here will not respond to you if you don't greet.
The reliving yourself in the street started happening during apartheid when there were no toilets for blacks in the city centers and owners of properties who were white mostly wouldn't let blacks use their toilets so we relieved ourselves anywhere we thought we could, so as men it is easier than it is for women so you will hardly or never see a woman doing it.

From Cape Town and lived in Joburg for a year and a half and was culture shocked by those things.

Yeah the public thing is crazy to me and I've seen it with cars so nah, they can go to a station. However, I've seen it every time I'm on the road at least once. But hey I guess it's not a crime in SA.

Don't stress about that just have to be careful when driving. People are always in the rush and even in the afternoon. They behave when they see a traffic cop or a police officer. You will end up getting late because of traffic

Hello Joneses I agree the men are peeing on the streets I see them on Winnie Mandela Street by Dainfern on that corner! I see them clearly from the car ! That needs to be against the law in my opinion. Indecent Public exposure is a law in the USA 🇺🇸 . South Africa 🇿🇦 should adopt this law . Security is greater in South Africa than in the USA 🇺🇸. The USA 🇺🇸 has a false sense of security, I see that just from how security is where I live in South Africa very tight. I still love being and living in South Africa 🇿🇦!!!1

Both the walking and relieving on side of the road are legacies of the apartheid era. Learned behaviour will you. There weren't ablution facilities for us in "their" areas back in the day. So, people would relieve themselves prior to entry of segregated areas.
Actually reliving yourself in a public space is also illegal in South Africa, its called public indecency and could lead to arrest but I think latetely our police officers are busy with what they consider serious crimes and they don't have capacity to deal with public indecency matters anymore 😉
Its not common for police to pull you over when driving behind you, just indicate and move out the way, they bound to be on their way somewhere, I just slow down slightly, indicate and move over, for all flashing lights. If you do not feel safe with the flashing lights trying to pull you over, you may drive to the nearest police station and let them get you there, that way you know if its a real cop or police.

@@siyabonganxumalo4574 Trust me, it's very common. I am a Mountain Biker, the guys that service my bike are always offering me bike parts at half price. Mshikashika is everywhere bro...very common. Especially in Pretoria and Joburg.
We didn't ask nor can tell where they are from. It happens with us quite often! We share a couple of instances of many!

As for greetings, in Joburg you can get away with it.
However, in Pretoria is a must, you greet from the security guy at the gate, to the sales floor person and the lady at the cash register.
You can't jump into a person without, "Dumela, mma " ( Setswana, for hello mam " or "Dumela, Rra (Setswana, for Hello sir).
About driving and other problem, Joburg is a fast paced city, you have to be street wise and all that to live in there.
Even those of us who do not live in Joburg is a nightmare to drive in Johannesburg. I actually made a vow not go anywhere close to Joburg. As people there look miserable and stressed up.
It is even worse when your car uses non GP registration, such as, L (Limpopo), Northern Cape (NC), NW (North West), FS (Free State) and MP (Mpumalanga), there's an assumption that we none Gauteng people are not city smart, we are laid back people.
So, the problems you have mentioned so far are essentially, Joburg city problems. In Joburg people are on a survival mode, it a dog eats a dog kinda situation, people will do whatever it takes, to make money.
That is why a lot people, are leaving Gauteng towards a more quieter and slow paced life, like the Vanderbuil Joburg North, Muldersdrift, Hartbeespoort, Pretoria East etc.
Wow! What did Joburgers ever do to you? All the bad things belong to Johannesburg, but the good one belongs to Pretoria?😂😂 Greeting is a South African thing, the whole country does it.
It's not Joburgers' fault that noone is interested in Pretoria, except maybe Foreign Embassy people. Stop hating Joburgers!😢😢

The only Joburgers who move to Pretoria are forced by circumstances. Those who move to less developed places, are just moving away from city life. So, they wouldn't go to Pretoria, because it's still a city, even though it's sleepy.
I am from KZN, but I have been fortunate enough to live in Pretoria East and Johannesburg North. The main difference between the two cities, is that Joburg and Joburgers are about wealth and high life and Pretoria is about government and moderate living.

The culture of Joburg, the dog eat a dog mentality of Joburg, the city is a monster that lack humility, and sadly in a partn of self destruction. You guys can't even take care of your environment, the infrustracture, etc that you live in. You all look fake and miserable and turn the entire city into a ghetto. Yet your ego is on another level. However, the most upmarket mall in Pretoria, Menlyn Park has a dirty side where taxes park. I have not seen such a dirty side in big Johannesburg malls.

And besides, Cape Town CBD policing, CCID(our central city security, almost like police but not) , who also has arresting rights , will slap you with a huge fine quick fast😂😂😂 As for driving 😅, I'm in Cape Town, own a car but don't drive😂because anxiety 😅 here the taxis are kings of the road and us little motorists, we abide because we are scared of them 😅so we let them go create 5 lanes where there are really only 3 😂🤣

Wrt lights, here in the Cape, we look at the markings on the government vehicle, look at the name badge, it must always be displayed. When it's a single government vehicle pullover at some random place, we don't stop, we drive to the nearest police station and whoever flagged us down can get us there. And also, here in Cape Town, Traffic roadblocks are usually conducted with Metro police. And if sirens are coming up behind you, we give way for all lights in a 'state of emergency'. ✨

There's a word for those "outside establishment sales", it's called Mshikashika. 😂😂😂😂 Basically, you're knowingly participating in dodgy dealings. It was a form of protest against white/Indian business owners back in the day. If you can afford products just pay full retail price and avoid Mshikashika.😅😅 Otherwise you may find yourself in front of a Judge..

Embarrassing South African men who pee in front of their children and women but I think lack of running in poor rural areas made them to get used to that. Other African countries men also do it. Thieves employees who still products and customers from employers illegal. Gauteng is the whole world in 1 province. People there operate differently from other province because they are coming from different countries and provinces. Behavior and driving wise reckless because of rushing and high crime. Hijacking can be done sometimes while waiting for robot to change green. Ask people from other provinces they will tell you that Gauteng provision is rough. The way you walk when you enters Gauteng should change. If not the criminal will quickly pick that you a new in town. Enjoy your day
