I really enjoyed this. This little junction would make a wonderful subject for a small HO shelf layout. Cheers.

They were used on all trains until (IIRC) the 1980s. Many railroads still use them on long push moves, rather than have the conductor hanging on to the ladder on the last car for miles.

After 40 years of driving a truck sometimes I'll help the crew of the CI&W branch line that supplies the plant that we haul raw materials to and after a few times helping them I finally learned that trucking is a whole lot easier than what a railroad does.

OK. I live on the BNSF E W mainline right on Sunset Falls. The Sunset Falls Trestle is the main focus of my front room window, sans Sunset Falls. I get 20 or 30 trains a day, depending on the day of the week. Some of the more standout trains have the re powered GP 38's, and 39's. We are also seeing more and more GP 60B's in a new version of the Heritage paint scheme. Lots more Santa Fe War Bonnets too in GE and EMD configurations. Finally, seeing all the new Progress EMD SD traffic is a real welcomed change from all the GE junkomotives that are failing all the railroads like flies. One of my BNSF management and operations friends states it real well: the railroads bought all the GE stuff because it was cheap. It was never built to last like EMD. Most Class 1 railroads are bringing out hundreds of older EMD stock, repowering them with 1010 primes, and putting them back on revenue service. I come from a long line of railroaders, and every generation of my family has been in railroading back to the mid 1800's.
