      @@abrahammatthewanandamarro4352 guess they should dispose of them, then wonder where replacements will come from.
      Maybe, China. Oh wait, tariffs...
      Do more with less, eventually dwindling down to nothing, locomotives patrol, looking for an aluminum car, fuel costs bankrupt the railroad, back to horses or sea.
      If UHaul though that way, they'd no longer exist, beyond a local area.
      They learned from the rail system.
      As a hint, some cars can weigh 100 tons or more, loaded, do you really think it costs that much to shuttle them to where they can be refilled again?

    2 bangs were slack action. Happens all the time. Usually, that means they broke a knuckle when it goes into emergency like this. That smoke you mention was the heat coming off the cars. Usual stuff. Nice video!

    • @waldwickperson
      @waldwickperson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      If the engineer throws it in Notch 8, or full brake application (without going into emergency), the slack action can get pretty rough lol

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +waldwickperson I understand. The only thing I wonder about is that the train was still accelerating when the 'bang' happened, and the braking came thereafter. Furthermore, there was no reason for an emergency braking, as far as I can tell (that an emergency braking was performed I learned from the communication between crew and dispatcher).

    • @waldwickperson
      @waldwickperson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Ah ok. If it was on a grade, the tail end of the train probably caught up with the cars, and pushed them more than the engines pulling them

      I wonder if any derailments have happened that way.
      Unfortunately I can't think of any way to implement an easy to use (and reliable) safety system that would prevent that ... (plus it would require changing the braking effort ... so yeah if something goes wrong the brakes might not be strong enough to stop quickly enough in certain circumstances... lol)

    Go to 6:04 and watch the cars closely (affix your eye on one spot on the car, like a wheel, etc..) ... you can see them lurch forward when the bang is heard. That's slack :P

    • @spvillano
      @spvillano 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Dated, but yeah, lost slack, then slack tightening due to emergency.
      But, some other speculation suggested a broken coupler, no, not enough slack to engage breaks, triggering emergency.
      Looked more like a locomotive emergency and modes were switched until equipment could replace the failed unit, which would now be dead load.
      There was a pause in traction, followed by a surge, triggering the first bang as slack was lost and regained before slack was regained, then enough loss of traction to give a lower bang of traction loss and train rammed into itself and engine at a lower speed.
      A air hose burp wouldn't go anywhere near that, broken coupler would halt that part of the train, necessitate a jog down the train, jog back to replace a knuckle or subsidiary equipment that is user replaceable, then proceed onward.
      More sever, you're talking about more weight than two men could be reasonably expected to carry for any properly decent sized consist, which would immobilize the train for a lengthy period of time.

    • @SnowColdGarage
      @SnowColdGarage 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah if a knuckle broke then there would be too much tension on the air line hose and it would for sure break or snap meaning all pressure in the line would be lost resulting in (A the brakes be engaged due to the Loss in pressure but if you don't know that's just how train brakes work (the trains computer would have recognized the Lost pressure suddenly without the interference or input of a driver therefore putting it into emergency
      And since the rear half is just kind of on its own after all that broke it would just slam into the back of the other car in front of it because the front half would be an emergency breaking

    • @scottpurcell8833
      @scottpurcell8833 4 ปีที่แล้ว +94

      @@josephschnoor315 lets just say... they were not supposed to go over 15 mph and able to stop in the half of range of vision... they were up to 25mph at one point and when they realized that.. they went to dynamics and the sudden run in of cars while going into dynamics really hard cause it to shoot the air. if you notice, the conductor told the dispatcher that they never got much more than 10mph. also... at the end, they are going into the siding of palmer yard which is where the Trainmaster (aka boss man) is stationed. you can hear him calling them to stop at the office. When they went into emergency, the Erad told on them and the speed was seen, which wasn't a big deal because it doesn't say what signal you had, but when the dispatcher was called and asked what signal they had, he had to tell the TM that they had permission by the red signal which ment restricted speed. So needless to say... they got ran off for speeding and after the download, they would have seen that the times do not match up from when they started moving after the emergency application and when they talked to the dispacther. He was supposed to tell them if its ok to move or not. they moved without asking so now they have 2 major violations against them. also, you can not go over 10mph after an emergency application until your entire train has cleared that area. there are so many rules that are in place that its easy to miss something especially when you are in a panic like they were. they were trying to hide it and hope that nothing was looked at in depth.

    From what I can gather from the radio communication, they were expecting to get permission to pass a stop signal. When they didn't get permission, they hit the dynamic, which caused the all-at-once slack action (bangs). Or the dynamic was activated for them. The dispatcher was asking if it came back up afterward. Then he told them to "keep on movin' according to the rules."
    Maybe I'm misinterpreting this, but it makes sense.

    • @plunceford

      +Patrick Lunceford That may make perfect sense. When filming, I can't pay much attention to the chatter on the radio and in the hindsight I wasn't really sure about it (I'm not an expert, don't know the procedures and rules). Thanks for trying to figure it out!

      Standard Gauge Railroader the first bang was likely from the slack that caused the initial emergency; prolly got a knuckle with that. That second bang was simply the front half of the separated train stopped quicker than the rear therefore slamming into the front section. That's what I gathered from it

      +kevin butler Well, I don't know. I heard these bangs, then saw blue smoke in the distance about a mile away. I walked straight there (my car was on the other side of the train that blocked the crossing!), but when I arrived near the engines, the train started slowly moving again. Inspecting the outside of the engines when I met the train later again, I didn't see anything suspicious. Since I saw blue smoke initially after the bangs, it might have been burning lube oil that caused a blow (in the turbo charger?), but I didn't see any fire.

    No broken knuckle, no broken air, though the conductor does mention "dynamic" in radio conversation t around 8:50 mark. It sounds like dynamic braking kicked in, reset and released. First bang, dynamic engaged, second when dynamic released and slack taken back up.

      @jamespurks1694 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      kenmelrac What may have caused the smoke?

    • @kenmelrac
      @kenmelrac 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      First bang occurred when a locomotive dynamic brakes kicked in slowing the one locomotive but not the cars (slack in knuckles). Second bang occurred when dynamics released (see blended braking). Once the dynamic brakes released, the governor would dump fuel to speed the engine back up to the throttle setting, while the engineer was likely taking the throttle to idle. Smoke could possibly be excess fuel or even dust shaken loose from all the slack action.

    got to love when people say trains need a mile plus to stop yet within 4 seconds this train stopped. Other videos also show freight trains stopping nearly as fast!

    • @dennisb9157
      @dennisb9157 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Aaron is correct. A train traveling 60 mph is traveling at a mile per minute, which is clearing 88 feet per second. There is 5280 feet in a mile. So the train is clearing 5,280 feet in one minute. General braking applications will bring the train to a halt in about 2 miles traveling at 60 mph. Emergency braking reduces that distance by half, typically. When you factor in this train was empty, traveling maybe 40 mph at the most and the emergencies were engaged, it is no wonder this train slowed as quickly as it did.

    • @gtc1961
      @gtc1961 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't understand, you're saying people are lying when they trains take a long time to stop? Why on earth would anyone lie about that?

    • @dennisb9157
      @dennisb9157 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +gtc1961 I'm not saying that anybody is lying. all I'm saying is there are so many factors that have to be taken into consideration when the engineer applies the brakes.
      the speed the train is going, the kind of cargo being hauled, the weight of the Train, the makeup of the train and the number of locomotives at the head of the train and any helpers if any...all of these have to be factored in when a train brakes.
      the condition of the brake system throughout the entire train also has to be taken into consideration because if there's any faults in the braking system the train will take longer to stop regardless of how fast it is traveling.

    • @gtc1961
      @gtc1961 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dennis B
      well..of course...that's just common sense. A two car train will stop faster than a mile ling one.

    • @dennisb9157
      @dennisb9157 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +gtc1961 my comment was not only about the length of a train.
      When people say that a train takes a long time to brake, they are comparing it to a car or a truck. even a short train will take longer to stop than a truck or car.
      The last part of my comment was regarding the condition of the braking system on a train.
      when you look at a train and the train passes, you will commonly see a flashing red or yellow light on the back of the train. this is called a FRED (Flashing Rear-End Device). This is a brake valve that the engineer in the locomotive up front can use to apply break pressure from the back of the train via radio signal. the PSI reading of the brake pressure on the FRED and the PSI reading in the cab of the locomotive have to be very close. if the difference is too much, then the braking system of the train is flawed, and the cause of the fault has to be found and corrected/fixed before the train can get moving. if repair cannot be done on site then the affected car or cars have to be removed from the Train. once the train has been reconnected the engineer has to supply the brake system with pressure and get a new reading of the PSI. and the engineer will repeat the process as necessary to get the PSI pressure readings to differ by less than the mandated amount. only then can a train be safely moved.

    Very long coal trains come to where to the power station in my area. They are so long that they are often broken into segments to park the segments side by side and there are still really long trains stopped before the entry to the power station. But I have heard this is very normal. After all 70% of electricity is made with coal fired steam turbines turning enormous generators.

    Y'all Bonkers,
    And comments from the "Railroad Workers"???
    When the train is as you say in Emergency Stop, not even close!
    On the video timer at 6:19 you see a yellow sign with a red strip, that is to mark a "Maintenance of Way" (Train is entering a work zone).
    The first BANG you hear is the front engine running over a railroad flare, (meaning slow down and prepare to stop.) The second BANG you hear is the signal flare, to stop the train till the foreman of the zone gives the ok to pass the zone, (With lots of horn and plenty of bell) at the speed allowed by the foreman. That SMOKE is nothing more then chugging up the engines to have power to start when cleared.
    Long way from an EMG stop, brakes on the entire train lock, engines go into reverse, and a big cloud of sand shot on the track to help with friction and sliding along. Woooooo! Woooooo!
