    I miss the sound of train horns. I lived in a town that used to have a mainline run through it. I’d lye in bed and hear the trains in the distance. The first horn woke me up and the second or third would lull me back to sleep. It always reminds me of my dad who worked for the railroad as a block operator. Both are gone nearly 35 years now. First my dad, then the train line. I’m glad it wasn’t the other way around.

      Am sorry to hear about your father passing and I hope you only experience the good memories and not too much of the pain. Unfortunely It's gotten really hard to see anything at this location and no locomotives come here anymore AFAIK.

      I would love to one day visit the Lagrange StreetTrain. It's sound like a great place to visit and doesn't sound like you would be disappointed. The train in video doesn't even run any locomotives anymore as no operators wants the business of managing this line. No money in moving a few hoppers once a week is worth it to them.

    Great video! I find it funny how a train has to wait for vehicle traffic.....when thinking that trains have the right-of-way at ALL crossings.

    This is a former Conrail unit which had dual control stands back in the day for easier bi-directional operation on the Pennsylvania Reading Seashore Lines. Great video, I am glad 3840 is still running and not scrapped as the GP38 is my favorite 4 axle GP model.

    Fascinating. I live in Columbus, Ohio, and there are only few places left where trains have to roll through slowly as the weave through the backyards of some homes. There is a bit more space than we see in this video, as the tracks can be as far away as 30 to 50 feet from the actual structures. I love viewing the trains up closely when they make that run.

      In the early 60's one of my relatives back yard was at least 50ft. away form the old Pacific Electric railway Long Beach line& when I would come over I would sit on a ladder & watch those old red cars zip by at 50mph....

    That engine, 3840 was originally manufactured as a GP38, was upgraded to GP40-2 specifications by previous owner. These engines are work horses and as reliable as can be. A local CSX spur line here in Michigan uses a lot of GP 38's and GP 40's to haul local freight.

    In Santa Cruz, California there used to be a freight train that went through the street like this it was a short train that moved very very slowly. It moved concrete from the former Davenport Concrete plant.

    We had the Ferguson Ave. track in Hamilton as well as the Gage Ave.track both of which ran north-south through the city stopping all east-west traffic on main thoroughfares like Main St. And King. Also in Dundas a train ran all the way through the town, on Hart St. They were all just part of living here.

    Great catch ! Not much street running in Canada anymore. Roadbed looks a bit neglected because very few customers ( 1 ? ) on this line. Brantford is a great little town, Wayne Gretzky`s hometown .

      I've never met Wayne, but I have met his uncle once working at a store in London like 20 years ago. I thought that was pretty cool, because the family resemblance was very strong. I think his uncle named Al for some reason, but I don't fully remember. Thanks for comment!!

      Yes in this same town they have been ripping out most of they're abandon rails, but they're still remain big crossing signal on a few street. It's weird seeing crossing signals with no rails. :(

      TRAINS_4_FUN one time I went into the pstr yard and took one of the rail carts and rode it to talbot station and back it was fun at 5pm and I did that and I put it back and didn't get caught

      The extreme telephoto lens used in this video makes the the track and track conditions look much worse than if you saw it in person. It's not a high speed mainline, but it's a typical low traffic branchline.

      This is a low volume spur line now. It'll never be repair afaik. It'll probably eventually be fully abandoned probably in 5 years. I can't really see it lasting longer then that.

      Oh yeah. Video clips are part if the same line and same trai . I just followed the train since it doesn't move very fast through this area.

    In all my trips through Brantford over the years I have only once seen action on this spur.
    So this is a good catch !! well done ! I know this exact location have often thought that it would make a great spot for some footage.
    I had not come across your channel until recently. But I will definitely check back on your videos again.

      I've only seen twice in the the 4 times I've been to Brantford. It was determine that Wednesday was the best day for the time to go and see the street train when SOR was still there. While I think lots of people are interested in the Burford, they are not willing to put in the time to see it.
      I've was lucky to come across at least one Burford Spur railfan who lives in Brantford who has help me track movements on the Burford. However I am not sure anybody knows anything anymore outside of the people who work at Ingenia.

    Don't even think about suing the railroad about putting crossing gates in. They tried here, the railroad took the crossings out. Now you have to go 5 miles either direction to cross the tracks.

    I am 3 years late adding a comment, but I grew up in Brantford and I always remember the tracks being there . A commenter wanted to know where you filmed the stop light crossing. It was Darling & Colborne Sts. about 1/2 mile from market square. All tracks ran through older or poorer neighborhoods back in the day, that is why the track area looked run down. Brantford is an industrial city and like so many others in Canada & the US, industry has moved offshore. I hope it can return. Look for Brantford, Ontario on Google maps and you will see the track.

      It's cool that you got to see the otherside when there was still tracks where the Johnson Trail is now.
      I also did a quick look at the Old TH&B station still standing at the Burfor sub 0.28miles. It was interesting to see a couple crossing lights still remained. I wonder how much time the crossing have left before they decide to remove the rest of it.

    I vaguely recall street running TH&B track in Hamilton though as far as I know it's long gone.
    Did it exist and if so, where?
    I faintly recall seeing it as a little girl in the early 1970s but can't recall where. I know I would have loved to see daddy driving alongside a train but of course he never did.

      Hi Dakota. Like you I was too young at the time, but street running trains were certainly around. I know of at least of one rail photograph who had taken many picture of the Street Running trains all around Oshawa, Hamilton and perhaps a few other place during the 70's and 80's. I don't know if it's possible to look his photography online, but if you google John Vincent Railroad Photography you might be able to pull up a few photographs.

    Here in the UK even the location of the line let alone running trains would be banned by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and probably a hundred other government agencies, for being in breach of another hundred public and operator safety issues. The way it's all so casually carried out makes for a fascinating video!

      Indeed the tracks are in bad shape, but these maybe gone in the next 5 to 10 years as it is used to service only one reminding customer ingenia polymers on the line.
      The tracks were sold off by Canadian National Railway to the Ingenia polymers. So it's interesting to see how long they will continue to used the tracks for.
      I think when the tracks are no longer usable. Ingenia polymers will sell off the property and switch to trucking for it delivery. That is just my opinion.

    BTW- Do you know where that loco came from? That paint scheme looks like the CORD RR I saw in northern Cal. back around 2003. (Central Oregon or something it stands for)?

      I'm not certain if this is the corrected answer and I don't know the specific history of this locomotive.
      However I think this may have been own by New England Central Railway at one time because the initials on the side of the locomotive are NECR which representative of that railway.
      Other people have commented and sugguested that this locomotive has a uncanny color scheme of a locomotive from providence & worcester railroad (P&W).
      The only thing I am certain of is at the time of this video. This locomotive was under ownership by Southern Ontario Railway(SOR) which is a daughter company of the Genesee and Wyoming (G&W).
      Interesting enough all three companies are own or purchased by the G&W Railway.
      My theory is this locomotive started close to what was the P&W Railway locomotive that was purchase by the NECR, but then G&W bought them it was eventually transer over to the SOR.
      There maybe a place I haven't found yet that would have to complete history of this locomotive, but this is what I've been able to come up with so far.

      @@Trains4Fun I checked on youtube for the CORP railroad. (Central Oregon And Pacific, not cord like I was thinking yesterday) "It is" the same paint scheme. I video taped them also when I was last out there, in Northern Cal. in the late 90's. Wonder if anyone knows if this loco came from there or not?? Also, the up to date videos show the G&W orange and yellow scheme on most their engines now. Looks like they may have been bought out possibly?? or taken over management wise?? They are up around Weed, & Yreka Cal. and I think they go up into Eugene, Oregon. Was up there back back then and taped those areas operations. That whole area is Southern Pacific's former Siskiyou line.

      Great Question. The track switch used to lead into some other industrial area, but the rail has largely been remove from what you can see at start of video is all that remains intact.

      @@valtrus901 Yeah it's kinda weird zoom effect of the camera and point view that makes tracks seem to dip and disappear, but in reality the track is removed just after the switch. The track speed I think is restricted to 10mph and video shows they are a bit rough in some places. Thanks for the comment!👍

    I haven’t seen it on this channel yet but in Alaska there is a really long tunnel (takes about 10 min to go through) that is one lane wide. You have to wait until traffic moves in the proper direction to go through and sometimes you have to share it with a train.

    In the small North Island town of Kawakawa in New Zealand is the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway. Whilst it is not a mainline operation anymore there is a preserved railway there that operates through the middle of the main street. It is a wonderful place.

    nice video ! I'm from Kitchener and I miss the train running down Caroline St on a beer and booze run for Labatts and Seagrams ... that is some quality track ... frost heave at it's finest ! Is that engine from the GEXR out of Kitchener ? seems to be the same paint scheme !

      Yes they both sister shortline operators with the same parent company Geneese and Wyoming (G&W) on a few occassions have exhange locomotives with each other an to other sister companies. Thanks for the comment.

    Great video! I have to admit I was wondering what a New England Central unit was doing on a Southern Ontario Railway train, but then I realized both railroads are owned by Genessee & Wyoming. Why wasn't the 3840 already in G&W orange?

      Joe Good question. I just assume they just haven't gotten around to it, but I know there was another necr 3821 that got repainted Orange and Black and renumbered GEXR 2073. GEXR like SOR is another sister company of the G&W.

      Here in Connecticut the G&W has gobbled up all the freight carriers except for Pan Am, the Central New England Railroad (CNZR) and CSX's small operation out of Cedar Hill Yard in North Haven. It's hard to believe how much things have changed over the last ten years.

      I think the G&W is the mother of most of shortline operations in North America. I don't know too much about places outside Ontario, but they are at least few shortline operators in Ontario independent of the G&W and I love them all.

      I think the thing that bothers most railfans when the G&W acquires a railroad is how much character it loses (in addition to operational change s etc). Here in the states, the Providence & Worcester and the New England Central are two good examples. Look up their paint schemes prior to G&W's acquisition.

      While I don't hate the orange and black. I agree to a certain extent to what you are saying. I don't wish to see all the units painted in the same manner, but if they slap one of their decals on the head and side of the locomotive. It wouldn't bother me as much. At least some of the colour scheme would survive. I have to admit that if a operator goes bankrupt. It's nice to see the lines are not abandon an eventually pull. I suppose they're worse alternatives.

      Unfortunely Brantford seems to have had better economic times, but what the video doesn't show is that they are activately in the process of improving the look of the area. It just hasn't gotten around to this place yet.

      I did finally. I was trying to get something in Cambridge on the way back, but they're was nothing left by lunch time. My work was very slow that week and I actually had a couple of days off.
      I wanted to come back the next day and check out Cambridge, but than my kids all got sick afterwards and I had to take them to the walkin clinic.
      However I wish I could have gone, because I'm amazed by all the cool units you caught there recently. But next time I have some time off I'm gonna make sure I come back to Cambridge.

      The news only reported that somebody was hit on Clarence and Colbourne st. The person was sent to hospital with serious injuries. I'm assuming person must have recovered since I have not seen another article like pedestrian succumbs injury after being struck by a train.

      Sorry I am not sure the status of the Burford spur. The last I heard they were using a track mobile device now to move hoppers from Ingenia to and from the bridge area. I think it's still a once a week operation, but moves are made in the middle of the night. I can neither confirm or deny if this is the case.

      Indeed. These track will likely degrade further. As there is no railroad that maintains or service these tracks now. The tracks are own by the last remaining company on the line. I've been told they are only using a trackmobile to switch freight now. This is not enough power, but hopefully the company will hopefully acquire a bigger locomitive sometime in the future.       Well disused trackage tends to get less maintence then mainline stuff, especailly since some localities probably dont like trains street running and disrupting traffic and blaring their horns into people houses and offices XD

      @@terryisaac8195 Depends, some places the rail was there first, known as "railroad towns" but other places the railroad had to build its way into the city. We had some street running rail here in Oshawa but they're long gone now, the last reminder is a stretch of black pavement along the center of Bruce St Oshawa, Ontario where there use to be rails that connected the CP yard in Oshawa to the now demolished GM North/ACYS plant. Today its just a costco with other stores like "The Beer Store"

      Yes at the time of this video. This company called Southern Ontario Railway leased both lines from CN. This video is based on Burford spur(ex-CN) and connects to the CN Dundas subdivision. The line above is called CN Hagersville Subdivision which also connects to the CN Dundas Subdivision to the left. If you look carefully enough in the background of the bridge scene, you can see the signal lights really far in the background is the CN Dundas Subdivision. The CN Dundas Subdivision climbs a rather steep grade to meet the Hagersville sub to the left. The Burford Spur meets the Dundas Subdivision kinda far back and to the right. The Dundas Subdivision is extremely active mainline in Ontario. The Hagersville Subdivision is only little more Active then the Burford Spur. I've seen pictures of trains above and below the bridge, but I think they may have photoshopped together.
      I just want make a correction. Southern Ontario railway(SOR) leased the CN Hagersville sub, but SOR only had a service contract on the Burford spur with Ingenia Polymer. Ingenia had purchased the Burford spur from CN, but I don't recall the date.

      This is why you see the man walking the train acrossed the road. He is the flag man and this is how many railways ran in the early days of railroading.

    Tha,t was my black car car turning right on Coulbourn St. before the train went through. There before it finished going through down toward the market. My Gran. Used to live across from the train station on usher st . in Brantford and watching the trains there makes me think 🤔 of her always ! ✨💕✨

    I've seen several clips from the USA with some trakc in a similar poor condition still being used ... I'm totally not used to that in Germany, even trakc which are closed down for a decade aren't in such a poor shape (well, bushes and trees growing, but not the track itself being like in the clip)

      The mainline tracks are in better shape for sure. These are remnants of very old tracks and will get probably won't be around very much longer as they are not used very much.

      DennyDreadBassMan From when I passed the train by car and to where the train enters the street portion was about 5 city blocks or about a mile. Really this train was moving very slowly so you could probably walk beside it for awhile and would not really pass you the entire way.

      Building a scale model railroad is a fairy-tale no matter how well it is done and it is not comparable to an actual railroad and the close residential environs. Just sayin'.

    Your loco drivers are very polite. In NSW (Australia), drivers would rightly refuse to take a train over such disgustingly poor tracks. As for unmarked level crossings, what few there are, the loco driver would assume right of way on the presumption that he can cause more damage.

      The street trains were far more common back 40 years ago. As far as I know this is probably the last example in Canada. However in the USA they maybe at least 6 or more. They extremely uncommon. Thanks for comment and watching

    In the Chicago region we got lots of abandoned railroads and the buses and trucks have to stop for me anyway even though they’re very abandoned and looks like nobody riding it on them

      Yes it goes to a plastic plant at the end of the line. This is the only reason this line still exists is because this company Ingenia purchase the tracks from the railway. It's truly the only reason it's still here.

    I watched a friend of mine's father (Hugh Henry Money) walk to that box several times when I was stuck at those traffic lights. He worked as a yardman (Brakeman??) with CN for thirty years. Wow!

    I love how American railways run down the street and behind houses like that. I've got an 1890 map of my nearest town and the station and marshalling yards are a mile outside, along with the police station. Probably from the time when the police were more interested in railway crime than town crime, the line was laid down in the 1840's. I'm guessing it was when the big landowners here held sway and wouldn't sell land to the railway companies. There's a big house near me now, and the old, now defunct line went through a tunnel 300ft long and several deep cuttings, two large brick bridges and a high embankment jst so it wouldn't be visible from the mansion. This line was from 1856-60. The valley past the house has a uniform gradient and minimal levelling for a railway but they owners would have seen the trains a couple of times a day, so they obviously insisted on all that extra engineering work to preserve their views.
    It's all gone now, the station building is offices and the yards all built on, the tunnels and line are overgrown and crumbling.

      @@Trains4Fun Yes, the South East of England, loads of railway history here. The old bridges are amazing, fantastic brickwork just to carry a single line rail over a farm track. You can see on most old maps where the big houses and parks are and how far the stations are from the properties. There's a town called Petworth not too far away and the rail station was three miles outside. The old town was mostly owned by the family who owned the big house and all the estate lands and they obviously didn't want anything so vulgar as a railway disturbing their views in 1845-1850.
      It's difficult to imagine the power these old families held. they were often shareholders in the early railways and had the say on where the lines ran.
      In the towns the companies just bulldozed whole streets for their lines but the railway was definitely kept separate from the town life. I rather think a lot of the rails ran over open country originally and the housing around the lines was built subsequently. To see an unprotected engine on a street like is great.
      There is some talk of reopening some of the old lines again, to ease congestion on the roads, that will be nice if it ever comes off.

      gary wise I’ve got it! I asked on another video on CSX, the exact same question, apparently there are approach signals where that’s the only indication they can only ever display. End of signaled territory may be at next signal, could be a mandatory stop. I know in our area, we have a fixed approach, as the short line feeds into the class 1, and always has to stop and wait for a considerable bit. Unsure of this exact reason for this signal, but it must be a fixed approach.

      The tracks you see in this video are still here, but there was 2 crossing and some track remove around the time of this video just south of the street portion in this video.

      I don't think it's a requirement in Canada and largely dependent on who is responsible for the tracks. Like near me a company call Metrolinx owns the Right of Way and have started fencing off tracks. Before that they were own by a major freight company (CN). They were never fenced in anywhere nearby. Prehaps someone more knowledge will be able to clarify if indeed that is the case. Thanks for the comment.

      It's actually Brantford Ontario in Canada. It had NECR markings. Which i think it was a New England Central Railway Locomotive. I believe it was bought up by G & W who also owns a number of other shortline railway operations in north America and the world. This is about all i know about the locomotive.

      These trackage are not well maintain and are slow for safety reason. We have many laws in place to protect the public and the environment.
