We have one next to Gatwick airport, and it’s very busy at times. There’s an unmanned Amazon shop. I use it on the way out to work to charge whilst I have breakfast and yes, work on my laptop. Interesting point about the attendants because in the first week I had my EV, I had issues charging and went through the inevitable “OMG why did I choose an EV?” stage. Those guys helped me diagnose a fault with my OEM charge cable and massively boosted my confidence.

I really like what Gridserve are doing and charging with the app is very straightforward.
But the prices are too high. I can charge for half the price as a Tesla subscriber, so I only use Gridserve in extremis.
For £8-10 per month and, say, £0.55 per kwH I might consider it.

Agreed, these prices are far too much and should be avoided except in an emergency. I understand that they have a huge initial outlay to build these places but don't rip people off when they use them. If other companies are making profit from lower prices then I'm sure they could too in the long term.

let's not forget that the government takes 20% of the £0.79 so £0.158 per kwh. Which is a huge draw back to charging away from home. You can get a basic Ionity subscription for £5.49 a month, and you get 53p per kWh or the full passport for £10.50 and that reduces it to 43p. So at peak times cheaper than tesla, but off-peak tesla open to all are the cheapest at some sites, but not all.

Full-service charging parks look more like the PAST of EV-charging than the future to me: people needed a bunch of things to kill time when charging took 30+ minutes. Not so much with near-future EVs (or the fastest-charging current EVs) able to charge most of the way at 200+kW, not leaving you time to walk away from your vehicle for much longer than a bathroom break before you have to run back to unplug.

£45 will probably get you around 200miles at these chargers. I suspect that most people only use them occasionally when on longer journeys which when averaged out with the much cheaper home charging still makes EV cheaper to run. If you had to charge at these rates all the time EV would be much more expensive.
Places like that aren't cheap to build and operate so no doubt a good chunk of that price you pay will be going towards the capex and opex costs. It would be interesting to see how much profit they actually make.

Beautiful as the forecourts are I don't see how they are going to be sustainable. You will never get the throughput for the stores to be sustainable. A few people an hour will not sustain them others like the Norwich one have been really struggling and closing all the shops now.
They well need 100 spaces to charge (and regularly 50% full) for it be practical for the shops there.
The site was over half full for cars but only 1 or 2 people inside. All those seats upstairs. It is just dead space.
It was 50 forecourts by 2026 if I remember. They have just 4 now.
They could have a much smaller shop footprint. Think BK Lounge size. A coffee place and toilets is more than enough really.

    • @simplygregsterev
      @simplygregsterev  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

So this is what my wife was saying that is just so over the top like who’s going to go there and do actually any work while having a nice store or café and washrooms is key I feel it could be half the size and still accomplished at the same mission. I mentioned that in the film as well that they had planned to open what 50 or 100 by the end of the decade and they’re only up to 5 or six now it takes a lot of money and investment just not in building the charging site, but actually building the building as well and making it self funding. Good property off of motorways is also quite expensive. I visited the site in Braintree in May 192023 and I think I still prefer that one more. I was also told that grid service is getting away from vehicle leasing and test drives and handing it over to the manufacturers.
If you make it half the size with double the amount of charging all it really is at the end of the day is a really fancy motorway services and quite a few of those already exist so maybe focus on having better charging infrastructure at existing motorway services with a couple of these flagship forecourts sprinkled in
In my next film, it will be our road trip adventure in the UK, including the meltdown at Tebay services northbound !

@@simplygregsterev Yeah I started writing it and then I heard you wife say it was over the top, which it is.
It is their 4th one. Braintree opening in 2020. Norwich and Gatwick. And now this one.
I had to check and it was in December 2020 in the press release on their website for the opening of the Braintree one "The site is the first of over 100 Electric Forecourts® being built by GRIDSERVE over the next five years" They are way off. They might have 2 or 3 more by then.
Only Stevenage and Gatwick are in decent locations that will get much throughput (on major travel routes) tbh.
They have focused on getting in chargers at existing motorway services which makes much more sense.
Gridserve (and many others like instavolt, etc) are too expensive. Tesla led the way over here on price (Ionity with max memberships similar price) others are about double. Once they open up even more (currently 851 of 1668 stalls) they will be a real threat to many CPOs here.
It is a decent saving and with these savings you could have a nice coffee and a sandwich in a good hotel or something where they have chargers.
