I'm assuming I don't actually need to add my vehicle (MG ZS EV), after all. As far as I can tell from the help section on the app, now that I've created an account, and already added a payment method, I should be able to just plug in and charge via the app.
Yes Tony. The point of the video is that EV drivers should be able to drive in and charge at public chargers, not have to pre-order RFID or pre-register with an app.
Just a heads up for none Tesla owners the iPhone app (although the app is the same version number as shown in the video) it doesn’t show ‘Charge Your Other EV’ as mentioned in this video sadly 😢 Otherwise another great video..
If you're a non Tesla owner the App' defaults to 'charge other EV', and only displays chargers open to all. I have no option to charge my MG4 at home so opted for Tesla annual membership @ £90, which gives me access to local chargers currently 39p/kWh (was 34p in July), and peace of mind for longer distances. Larkhall is a hidden gem for me if travelling South.
My MG4 has passenger side rear chargers port but it still possible to charge without blocking a bay. I tend to pick chargers at the end of the row and park closer to the side of the bay nearest to chargers cable.
Just downloaded the Tesla App, typed in my details, card etc. BUT nowhere does it show "Charge your other EV". Can anybody help? Tesla support not answering my query. Thanks in advance.
This appears to be a very helpful video - thank you very much. It appears to answer a question that I have asked elsewhere and so far not received a clear answer. I am due to go soon to Cornwall and intend to charge at Exeter, (probably at the Tesla Service Centre) both on the way there and on the way back. I have an MG4 which should get on OK with the Tesla Supercharger, but I don't have a smartphone, so therefore no app. As a result I want to roll up and simply use a credit card. From what you say, this is straightforward, so cross fingers and hope that it really is as simple as that. All I can do is try it. If it doesn't work I will have to resort to the Gridserve chargers at the Exeter Services. When I return I will post a response to this message saying how I got on. Once again, thank you for this clear explanation.
Didn't work! Despite the very helpful assistance of a member of staff, neither he nor I could get the charger to work. We tried 3 different chargers, all appeared to accept my credit card, but the car consistently said "Not connected" and the charger posts eventually switched to "no connection". We think the fault was in the chargers, especially as when I moved to the Gridserve chargers nearby everything worked first time!
Hi Dave I was wondering if you could find out some information about the Tesla charging site at White City old Trafford! It’s been going on for over a year now with still no sign of it opening soon😢
Wasn’t aware there were any there, however at the Tesla showroom in Beswick (by the Emptihad) they’ve been there since opening and still not online. They hope early 2025 (?)
I'm trying to add my Non Tesla to my Powerwall App but it wont let me add my address here in the UK even thought it knows who i am and my address. It keeps asking for my Zip Code , i have pressed im in th Uk .
I've read you can try "Start" the car or "Drive" mode, will automatically stop the charge. Obviously it will not actually start/drive with the cable plugged in. It just interrupts the session, allowing you to remove the plug.
I was actually at Rugby services yesterday and the app didn’t show it. Yet today after checking the website it shows it is open and it’s also there in the app. Weird. I pay for IONITY membership but at Peterborough services DPD send their vans round every night at rush hour and they charge all of their vans to 100%. I have photos of it every day but IONITY will not get involved. It looks like there is a Tesla charger in Cambridge so I might cancel my membership and use Tesla instead. Shame there’s no other on my 260 mile a day commute as I tend to charge twice a day as I don’t have a charger at my house.
@@oliver90owner yes mate that’s what I spotted. It’s the wrong side of Cambridge, I work near the airport but may still be quicker than waiting for the DPD idiots.
Why does the Honda e:NY1 have problems when using a Tesla supercharger. The dash lights up like Blackpool, you can’t use dc charging and the Honda dealer has to reset the car.
Thank you Dave for another excellent video. Over the last year I have ‘learned the hard way’ most of the things you covered. I was at Gretna (retail park) about the same time as the “problem” case you covered. At the time I did not know about the slider to set the % charge. Arrived with 65%, and wanted to go just over 90% (my BMW i3 has a linear charge rate up to that point). The slider appeared to have defaulted to 80%, so we had just left the first shop when I was called back to un plug! In busy locations, does the charger automatically do this to all cars? P.S. your presentation was well structured and professional. Thank you.
Thanks Geoff for your support. Yes, all Tesla superchargers will reset your SOC limit to 80% at busy times (at least they do with Teslas), whenever the supercharger is already at or near to struggling to cope. It can be easily over-ridden on your EV or app up to 100% if you choose, but be aware that the last 20% takes absolutely ages. I regularly film charger screens showing charging speeds of 1, 2 or 5kW at 95% SOC. Yes single digit charging speed. If the supercharger is struggling do you really need to or want to block that bay for an additional 10, 20 or 30 minutes?
I have a Tessie but needed to charge an ID3 used the app and stopped the charge in the app and also in the car but it did not release the cable I then had to press the key fob twice in succession to release the cable but otherwise a seamless operation
Looking at the Tesla App is all well and good but when you arrive at a Service station it's one extra thing to do. Why don't Tesla just stick a big label on the Open To All chargers, a big green thumbs up with OTA written underneath would do.
if i was charging my tesla at a site that allows non tesla vehicles, if someone is struggling could i use my app in the charge other vehicle to help them out? if the answer is yes i wouldn’t be charged for charges on the vehicle at a later date - so it would be a one off charge.
yes, Mike, each charging session relates to a specific supercharger location, post number and session. Your details will not be stored for future use at a different or even the same supercharger. With instant smartphone ability to transfer money to friends and family, it is something I have come close to doing several times for strangers, but always so far got them charging so not needed yet. It probably will one day.
We live in Somerset and drive regularly to Slough in our M3. We don’t have Tesla chargers eastbound on the M4. There are Chargers at Membury services but although they have been there for some time, they have never been commissioned and are surrounded by temporary fencing. What’s going on? Plenty of options westbound but eastbound is a problem. Love your channel. Been a subscriber for years. Thanks Dave.
Charged at the Cardiff Tesla garage today (I’m a non Tesla owner) and an employee seemed to indicate they were going to remove access for everyone shortly….have you heard anything about this?
Charged my EV6 at the Tesla chargers in Milton Keynes for the first time a few weeks ago, no problems, I have the Tesla app because of my Powerwalls so just had to add a credit card, the cable was long enough so I just used one bay and there was a waiting room with coffee and biscuits. My only issue was the chargers were not as fast as the Ionity one I usually use. (The EV6 can charge at up to 230 kWh) and I could only get 98 kWh out of the charger, but it was cheaper than other Rapid chargers and only added a few minutes to the charging time.
hi Chris, I launched a video recently about why your 800v architecture will only ever allow between 50kW and 100kW at any supercharger. It's a pre-set limit that will not change until Tesla Superchargers upgrade from 400v to 800v which is not in the plans in the near future. Balance the massive cost savings against the increased time spent charging. Your choice.
@@davetakesiton Thanks for that ,good to know, usually cost is more important than time as we are retired so it's just understanding what to expect. I have used 2 more Superchargers and both delivered 98 kWh but were significantly cheaper.
Non Tesla EVs with port on the rear right should if possible use the right most dispenser (viewing at the row from the front) if possible to avoid blocking any. I do this all the time with my e-Golf.
Anyone with a glimmer of thoughtfulness would do that or only block up half of the stall next to where they need to charge, by parking as far across as possible. It may block two stalls, but might leave access for another thoughtful non-Tesla to use that un-used half and the adjacent stall. This might, on occasions, mean two cars using three stalls instead of the two cars using 4 stalls - but I very much doubt many would think of that possibility.☹️
While I have a Tesla account as I have a Powerwall, I have added a payment method. As you stated they don’t list if the charger is a V4. I drive an IONIQ 5 with the charge port on the right. As such I have not charged at a Supercharger. Could it be Tesla do not want to list V4 in the app as drivers like me will avoid them? Leaving more spare for Tesla drivers. Maybe one day I’ll need to use a Supercharger.
Only issue is they charge much slower for non Tesla. I've never had more than 95kw out of the 350kw charger on a Kia EV6 which should be capable of up to 350kw.
It will be great when they open some up in Lincolnshire. The East of the country (except south-east) seems to be not a place that Tesla are looking to open their chargers up.
@@oliver90owner I think over 32% of chargers are in London, and an even larger % on its nearby proximity. Both reliability and availability, and speed (capability) remains a postcode lottery.

The Havant Tesla Supercharger costs up to 90p per kWh so not worth considering. Maybe that’s going back to being Tesla only like the similarly priced Tottenham one
Not sure if I’ve been giving the wrong info at Tesla Cardiff.. come November 1st only Tesla only can use the chargers due to uk regulations, Tesla havnt chip and pin on any chargers so they are going to change them all 🤷🏼♂️
The regs start 24th November. (one year after the bill was passed). A little unclear if all Tesla chargers open already will need to be changed, the wording is a little ambiguous (if all chargers have to be changed by that date or 1 year from when they put online for others, etc) although it does sound like all existing 50kW+ chargers will need to change to the payment terminals and other regs. We will know more in a month or so.
You made me famous, thanks. But dont let my wife see that ive been wrong, she is adamant that im never wrong. 😂 Edit, just checkex in both zap map and the tesla app both the sevice center, snd the SC in exeter are open to non teslas. I think we got our wire crossed a bit.
I thought you might be going to deal with the issue that, apparently, all the V2 and V3 stations that are currently open to all cars will revert to Tesla-only on 24th November because of government legislation prohibiting providers from offering charging to the general public on a charger that won't accept contactless payment. This is going to upset a lot of people, especially in the northern two-thirds of Scotland.
@@davetakesiton Well, you got my hopes up, but everyone else on the planet seems to think that Tesla is going to have to close all it's V2 and V3 superchargers in Britain to non-Teslas after 24th November. I'd be happy to learn that's not the case, but sadly it's not looking good.
@@davetakesiton Very disappointed in this response, and indeed in the video as a whole in consequence. Non-Tesla supercharging on V2 and V3 units is about to become a thing of the past in just three weeks. And yet you made this video and didn't even mention it.
Non-tesla supercharging SURE IS a gamechanger.....for Tesla owners....what im experiencing now is unusable vacant bays that cant be used because a non-tesla owner is blocking 2 bays due to their charge port being on the opposite side. I had to use the osprey chargers at Banbury on my way home from EE show...so the no -tesla bay blocker was enjoying a cheaper kW rate whilst I, a Tesla owner had to pay almost double the price. Tesla have lost their USP anx will lose owner loyalty if this shenanigans continues.
I have seen other videos.Where Tesla supercharger stations, head non.Tesla charging removed due to these kind of difficulties. I guess this is the price of success.
Non-Tesla chargers don't change any game. They aren't available in enough places to be useful, and the marginal price difference doesn't justify any significant route diversion to use one. If you don't subscribe to Tesla then they are about 51p per kWh outside of peak times (~39p with a subscription); other similarly fast networks on Electroverse can match 51p or compete at 60p / 63p. Plus there is the uselessness of Tesla V3 cables for many drivers to contend with. The V4 chargers are good but thin on the ground. If this changes the game might too - but until then home charging is mandatory for EV ownership with not much more than 20% of charging at public rapids in order to be cost effective compared to a decent ICE car.
Im lucky, I have an ICE car & can go to any petrol station & they fill any ICE car , no internet required. Also if you have no internet available you cant use the app I guess
Speaking from experience don't charge your Honda e:ny1 on a tesla supercharger as it may go into fault mode and needs taking to a main dealer to reset. I have email's from Honda uk stating the honda isnt compatible with tesla chargers.
I tried to charge my non Tesla on an 'Open to all' Tesla charger. It wouldn't charge. These Tesla chargers don't charge 'all' EVs. They charge 'most' EVs. Where other charger manufacturers are perfectly capable of making chargers that DO support my car, Tesla somehow is NOT capable. Go on, blame it on my car for being slightly different. It still doesn't change the fact that OTHER manufacturers CAN support my car perfectly happily while Elon can't.
There is nothing I look forward to more than waiting in my Tesla to charge at a stall currently being used by a Range Rover PHEV topping up his 50mile range battery
Please explain why. Surely it should not take long? But are you suggesting that many (not all) RR drivers might belong to the less-thoughtful group of users?
@@ISuperTed No, a genuine question. Are you a RR PHEV driver, by any chance? I drive an Ioniq I-5. That would take longer? I haven’t often used public chargers (4 or 5 times in 19 months), but would either try to use an end stall or park as far across as possible, if using a V3, so as not to (perhaps) fully block 2 stalls.
Why the totally annoying and unnecessary prefix "super"? Fortunately here in the UK we have providers that reach the places that cherry picking Tesla does not reach and far more choice than in the US. The only way that Tesla can provide cheaper charging is through cross subsidies from car sales. Increased competition will force an end to that.
The one near near me, Tottenham, they have stopped non Tesla drivers using it now. Good move IMO as many times would go there and it's full of non teslas hogging it up lol

I just tell people that Tesla chargers won't work. Keep the the Superchargers free, for Teala's. You will regret telling people that they can use Superchargers this when you're waiting for others to charge, taking up two bays, or having to use a 85p charger.
I don't suppose they opened up chargers to all out of the goodness of Musks heart, he holds 20% of Tesla, a company that has struggled to make a profit, so much so that he has sacked all the Super Charger team (May 2024). Tesla charging prices have gone up recently, still slightly less than most rapids.
I downloaded and registered on the Tesla app, but there is no section that says "charge your other EV" as you show 🤷🏻
I'm assuming I don't actually need to add my vehicle (MG ZS EV), after all.
@@davetakesiton Thanks 🙏🏻
Just a heads up for none Tesla owners the iPhone app (although the app is the same version number as shown in the video) it doesn’t show ‘Charge Your Other EV’ as mentioned in this video sadly 😢
Otherwise another great video..
It's the same with Android it seems. I have no 'Charge your other EV' option.

It doesn’t need that option as if you have added your car to the app it will automatically only show chargers that are also for non teslas

I've read you can try "Start" the car or "Drive" mode, will automatically stop the charge. Obviously it will not actually start/drive with the cable plugged in. It just interrupts the session, allowing you to remove the plug.
I’ve tried to use them but they never show up on the Tesla app.

I seek Tesla chargers above all else when doing a longer distance.

Dave what happened to the great sainsburys ev charging roll out and industry takeover? Has it stalled?
It’s EV game that will change . None of these in twenty years !
No Frankie, the law and regulations say open to all means exactly that. All or nothing.
Charging desert in general
Obviously not in Lincolnshire, but Trumpington at Cambridge is in the East of England and open to all.
I reckon I would class Cambridge as the northern part of south east! Certainly the bottom third of England!

Edit, just checkex in both zap map and the tesla app both the sevice center, snd the SC in exeter are open to non teslas.

Not happening. Tesla got a legal waiver.
@@davetakesiton Really? That's very good news indeed! Care to elaborate?
Also if you have no internet available you cant use the
app I guess
Speaking from experience don't charge your Honda e:ny1 on a tesla supercharger as it may go into fault mode and needs taking to a main dealer to reset. I have email's from Honda uk stating the honda isnt compatible with tesla chargers.
Instead of “anyone” it should be “no one.” Silly. But not funny 😮
It just boils down to cost and if the others drop their price people wouldn't have to go to all this Dave.
But the others haven't dropped their prices and it doesn't seem that they will anytime soon. Only way to get them to budge is boycott their network.
Not a game changer on the east side of the UK (A1-M1) Nothing from Berwick to Mansfield
Of course the whole thing is location dependent.
The only game in town !
@@oliver90ownerSarcasm
@@ISuperTed No, a genuine question. Are you a RR PHEV driver, by any chance? I drive an Ioniq I-5. That would take longer?
I haven’t often used public chargers (4 or 5 times in 19 months), but would either try to use an end stall or park as far across as possible, if using a V3, so as not to (perhaps) fully block 2 stalls.
Does the Rager take 4 hours to top up? How many times does it break down while charging?😂
No harm in charging at these, but some are taking up 4 spaces by parking across the bays.
I mean use your common sense and think of others.
