  • What happens to a mob wife after her husband gets whacked? Angie has her own little back story. She wasn't the most popular character in this series, but I always found her interesting. The song playing at the beginning is "Time to Say Goodbye --Andrea Bocelli"

Carmela hates the fact that Angie has done well for herself, off her own back, not just living off her husband's money. And she hates the fact that Angie has grown so in confidence she no longer just sits and defers to her. The change in status and power dynamics is fascinating. It's yet another element that shows just how hollow Carmela is.

Angie's development was so awesome to see. A widowed single mob wife doing it for herself! Holding her own. Seeing Carmela act all pompous and aloof showing off her new car, then to be shocked at Angie's car that she bought on her own was priceless! It ranks right up there with Artie's wife revealing her fling with Tony while they were separated.

When my wife and I started dating, I told her I didn’t want a “do-nothing” housewife who just stays home and takes care of the house.
I pushed her to get certifications and work experience so she can make her own money.
I pushed her to have her own hobbies and interests so she can learn from those experiences while also enjoying them.
We’re at a place where she has her own money and I can rely on her independence to keep her focused and enjoying life.
A lot of guys, even fans of The Sopranos, want a Carmela who will stay home, be pretty and take of the house/kids.

Angie was the living embodiment of what Carmella thought of “what could happen” being married into the life. Being married to a mobster, everyday you have to wonder “what if they don’t come home, what will I do? Could I support myself?” That’s exactly what happened with Angie. Carmella started off afraid and feeling pity for Angie, but eventually envious because she was able to show that she could support herself and more. Something that Carmella wasn’t sure she could do. Especially with the fact that Carmella thought she was hot shit because she was married to the boss. But that’s all she was, the wife of the boss.

Carmela was stuck in a toxic cycle that was part her fault and part Tony's, and the problem was that she was smart enough to realize it in both cases. Ppl get on her case for being hypocritical but forget that most of the 1st seasons she was living in constant guilt over whether she was enabling Tony's evil. The point where she really shut up and started (likely pretending) to accept being the good mob wife was when that blunt therapist Melfi referred her to gave her that talking down to and told her to leave. She did the opposite instead, until Furio became the greatest in a long line of men she could picture "rescuing" her from the life she felt trapped in and she finally snapped at Tony cheating, along with a lot of the other toxicity in their relationship. Angie's and Rosalie's situations were happening simultaneously while she went thru all this and you could tell she was internalizing what she saw from them and let it feed her insecurity that she was powerless and disposable

Look at Gene Gotti, he's getting out in 2015 for dealing heroin, he's been the pen for over 40 years, for those heroin charges. Vito Genovese was put in a prison and died there over a drug case. Drug charges carry serious penalties when it comes to dealing quantities of cocaine, pills and heroin. It's even worse for mob guys because the feds are looking to pin anything on them anyway. Pussy would've went away, they caught him red handed making a large heroin deal, he had no out, he had no other alternative but to take his sentence standing, not saying nothing and watching his family suffer because of it, or turn informant. Carmella liked the IDEA of being independent. She had a lot of regrets in how her life turned out. But the reality is that Carmella knew she simply wasn't equipped for independence. Every time she and Tony split up, she relied entirely on him financially. Not that Tony wanted it any other way -- it was definitely a codependent relationship. But when she was trying to divorce him, there was nothing preventing her from getting a job of her own or even moving out of his house. In fact, when they agreed for him to move back in, a new financial arrangement was part of the deal. She carried a lot of self loathing really hated herself sometimes, but Carmella was never going to live any other way.

Also the silent auction scene was very interesting. Ang gives that 'time is money' vibe and her suggesting the live auctioneer so that the people can 'tear their throats' to make more money highlights how on point her business prowess is. Carm went from embarrassment and disdain of Ang to envy.

This is one of the reasons why the sopranos is one of the best shows of all time. A side character with such a small amount of screen time is able to have a complete and deep arc

Not only that, but the side character of Angie Bonpensiero also gives more depth to Carmela's character. Carmela is an insecure fraud. She pretends to be an independent woman, but she's not. She's dependent on her husband for everything and jealous of Angie because Angie is self-made. She was more than happy to look down on her, but when Angie becomes successful Carmela doesn't like it.

It's sort of interesting that many are attributing the emotion of envy to Carmella as far as Angie goes. I'm not sure it was so much envy as sadness that Carmella hadn't done more with her own life. It was certainly Angie that inspired Carmella to start her own projects. Which appear to be getting her towards financial independence and a more equal relationship with Tony.
