I wish Nancy Marchand didn’t get sick and pass away in real life. Imagine how amazing her performance could have been if she had been around for the duration of the show. Maybe if she was still around, tony would have realized how terrible he was getting to be, especially in season 6
Ryan Akwar oh without a doubt. Extremely talented actress. I’ll even go out on a limb and say she was a bigger scene-stealer than others like tony, Paulie, and ralph. I liked her relationship with AJ too. AJ got his depressing view on the world from Livia. Her words echo in his mind even in season 6. I can only imagine how crazy some scenes could have been in the later seasons. Tony was an absolute degenerate in season 6B. I would have loved to see that tony talk to his mother

8:03 😂. Realizing she just got caught up. Has no excuses left so just let’s out a grunt lol. Livia is a brilliant character. How she portrayed herself after the failed hit was next level. She was straight evil
This is my mother. If I had a dime for each time she told me that 'sons take better care of their mother than daughters' (a dig to me of course)... She knew who she was though; in fact she took pride in referring to herSELF as' Livia'. How's that for sick? I went no contact 5 years ago and my life exponentially improved, thank God. My 2 sisters are exactly like Tony's too. I cut those ties as well for my own sanity-they are their mother's daughters-black holes of need, greed, manipulation, denial, delusion, etc. It was emotional and eye opening watching this series because of the family parallels.
when I mentioned Livia to my own Livia-esque mother, she also said "reminds me of your grandmother" when in reality my grandma's only ever been good to me, i feel like now everything she ever said about my grandma can be applied to herself more than anyone, she told me my grandma wanted to infantilize me, send me away to a loony bin, she said she was a greedy heartless monster and all the while that was herself she was talking about, not my grandma.. sometimes I feel like I should've been my grandma's son instead of my mother's son.
@Firstname Lastname In this video, when he's trying to come into her house, he says "Ma, it's me". So, she forgot what her only son sounds like, but remembers the name of a boy he went to school with? Nah, it's all power games. Very sad, but well written.
Nancy Marchand (Tony's mother Livia Soprano) was born on June 19, 1928, and died one day before her seventy-second birthday on June 18, 2000. James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano) died on Marchand's eighty-fifth birthday on June 19, 2013.
I'd love to know what David Chase had in plan for Livia and the plot in general had Nancy Marchand not died. Would be interesting to see how different the show would be.
I'll bet if she hadn't died in real life, her character would have sent Tony to his grave with a heart attack. She drove his blood pressure sky high and just plain drove everybody else crazy.
How did the actress not died, the storyline for season three was going to be Livia testifying against Tony about the airline tickets. Her death in real life forced them to compromise and they decided to kill off her character as well.
Nah, Livia knew just how to play Janice. I'm pretty certain that there was no money, but Livia convinced Janice there was buried wealth just to screw with her.
@@JohnDoe-xf8ew nah there was money because junior said that she was left with a package that could choke a fucking elephant but either she spent it all or didn't use it at all.
This is why I always felt Janice should have replaced Livia on the show. A sibling rivalry wouldn't be as bad as a mother, but it would have been an interesting dynamic.
The scene after her funeral in Tony's house is probably the most fulfilling moment in the show for me. By the time Carmella's dad is loosing his shit and says what everyone thinks in this room is such an amazing moment bc we as the viewer feel just like them. She literally ruined their lives (and therefore our experience watching them) with her existence. Truly amazing performance!
Nancy Marchand, what an incredible actress she was. Truly amazing as Livia Soprano. She was also in a Naked Gun film too showing her range as an actor. RIP.
Sopranoes starting gerting off a little towards the end seems like it was off kimter trying to get everything in David wanted in tbe episodes to tell the story at the end
Liv is so PAINFULLY well written and acted. I keep finding myself forgetting she's a character and getting angry at her. I grew up with a mother and grandmother who were also extremely narcissistic, so the little things liv does resonate so hard. For example, livia makes a big huff about going to an assisted living home to the point where tony has a heart attack, and then when Janice offers to take her home, she says she likes the nursing home. CLASSIC bpd.
Livia is my favourite TV villain of all time. She was so vicious, vindictive and ruthless, yet presented herself as a poor put upon old lady. She manipulated Junior (a very shrewd man in his own right) with ease. #OhPoooooooooorYou 😆
God she was brilliant in this role I think it was a perfect send off don’t know what she was like in real life but I bet she was very pleasant in real life
Janice is often the butt of the joke in the series, but her reaction to Livia's remark at 15:43... Aida Turturro doesn't get enough credit for her acting. It's funny: I started watching _The Sopranos_ because I heard it was a great series about an Italian-American mobster, but the more I revisit it, the less I care about the mafia angle. This is a family drama through and through - one of the best ever committed to the screen.
I agree with you on Janice. As irritating as she was, that shot of her looking forlorn and heartbroken stuck with me. You really feel her despair. It's sad that there are parents out there like Livia Soprano. Anyway, four dollars a pound.
This is totally my family! The father mother relationship is totally my dad and his mom. The mother daughter and AJ and Tony are my family. Maybe this is how most families where a narcissist is involved are like. The griping continuously is so relatable.
I grew up with a mother just like her. She even referred to herSELF as ""Livia" based on this character-how bad is that?? NOBODY gets out alive with a mother like this unless you cut and run. I did and it was the best thing I could have done for myself.
In a show full of terrifying narcissists and psychopaths, Livia Soprano is by far the scariest one. Nearly every other character has at least _some_ warmth for someone or something in their hearts, some kind of human vulnerability or Achille’s Heel. But Livia is a stone cold manipulator with ice in her veins, and she gets what she wants…or someone else dies trying.
When Melfi turns around in Tony’s dream and it’s Livia had me rolling laughing😂 Then the episode where Tony has his near-Death Experience, Buscemi tells him “You’re Going Home” and out of nowhere a familiar older woman’s silhouette wearing a mourning veil appears in the doorway as if she was always there, but as Tony walks forward She walks into the Funeral(Livia’s=Satan and the “Kevin Finerty Reunion”/Infinity Reunion/Final Resting Place=Hell.) By the time Tony has his near death experience in the show, the actress for Livia had passed away, so to “see her” again and again in these dream sequences is both kinda spooky but also really awesome

Also, at 9:40 when she complains about Junior not knocking--"I could've been in the nude!"--I think it would have been hilarious if Junior responded, "Yeah, just like in the old days."
says a lot that Tony is actually defending Janice infront of Livia, absolutely brilliant stuff!
She reminds of my own grandmother, especially all the guilt bombs.
Livia..if you look real hard is the original gangster in that show
Just an odd factoid that came into my head: John Maynard Keynes the famed British economist died in his mother's arms. And while I'm at it, Baruch Spinoza the famed Dutch philosopher died in the bed in which he was born.
if she'd be born after those feminists.
David Chase said in an interview that his original impetus in writing The Sopranos was exploring his relationship with his mother. Disturbing character, brilliant acting
"Kill me now. Go into the ham... and get the carving knife" the show's writers knew just how to elevate this show to the level of brilliance it was. "Go into the ham", lmao
When they die, Italians don't go into the light, they go into the ham
Good ol foreshadowing of Junior's fate.
@Shiloh Sinaloa I will say that David Chase paid attention to every little detail.
@Shiloh Sinaloa I do agree with you there. I always catch something else. And I spend hours watching these clips on TH-cam. I just lose track of time
RawOne911 yes, at 10:04 predicts his dementia. So was Livia really losing her marbles or was she just playing along? Did she really want tony dead and want him killed? I can never tell. She plays it so well.
@@wq198mnr I meant to put a timestamp. But yeah I would say she was getting a little forgetful as most older people do but used it to her advantage to play people lol. But you're right It is hard to tell. That's my opinion
@@RawOne911 Nice Raw the sacred and the propane.
I wish Nancy Marchand didn’t get sick and pass away in real life. Imagine how amazing her performance could have been if she had been around for the duration of the show. Maybe if she was still around, tony would have realized how terrible he was getting to be, especially in season 6
She was supposed to die at the end of season 1.
She was going to testify against tony. Whole storyline would be different.
Hammer332 no she’s wasn’t she was gonna testify against Tony in season 2
They had plans for her for season 3 and had to change everything which is why it seemed so weird compared to the first two seasons
I don't know what you're talking about
Read it in her voice
I don't like that kind of talk!
Reminds me of my mother - all too familiar malignant narcissist .....
Excellent portrayal of an unhealthy mother who insidiously and incestuously manipulates those around her creating chaos and constantly attention seeking 👏
do they ever get tired of it lol
incestuously?! I had a mother like Livia too but she never came onto me
“I wish the Lord would take me now” reminds me so much of my grandmother lmao.
" My son got shot, and he got away..." -Livia
Dead giveaway she know exactly what she was doing getting Junior to try to kill him
@@mcgruff157 What were you saying? I think my ear hurts. I did pass my Coast Guard test.
Of course we go and see him.....he's my only son!!!
"I'm not dead ..unfortunately for some"
...I love this woman.
The lesson here is that when you push others away with your misery you do die in your own arms.
Will I Ever Be Good Enough? Healing the Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers
by Karyl McBride
Is a decent read about the topic in motion.
Same. Many parallels
when I mentioned Livia to my own Livia-esque mother, she also said "reminds me of your grandmother" when in reality my grandma's only ever been good to me, i feel like now everything she ever said about my grandma can be applied to herself more than anyone, she told me my grandma wanted to infantilize me, send me away to a loony bin, she said she was a greedy heartless monster and all the while that was herself she was talking about, not my grandma.. sometimes I feel like I should've been my grandma's son instead of my mother's son.
Didn't remember Tony, but knew Artie well enough to guilt trip Tony.
Quasimodo had to have predicted all of that.
Satanic Black Magic!
That scene at the end when Tony falls on the stairs leaving the house and Livia starts laughing at him. Reminded me of the Emperor in Star Wars.
Also the one 'good' memory Tony had from growing up was his dad falling down and the whole family laughing at him 😝
“You’re using mesquite!, that makes the sausage taste peculiar!” -fucking hilarious Livia Soprano quote. That truly personified her character for me!
It’s amazing how Livia has been gone since season 3, and she was still talked about the seasons after that.
Shows what a powerful character she was.
“It’s all a big nothing. What makes you think you’re so special?” -Ma
The people you love let you down, and you die in your own arms. Truth.
@@danholliday5564 But she loved AJ and was proud of him when Carmela made him ride his bike over to visit.
I think she was supposed to testify against him at an indictment hearing
If she survived than the Sopranos would’ve been more legendary than it already is.
How did the actress not died, the storyline for season three was going to be Livia testifying against Tony about the airline tickets. Her death in real life forced them to compromise and they decided to kill off her character as well.
I’d assume they didn’t have too many big plans for the character. The actress was on borrowed time dying of cancer the entirety of the show.
Christ I love Nancy Marchand.
And I absolutely hate cancer. Johnny Boy’s actor Joe Sivaro just died too.
I love her she was soo great on this show !! 😍 ❤
She was BRILLIANT!
Livia was one of the biggest villains of the show. The actress was amazing at playing her.
The fact that Livia could manipulate ANYONE but Janice just shows how scary of a villain Janice was.
Nah, Livia knew just how to play Janice. I'm pretty certain that there was no money, but Livia convinced Janice there was buried wealth just to screw with her.
Wasnt Janice just like Livia, no conscience, that's why Livia couldn't touch her?
@@JohnDoe-xf8ew nah there was money because junior said that she was left with a package that could choke a fucking elephant but either she spent it all or didn't use it at all.
@@ambrizfer7898 One of the great unsolved mysteries of the show
This is why I always felt Janice should have replaced Livia on the show. A sibling rivalry wouldn't be as bad as a mother, but it would have been an interesting dynamic.
“Open the window and just push me out”🤣
It’s uncanny how much this reminds me of my own grandmother, God rest her soul.
Or my grandmother, I still remember the holidays she brought us on. Good times. I hope she burns in hell.
I bet she was a saint
She was a Saint
Same, and over her grave my uncle spoke over how much of a pious woman she was.
Livia was an incredible character who had some of the biggest laugh out loud lines and Nancy Marchand delivered them brilliantly.
"Who's that girl??"
"That's your granddaughter"
"Alright don't get impatient"
😂😂😂😂
Livia was hysterical. They picked the perfect Woman to play her part. Junior and Livia were too funny.
Well summarized.
Nancy really made Livia a real life person. “I will not eat in this house!”, everything thing she said was believable.
Olivia was the best to re watch...toxic but very funny...Nancy made her very real and consistent in her misery making of family.
Love how she offers Janice that nasty tapioca pudding she didn't want lol. She hates her
The "I wish the Lord would take me" quote just made me laugh harder scene after scene
Nancy Marchand, what an incredible actress she was. Truly amazing as Livia Soprano. She was also in a Naked Gun film too showing her range as an actor. RIP.
Oh God I forgot about that
I loved dr livia melfi. I wish they’d have done more with her character.
Livia was one of the best characters in this whole show. Hilarious but so so true to how some women behave. So well written
Jennifer D I’ve never met a man that lays on the guilt the way women do 😅
What about a Gameboy? I mean a gay man?
Based on David Chase’s mother apparently
I could barely get through the scenes because she is just like my mother.
Nancy Marchand nailed that role. She cracked me up with her constant "I wish the Lord would come and take me." LOL
Livia is my favourite TV villain of all time. She was so vicious, vindictive and ruthless, yet presented herself as a poor put upon old lady. She manipulated Junior (a very shrewd man in his own right) with ease. #OhPoooooooooorYou 😆
Now look here-I don’t like seein Sopranos uploads from someone other than Borko. Just stop it it upsets me

RIP Nancy Marchand . She was amazing and brilliant.💜 She was terminal with cancer but still acted the heck out of this role !
God she was brilliant in this role I think it was a perfect send off don’t know what she was like in real life but I bet she was very pleasant in real life
I like the caregiver "THAT'S IT!". Small role but very memorable
20 years on You Tube, I looked for more Borko uploads. I compromised. I watched Nick Spears uploads instead.
Borko hasn't gone anywhere. Nothing has changed so keep your views and uploads his way !
Borko's the boss of this family
I brought Cds for a broken record.
Reminds me of my Dad's Sicilian side of the family except they weren't into organized crime.
This is totally my family! The father mother relationship is totally my dad and his mom. The mother daughter and AJ and Tony are my family. Maybe this is how most families where a narcissist is involved are like. The griping continuously is so relatable.
"I am nobody's darling" You got that right! 🤣🤣
She was a classic narcissist mother
She was a borderline personality.
My grandmother was meaner. Don't believe me.trust me she was haa
@@TheJ602 Yes, Dr Melfi even says it. Why don't people get it
The name Chase chose for her - Livia - so perfect. Livia was the wife of the emperor Augustus. Look her up. Yikes.
Watch the series I, Claudius. Another Livia, you just have to be careful with what you eat.
@@murrayaronson3753 I was gonna say the same thing, that Livia is ruthless AF.
"What's all this Caesar Augustus shit? You fucking with me?"
I thought the same thing. A real Roman (stone-cold) matriarch. Livia certainly lived up to her namesake.
I could imagine growing up with such a mother. That’s why Tony came out the way he did. Just like her.
When Melfi turns around in Tony’s dream and it’s Livia had me rolling laughing😂
Then the episode where Tony has his near-Death Experience, Buscemi tells him “You’re Going Home” and out of nowhere a familiar older woman’s silhouette wearing a mourning veil appears in the doorway as if she was always there, but as Tony walks forward She walks into the Funeral(Livia’s=Satan and the “Kevin Finerty Reunion”/Infinity Reunion/Final Resting Place=Hell.) By the time Tony has his near death experience in the show, the actress for Livia had passed away, so to “see her” again and again in these dream sequences is both kinda spooky but also really awesome
