Meadow knows she’s towing the line with asking about really happened to Jackie and doesn’t believe her Dad would let her in to that world but when Tony says “you try me” it’s him saying “you wanna know about the mob life? Well you really don’t. It’s dark, it’s brutal, people die. Stay in college and stop using his death as an excuse”
No. She knows he knows more about how he really died. That's why she pushed it so hard. He's a liar and faithful to la Cosa nostra. More than anyone..she knew that.
In the end Meadow was right. Tony wanted them so insulated from the mob stuff yet he DID order the death of Jackie Jr. who was in an intimate relationship with Meadow shortly prior to that. Tony made Ralphy do it, and didn't consider how it would shatter Meadow, or Rosalie, or his best friend Jackie (now dead).

This scene is the epitome of why I loved the Sopranos. Tony might be one of the most powerful people in his world but at home he's just a Dad totally flummoxed by his kids and wife.
It's also Carmela being a hypocrite. All she and Tony do is try and get what they want. They're a literal crime family, but Meadow wanting to do normal things is her being a baby.

Carmela is trying to stop Meadow from doing something normal that her therapist encouraged her to do. The therapist was Carmela's idea but as soon as she's contradicted suddenly it's a bad idea. Meadow is an adult. Carmela is the one being a baby about this, because she's mad that SHE'S not getting what SHE wants. The number of people in these comments acting like Tony and Carmela are good, responsible parents is frankly baffling.
Agreed. He matched their skills even in their early years like Pacino in the Godfather or Dog Day Afternoon and DeNiro in Mean Streets or Raging Bull. Watch Gandolfini's scenes in the Mexican. It is a silly movie but he blows Julia Roberts out of almost every scene they are in and Roberts had good material, a role well suited for her and was definitely in character.
Better than DeNiro one of the most overrated actors of all time. Not as versatile as Pacino. But his TS is equal in complexity to any of Pacino's gangsters. In some ways better. More human, real.
Nobody talks about the second "Tony!" from Carmela. Partly anger at his rudeness but mostly fear of what he might do in the face of Meadow venturing into no-go conversational territory. Amazing acting from Edie Falco as always

Jamie Lynn talked about this scene on a podcast and how amazing James was in preparing her for it. For those who don't know, she had very little TV experience and had to be helped by Robert Iller in her first few episodes on where to look in relation to the camera. Jim offered her the use of his acting coach as well. She thought the coach was doing it out of a gesture of goodwill to Jim, only to find out later that he paid for all of it. Prepping for this scene while they rehearsed, Jim kept telling her "In this moment, you HATE this man". Everything about Tony should disgust Meadow and part of her wanting to go to Europe is to be anywhere but in Jersey and next to the mafia family that comes with being Tony's daughter. That life got Jackie killed so now she hates everything and everyone associated with it and wants to do nothing but just get away from them. She said they went over it again and again until they were satisfied with her level of hatred and disgust.
That life got Jackie killed? No. Jackie was killed by his own stupidity and poor choices. Nobody forced him into this life. He was encouraged NOT to do it. But simply put there is no cure for stupidity.
In the last season Meadow ran out of Jacky Jr's wake and made it clear she was having problems living in this world where she has to cover for her dad, while not knowing if he had anything to do with Jacky's death. It's a major part of season 4. This is the confrontation.

The interesting thing about Meadow and Tony in this scene is that this is really the only time that Meadow sees Tony’s other personality as a Boss. They never really have any fights or disagreements after this, and the fear in her eyes is really telling. Amazing scene.

Well actually Meadow says "doing" what you want, Carmella changes it to "getting" , and yes, getting what you want is for babies, but doing what you want is part of what it is to develop independence, to go out and fail of your own accord, and learn your own lessons: that is absolutely part of what it is to be an adult, and it's something that Tony and Carmella are standing in the way of here, hence Meadow's frustration is in a sense justified. Is she being a depressive brat? Sure, but her boyfriend was also recently wacked by her father, so she gets a bit of a pass in my book.

This was really the continuation of the rift that had occurred between Tony and Meadow at the end of Season Three where she ran across the street to get away from him. She was pushing him, sure that he had something to do with Jackies death... and she knew that if he had been responsible it would have been the most hurtful thing he could have done to her. She needed to push him because she wanted to hear him say, either yes he had been reponsible for Jackie, or no he had nothing to do with it. Tony, on his part, read intimations very well, and responded with the words of his conviction that he had done everything to try and protect Jackie, to even steer him away from that lifestyle. Technically, it wasn’t Tony who killed Jackie anyway, but Ralf (although Tony knew full well about it)... he spoke his words to her with such conviction that she could only believe him, and trust him again. That was what I got from this clip. Its similar to the Coach Hauser situation in Season One. It would have meant nothing to any of Tony’s crew to have wacked the coach once they learned that he had been playing with one of the soccer girls, but as Charmaine, and then Artie soon realised, had Tony or his crew whacked the coach, there was no way that the girls in the team (their daughters) wouldn’t feel responsible, especially Meadow (Remember, Meadow had asked Tony in the previous episode to Boca whether he was a mob boss) and it had been Meadow who had told Carmila and Tony about the coach and his behaviour in the first place.
Imagine if after Tony says "You got something to say to me?" To Meadow she says "You never had the makings of a varsity athlete". I'm sure we'd be dealing with a domestic abuse case.
It was a horrible thing to say to her dad. He is a bad man but he basically sold his soul so she and AJ could have the finer things in life. He never in a million years would have harmed either of his kids (even that very much deserved slap he gave AJ made him feel guilty).
What amazed me about this scene was how Tony Soprano instantly switched from being the concerned dad to the cold, intimidating, overpowering, and towering thug persona as his daughter stupidly and arrogantly stepped into the forbidden zone. James Gandolfini was not only a truly great & gifted actor, he was cut-out for the role of Tony Soprano....the one and only. RIP James.

Man, the acting here is unreal! You literally go from watching Tony be a Dad to getting up and and then talking to her as a VERY intimidating Mafia Boss. It’s actually chilling. Great stuff!
The difference is, Tony made things happen, took risks, made enemies. Carmela just fed off Tony, used his power to intimidate others when she felt like it, and condemned that power when she didn't need it. She wouldn't survive two days without him. Also, he's funny and entertainning, she's not -- at least not after Season 2. A character who does nothing but bitch is worthless.
Any dignity she had went out the window when she put a price tag on getting back with Tony, and his only concession was his cheating wouldnt interfere with her life anynore i.e. crazy exes calling the house.
The moment he tells his wife to shut up from that point on this is probably the best scene of this entire series. If you could believe this I just started watching this about three weeks ago. And I blast through it because the acting is so incredible

That's a completely inaccurate reading of this whole scene. Meadow opened up everything at every step of the way, Tony deflected the whole way through.
Meadow was forced into lying for her father and guilt tripping Jackys sister at her own brothers wake. She had intelligent notions about what probably went on so she got drunk and stormed out. She can't process the grief because of the lies and she's using Jackys death as a manipulation because she doesn't fully empathise with her own regression. What she needs is honesty but she knows all she'll get is pathetic narcissistic half truths from the man that's meant to be raising her.
Tony could've ended the whole thing so much more quickly. "You want to go to Europe? Fine. Do it on your own dime, then, 'Miss Grown Woman.'" Discussion over.

Had an English teacher in High School who used to act in theatre productions. He was so good at acting that he often prank us by getting angry for small things like; us asking to turn off the AC because it was too cold or asking to borrow his whiteout, and then laughing it off. He was so scary when he was acting angry.
Jamie's acting in this scene is actually phenomenal. When she just looks at her Dad scared, angry, upset.. you can see all of them emotions at once and for a second i could see my younger self in that moment with my own father.

Meadow is Tony’s keeper. Her soul is running thin lying and covering for him and that’s what this entire scene breaks down to. She can’t take it anymore and wants to run away. She’s worried he’s going to end up like Jackie Jr. But she knows he’s not a bad man, as per what he says about trying to save Jackie and the emotional conviction he uses to convey that. Brilliant scene.

One of my favorite scenes of James' acting. The way he gets in Meadows face the same way he tends to do so with mafioso's is frightening. Seeing him turn that particular stabbing rage towards his daughter had me on the edge of my seat. The way you see him start to break down behind his words ever so slightly is the cherry on top. I agree ...and I am amazed at the set design person to make her room up so perfect ...bowls ..clothes ..the posters ...the hangar on the desk ...that is someone's job and they did it perfect. The outside house is a real house in Jersey but the HBO set for the interior shots were so well done !

Jamie Lynn talked about this scene on a podcast and how amazing James was in preparing her for it. For those who don't know, she had very little TV experience and had to be helped by Robert Iller in her first few episodes on where to look in relation to the camera.
Jim offered her the use of his acting coach as well. She thought the coach was doing it out of a gesture of goodwill to Jim, only to find out later that he paid for all of it. Prepping for this scene while they rehearsed, Jim kept telling her "In this moment, you HATE this man". Everything about Tony should disgust Meadow and part of her wanting to go to Europe is to be anywhere but in Jersey and next to the mafia family that comes with being Tony's daughter.
That life got Jackie killed so now she hates everything and everyone associated with it and wants to do nothing but just get away from them. She said they went over it again and again until they were satisfied with her level of hatred and disgust.

The interesting thing about Meadow and Tony in this scene is that this is really the only time that Meadow sees Tony’s other personality as a Boss. They never really have any fights or disagreements after this, and the fear in her eyes is really telling. Amazing scene.

Well actually Meadow says "doing" what you want, Carmella changes it to "getting" , and yes, getting what you want is for babies, but doing what you want is part of what it is to develop independence, to go out and fail of your own accord, and learn your own lessons: that is absolutely part of what it is to be an adult, and it's something that Tony and Carmella are standing in the way of here, hence Meadow's frustration is in a sense justified.
Is she being a depressive brat? Sure, but her boyfriend was also recently wacked by her father, so she gets a bit of a pass in my book.

This was really the continuation of the rift that had occurred between Tony and Meadow at the end of Season Three where she ran across the street to get away from him. She was pushing him, sure that he had something to do with Jackies death... and she knew that if he had been responsible it would have been the most hurtful thing he could have done to her. She needed to push him because she wanted to hear him say, either yes he had been reponsible for Jackie, or no he had nothing to do with it. Tony, on his part, read intimations very well, and responded with the words of his conviction that he had done everything to try and protect Jackie, to even steer him away from that lifestyle. Technically, it wasn’t Tony who killed Jackie anyway, but Ralf (although Tony knew full well about it)... he spoke his words to her with such conviction that she could only believe him, and trust him again. That was what I got from this clip.
Its similar to the Coach Hauser situation in Season One. It would have meant nothing to any of Tony’s crew to have wacked the coach once they learned that he had been playing with one of the soccer girls, but as Charmaine, and then Artie soon realised, had Tony or his crew whacked the coach, there was no way that the girls in the team (their daughters) wouldn’t feel responsible, especially Meadow (Remember, Meadow had asked Tony in the previous episode to Boca whether he was a mob boss) and it had been Meadow who had told Carmila and Tony about the coach and his behaviour in the first place.
Imagine if after Tony says "You got something to say to me?" To Meadow she says "You never had the makings of a varsity athlete". I'm sure we'd be dealing with a domestic abuse case.

Meadow was forced into lying for her father and guilt tripping Jackys sister at her own brothers wake. She had intelligent notions about what probably went on so she got drunk and stormed out. She can't process the grief because of the lies and she's using Jackys death as a manipulation because she doesn't fully empathise with her own regression. What she needs is honesty but she knows all she'll get is pathetic narcissistic half truths from the man that's meant to be raising her.

It was inevitable. Carm was only deluding herself that her children would remain ignorant forever. Perhaps the over-shielding by her and Tony is what caused Meadow and AJ’s immaturity.

Given further context into the situation, Meadow was dating a man named Jackie Jr. who was connected to the mob. After he was killed, she got drunk at his funeral and decided to believe that he was killed by drug dealers, not the mafia. This statement here shows that Meadow is always going back and forth between denial and acceptance of the mafia lifestyle in her life.
Excellent observation. She calls out her Dad and casts moral judgement when she's trying to win an argument. But goes into total denial when in the presence of outsiders.
I always thought the quote was basically Meadow emasculating him by saying that despite him being a feasome crime lord who has murdered many people and is in charge of a notorious crime syndicate, he still does what his wife tells him.

@@lilmane1070 Close, but just not there, what shows (And even the Breaking Bad franchise) miss today is the nitty gritty human details, rubbing your nose when you're unsure, verbal mistakes, voice cracks, eye language, ticks, I have not seen a show in the last 15 years do this other than 'The Boys'.
@@lilmane1070 really close.. I liked BCS over breaking bad because of the deep relationship between Kim and Jimmy. It was a great character study. Maybe even on par with the sopranos, but I'm not really sure..

They didn’t write their characters to act like completely different people than they were the whole series, they actually had great, compelling stories, and they nailed the actual ending. Meadow is Tony’s keeper. Her soul is running thin lying and covering for him and that’s what this entire scene breaks down to. She can’t take it anymore and wants to run away. She’s worried he’s going to end up like Jackie Jr. But she knows he’s not a bad man, as per what he says about trying to save Jackie and the emotional conviction he uses to convey that. Brilliant scene.
My god, the writing, the acting...to this day this show is still ground breaking. Seriously...even when he sat on the cereal bowl...simply amazing

One of my favorite scenes of James' acting. The way he gets in Meadows face the same way he tends to do so with mafioso's is frightening. Seeing him turn that particular stabbing rage towards his daughter had me on the edge of my seat. The way you see him start to break down behind his words ever so slightly is the cherry on top. RIP MR. GANDALFINI

I agree ...and I am amazed at the set design person to make her room up so perfect ...bowls ..clothes ..the posters ...the hangar on the desk ...that is someone's job and they did it perfect. The outside house is a real house in Jersey but the HBO set for the interior shots were so well done !
