This is the most romantic song ever imo. I remember the first time I heard it in 1971. The same year I got my first kiss ever, had my first date evet and all with my first husband. We married in 1974. He died in the Navy in 1975.

These guys just had it going on in the 70’s
I was once asked by a bride to play and sing a song at her wedding, "If" by David Gates is the song I chose. There were three young girls sitting on the floor immediately in front of me. Before I got through the guitar intro they were beginning to have tears in their eyes. If you only move your head like a bobble toy in the back window of a car and not listen to the words, you won't get anything from the song. If you don't understand the lyrics that have been put into a song by a singer/songwriter you'll miss the best part of any song. Music is not just about the beat or the meter.
This has got to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Not just in
our time but of all time.
My wife & I have been married 39 years . And I was listening to Bread long before Her & I met. So you two have A LOT of good years ahead of you.

There's an album cut, "The Chosen One", should have been a single. As good as any of the hits.

I appreciate this channel a lot, been listening to all kinds of good music for more than 50 years, and this channel is the closest to my music collection and musical tastes, the quality and diversity always brings me back for more, that's so nice... As for this song in particular, one of the most romantic ever, short lyrics but beautiful expression of love, now don't want to be preachy, but it's one of the rare songs I've seen your wife be touched on a romantic level, you could see on her face as the song progressed how it touched her on an emotionnal level... Meanwhile my man responds at the end talking about loafs of bread and responded to her that he may have dedicated the song to her cause for now she was on his good side... The man's taste in music is impeccable, but he sure could learn a thing or two in the romance departement...

Our first time on the road opening for some of the bands you've played on this channel so thank you. I've been married for 30 years and with my wife for almost 35. For our wedding we played "Thank You" by Led Zeppelin, "Have I Told You Lately" the Van Morrison version and

One that I personally never hear at a wedding, but thought it would be great to hear is The Beatles "When I'm Sixty Four" . I also should be embarrassed about this, but I always also liked Adam Sandler song from the Wedding Singer movie "Grow Old With You". Always brings a tear or two to my eyes.
Another great love song group is Air Supply with hit songs like, "Every Woman in the World", "All out of Love", "Making Love out of Nothing at All", "Even the Nights are Better", "Here I Am", "Lost in Love"; to name a few...

I grew up listening to the soft rock music of Bread in the 70's & had their albums. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Make It With You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Everything I Own", "Diary", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender" & "Aubrey". In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".

To me, the best bread song is, everything I own. But then again I associated with my great grandma so my new really well as a little kid before she passed.

This song came out exactly 3 months after my wife and I got married and two weeks before she joined me with my Unit in W Germany! What memories.
The hits were slower songs, but their albums were full of variety. The quivering sound on If was produced by a guitar played through a synthesizer.
David Gates the lead singer for Bread did go out on his own later in his career. It that time he wrote and performed many other great songs too. Songs like Goodbye Girl, Find Me, I Will Wait for You, Part-Time Love, Overnite Sensation, Save This Dance for Me, Ann and This Could Be Forever to name a few.

I asked my music teacher if she would play this song for me as we were looking through a songbook and she looked at me like I was nuts but she did play it and I sang along and she allowed me to sing it at some assembly when I was in the 7th grade. This was the song that we played in marching band exactly once a year. We played it for homecoming while they were announcing the homecoming Court. We basically played the song for 10 straight minutes. It's been about 30 years since that time, but if I remember correctly my part had exactly three notes!, Repeated over and over and over.
Almost any song by bread is extremely poetic.
