This is the most romantic song ever imo. I remember the first time I heard it in 1971. The same year I got my first kiss ever, had my first date evet and all with my first husband. We married in 1974. He died in the Navy in 1975.
My mom would sing this song to me sometimes when she would put me to sleep at night. A very special song to me. I was 7 years old. Can't help but tear up every time I hear this.
I was once asked by a bride to play and sing a song at her wedding, "If" by David Gates is the song I chose. There were three young girls sitting on the floor immediately in front of me. Before I got through the guitar intro they were beginning to have tears in their eyes. If you only move your head like a bobble toy in the back window of a car and not listen to the words, you won't get anything from the song. If you don't understand the lyrics that have been put into a song by a singer/songwriter you'll miss the best part of any song. Music is not just about the beat or the meter.
@@davidcohen7146 I thank you very much. We married three months after we met. After I returned from overseas. Bread was one of the few groups we could agree on.
I appreciate this channel a lot, been listening to all kinds of good music for more than 50 years, and this channel is the closest to my music collection and musical tastes, the quality and diversity always brings me back for more, that's so nice... As for this song in particular, one of the most romantic ever, short lyrics but beautiful expression of love, now don't want to be preachy, but it's one of the rare songs I've seen your wife be touched on a romantic level, you could see on her face as the song progressed how it touched her on an emotionnal level... Meanwhile my man responds at the end talking about loafs of bread and responded to her that he may have dedicated the song to her cause for now she was on his good side... The man's taste in music is impeccable, but he sure could learn a thing or two in the romance departement...
These are songs that I remember hearing at weddings and liked. Carpenters "We've Only Just Begun" Paul Stookey "The Wedding Song (There is Love)" Peter, Paul and Mary also have a version. One that I personally never hear at a wedding, but thought it would be great to hear is The Beatles "When I'm Sixty Four" . I also should be embarrassed about this, but I always also liked Adam Sandler song from the Wedding Singer movie "Grow Old With You". Always brings a tear or two to my eyes.
Another great love song group is Air Supply with hit songs like, "Every Woman in the World", "All out of Love", "Making Love out of Nothing at All", "Even the Nights are Better", "Here I Am", "Lost in Love"; to name a few...
Come on now, y'all are an awesome duo. As a drummer for 53 years I enjoy your analysis of the music I grew up playing and touring on. Our first time on the road opening for some of the bands you've played on this channel so thank you. I've been married for 30 years and with my wife for almost 35. For our wedding we played "Thank You" by Led Zeppelin, "Have I Told You Lately" the Van Morrison version and "Moondance" by Van Morrison. Check those songs out they are great wedding songs. Keep up the great work, my wife and I love watching you and your wife!🍞🍞🍞
Here's a few from the list I compiled to play at a wedding that never took place. 'You're the Best Thing' - Paul Weller/Style Council. 'Message of Love' - Pretenders. 'Time in a Bottle' - Jim Croce.
A great song to end the wedding with is The Flamingoes' "I Only Have Eyes for You". I had it played at our wedding; my wife had never heard it before, and when it was finished she was crying.
I am commenting before I even listen becsuse I am excited. Ive never heard any Bread but ive always given my mom a hard time for liking a group called Bread lol.
I grew up listening to the soft rock music of Bread in the 70's & had their albums. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Make It With You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Everything I Own", "Diary", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender" & "Aubrey". In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".
My wife and I sang 'Annie's song' from John Denver to each other at our little wedding. If you ain't heard it, you are lucky, cos you have it to discover and love.
To me, the best bread song is, everything I own. But then again I associated with my great grandma so my new really well as a little kid before she passed.
In my younger days I use to play 'IF' on my acoustic a lot...And was hoping one day should I ever find my true love, my soulmate, that I would be able to play and sing this song to her...But it was never to be, for I've never found my true love nor soulmate...
Definitely check out The Wedding Song by Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul and Mary). It was played at every wedding for years and years after it came out. It is beautiful. Y’all may want to use it at your wedding too!
David Gates the lead singer for Bread did go out on his own later in his career. It that time he wrote and performed many other great songs too. Songs like Goodbye Girl, Find Me, I Will Wait for You, Part-Time Love, Overnite Sensation, Save This Dance for Me, Ann and This Could Be Forever to name a few.
Beautiful!! But I see her trying to get comfortable in the chair she's in. You guys are awesome. Get her a high back chair like yours. Keep up the good music
I was part of a trio, like Peter, Paul & Mary and we sang at dozens of weddings. A few of our favorites to play were: The Wedding Song (There is Love)" Paul Stookey, Follow You, Follow Me by Genesis and And I Love You So by Don McLean. Go for them all! What a great idea this is! Cheers! 😎🎶❤
We've only just begun (the carpenters) you are so beautiful...Dee, there's many beautiful songs from the 60s and 70s!! My husband and I have been married almost 50 years, you got this sweetie!! You two are a beautiful couple 💖💖💖💖
This was the song that we played in marching band exactly once a year. We played it for homecoming while they were announcing the homecoming Court. We basically played the song for 10 straight minutes. It's been about 30 years since that time, but if I remember correctly my part had exactly three notes!, Repeated over and over and over.
All married couples go through "good graces" and "bad graces". A song that expresses those feelings is by Orleans - "You're still the One". If you haven't reacted to it yet, this would be a good one. Other wedding songs: Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce; , Evergreen by Barbara Streisand; We've only just Begun by The Carpenters; Color my World by Chicago.
I asked my music teacher if she would play this song for me as we were looking through a songbook and she looked at me like I was nuts but she did play it and I sang along and she allowed me to sing it at some assembly when I was in the 7th grade. It was the last solo I had before leaving elementary school. It's heartbreakingly beautiful!! P.S. I think she looked at me oddly because I was this little Black girl in the inner city that chose this total Pop song
Bread = Cash 💰 Back then. Whenever I hear this song, I always flash back to driving East on Roscoe Bl about to turn left on Desoto Bl, in the San Fernando Valley of So Cal. heading back to my parents house. In the previous 6 months, my mother had died of cancer, my fiancée broke off our engagement and oh I got drafted .
This was a special reaction. It is so nice of you to share your hopes and dreams, we can all relate. For a wedding song check out Randy Travis Forever and Ever amen original video. Also, while on the subject of weddings you should watch/listen to SunriseSunset from Fiddler on the Roof. We had a soloist sing this at our wedding. Thanks for your honest reactions.
Such a beautiful song. I’m late to your party but I love what you guys do!!! I’m still listening to your Southern Rock segment. Not sure if you did “T for Texas” by Skynyrd but the live Knebworth performance is amazing!!!
I’ve been watching your reactions for well over a year. And I think you dig the “stuff” I do like Yes, Zeppelin, Floyd. SRV, etc. And being 53 now, I grew up on songs like Bread. One song I know you and your wife would like, if you haven’t been requested, is “I Love You” by Climax Blues Band. Check it out with your wife, You’ll love it!. And I think it’s a great WEDDING song.
🍞 The lead singer is David Gates, one of the nicest 'easy listening' music groups of all time in my book. Maybe try... " Sweet surrender, Aubrey, Everything I own, The Diary ", to name but a few!
Oooh.... Did he really diss Dee.... Damn... I would be sleeping elsewhere after that one... Not even on the coach... Out of the f...ing house... Oooh... Think you've got an absolutely amazing one, Chod. Bless you and your lady!

Such a sad but oh so sweet story Teresia, thank you for sharing.
hi Teresia, They just don't write great songs like this anymore, such great simple lyrics
I'm so sorry for your loss
Condolences 😘
So sorry. What a touching testimony of love. ♡

Their "Baby I'm-A Want You" and "It Don't Matter To Me" are next for both of you!
Perfect ones to be next.
@@Teresia12 thank you
These guys just had it going on in the 70’s
This has got to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Not just in
our time but of all time.
My wife & I have been married 39 years . And I was listening to Bread long before Her & I met. So you two have A LOT of good years ahead of you.
Congrats on being married so long Don. Thats awesome!! David Gates is a pure genius.
@@davidcohen7146 I thank you very much. We married three months after we met. After I returned from overseas. Bread was one of the few groups we could agree on.
Remember young man. True Love is NOT Conditional. When you Truly love someone, they are ALWAYS in your 'Good Graces'. Peace and Blessings..
Oh wow. The group BREAD was one of the best bands of all time, especially for love songs. Please do more of their songs. You'll love them.
"Baby I'm A Want You", "Everything I Own", "Diary", "It Don't Matter to Me" and "Let Your Love Go" are Bread staples...Glad you got into them....
dont forget Mother Freedom
Amazing
@@caseyjones9642 Yes! This is their only song that comes close to a rock song or banger. It's good! Nearly all their songs are slow love songs.
There's an album cut, "The Chosen One", should have been a single. As good as any of the hits.
I agree
Sounds normal husband and wife banter!! Over time, you'll appreciate each other more.
Musical perfection
If is certainly one of the most beautiful songs to come out of the magical 70s, and melody-wise, one of the most beautiful ever composed.❤
🍞 Grew up listening to Bread. Mom loved them. If, is my favorite of theirs. It's simply beautiful.
David Gates wrote "Everything I Own" dedicated to his late father....it's beautiful!
"Let me see what he look like." Girl, I feel you! 😅
Bread was an incredible band with hit after hit

This was my wedding song. David Gates is the finest songwriter of his generation.
You could consider the Etta James classic, AT LAST. It never fails. Your wife will love you forever. And it will melt her ❤.

America's "I Need You" is another great one like this, with beautiful harmonies
In the spirit of the couples’ last wedding dance … please ✅ out “Onward” - Yes. as it will give you similar vibes. 👍🏻
Written by the late great Chris Squire.
Color My World by Chicago is a beautiful song for your wedding!
Bread had really great songs and I appreciate them more as I’m older
These are the songs we were falling in love to back then. They will always be in my memories. 💕🍀
I most definitely fell in love to this song in particular. Those are bittersweet memories.
@@Teresia12 same 💔
Not too shabby for a 50 year old song. 💕
This song is timeless.
The Wedding Song (Peter, Paul &Mary), Have you ever really loved a woman (Bryan Adams), The air that I breathe (The Hollies)
The Air That I Breathe is perfect for a wedding.
Here's a few from the list I compiled to play at a wedding that never took place.
'You're the Best Thing' - Paul Weller/Style Council.
'Message of Love' - Pretenders.
'Time in a Bottle' - Jim Croce.
I knew she would really like this song. Fantastic group!
A great song to end the wedding with is The Flamingoes' "I Only Have Eyes for You". I had it played at our wedding; my wife had never heard it before, and when it was finished she was crying.

I liked your conversation as much as your reaction. It's a great song for a wedding.

this would be a great wedding song for sure
My wife and I sang 'Annie's song' from John Denver to each other at our little wedding. If you ain't heard it, you are lucky, cos you have it to discover and love.
At the height of this songs popularity, it was sung at a lot of weddings and also used as the first dance at wedding receptions.
Beautiful song!
The hits were slower songs, but their albums were full of variety. The quivering sound on If was produced by a guitar played through a synthesizer.
Omg with the cuteness!!! How do expect the other vloggers to match you??? u2 are something else. I hope that love you share never dies :)
To me, the best bread song is, everything I own. But then again I associated with my great grandma so my new really well as a little kid before she passed.
When I first met my late wife in 1973 she had this album and we listened to it all the time. We had an apartment by West High.

This song came out exactly 3 months after my wife and I got married and two weeks before she joined me with my Unit in W Germany! What memories.
All that needs to be said is that you were both smiling throughout.
All the great song writers were poets. And then they put it to a melody.
Time for you to react to her music. I can't believe she has not heard of some of these groups you play. Keeps your channel interesting I guess 🙂

could bread fans be "crumbs" maybe? one of my favorite bread songs is "it don't matter to me". another nice soft one.
He actually wrote this about his dad who passed away, but what a wonderful love song it is.
Great song. The "Good Graces" discussion is hilarious 🤣
