I was going to make a similar comment. This song applies not just to old lovers, but parents, children, friends that have moved on to the other side. Gone forever, and you suddenly realize that everything you have doesn't really mean as much as you thought it did.

I played this on guitar at my Mom's funeral with my niece on vocals. When she broke down and could not continue, I began to sing ( as loudly as I could, with no mic) when one by one, the entire congregation joined in and finished the rest of the song, amazingly, knowing all the words. A very special memory for me.

Thank you for sharing this. When my dad passed away, the pastor didnt show up for the funeral, so after family members said a few words, my brother and a couple of cousins started playing "I'll fly away", singing and playing guitar. WOW, after about 5 minutes, EVERYONE started singing along, to the point that my brother stopped playing the guitar, and we were all just singing. I thought for a minute we were about to have a revival! lol...What a send off for my dad, and knowing his sense of humor and LOVE of music, he was LOVING it.

That song hits me hard because my mother loved the band Bread and would sing the heck out of their songs. I grew up with 4 older siblings and was introduced to so many types of music -- from Bread to Dr. Hook to Black Sabbath. I don't know the singer's name but all of their songs were just beautiful because of his lyrics and their acoustic guitars. Nice pick!

This is one of your best reactions the writer and singer David Gates of Bread said in a interview this song is about his father. Thank you so much for such a heartfelt reaction❤

This song is a work of art...has some of the best bridges of any Bread song and that says a lot. Thanks for the review.

Beautiful song. I've owned Bread's music ever since they first came out. And I still have their music on my phone today. I've had their 8 tracks, cassettes, CDs, Ipod, downloads......

My mom's favorite Bread song! She wore out the Best of Bread cassette a few times over when I was a kid.
My favorite of theirs was always Mother Freedom. If I had a band I would totally cover it.

Reason #1,000,001 as to why the 70's music was so diverse, talented, and timeless. This stuff goes right through you.

Another great one from Bread is the song "If" - short but beautifully crafted and sung.

Per Songfacts According to the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, at his father's funeral, a friend took David Gates aside and said, "Your dad was so proud of what you were doing." David agreed by replying, "My success would have been so special to him as he was my greatest influence. So I decided to write and record Everything I Own about him. If you listen to the words, 'You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm, gave my life to me, set me free,' it says it all."
