David Gates and Bread were definitely a big part of the soundtrack of the lives of those of us becoming "grown ups" in the 70's! And I think maybe the word you are looking for to describe the emotions some of their music evokes is "wistful" but also hopeful! I thoroughly enjoy watching your reaction videos and look forward to seeing more!
I would agree. I hate to say it buy this type of devotion is sadly fading. My husband and I have been together 47 years and we listened to Bread on 8 track as teenagers. We are now 65 and still are this devoted to each other.
I graduated high school in 71 and this was my favorite Bread song. I would put the album on my stereo at night and fall asleep to them. I wished to find someone who felt like that about me
In 1963 Beverly and her family moved in across the street from me. We were both 4 yrs old. In just a short time we were inseparable. In 1983 we were married. I sang this song to her at our wedding. Two years later we had twin girls Katie and Kerry. In 1987 I again sang this song to her at her funeral. She was killed by a DRUNK DRIVER on her way home the grocery store. My life has never been the same...
@@johnlooney2319 "cheesy" - sounds like someone's uncomfortable embracing the feelings a song like this would bring them. Easier to just push those feelings away.
Sadly I use to sing this to my very beautiful wife, who Flew away non Feb 11th 2020 from a very rare heart condition we didn't know she had. Yes IO cry still when I hear this song. Thanks lovely Ladies for an honest reaction.
This was always my favorite song they did. I always wated a love like that and finally found it. My husband passed 17 months ago and I wish I could have flown away with him.
Next it has to be Everything I own". It's another love song but not your typical love song because it's written about his father after he passed away. I guarantee you will like it or my money back🤔😊
I'm 58. This song has been one of my favorites since the early 1970s. I was probably 7 or 8 when I first heard this song. Now, he's a cattle rancher in Montana.
The quivering guitar sound was done by playing an electric guitar through a synthesizer. Gates said it took him about an hour and a half to finish the song. It had an extra verse that he left off the finished product. He said that he immediately knew he had something special.
In the UK we had a Group called Ultravox. They had an amazing hits, starting with a song called Vienna. The lead singer Midge Ure later had a hit with a song called "If I was". I am sure you will love both the group and Midge the sound they made will be right down your street.
Was glad to find your reactions to Bread. Would like to see you react to Guitar Man by bread. Your reactions to The Bee Gees turned me into a fan of you both. Thank you.
I was a young teen when Bread came onto the scene. I spent hours in my room listening to Bread and other songs of the time of course but my gosh, when I saw the 45 spinning on the turntable, I was reminded me of the record label..... I studied the picture of that worm for quite some time. lol Great reaction, ladies. Take care and be well. Peace.
Hello, cnatview: I have good memories of those times too. I have that 45 with the caterpillar on the label. After a couple of years, that same Elektra label had a butterfly where the caterpillar had been.
You are right abt the 2nd phrase of the song, Helen of Troy. But the 1st phrase was abt the Mona Lisa painting, the third was time travel. He writes his songs so poetic. Where you can hear that the ending word of a phrase have the same sound of the next ending word phrase. A good technic in song writing & singing.😊😊😊
One of my favorite lines in any song I've ever heard "And when my love for life is running dry, you come and pour yourself on me"......next do "Diary" please!
Great line; have you also considered Heart's lines from their hit, Crazy On You? I always thought it was pretty neat. I was a willow last night in a dream I bent down over a clear running stream Sang you the song that I heard up above And you kept me alive with your sweet flowing love
@@festidious2644 oh the Diary, I’d forgotten about that one. Absolutely love it. I’ve still got all my original vinyl LP from the 70s. Must play my vinyls, I haven’t for years. Especially Bread
I can understand why so many people requested this song. However, if you're really listening to the words, the best song they ever sang was called Aubrey.
Thank you for reacting so well to my favourite song by Bread! If you want to dive deeper into this group, and I would recommend it, I would suggest "Everything I Own"!
I totally understand why the comments section was flooded with requests for "If" to be the next Bread song for you to react to. I think it's their most beautiful song and David Gates singing is incredible. Please react to David Gates most successful solo hit "Goodbye Girl". You will love it.
I'm having a wonderful time this evening listening to you two. Olivia Newton John does this song on the Dean Martin TV show 1972.Dean was very true gentleman. She was to young for him to chase after.
It's funny...when it came out, I really hated it...but over the years I came to enjoy it What happens when you get older. If you want to hear them rock out, listen to "Mother Freedom" and "Let Your Love Go."
Not sure which Bread song(s) you've already reacted to, but please be sure that "Everything I Own" is included. I always thought it was a romantic love song, but recently I found out that it was written as a tribute and expression of love and gratitude to his father. However, I am not sure if his dad lived to hear it.
Ladies you’re reacting to some great classics, Bread was such an awesome group and David Gates has a beautiful voice, I actually need to correct myself and call him a beautiful songwriter and singer
While Bread is most-well-known for their ballads, Bread could rock out. I have the album "The Best of Bread" on vinyl and the first side is full of these beautiful ballads, side 2 has some more rockers. You should listen to "Mother Freedom" for their other sound. Also, the ballad "Everything I Own" was a song to his father who had passed away before writing the song. One of the sadder Bread Ballads is the song "Diary."
Please don't think I have gone off the deep end, but I get a little different feeling with this song. It is lovely, and there are definite romantic passages, but I always have the feeling of this as a memorial; kind of like spending every last moment with a loved one, until the end (or until "one by one the stars would all go out"). Thank you for reacting to this beautiful song. If you are looking for more Bread, "Everything I Own" is one of my favorites. David wrote it as a tribute to his father.
Bread was awesome , along with Barry Manilow , my favorites from the 70's. I would enjoy a Barry Manilow reaction, there is an awesome live performance of "Trying to get the Feeling again" on you tube.
You have opened the door to Bread now lol ! So many songs to listen to . David Gates is an amazing song writer and singer with a golden voice ! He is the male Karen Carpenter in my opinion ! Loving your reactions. Cheers from down under !
I’ll be 65 this year, And am still listening to Bread and all the same music from back in the day. And still own , The Best Of Bread CD .
I am 65 also and I have The Best of Bread album lol
I'm 70 and I have it!
I'm 81 and still have Best of Bread album❤
My wife and I were married in 1975 and this song was sung at our wedding.
Whatever you do, don't listen to this after someone you thought was the love of your life leaves.
I lost my wife 15 summers ago, and this song is one we loved to listen to together......so now I'm all in tears......for the umpteenth zillionth time.
"And when my love for life is running dry, you come and pour yourself on me." Great lyrics!
"Aubrey" is a Bread MUST!!!
I absolutely agree, but I would also like to add that another MUST is the song, "Diary."
@@danielbrooks4474 Absolutely agree
My favorite song by Bread, has to be 'Diary'. You can just feel what the singer is going through. Beautiful ballad.
"Diary" is extremely poignant, especially halfway through when you find out what's really going on. Reactors don't do this one, unfortunately.
Make It With You is in my all-time Top Ten and I bought my first record in London in 1960 :)
Dude, she's banging someone else. He finds out the hardest way possible.
You certainly picked a bad time t ocutit.
Whew, Diary is very good, but how can you beat Everything I Own?

I love that it doesn't follow the common format of verse, chorus, verse, chorus. It is just one long line throughout.

David's songwriting should be mandatory study at music schools.
Such a beautiful song…
Bobbie Gentry - Ode to Billie Joe (1967) Here is a song with many layers that will stick with you through time.
She was Booby Gentry before she got her breast reduction surgery (not really).
Next one needs to be "Diary" by Bread.

He does have a wonderful voice, doesn't he. Great reaction, girls. Their next hit song which came after Make it With You was It Don't Matter To Me.
I love this song! I love the Helen of Troy reference. Nice job ladies! Thanks!!!!
"Everything I Own" by Bread will definitely give you some strong feelings to react to.
Absolutely stunning and beautiful - lyrics, melody, voice. Well done Mr. Gates.
Such a beautiful song!
"If" can live on its own as a love poem. The music gives it an emotional construction to flow into it and with it.
