Iceland volcano: Drone footage captures stunning up-close view of eruption

  • A drone captured stunning close-up shots of lava bubbling in the crater of a volcano on Tuesday that began erupting near Iceland's capital Reykjavik on Friday.
    0:15 The drone operator braved the snow and biked seven kilometres to the volcano which is not accessible by road, and captured lava pouring from the crater, down the side of the volcano, and into a lava field.
    The eruption, which occurred near Fagradalsfjall, a mountain on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland, followed thousands of small earthquakes in recent weeks and was the first on the peninsula since the 12th century.
    Drone operator credit: THE EMPIRE PRODUCTIONS/ICEBIKE ADVENTURES
    Please note: We did not slow down or manipulate the speed of the footage for effect. However, the music was added for your enjoyment.

    Oh my gosh that is the greatest footage of an active volcano I've seen in my whole life. And the reason for this is that this is such a quintessential ideal version of a volcano! It looks exactly like the kind that you would have seen in diagrams at school, in cartoons, or any other kind of media that involves a volcano being depicted with graphics. Specifically, it is the shape of a small mountain that steepens towards the top and has a super active very angry red lava lake that is pouring lava like crazy. It's literally like something from a videogame! Volcanoes are never this perfect and beautiful!! I'm gonna send this to all the kids that I'm connected with and hope they're as excited as I am by this!!

    WOW. I never thought the lava was like a "soup" inside, I thought it was exploding from underneath. This volcano is just too beautiful, completely symmetrical and perfect!

    • @evilcam
      @evilcam 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is due to the chemistry of the magma/lava itself. This is primarily basalt, which is a runny, yet heavy variety of lava (mafic).
      The kinds of volcanoes that explode are typically a totally different kind of magma and lava. They're more felsic, and are a lot more viscous/less runny. They explode because though the lava/magma is not as heavy as these basaltic ones, it's a lot thicker, so it plugs itself up and allows pressure to build. Sorta like if you cover the nozzle of a running garden hose with your finger, and you get a powerful jet from the hose. But with the rhyolitic and andesitic kinds of lava, it would be like plugging a hose that is pushing pressurized toothpaste or honey instead of water, so when the pressure builds, it can really pop off.
      Thankfully, these basaltic volcanoes are not nearly as dangerous, because they're more runny so they're usually not prone to plugging up and exploding.

    Kudos to the videographer, this video made it into the news here in Iceland! It looks UNREAL, like some sort of high class Hollywood animation. An absolut one of a kind masterpiece! And speaking as a fellow Icelandic here, most of us wouldn't DARE to even get close to the active vulcanoes that got lava flowing inside them close to the surface still. I wonder how the authorities let him get so close because usually drones are prohibited in a 5KM radius when a vulcanoe is erupting here and they won't let civilians even NEAR the scene to watch it up close. So this is literally some "once in a lifetime" - footage!
