For those calling this fake because he did not catch fire upon entry, it is because his velocity was not nearly high enough to compress the air in front of him, which is what causes meteorites to generate their fiery shell. This man just fell from the upper atmosphere with a top speed of around 843.6 mph, whereas meteorites can often travel upwards of 90,000 mph with a much greater surface area.

Unbelievably his freefall from 102,000 feet made in 1960 lasted all this time, until 2012. This man should never, ever be forgotten if we are to celebrate these feats. And he did it alone. What a man to have on your team to break the record. Felix is incredible but Joseph was equally so. And such a cool calm dude

The video title was misleading. It's also worth noting that any definition of where space begins has to be somewhat arbitrary since you can still find some air molecules far above the Kármán line at 100 km.
Fun fact: No human being has ever actually been to space. Earths atmosphere extends far beyond the moon. Scientists just picked a spot and agreed that that's where "space" begins...and of course some people question whether we have even been to the moon

So happy to find this video randomly. This was the biggest event I can remember in my life. I recall sitting in my Freshmen English class the day he was supposed to do the jump and it got canceled. I was sneaking my phone under the desk in a dark room (we were watching a movie in class). I was not gonna miss this. I told everyone about how cool it was gonna be. Then the day finally came and I got to watch it at home. It was PHENOMENAL to watch live! To this day, my family still brings up how I wouldn’t shut up about this jump 😂 We had gone to Universal Studios that year and wanted to give fake names to the ET ride. I told them “Felix” cuz it was the only name I could think up at the time. Idk why I was so obsessed with it. Never wanted to be an astronaut or anything. I just knew this would be an historic occasion and it WAS! Thank you Felix for an awesome memory!

@@joshc4998 Terminal velocity is the balance between gravity and drag. Drag depends on the atmosphere. He jumped form the stratosphere (40km), so essentially from space. At this point, the terminal velocity is faster than the speed of sound, because there's not as much drag. But just like any object that falls down from space, at some point the atmosphere and increasing drag slowed him down again. Until he reached the point where he could use the parachute.

That's why this venture was officially known as Red Bull Stratos. Any reference to this jump being from space is incorrect. So just tell everyone again, what makes you think this skydive from a balloon never actually happened?

For me skijumping is crazy as what. I tried to watch this live but as soon as Felix was standing on those small steps I went out for a long walk just hoping Felix is OK. Literally mind-blowing stuff..
I surprised myself. I got through the entire video. I did gasp a little when he initially jumped, but the vertical spin is what I got me. Then again, I used to Ski Jump/Ski Race and I've Sky Dived, but NOT from over 100,000+ feet. I mean, that's INCREDIBLE. 😯
I flew Joe Kittinger on a military “incentive flight” in 2005. I remember briefing him on the ejection seat - only to then remember that he had a whole lot more ejection seat experience than I did! The difference between Joe’s experience with high altitude diving and Felix’s is that with Joe, his diving was with the intent purpose of studying and developing high altitude escape systems for astronauts whereas Felix was merely there to set a record.

I remember watching this live around 11 am or noon when I worked with special needs kids. We ordered pizza and were watching it and I was able to convey to them how cool this was. And they loved it and loved the moment. And I don't know if it was me that said we should pray but I remember we prayed for having the food and being able to share this moment with each other

Saw it live--really the most incredible thing I have ever seen. I am a former skydiver--my brother taught it--and died from it--but still I love the sport, love that Felix did this, and that my brother died doing what he loved.

Gotta remember- The speed of sound is relative to air density. In the extremely thin air of the outer surface of the atmosphere, sound travels much more slowly, so the sound barrier might happen between 150 to 200 mph. At sea level, under standard day conditions, the sound barrier is around 760 mph.
I took a day of from work to watch this happen live. And I remember that day vividly! The hours in the baloon was nice and calm. When the door opened, i got butterflies and eyes glued to the screen. When he jumped I was so exited!!! And when the spinning occurred, I was praying and rooting for Felix. And the loud cheer and screams that came, when he manage to take controll of the spin was pure happiness. Well done to Felox, the whole team and RedBull for making this possible 💙❤ what an achievement!!! 👏 👏 👏
Such an awesome experience to watch this live! I was in college and we had a bunch of people over watching it in my room. Everything changed when that door opened and you could see how high up he really was. Such an awesome video!
I was in college at the time of this. Our professor showed us this and he told us that what we were seeing was unbelievable really. I look back on that and now realize how just unbelievable this truly is.

Agreed. The only reason mankind was able to expand is that many before them took risks that nobody else would. Many call them crazy. As a modern example the Oceangate sub. I 100% would have went on that if offered. I ride a motorcycle every day, I know I could be taken out in a flash and have had many close calls. Saw this live in 2012, and damn, when Felix went into that spin I was standing up and screaming at my screen *_"COME ON FELIX, YOU CAN DO IT! STOP THAT SPIN!"_* and when he finally came out of it I realized my heart had been racing so fast and beating so hard that I had to sit down because I felt like I was gonna faint any second. When he landed I was screaming again, this time out of happiness and pride - even though I don't know Felix at all it felt like I had been with him the entire way down, and I felt so proud of him for making it. It was a *great* experience. Something I'll never forget. And I'm *so* happy that I caught the live broadcast!

I watched this happen live, and it was insane!! Even just watching him made me so nervous, especially when he started spinning like that while free falling. It was crazy, my friends and I all cheered when he landed. Felix is a badass!

i was really fortunate to be able to not only watch it live, but i was able to follow the journey up to the time of the stunt. The documentation of this whole thing was exhilarating from the planning phaeses, to the safe landing. Felix and his team are legends.
Then you are aware that they covered up his passing-out during the spin on the way down. Yeah? I watched it live, and he passed out, you could hear him pass out, and the guy on the radio called to him over and over, they were getting frantic. And then you could hear Felix's breathing change and he woke up and pulled his chute real early because he was freaked out. You can't find the full video anywhere, but they put out a lot of videos claiming to be the FULL VIDEO, when none of them really are.

This was the biggest event I can remember in my life. I recall sitting in my Freshmen English class the day he was supposed to do the jump and it got canceled. I was sneaking my phone under the desk in a dark room (we were watching a movie in class). I was not gonna miss this. I told everyone about how cool it was gonna be.
Then the day finally came and I got to watch it at home. It was PHENOMENAL to watch live! To this day, my family still brings up how I wouldn’t shut up about this jump 😂 We had gone to Universal Studios that year and wanted to give fake names to the ET ride. I told them “Felix” cuz it was the only name I could think up at the time. Idk why I was so obsessed with it. Never wanted to be an astronaut or anything. I just knew this would be an historic occasion and it WAS!

@@joshc4998 Terminal velocity is the balance between gravity and drag. Drag depends on the atmosphere. He jumped form the stratosphere (40km), so essentially from space. At this point, the terminal velocity is faster than the speed of sound, because there's not as much drag. But just like any object that falls down from space, at some point the atmosphere and increasing drag slowed him down again. Until he reached the point where he could use the parachute.
Watching this live was one of the most insane moments I've witnessed in my life. Absolutely astounding feat.

I flew Joe Kittinger on a military “incentive flight” in 2005. I remember briefing him on the ejection seat - only to then remember that he had a whole lot more ejection seat experience than I did!
The difference between Joe’s experience with high altitude diving and Felix’s is that with Joe, his diving was with the intent purpose of studying and developing high altitude escape systems for astronauts whereas Felix was merely there to set a record.

The speed of sound is relative to air density. In the extremely thin air of the outer surface of the atmosphere, sound travels much more slowly, so the sound barrier might happen between 150 to 200 mph. At sea level, under standard day conditions, the sound barrier is around 760 mph.
I took a day of from work to watch this happen live. And I remember that day vividly! The hours in the baloon was nice and calm. When the door opened, i got butterflies and eyes glued to the screen. When he jumped I was so exited!!! And when the spinning occurred, I was praying and rooting for Felix. And the loud cheer and screams that came, when he manage to take controll of the spin was pure happiness.
Well done to Felox, the whole team and RedBull for making this possible 💙❤ what an achievement!!! 👏 👏 👏

I 100% would have went on that if offered. I ride a motorcycle every day, I know I could be taken out in a flash and have had many close calls. Saw this live in 2012, and damn, when Felix went into that spin I was standing up and screaming at my screen *_"COME ON FELIX, YOU CAN DO IT! STOP THAT SPIN!"_* and when he finally came out of it I realized my heart had been racing so fast and beating so hard that I had to sit down because I felt like I was gonna faint any second. When he landed I was screaming again, this time out of happiness and pride - even though I don't know Felix at all it felt like I had been with him the entire way down, and I felt so proud of him for making it. It was a *great* experience. Something I'll never forget. And I'm *so* happy that I caught the live broadcast!

I watched this happen live, and it was insane!! Even just watching him made me so nervous, especially when he started spinning like that while free falling. It was crazy, my friends and I all cheered when he landed. Felix is a badass!

i was really fortunate to be able to not only watch it live, but i was able to follow the journey up to the time of the stunt. The documentation of this whole thing was exhilarating from the planning phaeses, to the safe landing. Felix and his team are legends.
Then you are aware that they covered up his passing-out during the spin on the way down. Yeah? I watched it live, and he passed out, you could hear him pass out, and the guy on the radio called to him over and over, they were getting frantic. And then you could hear Felix's breathing change and he woke up and pulled his chute real early because he was freaked out. You can't find the full video anywhere, but they put out a lot of videos claiming to be the FULL VIDEO, when none of them really are.
