I had the exact same experience with Budget. Lady in front of me was yelling at the manager for not giving her the quality of SUV she felt she deserved. I then commiserated with him about having a rough day while I asked for a small car to get me from Denver to Telluride because our flight had been cancelled. He proceeded to upgrade me to a 4WD FJ Cruiser for the price of a compact car because "there could be snow in the mountains". It was September. I've rented from Budget ever since.
The second rental car story was such a heartbreaking story. For the car. Only had 4 miles on the meter then goes though the toughest customer driven endurance road trip ever. Literally aged it 40 years.
My cousin rented a Pontiac Grand Am with full coverage for 3-4 days. He asked the clerk if he was covered if all he brought back was the steering wheel. Clerk said yes. The car went airborne several times on some back dirt roads with a full load of passengers, a few people had a dance party on the roof and hood, and a case of (cheap) red wine got broken in the trunk (probably from aforementioned airborne activities). The hood and roof were wrinkled and the doors no longer aligned properly. The car was returned successfully, but I don't think they will rent to my cousin ever again.
SuperGoldnut rentals aren't doing well in general though; see ridesharing cutting into their money. They can't afford to lose money on customers as often because they don't have enough normal folks to repay it - that's when the costs really start to suffer since they can't spread it out.
They break into those white vans all the time thinking there are tools in them. I think they broke into every single one of 7 of my vans. One time they even broke in to my newest van, peeled the column, and right when they got it started they looked back and realize the entire van was empty then left....
My wife had a 2000 Mustang V6 Automatic Convertible when we got married. I have never seen a car deteriorate faster. It did survive longer than the one in this story though.

I’m an employee at enterprise and I was surprised that the manager cared so much, I’ve seen people do worse things to cars than he did to that mustang and if they have to damage waiver then we cover it, not a big deal it happens all the time
To be fair, the only thing that was his 'fault' was going down that Trail and not Turning Back SOONER. and once you're in, ur committed. The rest was Happenstance. and Duststorms are weather just like anything else.
The encounter with the lady when he got too small of a truck is a perfect representation of the south. Was in Texas a few weeks on a holiday and never met more kind and decent people. Best holiday ever.
True, but I’d say Texas is it’s own thing not the south. As someone that lives in Texas but it is from Georgia (like this guy and Ed) and north Florida in Jacksonville which is pretty much an extension of Georgia (northern Florida is definitely the south, the southern part of Florida is not)
That's why we RENT, and that's why we sign that little check called "damage waiver" .... When there's (difficult) things to do and (strange) places to go and (weird) loads to haul, who in his right mind would do that in his own car?
Way back in my youth, I watched a 5.0 Mustang GT break traction on an overpass, spin out, take out a light pole and hit the wall twice. Per the owner he picked the car (which now had parts strewn over a good 200 feet) up 4 hours earlier.... some cars are just destined for short rough lives.
At least it made it past its delivery date.. I remember several new cars which I prepared for delivery coming back within hours on a flatbed.. one time my boss actually totalled a car I just finished driving it out of the workshop.. He forgot we replaced the flagpoles out front day before and he managed to hit two of them so hard in reverse the car was a writeoff minutes before it was supposed to be delivered.. customers were already present.
Shit man I could relate, I’ve driven cars with no AC through 110 degree weather, and at that point hot air is just hot air, no matter the speed you’re going, or how much you’re hanging out of window trying to stay cool. NOTHING works, it’s straight up masochistic. So yeah, put quite eloquently!
You don't know heat then. I have driven a car that would over heat in the summer unless you had the heat on high inside. It got extra toasty in there, even with the windows open. The hot outside air was no match for the heated hot air that was inside. Now I have to fix the a/c and windows on the jeep I drive, so all I have is the fan to blow the air into the cabin, except it must be taken the air from the engine because it gets hot if you are not driving.
@@iloverssomutch lol just a couple days ago I drove back from Vegas to OC. Literally 110° no A/C, shirtless, all the windows down 🥵🤣 I wasn't that bad though
guys like me love it when guys like you rent mustangs and have adventures. that mustang didnt get repaired, it went to an insurance auction where someone like me bought it cheap and tricked it out with a custom paint job and some engine mods..... so, thanks for the low mileage mustang bro!
I remember renting a Ford C-Max to move my stuff to a different city. I took the car to the Nürburgring before giving the car back ( it was 1.5hr from where I moved to ) The car was understeering all over the place, underbody sounded like it scraped at Karussell, and those poor winter tyres started to melt after one lap. I didn't know I wasn't allowed to take a rental car to the Ring until afterwards but they didn't find out. Good times.
Dude, you are the most calm, organized story teller I have ever come across. Excellent and funny as hell!!!! I normally don't rent cars but if I ever have too, I will get the LDW no matter what the cost!!
Yeah because most insurance companies cover rentals, so you're paying twice for the same service you already had and were paying for. The only reason you would get it is if your insurance does not cover it, or you're just to lazy to care for all the insurance paperwork if you did get in an accident.
Or if you use certain credit cards, they have insurance for rental cars as long as you rent the car with that card. Just check which card you are using, and their terms to make sure you are covered.
Rental car tip: if you book your rental online and when you get to the desk they ask you if you'd like to upgrade, tell them no. 4 times out of 5 when you get down to the garage/lot, they dont have the car you rented on site, so they upgrade you for free. Turned my corolla rental in phoenix into an SS camaro, in chicago same thing econobox turned into a full sized luxury sedan (think it was a Lincoln) , in newark a compact SUV into a Suburban (which honestly was more inconvenient given the parking availability of where we were staying) and like this story, a compact truck into a full sized econoline van when I helped a buddy move a motorcycle across town. The only time I didnt get a free upgrade was when I went to Aruba.
Wow, you've gotten lucky. I've rented cars countless times over the years, and the only upgrades I've gotten have been from a subcompact to a compact car. Once I even got a downgrade from a luxury I had booked to a compact SUV. It took me a day of calling to finally find a location that had that class, and when I arrived it turned out to be a Toyota Avalon. However, booking online allows you to compare prices among a ton of different locations, companies, and classes, and sometimes you find significant discounts at one location when they are expecting a surplus of vehicles, so you definitely save money that way.
@@tmanepic Same. When I was younger I always remember my mom getting an upgrade from a compact to a mid-size but that's it. I've heard if you wait till later in the day to pick it up then you have a better chance of getting an upgrade because they usually overbook. But you also run the risk of them having no cars at all.
For sure! The wife and I jumped on those cheap $25 Southwest flights back in the 90's. We arrive in Seattle after reserving the CHEAPEST econobox they offered. "Hello Mr. & Mrs. Bike, looks like you have a lot of luggage there. You should upgrade!" NO THANKS! "Sure?" "YES! I don't care if your rental is a THREE wheeler, I want the CHEAP one I reserved!" "Alright then. (Looks at computer...) Oh shucks, Mr. Bike, we're OUT of that model. Would you like to upgrade to the mid-size sedan?" "Is it no charge?" "Of course." "SURE!" Then we walk out to the pick up area and hand the contract to the car delivery person. "Gee Mr. Bike, we're out of that sedan. Would you like a Trooper 4X4 instead?" Is it NO CHARGE?????" "Of course." "SURE!" Double upgrade for nada. Had a blast in and around Seattle in that Trooper for a long weekend. All for the priced of a cheapo. NEVER agree to an upgrade. You'll get it free!
Bulk car purchases on a discount and in house or contracted bulk rate service. They can break even on a car within a year IF people are renting cars. Hertz probably has a highest cost fleet of all the agencies which is why they were the first to go under once travel essentially stopped. A bit sad for me as the Hertz family is connected to mine via marriage way back - not that I had any monetary benefit from the company.
Because, for every 1 customer like him there are thousands more that rent cars and return them with no problems, that pay the insurance fee too. As well as huge discounts they get on fleet vehicle purchases from manufacturers...🤔
LOL As a former Avis employee, I can say your story, while a bit much, is nowhere NEAR the winner on what customers do to rental cars, let alone car guys. But wicked funny for sure!
To the rental agent: "Jesus! You see what god just did to us, man?" Rental agent: "You scurvy shyster bastard! God didn't do that, you did! You big f*ing pig-swine-whore!"
That was a very cute reply. I'm picturing a little old lady with a sweater on. Thinks a Lincoln TC is the biggest car she has ever seen and what in God's name would have that wouldn't fit in the trunk?
I think it's because we are more educated than the average person when it comes to cars. Which makes it harder for the rental companies to swindle you out of more money.
I thought I did once. Rented a brand new Ram extended cab a deer hit the passenger side of my door doing 80 kilometres per hour and no the rental guy did not believe me he thought I was full of crap. I don't even think my parents believed me
My goodness, you have the WORST luck, lol! But I loved these stories! I'm not a car person, though I'll look on TH-cam for assistsnce with diagnosing and fixing small stuff for mine, but I love a good story time and I've now seen two videos here that have provided me with that :) Alas, I need to get my ass in bed but I shall probably find some more on this channel to enjoy during the slow moments of my job tomorrow.
Man, that is what you call an adventure. The mustang damage description had me rolling with laughter. I worked at Hertz as a Neverlost technician and some of the returned vehicles made for some "interesting conversation". Many returned with pieces missing and one returned with a citation indicating that the drives had been tagged at 93mph! BTW, that is how you drive a rental vehicle and why you get the damage waiver. You are a great story teller. Many cold beers to you and yours!
@@TorraTech you can't predict those... But you would be negligent in deciding to drive through them. Normal people will wait for a sandstorm to pass or be finished. You should not drive through them in your own car for the reasons he informed.. Also normal people slow down for wind storms that bring tumble weeds flying onto the roadway. As he explained it. He was trying to dodge them like it was a game and couldn't dodge to fast or he'd loose control. That means he was going the speed limit or more. If he was driving slower (cautiously) he could have avoided them with ease.. I don't believe he set out to trash the rental.. But he certainly didn't treat the car as he would his own......He was in a hurry and said to himself "I don't care about this rental. I checked the box" He is the reason that box costs more and more every time and the price of rentals goes up... The damage and insurance costs for the company get pushed off to the consumers that don't drive like an idiot..

And you'd be surprised how many people rent cars just to go commit crimes. I think the guy at the police impound lot was on a first name basis with us after the first year.
I worked at a Thrifty Car Rental location for years. . . Yeah, lots of stories. Some people weren't even subtle about their intentions with the car. Had a guy once come in demanding a car with 'really tinted windows.' "I don't care what kind of car it is, the windows need to be as dark as possible." Nope, nothing suspicious there.

I’m an employee at enterprise and I was surprised that the manager cared so much, I’ve seen people do worse things to cars than he did to that mustang and if they have to damage waiver then we cover it, not a big deal it happens all the time

The truest statement ever!😝
The encounter with the lady when he got too small of a truck is a perfect representation of the south. Was in Texas a few weeks on a holiday and never met more kind and decent people. Best holiday ever.
Just always remember to be polite. He was polite to her and she went out of her way to help him.
True, but I’d say Texas is it’s own thing not the south. As someone that lives in Texas but it is from Georgia (like this guy and Ed) and north Florida in Jacksonville which is pretty much an extension of Georgia (northern Florida is definitely the south, the southern part of Florida is not)
I worked 10 years in the industry. This happens more than you think. 😂
That's why we RENT, and that's why we sign that little check called "damage waiver" ....
When there's (difficult) things to do and (strange) places to go and (weird) loads to haul, who in his right mind would do that in his own car?
I feel so bad for that car, it's literally a brand new car getting trashed in a couple of days
I would if it wasn't already a piece of junk. Save somebody else the trouble of dealing with it later
*Whistlindiesel has entered the chat
At least it made it past its delivery date.. I remember several new cars which I prepared for delivery coming back within hours on a flatbed.. one time my boss actually totalled a car I just finished driving it out of the workshop..
He forgot we replaced the flagpoles out front day before and he managed to hit two of them so hard in reverse the car was a writeoff minutes before it was supposed to be delivered.. customers were already present.
It happens
"Don't ever do that, it's like driving in a hair drier." That... is a new classic :)
Literally 110° no A/C, shirtless, all the windows down 🥵🤣
I wasn't that bad though
In an airplane there usually isn't AC so climbing to 9000 feet or better the air gets a little cooler.
fishhisy oh wow that’s great information I will just have to put my car on airplane mode

I remember renting a Ford C-Max to move my stuff to a different city. I took the car to the Nürburgring before giving the car back ( it was 1.5hr from where I moved to )
The car was understeering all over the place, underbody sounded like it scraped at Karussell, and those poor winter tyres started to melt after one lap.
I didn't know I wasn't allowed to take a rental car to the Ring until afterwards but they didn't find out.
Good times.

@@Gandalf721 Lol hes a stock genius, that hertz move was peak trading. I wonder if he browses WSB
You never get the Spaghetti without the spice👌 🍝
But he owns a rental company yeah? Lol
This was fun story. Great story telling too. Thank you for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Rented a car in Panama and checked the "box" … a bird hit the window and I still got charged for the window. :(
Do a charge-back. I wouldn’t pay that shit
You probably got liability not the waiver
I don't care if your rental is a THREE wheeler, I want the CHEAP one I reserved!"
"Alright then. (Looks at computer...) Oh shucks, Mr. Bike, we're OUT of that model. Would you like to upgrade to the mid-size sedan?" "Is it no charge?" "Of course." "SURE!"
Then we walk out to the pick up area and hand the contract to the car delivery person. "Gee Mr. Bike, we're out of that sedan. Would you like a Trooper 4X4 instead?" Is it NO CHARGE?????" "Of course." "SURE!"
Double upgrade for nada. Had a blast in and around Seattle in that Trooper for a long weekend. All for the priced of a cheapo.
NEVER agree to an upgrade. You'll get it free!
How can Budget Rent a Car still be around with a customer like Christopher?
Well Hertz almost aint
Insurance
Bulk car purchases on a discount and in house or contracted bulk rate service. They can break even on a car within a year IF people are renting cars. Hertz probably has a highest cost fleet of all the agencies which is why they were the first to go under once travel essentially stopped. A bit sad for me as the Hertz family is connected to mine via marriage way back - not that I had any monetary benefit from the company.
Because most of their customers aren't destroying their rental cars. (also, never buy a former rental car.)
Enlighten us, plz

Well, when he said bike, she was probably thinking of the other kind.
I think it's because we are more educated than the average person when it comes to cars. Which makes it harder for the rental companies to swindle you out of more money.
😂😂I lost it when he said God hates Mustangs 😂😂😂😂
This is the best Christopher Michaels story. Think of it everytime we rent a vehicle for vacation
Do you pay extra for the collision damage waiver?

I thought I did once. Rented a brand new Ram extended cab a deer hit the passenger side of my door doing 80 kilometres per hour and no the rental guy did not believe me he thought I was full of crap. I don't even think my parents believed me

No, if you have a decent travel credit card that covers it for you if you book the rental with it.

I love how he is nonchalantly telling a story of how he trashed a new rental Mustang even though he doesn't trash rental cars on purpose. 🤨
cant predict a sandstorm or tumbleweeds, only thing really he could've avoided was the dirt road lol
Andrew Valadez Exactly! If it was HIS brand new mustang, it wouldn’t have been trashed. He surely wouldn’t have taken it off road.

My buddy and I opened a cheap car rental place in 2010. None of these stories surprise me. That randomest things you can imagine get damaged in ways you'd never think possible. And you'd be surprised how many people rent cars just to go commit crimes. I think the guy at the police impound lot was on a first name basis with us after the first year.
So why rent a car for your crime? Seems like it proves the crime was premeditated, and they're just gonna figure out who rented it from the company.
@@baddest_bitch You got me man. We didn't get the smart criminals at $30 a day rentals.
I worked at a Thrifty Car Rental location for years. . . Yeah, lots of stories. Some people weren't even subtle about their intentions with the car. Nope, nothing suspicious there.
@@normang3668 haha ya seems legit. We used to have a few manual transmission cars, and one day a guy calls and asks if he would be responsible if the clutch went out on it.
