Day 302: The Pursuit of Wisdom - The Bible in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

Fr. Mike concludes the book of Sirach today and encourages us to continue the pursuit of wisdom. In our reading of 2 Maccabees, we see again the pillage of the Temple and we are re- introduced to Judas Maccabeus. Lastly, in Proverbs Fr. Mike encourages us to resist the temptation to rejoice when our enemies fall. Today’s readings are 2 Maccabees 5, Sirach 50-51, and Proverbs 24:17-20.

My son and I love God
Talking of wisdom, everyday on my bus ride to work a mum gets on with a kiddie in a pushchair, and everyday this child asks her mum for a biscuit. With patience and a smile mum says " no we don't eat biscuits for breakfast do we" today it struck me that right here is a bible lesson for me.
This mum is so engaged with her child, always calm, always listening and responding in love, I have a tangible reminder here that out Heavenly Father is always there, always listening, and delights in us, He might refuse me that biscuit too, but this child accepts her mums statement, I too need to employ that grace, spoke to my heart this morning. God bless everyone.
Thank you this was a good one tonight about falling seven times and getting up I've been going through some health challenges and I'm very weak and I just keep up getting up and trying and I was really discouraged tonight so please everybody pray for me this was a good one thank you Father Mike for encouraging me and encouraging us and in Jesus name we pray and please thank you and peace

I have been following this BIAY series- day 302. Thanks Father Mike for walking through the bible with. Thanks for reading with us all the readings, I really appreciate that, because on my own I dont think I can read the bible especially for the books in the OT reading the names is really a big challenge. Thanks for the explanation and comments also that bring the bible passage alive. May God bless you father and all in the team working in the background to putting this series together.

Not rejoicing in someone's fall really hit me. I sort of rejoiced that a daughter of a friend of mine left her boyfriend that she was living with because he was an atheist. So, I said I was sorry that the relationship ended, but at least she could move on and find someone who at least believed in God (they're not a Catholic family). Now I think I get it.
How does that happen, when Father Mike picks thoughts right out of my head. It is so embarrassing before the Lord to have resentment and then not rejoice but to yourself you say "Ha, you are not as good as you thought" Wow there are broken parts in my heart to have these thought and I dislike it so much. Heal it Lord please

After listening to the Bible reading portion, I stopped and read Proverbs 24:17-18 to my 13 year old son because it just struck a chord and was so good. Then when you highlighted it I exclaimed aloud I was so pleased, but THEN you ALSO used one of my favorite words.... schadenfreude!!!!!!!! I don't so much like "taking pleasure in another's misfortune" but I have long loved that German word. I do pronounce it a *little* bit differently. It is a fun word to say and know. God bless you, Father Mike. Today Catholics in our neck of the woods are participating in a day of fasting and prayer for the sake of priests. We also pray for you every night.
When I started with Sirach I thought how this was my favorite book as instructions on doing everything the right way and began with a spirit of repentance and at the same time resentment that we weren't exposed to the OT books. Not either my parents or grandparents fault. They weren't instructed in it either. Then as it went on and was targeting wives, I realized if Fr. Mike wasn't instructing it back then, it probably wouldn't have been good, because of the way Father explained it. It was to his son and it may have not have had the proper explanations back when I was young. So grateful now for BIAY.💖
It is so hard not to be happy when someone you don't like suffers. I really have to work on that. I need to ask God to help me with this.

I still believe the promise. Attacks have been virtually daily, but I look at my list of favorite verses, and find renewal of faith.

Is Sirach 50:27 a prophecy of Jesus?
Is anyone else having trouble remembering all the different names in the Bible? I’m even missing questions on Jeopardy!!
Not to worry. It's alotof info in a short amount of time. I don't think it's about the names but what scripture is saying that's important.

Will you please take a moment and pray with me?
According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory:
Eternal Father,
I offer You the most precious blood
of thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said
throughout the world today,
for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory,
for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the universal Church,
for those in my own home,
and in my family. Amen.
In her account of another vision, St. Faustina describes Purgatory as a "great crowd of suffering souls" undergoing purification. Further, she says that the souls are "praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid" (Diary, 20)
Am I the only one that slowed this down to three-quarter speed? It sounded weird at normal speed.

I know I sound like a legit idiot but I have been having this burning question for days - how did Fr. Mike start this podcast in June 2021, how did it end up like this is only October and we are almost finished 365 days?!??? That is 5 months, equals 365 days!??
Fr Mike started this podcast in January 1 not in June! In June he was already about day 152!!

Jesus the son of Sirach???
The author of Sirach is "Yeshua [Jesus], son of Eleazar, son of Sira” (50:27).
Same name as Jesus [Yeshua] Christ, but a different person who lived earlier.
I didn't realize that the name Yeshua was not an uncommon name in Jewish communities until taking BIAY. 😇
Thank You God for giving us Father Mike to take us through Your Word. His cheerful manner is a joy. We are blessed.
