Honestly this was my favourite royal wedding dress and the fact that it's something borrowed just makes it that much better
and it was used for a state occasion, the state opening of parliament with the crown which makes it an incredibly sincere gesture from the queen that she loves her granddaughter.
I was very confused last night or 2 nights ago when i saw on IG, Princess Beatrice in a wedding dress, her sister, along with Catherine, and Meghan, and we were asked which dress we prefer. Rather unfortunate she got married at such a time. But maybe she wanted it to be lower key as well. The dress fit her perfectly (unlike Meghan's: hers needed some adjustments IMHO) and was mindful towards the fashion industry problems. I expected Catherine to wear something like this for her wedding, but she had a really nice dress as well.

@@gracewenzel There is zero inbreeding in the British Royal Family... The Queen and Prince Philip are cousins but up until fairly recently that was EXTREMELY common. Most common people married cousins because they never left their two bit towns so its not weird in the slightest and certainly not just a royal thing.
I've said it before, I'm amazed that no one has ever raided The Queens closet before!! In her youth she wore some nice, nice stuff!
It probably didn't suit Ann's style, nor Zara! The York girls, particularly Bea looks comfortable in the Queen's clothes at a similar age!

As who studies Art History and well acquainted with terrible restorations, I can say that this dress completely follows what we are taught today: never do anything that can’t be undone.

I agree. that also explains the Ribbon on the hem.. The original dress was designed to be worn with multiple petticoats. Instead of "cutting" the excess material, they simply hemmed the skirt and added a ribbon to hide the wide hem line keeping the original length tucked into the hem.

What I really like about Beatrice's dress is that it feels more like an homage to the original design. Changes were made, but they're respectful to the original integrity of the dress. The big problem with those wedding dress alteration shows is that they treat the original dress like scrap fabric that they pull from to make a completely different dress. If you aren't going to respect the original dress, then why use it as a base for a new dress at all? Why not just start from scratch and make a new dress? Beatrice's dress feels new and entirely hers, while still resembling the original design. Massive respect for the people who altered the dress!
Angela Kelly (the Queen's dressmaker) is super clever and creative. I bet she, the Queen and Beatrice had a lot of fun planning this. I feel that having the original owner being part of and enjoying the alteration process is what makes wearing a family dress touching, really.
I've watched a few of those programs and I have to say some of those dresses needed to go in the bin, ruffles, whoever thought ruffles were a good look needs glasses.
If you watch HGTV, its the exact same thing with houses, tear down everything, but the front facade.
Those shows that do that drive me NUTS. Like some of the dresses are 80’s mega disasters but I’ve seen a couple episodes with beautiful 40’s or 50’s style dresses and it kills me to watch them destroy the original dress, using it like scrap fabric as you said, to create some super modern looking, cookie cutter mess. What’s the point of using a vintage dress, a piece of history, just to destroy any elements of its original design? A girl I knew in college destroyed a 1910’s dress passed down through her family by tearing out the front bodice lace and train lace, only to put it on the UNDERSKIRT of her dress as an “homage”, where no one would even see it. Like, wtf. She was soooo proud of destroying a family heirloom, too; she bragged that her grandma & mom were both heartbroken but she “just knew” everyone would turn their opinion around once they saw her awesome homage. It was a really sad scene to watch.
I'm not advocating for the shows, I've never watched them. However a good reason to use the old dress' fabric instead of new is sustainability. If the old dress was never going to be used again anyway why not use the fabric to create something new instead of letting the fabric go to a landfill or disintegrate in an attic. But for goodness sake that is by no means a alteration. That's a reworking.
I love that she wore her grandmothers dress. Here is a young woman who could have any dress in the world made for her haute couture And decided to wear something from her grandmother. Yes they definitely had to alter the dress because Queen Elizabeth is about 4 1/2 inches shorter than her granddaughter🙂. Skipping the petticoat or crinoline actually helped lower the skirt a little bit, And Beatrix also wore flatter shoes so that the hem would lay properly
I thought so, but then the bubble skirt’s hem should have enough fabric to add length! But it could have been damaged
I think that there was a pattern on the "bubble hem" and it did not come down straight and they needed to do that satin alteration. That is how I would have created the original bubble hem...it needed a pattern and cut to achieve that cloudy look on Q Elisabeth. So you can take it as major alteration, but to make it modern and allow the dress to be wear without petticoat it was needed.
(They may have saved the original hem piece to a chest. I am sure that it could be attached back quite easily and the dress be wearable again with petticoat.)
Also I am not sure if there was necessarily alterations on the bodice. That would been MAJOR alteration and messed up the whole dress+embroidery. Obviously she had the best dress makers in the world and they could have made it happen. It is just, there might not been need for it. Just a different bra/corset. In some of the photos it looks like the same bodice. When the dress is well made it sits well in nearly every body.
So interesting to have alteration well done!!!
my sister is 5 inches taller than our mother and was able to wear her wedding dress by wearing a smaller petticoat instead of the hoop skirt my mother wore. Probably also helped that is was originally my grandmother's dress and she was 3 inches taller than my mother...

She used a vintage “formal” dress of the Queen, it was not originally a “wedding” dress. Love the sleeves, soft, feminine and it is what made it bridal and her own dress.

Depending on the church they used, they may have had to add the sleeves to fit the modesty requirements of the church. Since her grandmother didn’t wear it into a church, the original dress didn’t have to have sleeves.

Ah, no. She didn't wear it to her coronation. You can look up pictures of her coronation and see that it is a very different dress. She wore it to an opening of parliament, but she would not need sleeves for that as Parliament isn't a church.
They were married in a private royal chapel, so I expect she could wear whatever she wanted in terms of sleeves.

There seems to be an unspoken rule of royal wedding dresses needing to have sleeves. That is probably why they are there and may have just been to fulfil an obligation of modesty.

It's because they get married in Westminster Abbey the seat of the (catholic) Anglican church. Ergo, sleeves, as per (catholic) Anglican modesty rules.
@@professionalpainthuffer I can only think of a couple of people who got married at Westminster... Beatrice certainly wasn't one of them. She was married in a private family royal chapel at her own home (Royal Lodge, where Prince Andrew lives)
Weddings in (some) churches require sleeves depending on how conservative it is.

the tiara shape (the long straight "rays") echoes the embroidery details on the dress really nicely! it was a great choice.
I think the satin at the hem is because she’s a bit taller than the queen so the original skirt might have been too short. I really liked the dress, including the sleeves.
It might have also been there to either protect the bottom of the skirt from wear or to disguise the fact that it's already been across the floor a few times already in its history.

I think the reason she added the sleeves is because, traditionally, shoulders should be covered in a church! Considering that I think they’re pretty clever because they don’t really change the overall look they’re just there to serve a purpose...
I love the sleeves! I think I like the dress more with the sleeves than without but it’s absolutely gorgeous regardless.
I love the sleeves. A lot of women do not like their upper arms and wouldn't feel confident going sleeveless. I think you have to have perfectly toned arms to pull off a sleeveless wedding dress.

I wasn't a fan of the sleeves either, but I read that bare shoulders are not appropriate for royal church weddings, so they had to do something.

Alex Bennet it’s like a religious/ sacred space thing. I know tourists are encouraged to carry shawls in India so they can cover their shoulders going into temples...same in Rome.

I like the addition of the sleeves because without them it would've looked like a nice gown but not very *bridal* if you get what I'm saying. The sheer sleeves plus the sheer veil gave it that push.

I love what the York princesses did with their weddings. I have scoliosis and it meant so much for me when Princess Eugenie made a statement with her dress and brought attention to scoliosis. It was terrifying when I was a young girl going through everything and I was imagining other girls (and boys) getting encouragement that this beautiful princess could have the same condition they did. I could go on but I'll leave it at that for now ;) Then with Princess Beatrice, I love how she went back to the family history and brought back the classiness. I'm sure I am wording that wrong and trying to find a better way would be too long I think but basically I have lots of heirlooms both tangible and "cultural" (?) and my family has a lot of traditions that mean more than in other families I think. I can't quite describe it but I love how Princess Beatrice showed respect for her family and history. Also, I love the fact that they waited to release more info and pictures the day of because they didn't want to take away from the investiture of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

I have to admit I do love the puffed sleeves. Am I the only one who finds it interesting/cool that a vintage dress was 'modernized' with a very vintagey-feeling style of sleeve? (Obviously a vintage style from a different era to the original, almost as if someone from the 1930s had adapted a 60s dress. I don't know if that's an accurate description - I am a bit new around here).
I love them, too, especially the detail at the cuff. The detail ties the dress together and makes the sleeves look like they were there to begin with.
Me too! It actually gave it more of a vintage look. I think Bea has a 1940's look about her as if she dropped in from that period, and those styles suit her shape and look. A bit like Catherine, she also suits that era of influence. It's also my favorite era for style!

I thought it was funny that the new puffy sleeves kind of went with the old puffy bubble hem they removed (or hid).
The puffed sleeves remind me of unfortunate 80s dresses, but being sheer softens them. I think they work on this dress.
Exactly!!! Alter without damaging vintage/antique pieces. Respect the art, the time, the craftsmanship, and the love that goes into their making. At an estate sale, I overheard a person thinking out loud about if she should buy large pieces of early New England hand woven cotton (marked as handwoven antique) in pristine condition, to make herself some window curtains. As she turned away, I scooped them all up and purchased them myself in order to save them from being cut, especially into curtains. When I spoke to the estate owner, she confirmed the dates and provenance, as coming from the family of a well-known American’s author. We are stewards of these textiles, and the like-minded person or museum will be the next steward to have them.

@@jenniferschmitzer299 I store it. It’s rolled up instead of folded, in boxes inside a big closet in the hallway, so it’s climate controlled. Yay! Since I also have period dress, in addition to the laces& textiles, I’m full up, no more purchases! Because, in the not too distant future I need to plan, who or where it should go next. Museums, I’ve found cannot be relied on keeping donated or even purchased items, due to reduced or uncertain funding, sigh.

I also understand the concept of 'notions' when it comes to period dress. A hobby I had a few years ago was a medieval thing.. yes.. sca but in Australia. The people I met were passionate about correct historical recreation and I think it rubbed off a little. I ended up with so many metres of voile, linen for inner layers of outer dress, boning, velvet, silk damask, thread.. oh my. thread. I liked gutterman its pretty strong. Swiss aida cloth for blackwork, ummm.. so it takes up space so I just shoved it under my bed.

The dress' hem had to get an addition because she is very much taller than the queen is (and was when she wore it), and that is also why they had to forego the additional pouffy petticoats, as they would have had to add even more satin for the hemline. Under normal circumstances the dress in its original state would have resembled a 1950's style 3/4 length dress for Beatrice. However, as they dropped the hem and then added the Fringe Tiara, it resembled the queen's late 1940's wedding dress' silhouette (more).
I was recently going through some photographs of my great-grandparents with my granny, and she opens a page of wedding pictures. There are five different brides on the page all wearing the same dress! A white velvet 1937-38 long sleeved dress with tiny buttons down the front- apparently all the sisters/ cousins got married in the war period and all shared the dress! It was honestly the most beautiful wedding dress I've seen and made me appreciate what I have now and the fact that you aren't obligated to share such things because times were hard! (I then had a conversation with my granny about Beatrice's dress so it jogged my memory!)
Also was the added strip of satin on the dress because the queen is a tiny woman and the dress was just too short?
@@SandraHarveyDr My grandparents married while serving in WWII. I always wondered about her dress because it was beautiful, but not her style. Turns out, all the ladies in her unit (grandma was a WAC, worked on P-40s!) had pitched in and made a dress that more-or-less fit most of them and anyone who married during that time wore the dress! I wonder who got to keep it?!
My Mother got married right after the war. She wanted to wear a smart suit, which most brides were doing at the time. My Father's sister insisted she wear her wedding dress. New young bride in the family, she didn't stand a chance with my Aunt. My mother also wanted a pearl engagement ring, but my Aunt said no to that as well. She got a lovely simple diamond ring. Years later, my Father was trying to think of a gift for a birthday for my Mother. I suggested a pearl ring, which my Father got. Mom was so pleased.
Just wanted to let you know that your haircut last month made your hair so great for the set curl style you're wearing. I wasn't sure at first about all that thinning but the curls are wicked.

I'm getting married this September, and am having my mothers dress from the 80's altered. She designed it herself and had it custom made, the only thing I'm changing besides having it taken in and shortened, is taking the sleeves from full length to 3/4. :)
This was such a beautiful way to use her Granny’s dress. She needed sleeves because the Royal protocol demands that you don’t show any sexy shoulders in church, lol. So, they could have gone for a simple matte white satin cap sleeve at the least, but I think the puffy sleeves is her style choice.

It isn't just royal protocol. When I was married the reverend told me that my shoulders would have to be covered in church. I had chosen a strapless dress so I had to wear a lace bolero over it until we got to the reception.
So many dresses are strapless now. I kind of love the ones with sleeves. But having the option of a shrug or other wrap would be nice too, especially where I live. The weather will change 14 times during your wedding, so "layer up"!
Out of all the recent royal wedding gowns, hers is 100% my favorite. It's unique, fun, and elegant. I love!
Y'know, I just realize that this the first time I've seen a royal bride in shorter sleeves. the shortest I've seen before this dress are usually a inch below the elbows. It's quite refreshing.
I actually think that the sleeves should have been longer, they would have given the dress a more timeless sillouette

Princess Beatrice's wedding dress is by far my FAVORITE royal wedding dress. It was done so well that I forgot the sleeves were not originally a part of the dress! She chose well. And what a great way to honour her grandmother. ❤

If Her Majesty allowed her to wear the dress and alter it, it means she trusted her granddaughter to keep the integrity of the dress (under the assumption the dress meant something to the Queen) snd Princess Beatrice loves her grandmother and felt such pride wearing it. In the photos, the Queen is beaming and so is Princess Beatrice. 🙃 But even bestowed on her, it is a beautiful way to honour her Grandmother. ☺
Tammy H it is a tradition to wear tiaras from the Crown Jewels. Princess Anne, Beatrice's aunt wore the same tiara.
She looked like a fairy tale princess with her hair and the tiara and the dress and her huge doe eyes. Overall it was a beautiful look on her.

When I watch those Say Yes shows and the bride says how timeless her plunging neck mermaid dress is, I just chuckle to myself. This dress actually seems to be timeless.
Honestly, I woulda 100% worn that dress exactly how Queen Elizabeth wore it, giant bubble hem and all. That style and cut is timeless.
The original look is beautiful, but something had to be done for the height difference between the Queen and the Princess. They did a good job.

I literally DIED with happiness when I saw her dress, the alteration was so well done and she looked amazing in it ! Also, I think they added the sleeves because of the reception in the Anglican Church, I play a lot in them and it is a very clear written rule for women performers.
I love how the design pattern in the dress matches the design pattern in her tiara. It's also important to know that a bride must not have exposed shoulders in the Anglican church during her wedding - hence the cap sleeves. I think she did good job with the cap sleeves and matching jeweled embellishments.
The original hem was probably a lot damaged from touching the ground, and having to be adjusted to the bride height I feel like the satin panel just works perfectly.
The fact that it was also worn in Italy by the Queen, being Edoardo Italian, just adds to the choice.
I do really love the pictures and the dress.

That's because of the combination of her father's scandal and covid-19. But yes, she is an absolutely stunning bride!
It sure is. Which is why I loved this dress as something special that her grandmother, the Queen, allowed her to borrow along with the tiara.
Well, her parents (Prince Andrew and Sara Ferguson) have been vilified by the press, and the firm just would rather not bring any attention to them. Beatrice is better off with a low-key wedding.
I think she’s really not that close to the throne, where as William and Harry are almost directly in line, so they spend more time in the spotlight

I love it - the style, the fit, the preservation of a vintage dress done right, it’s beautiful.
I mean its also a royal dress with state provenance (worn at the state opening of parliament with robes and crown...) so I doubt it was even a remote concept to alter it beyond what was necessary.
I love the dress. I'm glad we're generally going in favor of sleeves on wedding dresses now; for years every bride looked like she was just coming out of the shower wrapped in a towel under her arms. I still love Diana's dress best but Beatrice is a close 2nd!
She added the sleeves because the church requires women’s shoulders to be covered.

I seem to recall that when they announced her name after she was born, that it was meant to be pronounced "Be-AT-tris", but I could be wrong!

I loved the dress the moment I saw it! I actually like the sleeves, they make the dress more demure (for church probably, and also I just like having a short sleeve myself) but keep it light. Princess Beatrice looked absolutely glowing!
As a rule for alterations, I’d say that you can alter it to fit your form, and if you want: add. If you have to deconstruct and reconstruct the thing to wear it how you want, buy a sundress and use that as your base instead.
I like how the sleeves were done. The gown was for a small, day wedding -- I'm not a fan of sleeveless (or worse, strapless) wedding gowns at any time, and to wear it as is at a day wedding would have been out of place.

I love this dress, the beading is so elegant and the alterations so tasteful and classy! I didn’t initially like the sleeves, but after seeing the pictures a few more times they’ve grown on me. So lovely!

The whole thing, from the dress, to the tiara, to the Tudor chapel decorated with a mass of flowers, to the rose-tinted photographs made it look like a Disney princess wedding-in the best possible way.
My favorite part though was their gorgeous smiles. They looked ecstatic. It was so sweet!

It was a generous gift from grandmother to granddaughter. I like it best of all the royal weddings in the past 10 years. The focus was on the bride, not all the pomp and circumstance. Beatrice was a beautiful bride.
Just chiming in that British royalty always wear wedding dresses with sleeves because of church guidelines. Queen Elizabeth could were the original with no sleeves because it was just a gown, not her wedding dress.

As someone who never shows her upper arms, I like the sleeves, but I suppose she could have used a bolero or something instead. This is such a lovely gown, and I think it's a nice tribute to family, from a girl who could have done anything. She chose something elegant instead of flashy.

With regards to the alterations, it's inappropriate to wear something sleeveless in church... whether you're a bride or not...so some sort of sleeve was imperative. She also appears a bit taller than the Queen so no doubt needed the satin strip at the bottom to add a bit of length. Overall, I thought it was a lovely look for her.

The style is so lovely, and I like the satin band at the bottom and the sleeves are pretty and make the dress look more like a wedding dress. (BTW, my wedding dress sheer sleeves, LOL.)
They had to add the sleeves for else she couldn't have used this eveningdress from 1961 in a royal church wedding. The hem was altered because of the lenght of Princess Beatrice...she is much taller than her grandmother. You are right she just left the petticoat at home. The fringe tiara was made in 1901 and given as a present to Queen Mary the great-great grandmother of Beatrice.

Thank you! I keep seeing this dress posted in various "wedding dress shaming" groups because it isn't what the poster would personally wear. Usually they have no idea of the history of this dress or the fact that brides in royal families have a lot less freedom to choose the details of their dresses because they're bound by cultural tradition and public expectation. It's quite beautiful that Princess Beatrice and the Queen worked together to adapt and preserve a piece of history. I love that while you personally don't like the sleeves, you separated your own opinion from the overall context/quality of the alteration.

The puffed sleeves are not my cup of tea, but I still think it's a beautiful dress, and it suits her, and their wedding theme.

The sleeves remind me of a very toned-down butterfly sleeve, part of the traditional Maria Clara dress of the Philippines.
