There are dyslexic people and dysnumeric or anumeric ones who can't figure, but obviously there are dyssewic ones who couldn't sew a straight seam to save their life and wouldn't recognize fabric pucker even if it reached up and tried to choke them. They all found a job at this show. It might even be intentional. A little bit of schadenfreude goes a long way.

Disagree. My grandmothers dress had damage to the bodice but stunning fabric through the huge skirt. Made it into something else. The sentimental value is still there.

My mom recreated her grandmother’s dress (30s evening gown) rather than rework and alter the original. I think it’s the best thing to do. It fit my mom like a glove, was in the color she wanted etc etc originals still intact
yes! i'd never risk reworking a piece of history, especially because there's the chance to destroy it and fuck everything up, and its better to fuck up a replica than the original

A friend of mine work in the entertainment industry and told be about 1920's vintage pieces being tailored to fit a actress for a forgettable show. The lace across the back was destroyed when the actress had to open a bottle of champagne for a scene, and I just can't help but feel like it's more of a waste than a gain.

Since a lot of the dress ended up in the train, I wonder if they could have someone recreate the old dress into a doll size. That way the mother could have her dress back in a way she could display while also destroying the monsteous that dared to use it so poorly.
I would have broke down crying the literally ruined it.

if you like having the integrity of the dress on the floor, she did the job fine

I’m so sad for the mom of the 80s dress. Her heart broke a little when she saw the disaster it had become. Before the neck was unique and elegant and the skirt had som beautiful layers and it was HER BELOVED DRESS and they absolutely decimated it. I’m so worked up and sad.

They could have just fixing the yellowing, I've heard of ppl who've done that. At most I can understand if they had removed the high lace collar, cuz I know that's not really everyone's thing and can be uncomfortable.
The after looked like a dress my Barbie's would wear, not in a good way. The fabric looks so cheap and shiny, it reminds me so much of Barbie's dresses.

That show is the ultimate place to go when you hate your mom and want to punish her for good but also want to destroy your self esteem in the meantime.
The "stylists" there are beyond unfortunate, and the results are amateurish even for a freshman in sewing school... 😔

I saw the episode, and the mother was so bent on recreating *her* glory days, it became all about her. She treated her daughter like a mannequin whose job was to fulfill the mother's dreams of being thin, young and beautiful again. As much as I hated to see them wreck the original gown (which was beautiful), it seemed like poetic justice for an overbearing mother who didn't seem to take her daughter's wishes into account.
I disliked the show Something Borrowed Something New, but I especially hated the episodes where it’s the mother’s dress and not several generation dress. The mothers that would say « I feel in love with that dress » angered me the most. You mean to say that you had the experience of trying dresses and falling in love with one and you are refusing the same to your daughter? And often the daughter don’t have the same shape as the mothers so the dress don’t fit the same, it’s outdated… And yes, destroying dress to the point it’s no longer recognizable instead of adjustments is another level of frustrating.
I know... At first I kinda disagree with Karolina because I thought that the bride could do whatever she wants if the dress is given to her, and that not everyone can display old dresses so it's better if it's remade rather than being kept somewhere without seeing the light of day. But after seeing that clip, it really does feel sad... That dress is so beautiful and elegant, to the point I actually want to wear that kind of dress in my wedding. I can't believe the woman who remade that dress can stand there like she didn't just make it look like a part of a Halloween costume :")
@@reghan7979 -- Her daughter didn't destroy the dress, the designer did--with permission from the mother. No one did anything "petty," least of all the daughter. The mother rolled the dice on the designer, and the designer failed. Not the daughter's fault, not done to spite the mother.

This makes me so happy that my mum was married in a saree. She is 5'1 and was incredibly skinny at the time, while I'm half a foot taller and athletic-curvy. The difference in our sizes makes no difference, the wedding saree fits however your aunties decide to safetypin it. 🤣

You are so lucky. My grandmother turned my mom's wedding saree to be a Pishwas (I think broader India calls it an Anarkali, but it has many names). They thought the seventies style blouse and saree was too skimpy for America. My former mother-in-law's, which had real gold threads, burned in a fire, so I have neither to give my daughter. My ex is very tall, so I don't know that my daughter will fit either my American dress or Lengha.
My mom wouldn’t let me wear a saree and made me purchase a full lehenga. In any case, our clothes are probably the easiest to alter and change with minimal effect to design
I have this reaction when I walk into old houses that have been “remuddled.” If you don’t want to live in a 1920’s house, don’t buy one! They make bad 2020’s houses no matter how many walls you knock down!

I recently bought a house and toured quite a few 1920s houses that they tried to do that to. Why do they think everyone wants everything to be painted white?? You're taking all the warmth out of the room when you do that, and I want my home to feel cozy. We ended up with a 1930s house with all the original wood trim and it's gorgeous, wouldn't change a thing (except maybe the hodgepodge of decades that is the electrical wiring). The kitchen has definitely been updated by a previous owner so it looks modern and is almost certainly better for my needs as someone who cooks a lot, but they took care to choose a color and style that isn't horribly mismatched from the rest of the house and the floor appears to be the original hardwood. And who knows if they were updating from the original kitchen or some previous 1960s reno. Still, I'd love to have seen what it originally looked like!
Sometimes is understandable like some things are broken and need to be fixed and attended to but sometimes they just destroy the pretty things 🥺
@@harmonicaveronica It just breaks my historical fashion-decor spirit when thinking about all those gorgeous late 1800s to 1930s homes that have been destroyed 'in the name of progress.' It's my dream to live in one, and why tf would people 'remodel' into the same generic homes you could get for less? It's so much easier getting a 1980s or 1990s home than it is to tear apart history.

Agreed. I think that is what hurt the most. The dress was so special to her and the hosts and 'seamstress' basically did a 'don't know, don't care' attitude and completely ruined it. They might as well spit in the mom and daughter's faces.
If it had been me I would of immediately stood up, accused them of destroying the dress and then marched out with the dress while planning to sue them. Then I would cry and take it to a real seamstress/tailor to see if they could fix it. It's just horrible.

@@natashalawely2900 The biggest thing is just toning down the sleeves or maybe changing the neckline with different or softer lace. (I can't wear lace unless it's an overlay because it makes me itchy). It's a crying shame what they did to the dress.
I had saved my grandma's gorgeous 1940s wedding gown and my moms Victorian style gown from the 70s and they were both destroyed in a fire. I was devastated. So seeing people destroying gowns on purpose hurts my soul! Wah!
Fires destroy so much! Every time I hear about something like old dresses, papers, books, and pictures being destroyed, it is always fire! People really need to keep important things in fire proof containers!

Exactly. They should call it something old to make it more accurate! There is no “borrowing” happening here. Mothers on that show talk about keeping their dress to hand down to their daughter one day. So just call it something old.

There are these mothers who kept their dresses for multiple generations sometimes, clearly there's a lot of sentimental value here. And one day someone comes and makes a glorified tablecloth out of an xy year old dress. And it's ripped apart, there's no going back. Which is a shame, since in the 80% of the time the bride will choose the new one anyway, so ruining the old was pointless.
They should just use the "idea" or the design of the old dress instead of actually using it. But I guess, that would be too much work.

@@horrorharpy4513 I don't think so much that it would be disrespectful to your grandmother who I'm sure would just be happy for you and happy to provide what she could for you, but it would be rather wasteful and disrespectful to history to completely alter a vintage dress that was never designed to fit you. Like given that there is such a height difference, you'd have to completely change the dress. If your grandmother had stipulated "I want you to wear this some day" then yeah honor your grandmother and do whatever, it's what she wanted. In lieu of that, I agree that it wouldn't be a kind use of the garment.
I like to imagine that this was all staged so that when the bride saw how awful the redesigns were, the showrunners could whip out the original dress and say, now you see how cool the og dress is!

I’ve heard some people will display their mom’s/grandma’s dresses on mannequins at their wedding reception, which I think is cool. It includes them but doesn’t require them to wear the dress if they don’t love the style.
Also, everyone’s already said this, but dang that original 80s dress with the lace neck was beautiful! And they just… no😭

My fiancé mom just give me her dress that also was wear by her mom, so it’s basically a very old old dress.
I’ll love to wear it for mine, but I dont know where to take it as I don’t know anyone that can do the work.
My mother in law does not really care much about the dress as the dress was in a plastic bag and on a corner, but I definitely want to give it a good treatment and give the love that it deserves.

If the "seamstress" who remade those gowns were a doctor, they would have lost their license for malpractice ages ago. They clearly know NOTHING about draping, or fit, or the human body, or how to flatter it. Each of those remade gowns look like cheap crap from a sweatshop.
i don't necessarily agree, the dress with the sky blue detail was prettier in a way and the40s-50s one was also pretty elegant, the thing is they don't compare to the originals and their own vintage style

Did you see how the first one was fiddling with the shoulder straps all the time? You don't have to know anything about sewing to know that this is a clear sing of a dress that doesn't fit properly.
That first "transformation" legitimately made me cry. That poor mother...She just explained how much the dress meant to her and they utterly destroyed it. And that designer so proudly talking about how they just turned it into the train. 😡
The original dress was so pretty it just needed some TLC and accessories.

One of my seamstress friends had a client that wanted to wear her mom's old wedding dress, because her mom died.
The dress was too big, the skirt too short, and the lace was stained and torn to shreds.
What did my friend do?
Took in the dress.
Added a tasteful layer of skirt underneath the short one.
Custom ordered lace that looked exactly like the original version.
Hand dyed that lace with tea to stain it the same color as the original dress because she was NOT about to bleach that thing of beauty.
Voila.
The dress was brought back to near original glory.
Big difference actually giving a shit makes.

The bride with her mom's dress from the 80's seems to regret the choice and I agree. The original dress was so pretty and still fashionable by today's standards. You could tell her mom was trying not to cry when she saw her dress changed so much (ruined) and I hate that these two women couldn't go back on the decision they made because I'm sure neither of them expected for it to end up like it did.
This reminds me of the time my uncle, while planning to propose to his then gf, got a bunch of our family heirloom jewellery and instead of giving her one and getting it resized, he got them all melted down to make a new ring. 🙃 All without the rest of our families knowledge, I might add. My mum was livid when she found out, but there's not much you can do when they're already fucking melted into another ring. Why the FUCK would you take a piece of history and completely alter it beyond recognition when you could just make a new one?

My mom really likes vintage fashion, and found a beautiful 30’s dress for her wedding, but she is really tall so fit oddly. Instead of ruining it, she paid someone to recreate it to fit her. I think that is a great solution if you have the money.

My mom had the same problem. Having a dress tailor made if you don't want something too extravagant can cost you just the same like a wedding dress of the rack (minus the additional cost of having that dress hemmed etc).

My grandmother wore the most beautiful wedding dress in the 60s. It had a huge skirt and a square neckline with Lacey sleeves. It was GORGEOUS.
As I grew up I would always tell my grandmother that I wanted to wear it exactly how it was when I got married. Then my auntie got married. She took the gorgeous huge gown, she asked a seamstress to make it into a flat straight down halter neck dress. Doesn’t even resemble the original dress AT ALL and she only used like 1/8 of the fabric leaving a huge hole in the back of this gorgeous huge poofy skirt and i am grieving that dress to this day

The 80s dress at the beginning looked SO good, why did they destroy it?! Also, you can tell the people doing this show have no idea about wedding gown designing. “It’s yellow!” Yes; a vast majority of wedding dresses has a cream hue to it because if it was actually pristine white people who have pale complexions would look sick and dead in them. This one was *very* yellow, but that happens to clothes when you let them sit for a few decades. And the “modern romantic lace dress” looks 🤮 with that baby blue belt.
I want the name of whoever went all home ec finale sewing project on that dress so I can file a class action law suit against this obvious crime to society.
@Charisma Girl the thing is that the 'pure white gown for the virginal lady' was invented after a Queen was married in white. No one ever married in white before that, for starters because natural white isn't white at all. And in my country, in which the groom would gift the bride a brautiful black velvet mantel (like an open skirt that ties at the back) covered in Polish cristal and jeb stones for their wedding day (and every fine ocasion afterwards), it was still usedup until the 30s (when the dictatorship came and destroyed our culture forever). Nowadays some brides are trying to revive the trend and wear replicas, or take the 'motif' and variate a usual gown with jeb stones, smoked cristals or put black silk accents... The virginity in white stuff could have been a thing to nobles, but most women never went virgin into marriage, so it was ridiculous (and of very bad taste if you ask me) to make an statement out of it. Even Amish girls don't usually marry as virgins 🙄

If you are interested in the mantel topic, there is this blog about ethnic dresses who has an entry dedicated to Galicia (which is my homeland). The most rural areas of the region (in other times a kingdom) wore another kind of mantel, made out of natural black wool with applique in a variety of shapes on the margins to embellish it, but it was not longer in use by XX century (many rural areas were emptied because of the wars, and XIX famine).

My grandmother’s veil was mostly literally rotten, and I had a milliner rescue the lace cap and put it on a fascinator. The milliner knew what she was working with and kept the cap intact when fixing it to the hat.
I was gifted my great grandmothers wedding dress from around the 30-40s (I forget which) and I absolutely refuse to change it at all. It’s a treasure. If my future daughter won’t care for it properly I will be giving it to a museum or fashion historian who will.
It’s like taking a beautiful historic painting off the wall and painting over it because you wanted to use sentimental canvas. Like why?

This is something they used to do in the victorian era! They would take very old paintings, where the face was obviously painted in a different style which they decided was ugly and they would paint over the faces to make them more 'fashionable'! In the end you would have a very beautiful painting stripped of its history. If you watch restoration videos like Baumgartner Restoration you can see the conservator strip back the overpainting and reveal the original face. It's very satisfying.

I feel terrible because I took a (casual) dress, that belonged to my mom in the 90s, to a seamstress so she could make it fit me properly and she pretty much destroyed the top, the material was so damaged, I had to cut the top so I could save the rest and make a skirt. It pains me because I loved it as a dress. Can't even imagine how I would feel if someone transformed my mom's wedding dress into a monstrosity like that.

I never understood this trend of making a big deal on the bride wearing a generational wedding dress. I mean, it's totally fine if it was the bride's dream/idea, but most of them really feel pressured.
I think I see it differently because in my country it's believed that a wedding dress represents the luck of the bride in her marriage, so you shouldn't pass on the dress because every marriage should have their own stars, as it is a new beginning for the couple (also, an old tradition says a married woman should be buried in her wedding dress although I don't think anyone does it anymore, but that's a different story).
Thank you ! This show ran on TLC here and almost every single time, I'd choose the new dress because both the original dress and the remake were just...not my style. Why pressure someone to wear something that she just doesn't like just because it's tradition. As far as I know, the groom is marrying the bride, not her mom.
If I had had a 1940s wedding, I would have loved to have had a copy of my mum's dress. It was a beautiful brown rayon suit, with cotton lace at the neckline. I've always loved it. (She and my da were childhood sweethearts who got married on da's 3 day leave. They were married for 54 years, until he died.
As someone who has worked on the show (as an intern working under one of the background designers) the dress would be rushed and basically glued together to make it on the show so like. yeah. poorly made. And the designer on the show doesnt actually design anything, they paid other designers to do the designing and she just acted it out on the show.

Why would they rush it so much and not take the time to actually do it right?!? For my wedding dress, the manufacturer ran out of the heavy, vintage lace, and sent samples of what lace they had in stock. I hated how cheap those laces looked. The lady I was working with said she had a size 16 she could cut down to my size 6, so two days before the wedding I went and she measured it out, and the VERY NEXT DAY she had a size 6 that looked perfect. She was a very talented seamstress. But it was funny because she was basically cursing the manufacturer the whole time for not being transparent. I guess they had sent her a dress made with the cheaper lace, and she knew the lace was why I had picked that design.
Aggghhhh this hurt me. I really hope you never worked on the show and that this is just nonsense. Because I really hoped the original dresses would be fine and they will only bring out another damn commercial dress claiming it was the same.

They're generally cheap-looking, badly-fitting and worn by people who have no business wearing that style in the first place. Add in the now standard strapless bodice and it's pure vomit in fabric form.
Do not get why they think it would work on their shapes... It would work if a pear shaped body has the right curves, but some wear them... Well, it'll be insulting cause it ain't complimenting... The style is beautiful and cool, but it ain't lovely on some cause it only accented their flaws, not their assets...

I'm tearing up, having these dresses that are precious in historical and personal terms for the mothers get absolutely *ruined* just kills a part of my soul. This show is an absolute nightmare, god I'm in mental anguish.
When they restore old art they always use materials that can be removed without damaging the original piece in case someone decides the original painting has more value, even damaged, and I feel like these dresses should have been treated the same way

I own the wedding dress of my grandma (it's from 1949). Im my case she was the one who altered it and I really wish she didn't. Not only did she shorten it from floor length with a little train to something weird between ankle and mid- calf (which I definitely could fix), but she dyed it BLACK. 🤦♀️😭

This reminds me of when, three years ago, my cousin asked my grandma if she could borrow her wedding dress, from 1960, for her own wedding. My grandma said yes, thinking that my cousin was only gonna make some alternation so it fitted her better. Well, turns out my cousin turned the dress into a skirt and a jacket. My grandma was horrified and heartbroken, specially because she came from a very poor background, but still got a high fashion dress thanks to years and years of hard work

I wore my Grandma's wedding dress from 1958 that had been in her basement for the previous 50 years. The dress is tea length with a full skirt, sweetheart neckline strapless with the sweetest, most delicate lace bolero. I always had a vision of wearing it exactly as it (cleaned and repaired of course) but what I hadn't expected was that the dress required zero alterations to fit me perfectly. Not one stitch had to be added beyond repairs. I like the think the dress knew it was being brought back to life. I totally understand the rage at seeing these mini pieces of history destroyed!

Another reason why I think remaking an 80s or 90s dress as opposed to an older one is because most of the ones from that era are made of polyester and won’t fall apart over time like natural material from older dresses would

100% agree, when we were cleaning out my Grandma’s house we found her wedding dress from the early 50s, Mom had me put it on just to see if the lace sleeves were ripped (they’re fine), and we decided that the dress shall always remain intact. If someone wants to wear it, they need to be Grandma’s RIDICULOUS measurements, cause no scissors shall ever touch it.

My Mum kept her wedding dress in the hopes I'd use it. I actually wanted to and quite liked the 80s design of hers. Alas, I grew to be about 4 dress sizes bigger than her and half a foot taller. I wound up simply pairing her old veil with my new gown to avoid destroying her actual dress. The pairing looked lovely and was a subtle nod to family history.

My head cannon is that they're scamming the brides by taking the mother's beautiful, vintage gown, reselling it to someone who values it, and making her a brand new crappy dress that they convince her has a piece of her mother's dress in it. I feel the same way about people ripping apart old Victorian and Mid-century Modern homes and redoing them cheaply with fixtures that clash horribly with the home's original style. So many antique homes and clothes with unique features and histories have been destroyed by these kinds of people and it makes me so mad.

@@georgie3411 Don't know about other countries, but luckily here in Germany there is a thing called preservation order which prohibits the architectural transformation of the outside of "historical" buildings (like about 60 years upwards). And it does not only affects public buildings but also many residential buildings. Bad luck for someone living in it with the wish to modernise the whole thing, but there are always ways to modernise the inside. But very good luck considering the protection of historical heritage! :) I'm sure there are other countries with similar laws as well...?
@@oromara Ours is more on a case by case basis in Aus, usually only the really old, big houses are protected and it depends on the council. For example where I live, they unfortunately knock down anything to build either apartments or multiple houses on one block.

When I got married, my sister suggested I use some of the lace from under the bust of my mum's hand made (by her) 1970s empire line dress as my 'something old' to wrap around my bouquet (my mum is tiny so the dress wouldn't have fit me!). My parents divorced years ago, so my mum was fine with it. When I got the dress in my hands though, it was amazing. I couldn't do it. I wasn't able to remove any lace without damaging the dress, but they were still all 'do. It!' Luckily I'm not a monster. Especially as my parents had zero money when they got married, and hours of my mum's love went into creating something special for her wedding day. It's an astonishing dress made by a 17 year old girl who had not a penny to her name. Instead, my mum gave me some lace cut offs from when she made a bolero for her wedding to my step-father, and the florist used it beautifully. The dress is now stored alongside my own and no person is ever coming near it with a pair of scissors again. I WILL fight them.

The sad thing is that the original dress was actually really pretty (in my opinion). It wasn't super over the top and the fabric looked nice and flowy, it was overall in a very good condition. The new dress looks like it was made out of wrapping paper.

I got married 8 months ago and I was offered my great grandmothers silk wedding dress and it was so delicate I wouldn't have dared sit down in it for fear of the seams going. when I tried it on the buttons up the back wouldn't close (I'm a natural 34F chest) the waist was too big (I've got a 30 inch waist) and the sleeves were too tight. it was a disaster so I tactfully told my mother that I didn't have the heart to try and alter it and have it ruined when it didn't work out.
So I got a modern dress that looked like vintage fabric (Chi Chi London brand in a style called 'Kerris') in a Bardot style.it looked unique and I got it fitted to my shape professionally and I wasn't afraid of it falling apart or destroying and heirloom that's survived a war or two.
all I could picture was that vintage silk dress that Kate Moss wore that gradually fell apart as her night went on to the point where the skirt was tied up in a knot to the side- devastating
I redesigned my mother-in-law's 1950s dress by adding a lace flounce at the bottom--I am taller than she. I also added another lace flounce at the neck for a Victorian vibe. Both totally removable. Yes, I agree. Don't mess with the history of the dress. Start over with a totally new gown if you cannot respect a family heirloom. My two cents.

A better idea for the show would be taking the old dress, and make a new dress inspired by it. This ways the bride gets a new dress that holds some similarity/familiarity to the old one, but the old dress remains fully intact.

My mother made a beautiful little dresses for my sister's Holy Communion but she was very careful with the material and used as much of it as she could. It was nice because my sister kept that dress for several years before she grew out of it and handed it down.

And also updating them. I drive past an old farmhouse on my way to work; they tore off the attached barn and replaced the peeling painted wooden siding with cheap vinyl, including the really beautiful sunburst above the door. It hurts my soul to look at it now.
I feel this in my soul. I could cry when I see bullshit like that.

My mom's family is rather large and full of people that can sew. I remember when I was little and a bunch of my older cousins started getting married, my grandmother went up to the attic and pulled down one dress. It was rather simple and from the seventies, I think, just a white satin slip with some lace overlay and lace sleeves. That dress ended up being pinned and tucked and let out at least forty times over the course of two decades. One time I even helped my aunt painstakingly remove the sleeves with a pair of small scissors because my cousin couldn't fit them. The sleeves were packed away with the dress after the wedding and sewn back on for the next wedding because the bride wanted sleeves. We only stopped using that dress because the fabric was starting to show obvious wear, so it was packed away in a vacuum-sealed garment bag and my aunt went out to get another rather simple dress from the salvation army. The second dress is the same one still in use in my family even now after seven years, twelve weddings, and with four more weddings being planned. And yes, all four brides want the family dress to be their wedding dress, so we are planning the fittings accordingly.

My mom completely sewed her own wedding dress. Unfortunately it accidentally got ruined but it was SO beautiful that I wish it was still intact so I could wear it someday. I would never change anything about it!
