It looks like perfect pirate or privateer ship. There are likely tens of thousands of 'em mothballed or send to scrap yards. You can convert salon pod into cargo bay for stolen booty, or beef it with more weapons, or couple A-wings or TIEs. If you get a military version, than changes can be limited by installing modern sensors and targeting computers.
Hell i've had this OC I wrote who is a mercenary that uses a modified stealth CR70 as his base of operations. And yes if you convert the salon pod to a hangar you can easily fit a ship in there. Came with the idea that he uses the LAAT/LE. Srsly if you increase the length from 138 meters to a 150 meters like a CR90. You get a perfect ship with enough space for weapons crew and cargo. I wish Lucasfilm would've done something with this ship in the series.
Funny that the Consular-Class was abandoned immediately by the Empire in 19BBY. An Imperial variant of the Charger c70 could have filled a neat support role in early-Empire fleets, alongside the Venator and Arquitens-Class Command Cruisers.
@@seanduffy5877 The Gozanti cruiser did not have turbo lasers, and was about half as long as the c70 and not variant of which I’m aware of the Gozanti has nearly the armament of the C70. I imagine that, since the Gozanti is merely a slightly beefed up freighter, the hull armor and shielding for the C70 we also superior. In addition, the Gozanti actually requires _more_ crew. I think a C70 flanked with two Gozanti (with four TIEs each) would have been a very formidable enforcement and patrol group for the Outer Rim. Even better if the Empire had added a a couple of ARC-170s to this enforcement and patrol group to do recon and other independent missions.
@@jeffreycarman2185 i agree that the c70 was a more effective warship but the empire didnt need the extra hull armor and shields, a pair of gozantis with tie fighters wouldve taken on most threats the empire faced. anything more powerful than that would warrant an arquitens. it was a useful ship in war time but for a peace time empire the niche it filled was no longer necessary.
I get calling this ship a “cruiser” like any civilian vessel that can go interstellar. But as a military vessel, I keep vacillating between corvette and frigate. I can’t think of it as a military cruiser, because I’ve never seen one take on its equivalent enemy, by itself, and stand a fair chance at winning. EDIT: also, it’s never the center or command of its own fleet or flotilla and can’t seem to project power with fighters and troops like the “Star Destroyer” cruisers can. As a corvette, like any other civilian- first design, it can be berthed and serviced everywhere other equivalent civil vessels can be. It also seems to fight best in groups. As a frigate, it’s faster and might have “longer legs” than its direct rivals, making it good for solo duties like picketing, patrolling and raiding, as long as nothing is stronger or faster than itself.
I’m not really sure why it’s called a cruiser, either. Every other ship this size is a corvette. Some sources call it the Republic Frigate, so I guess at least there’s that.
@@RadioFreeCoruscant My best guess is that it's a holdover from how they essentially took what was primarily a civilian/non-military vessel and pressing it into military service. In a civilian/diplomatic setting, calling the Consular-class a cruiser isn't that unusual because its a significantly large, non-military vessel capable of interstellar travel for a purpose that isn't hauling large amounts of freight. When you convert them to the Charger c70 retrofits, it's effectively a stop-gap solution to fill in for the lack of mass production of suitable military corvettes and frigates for the Republic Navy at the outbreak of the Clone Wars. The closest analogues to the Charger's IMO would be the Corellian CR90 corvettes and DP20 frigates that were actually being produced at the same time as the Consular's, but wouldn't really get their time in the limelight until you see them as the image of early Rebel Alliances "large combat vessels".
A Cruiser is/was Always defined by its range. Funny enough, even If er never saw this in Cannon, the Consular class probably would have even an awesome command ship considering its communication capabilitys. The arment Version looks a bit average, but maybe that is it other strength
Ummmm..... is Radio Free Coruscant spying on my SW D&D games? My party just stole a Consular Cruiser 😅. For real though, love your content. Thank you for these amazing videos. Lol they are currently being used by my D&D group to understand their vehicles
That's seriously sweet! I'm jealous. Are you Rebels, pirates, or somebody else? Btw, if you want your DM to hate you, I'd recommend to buy a bunch of proton torpedo tubes and install them all into salon pod.
I have probe droids all across the galaxy, but I don’t believe they have infiltrated your gaming group yet! I’m glad my videos are useful to you, though!
Salon-Pods I wonder what non-diplomatic versions would be, C-70 version Med Bay? Mini-fighter class airlock? Sensor suite? for the SRC likely the Med bay or an Magcon bay room used as a universal airlock?
I’d say a med bay. There should be space aft for one or two fighter docks. I could see the Mandalorians getting one of these and modding the hell out of it!
Would be a beautiful blockade runner or privateer vessel with some turbolasers and single or quad laser cannon mounts installed. Perhaps some tweaking of the sunlight engines and a dock for a miniature escort fighter where the salon pod sits. Many were probably mothballed or sent down to the shipyards at Bracca to be turned into new kitchenware appliances for the countless citizens of the Empire, or sold to mercenary fleets, the Corporate Sector, or Outer Rim planetary defence forces. Many consolar cruisers were modified into the armed Charger C70 variant during the Clone Wars with lasers and turbolasers. Ferrying Jedi Knights, clones and Republican Navy personnel to contested planets fought over in the Clone Wars. With a 3 million credit per ship price tag, a whole fleet of Charger C70s would be a considerable investment for the Republic in the early stages of the Clone Wars when the Republic was no doubt arming ship they could get their hands on to fight the Seperatists.
I would have thought that the Charger C70 would have been about the same length as the CR-20 troop carrier, but the C70 is over twice the length… in any case the C70 is indeed a very underrated ship
3 million credits? That’s some major Coruscant corruption right there. I mean all it’s doing is transporting diplomats. That’s 15 C-ROC Gozanti class cruisers. 4x more space, better armed, faster Or 12 YV-929 Armed freighters. Way more guns and shields. Faster.
It’s another favorite ship of mine from the Clone Wars. And I personally like the Charge C-70 over the original. Also it’s sad we haven’t seen a new variant/upgrade or an iteration of it post Clone Wars in canon.

This ship would be an awesome ship for a roleplay in my opinion
I did suggest it for my group but we went with a smaller ship
One of the other comments said their D&D group recently stole one of these, so you’re not the only one thinking that!
Either this or a Gozanti-class, I suppose, depending on which era you're in

I think the gozanti effectively filled the same role while being more modular allowing it to fill a wider range of duties

Thanks for covering this very underrated and mostly forgotten ship.
Very underused and underappreciated.
Love this ship :)
Maybe it would more accurately described as a frigate or corvette.
It absolutely would! Actually, “Republic Frigate” is one of its official alternate names.
You should try and make a video about the diffrent LAAT models(btw great video)

Why was the Captain of that ship in the beginning of Phantom Menace a Kid? Always wondered that
I’m not sure how old the character is in universe, but her actress was 25 when the scene was filmed, believe it or not.

Wait, how much is the CR90? Or heck, the Sphyrna? Seems simple. Though crew of 9 is ok.
The slightly larger CR90 is 1.2M credits, and the slightly smaller Sphyrna is 1M exactly.
