  • So we took a close look at this newly introduced New Republic Cruiser, and we finally figured out what the purpose of it is. Despite being lightly armed and not that intimidating to look at, this reflects an extremely smart design choice and change in naval policy from the imperial and republic era. Whoever put this ship together understands the fundamental challenges that the New Republic Navy is facing.

    Someone using a jedi code does not mean they are a jedi or even force sensitive. My guess is: the captain assumed someone without any ability to use the force stumbled over that old code and tried to use it in order to swindle the republic. Which (considering how rare trained force users are in that period) probably would have been correct at least 9 out of 10 times. The security detail would have been sufficient to detain any imposters pretending to be jedi.

    • @Dreamfox-df6bg
      @Dreamfox-df6bg ปีที่แล้ว +141

      Considering he was carrying an important prisoner, this security detail wasn't enough.
      That ship could have carried an elite team or be full of regular soldiers. It could fire any weapons, which might be hidden, it has inside his ship or, as mentioned in the video, it could even be a bomb. This could have been anything, from a prank, to someone wanting to free his prisoner to someone who wants her dead.
      He should have
      1. Ignored them and reported this encounter to fleet command
      or
      2. deploy a fighter screen and send a security detail over to check it out while keeping his distance.

      Yes. It also optimizes the continued use of all the fighters the Rebellion had. The total package here is one smallish new build vessel and a slew of probably existing fighters, with the bulk of the personnel carrying on jobs like they had under the Rebellion (or in some cases, the Empire).

    One thing that occurs to me about New Republic demilitarization is that this would be *very* bad for major shipyard systems (Corellia, Kuat, etc.) and the Senate might have had to agree to acquiring new ships or else face a collapse of their shipbuilding industry. But, not wanting to get sucked into the expense black hole of the ISDs and MC-80's, they came up with a smaller design that would have the additional advantage of visually distinguishing the NR fleet from the Imperial fleet. Smaller, friendlier, warships.

    • @granatmof
      @granatmof ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Honestly when you consider the "Light freight" class of starship which are readily weaponizeable, it would really make sense for large Republic vessels to be built around a modular chassis. Strip away the armor and guns and rearrange some bulk heads na interiors space and they can be transporter cargo ships works. It may not be the most robust of war fighters, but for peacekeeping forces, you want cheap efficient systems for exerting pressure, nit overt miliary action. The more a particular frame is produced, the cheaper it is to build and maintain.

      Lol "smaller friendlier warships". I can actually hear them pitching it that way.
      Agreed about the Shipyards, the NR would have had to always plan to keep them grooving along for the noted and many other reasons.
      Switching to smaller, lighter (and friendlier) ships would be a win for everyone.
      The yards get many more fast, simple builds, improving ease of construction, dock availability, plus a smaller but much steadier income stream. (Smaller paycheck everyday, vs one big one a year)
      The NR gets all the good stuff noted here and in the vid.

      @granatmof I get where you're coming from on this, but even trying to be "demilitirized" they would have to keep a first tier response available.
      I'm kinda thinking of the whole yhevetha story arc. The folks who are going to get thrown into the blender are going to demand some kind of professional option. But the politicians are going to try to keep it as small as possible to try to stay on message. So a big fleet of small ships is a good compromise.
      Though the modular idea would be great to pitch to systems etc. They could have a standing fleet of ships that could swing between coast guard, q ship, and in downtime and emergency be turned into liberty/relief ships.
      Plus the yards would no doubt be happy to sell a "mini-refit" station to help switch modes. Always gotta upsell lol

      It's not a question of trust but a doctrine and intended use - TIE fighter is a very capable craft despite how they show in movies. Yes they do lack shields but shields are not a game changer on starfighter in SW universe - x-wing's shields can hold for 1-2 seconds under fire from a single TIE fighter. Shields do provide a better survivability but only against light flack or random shots.
      You should also consider that after end of clone wars there were no manor armed conflicts of such scale for several generations. Rebellion posed a terrorist treat and was not easy to find, but not an enemy in direct confrontation.
      99% of empire navy have never seen a single rebel and were doing patrol, peace keeping and anti-piracy activities in millions of worlds across the galaxy. In most anything more than a TIE was just an overkill and as result just wase of money for empire.
      And empire added more capable crafts as rebellion treat increased. TIEi, TIEa, TIE defender and many more. Most of them were plain better than rebel alternatives in each and any aspect

    I can totally see the New Republic going from a battle hardened military power to a limp one. Most of Europe quickly made that transformation after the end of the cold war. The military was cut down in manpower, material and training. Old personnel and leaders either adapted or were replaced. The doctrine was changed from being ready for battle to just maintaining the little force that remained, representative and policing duties.

    • @TheTrueAdept
      @TheTrueAdept ปีที่แล้ว +39

      The biggest reason for that is the 'End of History' memetic hazard that showed up during the '90s. In addition to that, there was no real reason (at the time) to keep Cold War-level military budgets. The thing is that military budgets tend to be economically reductive, not economically productive, especially when the Big Bad it was aimed at vanishes to the either.

      But even in Contemporary Europe it took decades of declining budgets and contentious procurement programs that resulted in no new weapon systems. It was only when a threat appeared that everyone realized how unprepared they had become. However Western Europe or NATO Europe would be more akin to system defense fleets in Star Wars. They're not really intended for global or galactic force projection, just regional projection. Europe is backed by the US much like local systems should be backed by the New Republic. The New Republic should be focused on sector security systems and equiping local systems to be able to hold off for so long before Reinforcements arrive. Essentially democratizing the military.
      And usi g the US as an example, there's numerous military bases across the US which have no military influence with local cities. Having clear distinctions that military cannot be used to enforce civilian law is a very clear step that the New Republic Lacks.

      I honestly feel like this ship could take a lone star destroyer. Not by itself, but in conjunction with its fighter compliment. The Rebel Alliance built their naval tactics around their starfighters. It was out of necessity due to their lack of capital ships, but it made them very good at taking down very large targets with well-coordinated starfighter attacks. This cruiser has multiple hangers, so probably has 3 or 4 starfighter squadrons on board. Deploy them against the star destroyer while the ship itself lays down covering fire and draws the fire of the star destroyer away from the fighters.

      No.
      A VSD alone has the power to 1v1 this ship. This kind of fight is what a Star Destroyer is built for. Standing its ground and slugging it out with an equal. Making itself 'bait' won't work because this is the kind of target a VSD or even an ISD would eagerly chew up and spit out.
      Not to mention and VSD would be able to easily match the NR fighter compliment with an equal number of TIEs to screen the VSD while it goes after the 'bait' ship. An ISD would be able to almost double up on them.
      So unless this thing is bristling with enough guns that it would go against the NR's 'more peaceful friendlier' doctrine, it will NOT win in a fight against a lone Star Destroyer.
      It would actually require them to gang up on a lone Star Destroyer and at least a fourth of each of their fighter compliment would have be Y-wing bombers.
      This ship as described is the NR's version of a Quasar Light Carrier. It has no business attacking anything heavier than a heavy frigate. A category that both Victory and certainly Imperial Class Star Destroyers fall WELL outside of.

The 2 dark jedi are said to have killed half the security detail when they exited the hangar, which suggests that there were only a couple dozen troopers on board. When you account for the fact that there were few other personnel but guards, it seems that these cruisers have very small crew sizes, probably more akin to a fairly large corvette like the CR-90s then a Nebulon cruiser.

    That's the Home One. I know it currently says 1300 meters, but back in the day it was considered to be longer than a Star Destroyer, being the rebel flagship. In return of the Jedi, as the fighters and craft fly past it before it jumps to hyperspace it was demonstrably longer than any other Rebel ship in the fleet that fought at Endor. That aside, lets accept that it is 1300 meters, the new ships don't look 1/3rd, they look about 1/2. Perspective matters. That makes them about 600m.

    2:15 To be fair the Rebels heavily relied on special forces to win their battles, their actual foot soldiers were crap. Most of the troops we see in action during the movies have some sort of special status among the Rebels for different reasons, whether it be the Marines in Rogue One, Alderaanian royal guards in episode 4, rebel special forces in episode 5 and the pathfinders in episode 6 and in Rogue One.
    I am surprised we are still seeing many Mon Calamari in the fleet considering that they create a home defence fleet during this period. In fact that could explain the creation of these new hybrid cruisers, because the Mon Calamari are probably busy reorganising their own star cruisers and are probably still in the early stages of designing larger vessels we see in the Sequels, so they have provided a temporary design to keep the peace.

I'm not sure which channel explained the usefulness if the hammerhead, but in doing so it makes sense.

    I know it was just an off-hand comment. However, I feel it made sense that the Empire concentrated its resources on big vessels like Star Destroyers since it ruled more through intimidation. Its focus was on keeping potentially rebellious planets pacified, as opposed to maintaining security against pirates and smugglers. There is a certain prestige and threat from seeing a single Star Destroyer, that isn't quite the same as seeing a few frigates. Sure, it can only be in a fewer places but like I said - the Empire ruled by intimidation. Knowing that the Empire has them and could bring one into your sector if it chose to, was sufficient.

    I’m hoping that that gap in the main hull between the main parts of the ship and the engines is a modular area for freight containers or personnel transport modules, hospital modules,or external racks for quick-deployable fighters (sort of like the Gozanti-class cruisers and the TIE racks). If that’s what these are, this medium or light cruiser could actually be the ideal ship for peace keeping and patrol.

    I like this ship if it is what you think it is. A true space based carrier utilizing the fighters of the new republic. With the ships the new republic has, you can create a carrier task force, which here on Earth are for force projection. Lacking a massive navy like the Empire a task force would be a great solution. Even if the ship is on its own there is a great solution to show force without even putting the ship at risk. The cruiser sits way outside the AO. Snub Fighters are sent out and use their own hyperdrive to reach the target. They do what they do and can use their hyperdrives to the cruiser. The pilots get to relax, their ships get repaired, and the whole cruiser can reposition to wherever it needs to be. If you think about it, this could be better then the empires force projection.
    Imagine for a moment you see a star destroyer over head. The empire is here and always watching. You know that.
    Now imagine you are about to commit a crime and three X wings just come out of hyper space. No warning they were coming. You never know when the new republic will ever show up. But they will come out of no where.

    They likely are good at being a mobile network of portable fighter space stations in a manner, they just bring in 3 or so in 3 single jump distance triangle, and the fighters can jump from any one of them, and then jump to another system, then back to a system with a carrier, safely making it a 3 jump rotating patrol that covers a dozen systems. So instead of the empire needing at least 12 SD class for mot rebel uprising sectiors, you have 3 of these doing the same amount of peace time work.

    She's more of a support ship than an actual fighting ship behind cover for allies to attack an enemy ship while MC30 launches its volley of torpedoes toward a ship's hardpoints. Have about maybe 20 of them... you will destroy maybe a small to medium defense force and a space station in one shot.
    Edit: Speaking of hangers in ships... I highly prefer a nice compliment of carriers and Venator class Star Destroyers. Maybe the Revenge class Heavy Carrier... just a thought

      @@JeroGoldfinger like dude one look on the video picture it took me a bit to realize that it was none other than that frigate found in Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption expansion.
      A puny ship like that can easily be crippled by bombers destroying its dual torpedo launchers and engines. Laser cannon for extra credit to put it out of action.

    I think the New Republic “Soldiers” were so incompetent because they were from more of the core worlds compared to the soldiers of the Rebellion who many came from the Outer Rim.

    I still think the venator is both the best War and peace time ship, a basic patrol fleet of one ventator and 2 escorts could easily patrol a large number of systems with ease, it carries plenty of supplies for aid relief and huge numbers of fighters and with more modern new Republic weapons it would be more than able to take on larger pirate ships or remnant imperials or even newer threats
