I watch a lot of these list, and yours is one that isn't biased for hero ships and well thought out. @@GiantFreakinRobotyou say galaxy was designed to do things a soveriegn can't, but never tell us what those things are. Smh this list is crap you could take a constitution class weld 20 or 30 torpedo launchers on it then load up the shuttle bay with generators to power torpedo launchers and its game over for any opposing ship
Point of order "many galaxy class ships were lost during the dominion war". We didn't see that onscreen. In fact we saw precisely one destroyed during the war. The Oddysey might be a debatable point but it was long before formal hostilities.
You would have thought with all of the possible threats in the Universe including the Romulans and Klingons, Starfleet would have built an actual Warship designed for nothing more than to defend/destroy objectives. Their one serious attempt was the flawed Defiant Class which they scrapped after only a few prototypes. Literally every other race in the Universe had ships designed specifically for war, even the friggin' Ferengi had Warships for God's sake. Given that, there were all of these races involved with Starfleet but yet, Starfleet was commonly getting outclassed in both shields and firepower by the Klingons and the Romulans. With all of the different races of people in Starfleet, they should have been the most powerful in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, hands down. To be honest, while the Klingons had great armament on their ships, their shields were their Achilles heal. But the Romulans had the best shields and armament on their ships. If the Romulans were as war-like as the Klingons, the Romulans would have controlled the entire Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Someone needs to come in and really "clean up" the canon timelines of both Star Trek Universes. They are both a mess and with the Discovery, that surely didn't help them at all lol.
The excelsior looks like a min van to me. I never could shake that impression and it has made me dislike it. The back deck around the shuttle bay is elongated and gives me that impression. i am surprised having watched the whole video that Defient Class wasnt in there as a power house.. it literally is a Starfleet Warship (unofficially) its actual class is an Escort ship. but was the first war ship starfleet put into service to combat the borg. with its over charges warp core and pulse phasers (that remind me of ED209 from RoboCop when fired) thats one TOUGH little ship.. certainly one of the most powerful for its era
@@Albee213 Simply put, Sisko bundled his crew into a ship that wasn't ready to be operated at full power. He essentially paraded the best warship Starfleet had, that couldn't fight to it's full potential because O'Brian hadn't had the time to shake it down in a shakedown cruise and fix all the problems... like the solution Sisko mentioned to the mirror universe O'Brian on how they stopped the ship shaking itself apart when run to full power. Personally, I think Sisko just wanted the ship he had a hand in designing out of Mothballs so it could be put through it's paces and hoped he wouldn't actually need to fight with it.
Defiant was massively overpowered for it's size, and had cool guns and armor. The first time they took that out on DS9, the paint over the NX designation was barely dry and they had to deal with a romulan working the cloak button. I still like the sovereign, needs the cool ablative armor future Janeway bright back, and a cleaning device.......I still don't know why that's such a big deal...
The Klingon Bird of Prey is the R2-D2 of the Star Trek universe: Always there, defying expectations, with plot armor so thick it even prevents aging. I was half expecting one to take out USS Discovery during the finale.
There have been many different Klingon birds of prey over the years: M'Chla class, K'vort-class, B'rel-class, D12 class & Class 5 (pressumably there would be a class 1 to 4 as well?) It would be more accurate to say that the bird of prey is a type of ship; a Corvette for example.
@@AccesslessExactly. They made scout class vessels in the BOP design that held only a dozen officers and men as well as larger battle ship size versions carrying much larger crew compliments. Basically an order to size type ship.( Interestingly enough, the Bird of prey in ST3 was originally a Romulan ship that the Klingons stole. Hence, the green color and bird on the underside, until the script just changed it to a Klingon vessel)
@GiantFreakinRobot I understand but I believe that the temporal war did happend as per discovery and enterprise and being it was on screen I would take that as canon
I think the appropriate line would be The Odyssey was the largest ship starfleet had produced up to that point. Not counting ships from the Kelvin Timeline (The Vengeance dwarfs an Odyssey) or from other non canon sources like Star Trek online. The Odyssey is the biggest seen on screen. Technically we only see the J's interior on Enterprise with a ship schematic on a bulkhead. We can infer how big it is but it's not directly shown. In STO, the J or Universe class is the biggest, even bigger than Vengeance.
I was going too make this comment but i figured the comments would be mostly yes. I however love the J and still hope too just see it on screen again. Till then Il just accidentally use it in missions and block all the cutscenes in STO then apologize when i realize im using the J
🎉I hate to nit pick...but i think you are confusing the 23rd century with the 2300's and the 24th century with the 2400's. The excelsior was launched in the late 23rd century, or the late 2200's. The ones launched in the 24th century would be launched in the 2300's. This was a great video though! ❤

To be fair, it was a one off vessel that only popped again when Voyager found its way home? It's got alot of reason to be on the list... But the lack of accolades in comparison to the other ships in Alpha and Beta canon make it an honourable mention. More data is required to flesh out it's strengths and weaknesses.
Defiant : size matters not!!! Judge me by my size do you, hmmm?😂 It nearly tore itself apart in drills when engines were brought up to full power She may have flaws but she has teeth
@@GiantFreakinRobotthe defiant crew specifically said that if they didn't stop they would destroy the Lakota. The Lakota was trying to disable them from the start and barely survived. The Defiant was just trying to get by.
Both vessels refused to use quantum torpedos because they refused to absolutely destroy the other. But yeah the Lakota upgrades surprised the Defiant for sure.
@samuelowens3853 actually I think the Lakota was more surprised about the defiant having ablation armor too. Captain Benzine was pissed lol. But yes, both captain refused and that is what really made love that episode
One other thought - not openly discussed outside fan circles, is the idea of blocks. Not all Excelsiors were the same; refits + block enhancements. Good discussion though - thank you!
The video was entertaining. But afterwards I’m left there thinking “wtf did I just watch? A video ranking pretend spaceships based on their actions in a TV show…”
Why do you think there's more worthwhile things to be doing? the sun will swollow the earth, the universe wlll die a heat death. Just accept that it's enough to be happy and learn to play the harp.
In that Excelsior class vs. Defiant battle, the Defiant did not go into the battle seeking to destroy the other ship. If Worf decided to wage an all-out, balls to the wall fight from the onset of that battle, the Lakota would have been space debris.
Neither did the Lakota. Nothing were pulling their punches, so pointing out that Defiant was without stating tbe same for Lakota is frankly dishonest. Feact of the matter is that both were quite capable of destroying the other.
@@bairdrew I have to disagree. The Lakota fired four times before the Defiant fought back. Worf never went into that battle thinking that he would have to fight the Lakota. I just watched the clip again. Neither ship used their full compliment of weapons though, to be fair. That much is clear.
@majorsynthqed7374 for some reason autocorrect changed "both" to "nothing" which quite drastically changes what I was saying in that sentence. Basically I agree that neither ship was trying particularly hard to defeat the other.
To answer this question, I think you could use a game that features as many of these ships as possible, equip them with the same or similar gear, and then test them against similar targets -- that is, if your focus is on military might, which Starfleet mostly was not. They had ships focused on exploration, science, patrol, diplomacy, defense, and projecting an image of power and strength, especially in the post-Wolf 359 era. You also have to contend with the fact that we have few or no canon feats for many Starfleet vessels, including the Universe- and Odyssey classes. Starfleet ships later specialized in specific fields and endeavours, so they would be great at one thing, and not great at others. And then there are the outliers among their class, which were different because of what they had gone through. _USS Excelsior_ was different from other Excelsiors of her time, and completely different from _USS Lakota_ or an Excelsior-II. _USS Voyager_ was a completely different ship when she returned to Earth than the standard Intrepid-class she started as. 'Power' differs based on what it is the ship is doing. Then there's the equipment installed. Warp drives, nacelles, power management systems, computers were all completely different in the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th centuries. Starfleet was comparatively outmoded until the later Ambassador or Narendra-classes. And the computers got overhauled again in the Intrepid's age. Starfleet's design doctrine also changed depending on what they needed, and what they had been through. The Connie and Sovereign were designed for different goals, yet the Sovy still refers back to the Connie in some ways. And again, if you give various ships the same level of tech for their equipment, you're going to find less differences in their performances. Only their unique points would let you tell them apart. Games like _STO_ let you choose your ship without any specific requirements because only their traits and special abilities are different. You can play all the missions and beat them with any of them.
@@GiantFreakinRobot Well, you still can. It's more than time they updated the engine, though. Summer event is on. You can get a T6 ship from there if you're fast.
One of the few videos of this kind that I watched all the way through, seems well researched. The Excelsior class is my favourite design so I may be a tad biased, though it's tough to deny how long it's been in service and how good it's been.
@@GiantFreakinRobot I don't think it's fair to say the refit Constitution could barely defeat the Miranda. The Enterprise got hit with its shields down. It wasn't a fair fight.
How could you not include the Defiant class and put an entry onto this list twice? Defiant isn't a battleship but it could engage dedicated warships many times its size and/or while severely outnumbered.
The Defiant was strong and tough for it's size but the video is about the deadliest ships. In the regard the Defiant was limited, it's weaponry whilst powerful against ships of a similar size don't have the same destructive capabilities as weapons found on bigger ships that have room for bigger cannon emplacements and larger power plants to use them. Think of it in terms of a naval destroyer vs a battleship, the bigger the ship the bigger the guns.
I think his choice to leave it out makes some sense, yes the defiant is an amazing vessel, but it is highly focused for combat. He was touching on overall performance. That said it should atleast gained an honorable mention as it was at every phase of the battle for earth in First Contact!
@@matthewcaskey1051 Also technically the Defiant is classed as an escort ship. it would be considered a Destroyer or Frigate by modern navy standards. The Intrepid and probably Constitution Class would be Cruisers while the Soveriegn Class, Galaxy Glass, Excelsior and other ships of that size would be Battleships and the centerpeice of a strike force (since Star Trek does not seem to employ Carriers the way most other Sci-Shows like Babylon 5, Star Wars Stargate, or BSG do)
@MrMalve25 they do! Look up the Midway class, they do have fighters and they were even used during the show, think peregrine is the name of them? Something like that.

Discovery is so massively OP, in the show they have it single handedly responsible for winning the war with the Klingons. After jumping 800 years into the future, it is still OP, and the future federation reverse engineered it to improve their fleet. I believe Discovery so so massively over powered it ruined continuity.
@@rodneytrotter3725 Strange New Worlds, Academy, and Philippa Georgiou's future Section 31 movie are all spin offs from Discovery. It really sucks, but the show runners appear to consider it canon.
Sorry, as far as what ship people think about when they think of Star Trek, I think of the Constitution Class. You have to remember Star Trek has been around for a very long time now, people think of the ship they grew up with over the current trend. I think it has to do with the ship that got them involved in Star Trek in the first place. Great Video, thank you for sharing.
Probably get attacked for bringing up the reboots but the scimitar on Star Trek 2 into darkness was pretty badass .. it was larger faster and had more firepower, could fire while in warp .. I really wanted to see that large disrupter lazer fire 🔥 even if that meant the enterprise got blown up
I 100 % agree with you .. i don't care what people think of the reboot Scimtar was a beast and yes I too soooo wanted to see that huge disrupter get fired
The battles between Enterprise the Reliant and the Bird of Prey in Trekk II and III are not good examples. The Reliant didnt out gun the Enterprise, it fired on a ship that was not in a battle preparation and with a training crew and the Bird of Prey was fighting a severely handicapped Enterprise. A Bird of Prey has no chance against The Enterprise in a head to head battle.
You are right, especially because the original version of the Constitution calss was built during the Four Years War, and with the intent ( I donìt know if succeded), of building a Starship capable of out performing a Klingon D7 Battlecruiser under every aspect; so a Klingon Bird of Prey would have just been reduced to space junk if matched against a Constituition class in top condition, against a Constitution Refit would have probably just turned tail and run as to live to fight another day (usually Klingons try to avoid a dishonorable death, in order to avoid ending in Gre'thor)
I’d say the Ambassador started building in the mid 2320s. Figure 40 years between the launch of the major multi mission flagship classes : 2245 - Constitution 2285 - Excelsior 2325 - Ambassador 2360 - Galaxy 2400 - Odyssey
Captain Erika Benteen was not an inexperienced captain when the Lokata was sent to stop the Defiant. She was a newly commissioned captain but was a highly skilled officer.
You should see Ashtar Command presently 72,000 miles in orbit around the Earth. Its the size of a small city. Its coming a lot closer in Phase 3 and will drop its cloak in early 2025. We will start to see the scout ships soon. I can't wait 😊
Another way to look at the rankings, which ship would you want to command? I would take the Enterprise D Galaxy, B Excelsior, A Constitution (Refit), Nebula, Sovereign, Intrepid, Ambassador, Miranda in that order. Just due to accommodations, abilities, general usefulness, and personal bias. I grew up with ToS movies (watched in the theatres) but the Galaxy was just a beast when it was premiered. (Not going to lie, the holodecks are a feature that cant be ignored lol) Seeing the Enterprise D brought back by Jordi in Picard season 3 damn near brought a tear to my eye seeing the old girl back in the fray.
Think some conclusions weren't entirely based on accuracy. The Lakota was specifically upgraded and O'Brien's reaction inferred that this not not your typical Excelsior. The Defiant also falls in to this trap in the same episode having modifications that weren't known to Starfleet, however, there was only one ship of it's type so we don't know what a typical Defiant class would have. Pretty much every thing else made sense but you did slip up a few times.
No disrespect to anyone who likes the Odyssey class but I personally have never been a fan of the design. I rather prefer the sleek and sexy design of the Sovereign, whereas the the 1701-F feels like a huge slow whale by comparison.
@@GiantFreakinRobot Oh I definitely understand that. Aesthetically speaking, for me personally I will always like the look of the refit Constitution and the Sovereign. For those folks that do like the design of the F, honestly, good for them. Glad they enjoy it.
Great video, as are the rest of them. Question, am I right in interpreting you are only including production ships within the original timeline? The USS Vengeance would surely be included even though it had a very short lifespan!
You really give the Connie a worf effect you know? The point is she IS that powerful, but gets crippled every time, so ingenuity using what’s left is what drives the story, and helps prevent ridiculous power creep like what happened in Star Trek Nemesis. Honestly I feel it forces better stories since it’s more about outfoxing the enemy using intelligent and combined tactics of the crew working together, then just more Dakka.
Funny thing is that by the time the Connie Refit was finally put out to pasture *for the most part*, Starfleet was balls deep into the Excelsior class and was debuting the Excelsior Refit with the Enterprise-B (remember that the TOS side of Star Trek Generations wasn't too far off after Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country). It makes you wonder: now that we retroactively know about the refit version that was the Enterprise-B, how many other Excelsior Refits were there by the time of the Ambassador class or even the TNG Era compared to regular vanilla Excelsiors?? 🤔🤔🤔
I wasnt aware the Ambassador's career was that short. But i kinda figured the excelsior would win out here it fits the saying "She's old, but she'll hold" really well.
You bunch of Geeks. The most powerful Star Trek Ship ever was, of course, USS Voyager under the Command of Janeway. Think about it. That's all I'm saying.
The only ship to trump several borg vessels and then say we need a bigger bad guy lol. In all seriousness though that series was terrible and I loved every moment of it XD
Hmm I'm not sure. USS Defiant under Worf, it's a bloody fast ship (far faster at warp than anything else), is all guns and ammo, and has Worf commanding. Designed purely to defeat the Borg. I'm going with the Defiant.
Whoa..that Excelcior would have been wiped out without the tracking torpedo Spock sent, too. Yet somehow it survived to the picard era. In the battles mentioned Enterprise refit wasn't just 'undermanded'. It had no crew at all, with half its main power out. The first hit came with shields down.
The constitution class starship was vicious with the M5 computer tie in. Then again, any starship would have been invincible with the M5... until they met the Borg. But, maybe the M5 could beat the Borg single handedly.
The Ambassador was more akin to the Tiger tank, very powerful, very advanced but that was the issue, it was too tricky to maintain well or operate with peak efficiency, it was ahead of it's time but that was also where it fell down some times, would be like Independence day where we were trying to fly the alien ship, it was a clunky and awkward adventure which ended in a crash after a successful mission, 20 years later it was retrofitted to a good fighter fleet, the Ambassador/Galaxy story is similar to this as it was perfecting any of the Ambassador flaws.
You make it sound like the Sovereign somewhat surpassed or countered Borg Cubes which it didn't. The whole reason why it could destroy the cube in First Contact was due to Picard's connection to the Borg. Still a great video!
True. A Borg Cube could EASILY destroy a Sovereign if it wanted to. I don't even think it could defeat a Borg Sphere in straight combat, but that's not how the Borg operate. Their goal is to assimilate, not destroy.
You'd think that given his Cube destroying knowledge can be expressed with big red X on a picture of a Cube - that he'd of just told Starfleet instead of being moody and keeping it to himself.
@@JohnnyWednesday I like the idea of the big X 🤣 but I think this was either a one time situation like structural weakness that happened during the battle. If it was an actual weakspot the Borg would quite quickly adapt, maybe even by the data they received from this fight.
The Constitution class refit was taken out by a bird of prey due to the electrical short in the automation which left the ship helpless. This is true, although it only had 6 crew members if I remember correctly, at the time. But you seem to have forgotten that the Galaxy class with a full crew was taken out by an antique bird of prey. The Galaxy class did have very good fire power and excellent shields, but it was a paper tiger. If you could get past it's shields, it was easy prey as it couldn't take a hit without shields. Although it isn't relevant to this list, I have always hated the way it looked. To me it looked like it belonged on a space version of the love boat, not like a ship that was expected to be able to fight. At least that does explain why it couldn't take a hit without shields. On the other hand the Constitution was made with the idea of having to be able to handle it's self without help. And the way it looks shows it. It looks like it can take a hit and was made to be maneuverable. It had a better turning radios than any comparable ship of the time. It was the ship that saved the federation in the Klingon war. Although I do believe that the Constitution should be higher on the list, I must admit that you done a much better job on this list than I would have myself. Well done!!
Purely a personal opinion, but the "All or Nothing" armour design of the Galaxy Class made sense. The challenge is mass. Even with the very loose adherence to physics in Star Trek, the Galaxy (and Nebula class), would have been ungodly heavy. As a primarily deep space explorer and first responder to emergencies, her monstrous engines were already an essential requirement for speed. It's logical to forgo the mass of physical defenses in exchange for maneuverability (which would already be a problem in a ship that size). Despite their need to create tension for exciting TV, Enterprise D's deflectors should have been able to tank far mor than what was depicted. When you add those phaser banks that could level cities... As for the Constitution Class her hull was built before the defector screens were even a standard part of the loadout, Enterprise Refit possibly having one of the earliest setups, at least that's how it appeared to me in The Motion Picture when they first encountered V'Ger.
@@andytol1976 First of all, don't worry about me getting offended just because you have a different opinion. That is how we should learn. ;-}} I would say that your reasoning for the lack of armor would make since if it was made as one solid ship, although I would still disagree with it as a ship that size will never be hard to hit. But with it being made to separate, that should not be a problem. I know that for budget reasons in the show they didn't use that ability. But it is still a part of the ship. In my opinion what they should have done with the Galaxy design was to armor everything except the saucer section. Then when they separated, it would have been a deadly ship. Regarding the Constitution class ship. It was originally made as a combat ship, although not a dedicated war ship. That was a large part of it's concept. And it always had shields. They just got an upgrade to them in the movie. One of the big advantages of the Constitution was that it was more maneuverable than it's Klingon counterpart.
Let's just say it as it is. The writers had to think of something to get rid of the Enterprise D to make room for a starship that fits better for the movies. :(
I honestly think that the Defiant class should at least be a runner up. For its size, it was incredibly powerful, and in DS9, we saw it almost regularly rip through Jem'Hadar vessels like they were nothing.
keeping it naval, the Enterprizes were frequently put in the equivalent of a nuclear carrier flagship vessel. Only a few NX, only a few Constitution, Ambassador and 1st block of Galaxy. Cutting edge ships of their era a couple of times they ended up in a workhorse hull like the Excalibur matching up with a WW2 fletcher or Cold War Arleigh Burke and getting "long toothed" before finally getting replaced. The 1st block Galaxies were exploratory peacetime vessels, but after a couple encounters with Borg and Dominion, they were tightened up. They lost the bells and whistles and became more like the nuclear carriers of the cold war. Big ships with heavy power projection that served as fleet command vessels. I expect, if the Enterprize C hadn't crashed, that it would have been replaced by a second block Galaxy built with a combat tested, and resilient, spaceframe. The warpcore and computer issues resolved and a lot of the cruise ship feel burned away due to the Dominion war. A long endurance ship-yes, but one with significant adjustments into a more organized and martial mindset. The Sovreign was most decidedly designed as a slugger or tactical vessel a combat cruiser with exploration capabilities and very little diplomatic or first contact funtion like the second flight Galaxies would still have been equipped with being designed as deep explorers first. I think the Sovreign is starfleets recognition of a requirement for a kick ass capiitol combat ship that more aggressive races could respect. The Odyssey would be the ship built after all the lessons learned from Voyager, Dominion, and Borg were integrated and mastered and used to build a ship like the Constitution Class again. A class of a few big cutting edge generalists that could win an occaisional bare knuckle fight or bar brawl in a rowdy sector. I saw the Mirandas, Nebulas, and similar "Close Coupled" ships as the workhorses of the fleet running the vaccines, triticale, or evacuation efforts. Made from already designed parts in a "warp efficient enough" form factor with components that would be mass producible from the bleeding edge flagship designs.
What about the Dreadnought class from the reboot "Into Darkness". Yeah yeah there was only one, but massive state of the art weapons and the ability to be piloted by a minimal crew (even only 1)... is by far the strongest ship.
USS Defiant pound for pound is #1 It takes down full sized starships with ease. Defiant vs Mirror Universe Negh'var. Defiant vs Lakota. Defiant vs Vor'cha. Defiant vs Lakota and Defiant vs Breen Intercepter. All of these battles can easily be searched on TH-cam. Defiant won the battle vs the Excelsior Lakota despite its enhancements.
The vastness of space would lead to a one ship doing all things. It would be like an aircraft carrier with smaller ships that can act as a picket, fight or lifeboat. They would also be capable of multi tasking.
The excelsior's "transwarp" did work out was just a significantly faster warp drive, remember when sulu says come on come on and the helsman says that she'll fly apart? He wasn't kidding they're flying at speeds pushing nearly warp 9 (24th century scale of course) and with the advent of a faster warp drive it just didn't make sense to say warp 23 so they rescaled it to match the faster speeds in the late 23rd to early 24th century.
In the beginning of the first movie, the Dreadnaught Entente is mentioned in a communication call, but never shown. Assuming it was modernized, it would have certainly been more capable than the Constitution class.
Given that the Defiant class is the only true warship, I.e. it's designer, Sisko wanted it specially to fight, I would pick one of those if I wanted to go into a combat situation. For anything else I'd pick an Intrepid class or it's successor, Voyager really defined that class and I'm pretty sure Admiral Ross used one (The USS Bellerophon) in the dominion war that fared well in every battle it had. Also given how well the Enterprise-E fared against the Scimitar that outgunned her 3 to 1, I think a pair of Sovereigns or maybe 3 of them could have actually defeated the Scimitar. I have a soft spot for the NX-01 though, I know its massively primitive compared to the modern era but back in the day it was on the higher end of ships at the time. Warp 5 was considered fast back then and once it was upgraded post expanse, it could fight evenly against actual warships of it's era.
@@GiantFreakinRobot we don’t know how either ship would fair really against each other. The defiant however is absolutely far more maneuverable than a sovereign and possesses the same power plant of a galaxy class ship. The defiant especially the prototype that was commanded by Sisko performed well in every battle it had, it could even fight two kilngon battlecruisers while it was evacuating a ship of cardassians without shields and still warp away. It could take on 4 Jen Hadar destroyers alone, ram one, destroy the others and still cloak and warp. It took a heavily modified Excelsior class ship to fight evenly with the Defiant.
@@WaveForceful The biggest problem with the Defiant Class of Warships was that it have numerous design flaws which would cause "bugs" throughout the systems during combat. If pushed too hard, it was said it would tear itself apart. It's like putting an oversized motor in a muscle car and then not beefing up the transmission, suspension, and rear end to handle it. You are correct though in the fact that the Defiant Class of Starships were the ONLY true Warships ever built by Starfleet which seems odd when they constantly faced stronger threats such as the Romulans and Klingons and of course, the Borg. The Dominion was the least biggest threat they ever faced since their ships were not really that powerful, the crews had to be constantly drugged to man them, and they needed more ships than their enemies to defeat them. Of course, the Dominion soared when it came to gaining allies to fight against their enemies, that is where their power really came from. Not to mention, with all of the different races involved in Starfleet, they should have been leagues ahead of all of their enemies such as the Klingons and Romulans, but for some weird reason, they really weren't. They barely matched with the Klingons and both the Klingons and Starfleet were far behind the Romulans when it came to shields and armament. And will someone please explain to me why literally every Starfleet evasive maneuver seemed to land those ships in more trouble than if they just "winged it"??? LOL.
It isn't the only "true" warship. Lots of others were build for the sheer purpose of fighting the Borg. Steamrunner, Akira, Nova, and Sabre were all made for kicking butt.
There were a lot of Starfleet ship designs and you could never cover them all but I was surprised the Intrepid class didn't make the list. There was a whole series written around one.
@@GiantFreakinRobot - Why not - you think an ancient constitution class is more powerful than them. You've made me so mad! I've had to buy an ice cream.
The Galaxys biggest drawback was itself. Every week something put it on the brink of blowing up, setting adrift, or some other catastrophe. Let's not forget it was downed by a Bird of Prey as well.
Connie refit survived a V'ger blast when Klingon comparable ships couldn't. The fight with the Reliant and first Bird of Prey were without shields. Reliant hit it with a sneak attack and the ship wasn't fully repaired against the Bird of Prey. Enterprise-A was a Connie refit tech up against a prototype Bird of Prey at the end of its life. Excelsior refit was a great mod (like Enterprise A and Lakota).
I’m not arguing that the Connie refit wasn’t badass. It had its moments or it would not be on the list at all. But it wasn’t as far beyond the other ships of its era as the ships higher on the list.
@@GiantFreakinRobot However, the Klingon captain in Star Trek 3 was also confused, why the Enterprise didn't just finish them off. He knew that the Constitution class was a much more powerful ship. The only reason the Constitution class lost was because it simply wasn't able to take another fight because of the battle against Kahn without repairs. Even the most powerful ship can lose to a small fighter if it can't defend itself properly.
I love the lines and the look of the Excelsior. Sleek massive and classy. My favorite. Next favorite is probably Sovereign class Enterprise. Third is USS Nebula. None of these have anything to do with power. Purely a looks thing.
"A few years" of connie refit dominance being around 20, from 2271 when Kirk went V'ger hunting, to around 2290 when the Excelsior was formally commissioned.
I do not know if these specs are considered cannon or not, but the NCC1701-J was supposed to be almost two miles in length. Or 3.2 KM. A Borg cube for comparison is 3kmsq. Far more mass, but not as wide in any direction.
Exactly. Defiant class can ravage a Borg Cube. The Lakota could have been obliterated in 2 firing passes. Remember Defiant had rapid fire Planetary Class phasers ! This Brit Clown is a dum dum.
At 4:35, the Enterprise-J is the largest ship they ever built, but only shown for a brief moment during the Enterprise series. It is part of canon, but only referenced once, and no shows have been made about the Star Trek future using this ship. Thus, very little, if anything is known about it.
Considering how big and complex those ships were, I'm surprised they developed new models so fast (just think how long ships and planes remain in service nowadays).
Kruge did say they had him outgunned 10 to 1. Enterprise could have reduced that bird of prey to ash in both III and VI had it not been for the fact that both times she was at a disadvantage. In fact, Enterprise could have finished off the bird of prey in VI by herself after blowing it out of cloak.
I think the Miranda class refit should have made the list. The Miranda actually has more internal volume than a refit Constitution and on paper was quantifiably superior for combat than a Constitution having a similar number and type of phasers but also adding dual fore and aft torpedo launchers. Had the fight at Regula been a fair fight with both sides ready and no trickery they would have been evenly matched with only the legendary vs inexperienced crew truly deciding the outcome.
What, no love for the Defiant? That ship was one of the most iconic vessels of the Dominion War and was one of the few Starfleet ships the Founders knew by name because of how many Jem'Hadar vessels it turned to scrap metal. It was also pretty much the only Starfleet ship that was given a caveat from the Treaty of Algeron and legally allowed to use a cloaking device.
That's not how the list works. The Defiant, while being a powerful tough little ship, was never top of the line. He's not taking any bias towards hero ships, i like that.
I watch a lot of these list, and yours is one that isn't biased for hero ships and well thought out. The top dog just happens to be my favorite ship for Starfleet, and the way you placed it and the others was really good. Might disagree with one or two's posistion on here, but they wouldn't be switched around hardly at all. You are really good at the technical ideology of stuff and look forward to other videos.
Thank you so much! Really means a lot.

Point of order "many galaxy class ships were lost during the dominion war".
We didn't see that onscreen. In fact we saw precisely one destroyed during the war. The Oddysey might be a debatable point but it was long before formal hostilities.
The Excelsior class for the Federation is equivalent to the B-52 of the USAF with it’s longevity amongst more technologically advanced ships/planes
That’s an interesting analogy. It works!
I was going to make the same comparison
Best analogy I’ve seen to date, but they’ll probably refit the BUFF to be an interstellar bomber.

The Enterprise B variant of the Excelsior is one of my favorite designs, such simple changes to the original but it looks so much better.
I agree. And they literally just did it to have a piece to blow off, but it looks great!
The Defiant is awesome but what kills me is that it was almost destroyed the first time they used it on DS9. Always baffled me.
The Klingon Bird of Prey is the R2-D2 of the Star Trek universe:
Always there, defying expectations, with plot armor so thick it even prevents aging.
I was half expecting one to take out USS Discovery during the finale.
Love the comparison. Very true
Plot armor so thick! Lol I love it.
A bird of prey inexplicably destroying Discovery sounds lovely.
There have been many different Klingon birds of prey over the years:
M'Chla class, K'vort-class, B'rel-class, D12 class & Class 5 (pressumably there would be a class 1 to 4 as well?)
It would be more accurate to say that the bird of prey is a type of ship; a Corvette for example.
"Odyssey is the biggest ship ever by startfleet" Enterprise J: am I a joke to you 😂
Enterprise J was a hypothetical future. We don’t know if it will ever come to pass.

I would play the heck out of that game.
@@GiantFreakinRobot Well, you still can. It's more than time they updated the engine, though. Summer event is on. You can get a T6 ship from there if you're fast.

Very important question. Can there really be fireworks in space?
Of course, for exactly the same reason that a modern firearm will fire at least once in vacuum: it provides its own oxidizer.
😂 No. Fireworks, smoke and flames do not show in space. Hollywood deals in fiction, not reality.
Yep sums it up, you forgot the juggernaut class though
I’d say the Ambassador started building in the mid 2320s.
Figure 40 years between the launch of the major multi mission flagship classes :
2245 - Constitution
2285 - Excelsior
2325 - Ambassador
2360 - Galaxy
2400 - Odyssey

I find it amazing that post-scarcity, post-currency, and people doing whatever, they still have problems with resources and production.
I think it's due to rare elements that require incredibly complex production processes. You cannot replicate everything in Star Trek.

Picard series with those LCARS... Like at 9:03, soooooo good!
They all would be great if their shields didn't go down after the first volley!
Great video, as are the rest of them. Question, am I right in interpreting you are only including production ships within the original timeline? The USS Vengeance would surely be included even though it had a very short lifespan!
Yeah prime timeline only
@@GiantFreakinRobot you won’t catch me raising a fuss about not including what JJ did to ST…
@@GiantFreakinRobot …as it should be thanks to our pal JJ, destroyer of many universes.
My fav was the Akira class, Starfleet's battle boat from hell! It just never got the screen time outside of the video games. 😈
Great ship. But inferior to the Sovereign
It got a lot during #Startrekfirstcontact and the Dominion War on #DS9
I'm with you! How is the Intrepid class not even mentioned? it survived 7 years in the Delta quadrant against #Vidians #Borg #Kazon #Hirogen.
Hmm I'm not sure. USS Defiant under Worf, it's a bloody fast ship (far faster at warp than anything else), is all guns and ammo, and has Worf commanding. Designed purely to defeat the Borg. I'm going with the Defiant.
@@cottonfoo Defiant class only had a top speed of warp 9.5 making it a slower ship given its newer design.
Where's my Excelsior mafia at!?!?!
Excelsior class, my favorite one.
So the Defiant, and Akira class are not worth mentioning compared to the Excelsior or Constitution class??
Not in that list because they never outmatched the top of the line by the time they were introduced.
No Intrepid class? That ship survived 7 years in the Delta quadrant.
You make it sound like the Sovereign somewhat surpassed or countered Borg Cubes which it didn't. The whole reason why it could destroy the cube in First Contact was due to Picard's connection to the Borg. Still a great video!
I still think it had a better shot than any other ship, with or without Picard
@@GiantFreakinRobot That's totally true
@@andytol1976 First of all, don't worry about me getting offended just because you have a different opinion. That is how we should learn. ;-}}
I would say that your reasoning for the lack of armor would make since if it was made as one solid ship, although I would still disagree with it as a ship that size will never be hard to hit.
Hated that ship with that big ass saucer.
The constitution class appears in TNG battle with borg plus they were briefly mentioned
Sorry folks! But my favorites are the Akyazi Class Perimeter Actions ships and the Abbe Class Photon Torpedo Destroyers... Nuff Said
The vastness of space would lead to a one ship doing all things. It would be like an aircraft carrier with smaller ships that can act as a picket, fight or lifeboat. They would also be capable of multi tasking.
Any ship that almost breaks when useing it cannons is the one for me, USS Defiant FTW :)
Defiant Class for the win!
The bulk of Starfleet’s ships were mainly used for exploring not war
Not during the Dominion War.
The Dominion War lasted 2 years@@GiantFreakinRobot
Good point. Only #Sovereign #Prometheus #Intrepid #Akira and #Defiant classes were built for combat.
Odessy and Thurgy class are IMHO two of the finest looking ships in the fleet.
TOS Enterprise will always have a special place.
Oh if we are going by looks this would be a very different list!
I'm a fan of the Sovereign Class. I play STO and my favorite ship is the Lexington Class Dreadnaught.
The Defiant is great but it was a contemporary of the Sovereign and no way it could take a Sovereign
LOL.
Defiant was tough. Super armor, quantum torpedoes. Yellow blasters, plus it was tiny and fast, so hard to hit.
Voyager kick every ass in the Delta Quadrant.
Yeah but you don’t really believe it’s a more powerful ship than the Sovereign or Galaxy do you?
@@GiantFreakinRobot - Why not - you think an ancient constitution class is more powerful than them. You've made me so mad! I've had to buy an ice cream.
Preach it!
@@GiantFreakinRobot And yet a "normal" BOP destroyed a Galaxy class ship with ease.
@@Phantassm that was for plot reasons
I'm sorry but the Defiant was holding back. That toe-to-toe talk is crap. The Lakota was shooting to kill. And even then, the Lakota came out worse
There is some information on it. It's on star trek online.
You miss the most powerful warship, the USS vengeance.
Alternate Kelvin timeline. But you're right; that ship would kick every Starfleet, Breen, Dominion, or Borg ship's ass!
That and Defiant Class.OPPS !
Leaving the Defiant off of this list is a huge mistake. It consistently dominated foes that were superior in both numbers and tonnage.
It would have to beat a Sovereign. Can it?
I would argue that the Defiants cloak would give it an advantage@GiantFreakinRobot
It tore Dominion ships to hell!
this would have been a lot better if done in the time line from earliest to latest.
still tho got a sub from me
What, no love for the Defiant? That ship was one of the most iconic vessels of the Dominion War and was one of the few Starfleet ships the Founders knew by name because of how many Jem'Hadar vessels it turned to scrap metal. It was also pretty much the only Starfleet ship that was given a caveat from the Treaty of Algeron and legally allowed to use a cloaking device.
That's not how the list works. The Defiant, while being a powerful tough little ship, was never top of the line. He's not taking any bias towards hero ships, i like that.
