@@FrostbiteDigital The earliest EU materials said that Mon Cala was an alien civilization that Empire made first contact with. Underestimating them led to Empire losing an entire fleet during their initial subjugation attempt. Ackbar was enslaved and became "personal property" of none other than Wilhuf Tarkin. Not aboard the Death Star when it was destroyed, he was able to escape (presumably taking the advantage of chaos and power vacuum resulting from loss of the Death Star) and contact Rebel Alliance.

They weren't luxury vessels...they were literally mini cities. Like, think of them as skyscrapers clustered together at the bottom of the oceans of their home world. They were designed to be able to flee in case of emergency, which the Empire certainly was. So, it's literally a home ship by any definition

I remember reading somewhere- maybe one of the X-Wing novels- that some of the small "blisters" were actually anti-starfighter bombs. Sensors would indicate whether an incoming fighter was friend or foe, if it would fly though a predefined field of effect, and if there were any friendlies that could get caught in the blast. If the conditions were right, the armament would detonate and throw a lot of shrapnel at the enemy. Rebel/Republic fighters would abandon chasing some enemy fighters if they got too close to the Mon Cals to avoid any unnecessary conflicts.

Do love the breakdowns! Some of the flaws of the design were mostly due to them being converted from passenger liners. The ship was a broadside vessel, which meant it could only bring half it's guns to bear on a single target at a time. Whereas an ISD facing forwards could bring virtually all it's guns beyond the rear arc to fire for brutally effective barrages. Given they were broadside vessels, this also meant that the hangars were vulnerable to concentrated fire which made launching and recovering starfighters over combat was extremely dangerous.
Also until after the Battle of Endor due to the ships being made primarily for Mon Calmari physiology repairing them was extremely difficult due to the unique nature of parts intended for them and the small number of technicians who were fluent with them. Very few shipyards the Alliance had could do more than basic repairs on them, and virtually only the shipyards on Mon Cala could build them, which meant very few were capable of being fielded.
But they were virtually the only ship in the Alliance Navy that could go toe to toe with Imperial class Star Destroyers and survive (or sometimes win) which made them desperately necessary.
Going by Legends you have the Battle of Turkana (the debut of the X-Wing fighter in combat) where 7 MC-80 variants drove off 11 ISD's with only a few squadrons of X-Wing and Y-Wings with them, that eliminated the Imperial fighter screen and left the ISD's vulnerable to a crossfire.

See I much preferred the original idea back in the EU when Mon Calamari warships were actually just converted passenger luxary ships like the those big ocean liners we have today. Home One literally had an indoor beach, it doesn't get anymore luxurious than that!

@@Kurayamiblack So - forgive me if I go off on a exceptionally in depth essay, for fans here:
All those statistics listed are 'official' basically - beginning in West End Game's Roleplaying Game.
It's possible the 10 starfighter squadrons figure began there too, but perhaps that is a holdover from some behind the scenes information?
The Return of the Jedi Novelization in 1983 hints the Home One is 'larger' than pretty much every other Rebel ship preparing to go to Endor.
The Technical Commentaries site estimates the right-hand hangar is about 29.146 times smaller than the overall ship length - but has an interior 'lip' with a smaller inner bay, which seems to be much smaller (44.26 times smaller than the whole length - or 5.4 cm relative to a 239 cm total model)
All that leads to a very large size for the ship, assuming the bay is over 60 metres wide. Easily close to 3000 metres. If it is 70 metres wide internally then the total length is about 3100 metres.
And in Ahsoka recently, when the Ghost lands inside - that has been estimated (by rebelscale. cm) as giving a total length of 3200 metres or more - or two miles.
Whilst Technical Commentaries uses other clues about the landed shuttle or ships outside, to get an upper limit of 3800 metres.
Myself I am most comfortable with a size of 3.1 to 3.2 km. The 1300 metre size has been added in the early 2000s, I think - by the Wizards of the Coast roleplaying game. Obviously it only works if you ignore the hangar's literal layout.
The sublight speed figure is prone to shift between RPG stats and the X-Wing video games (which rounded some up or down)
If the speed given is '7' in the RPG, and the TIE Fighter speed is '8', then the TIE either clocks out at 100 MGLT, or 80 MGLT. But both the X-Wing and the TIE have variants in West End Games where the speed is listed as '10'.
If the former, then 100 may = 8, and then 87.5 may = '7', and 75 may equal '6' (like the ISD and the MC80 are often listed as) In the video games, all warships average much slower speeds though - not counting atmospheric speeds. Also, yes, a lot of this has been hashed out on the Jedi Council Forums (particularly in Fleet Junkie Flagship pages) and also: yeah, I am a member these days.
Just FYI. But it can be fun to discuss such things. Just like with a certain 'five mile SSD' ah - dispute.

i don't think that "MC-80" should refer to anything other than Rebel Mon Cal Cruisers equipped with the Advanced Rebel 80 series reactor core. Basically, it was developed by the Rebels so they could convert the MonCal Merchant and exploration fleet into a first-rate battle fleet. First they cut out sections for installation of an "MC-80" reactor then after installation they would fitt out the ship appropriately for its role in the Rebel Fleet. Some were used as frontal Battlecruisers, others as Battle Carriers (like Home 1) Since Moncal Ships came in so many varieties ships were basically custom built but they all had the MC-80 reactor in command that allowed very powerful shielding and Turbo Laser support.
They Key to the MC-80 line was the MC-80 reactor was superior to the older type model used on ISD Is and ISD II (it was in fact a heavily upgraded version of a pre-clone Wars reactor)
After the destruction of Alderan and the destruction of the first Death Star the Empire lost virtually all political credit beyond fear and bribery.
This is why the Rebels gained so much power in such a relatively short period as lots of first-rate scientists joined the Rebelion and many planets began to ""lose"" (donate) valvule resources and equipment, allowing the Rebellion to expand.
Of course the Empire was still a very powerful force, but it could no longer rule by any kind of popular mandate and only through fear.

The MC80 Home One ships gotta be one of my favorite ships. I do have to wonder though, what would happen if the Kamminoan cities wasn't destroyed by the Empire, and the Kamminoans joined the Rebellion, with a bunch of Venators, Acclamators and Kuat decided to say "eff it, let's join the Rebellion", while contributing the ships the clones were used to?
I know, i know, it's an alternate Star Wars reality, but who would supply the Empire if Kuat decided to change team, and collaborate with the Mon Calas. I actually want to see a What If show, just like the one Marvel has, but for Star Wars.
I do hope we get to see a movie where Kuat and the Mon Cala ship yard collaborates in a ship and for once is on the good side, together, helping the Republic Rey, Finn, Poe and the Resistance helped to rebuild and restore, during their war with the First and Final Order. We do after all know Star Wars EP 10, 11 and 12 is coming, so maybe we get to see Mon Cala Shipyards and Kuat Driveyards on the same side. I hope it happens

In X-Wing Alliance, it's name was the Independence. In my mind it was only titled Home-One when it was acting as the Rebel Alliance HQ with Mon Mothma and the other Rebel leaders, but it became synonymous with the ship particularly after Endor, so old rebel hands continued to refer to it as the honorific Home One even after it's call-sign changed back to the Independence.

I wonder if you'd ever be interested in covering some of the lego star wars ships. Obviously the lego sets themselves aren't really somethino cite for lore or information, less than even the action figures would be, and Lego Star Wars is definitely on the outermost run of "canon" in the franchise regardless of Disney's pretense of canon. But there's been a few Lego Star Wars shows and movies put out by this point, so it exists as a thing to consider.
Mainly I just really like the Freemaker Adventures, which is about a group of salvagers who eventually join up with the rebels as repairmen and shipwrights, and I think there are some neat designs in there. (and ironically I don't think the tie-in lego sets are even very good anyways). I think season 2 where they're serving on the Home One servicing starfighters is kind of a neat perspective on the ship, even if it's all jokey and cartoony

Mon Calamari Cruisers are basically works of art, converted to warfare, but built to last.
But realistically in terms of warfare, converting civilian vessels to war use, is only done out of desperation which was the case in the star wars universe. The Rebel Alliance couldn't afford to be picky, and an MC80 with its powerful armament and durable shields and hull was simply just too good to refuse. Like in Star Wars Rebels when Phoenix Squadron steals 3 hammerhead corvettes, its obvious, the Rebels took whatever they could get and that makes good practical sense.
The MC80's "blisters" being breakaway lifeboats, seems like a good idea, but in truth it makes more handy to just use escape pods because a breakaway craft, would have to maintain its own engines and life support systems, and that would require more crew and resources to maintain. Remember, the more systems your ship has, all the more can go wrong.
I would like to see more vids on the actual Mon Calamari Cruisers like the MC90's that were built strictly as warships.

As much as i love the Mon Cal Cruisers and their unique design i always think that it is mere plot armor that a MC of any version is more powerful than any Star Destroyer.
the ships are redesigned civil luxury cruisers. how could that compare to a ship that is specifically designed for space combat and intergalactic warfare?
image telling anyone that the redesigned titanic would have been the most powerful battleship in WW1.
you`d ask yourself "how on earth could that be ???"
it couldn't. and i dont understand why there is so much effort to make the MCs the better ship instead of having the underdog story

A spaceship would be in likeness to a submarine crew. Small and well equipped to preform multiple different roles for the vessel. Also the federation gets passed this problem with having many many piolt Droids. Many of the larger spacecraft would also doubt less have programing to run half of the ship on its own.

Lets just admit what we all know. The root of all problems in the Star Wars universe is religion. The war between the Jedi and the Sith is the true conflict, with everyone else just pawns. Without them, the Empire is certainly not evil and more or less a human peace keeping force, protecting trade and human interests and in fact are generally quite polite soldiers on the ground just doing their jobs altruistically and professionally. The rebels by and large are just terrorists, and with the Jedi and Sith gone, there is no reason for their existence.
