There's a version of this hack that lets you play as Fang from Contra: Hard Corps. So you can be a werewolf with a gun arm. Makes things fit a bit more thematically.
That... sounds pretty fun tbh, give the bosses their own connected regions, but whichever direction you go from the beginning, the level design still enables you to navigate back as well as seeming to always progress forward into the new area.. so plenty of spaces to use all of the upgrades in each region, and especially in the area you get the upgrade in
