I understand this video is for fun and the item is more a novelty, conversation piece but for those who are asking the question of “case vs caseless” literally…cases are important for numerous reasons. Dust, animals, accidents, spilling drinks/food, acoustics, moving locations/homes, etc. Also, air movement over components is better than free releasing heat/air both for cooling and cleaning. Then there are physical safety reasons for children and animals from electric shock or body parts in attached moving fans.
If you are determined to go caseless, you are better off just building the thing into your motherboard's cardboard box it came in. Have a case fan kept in place via double sided tape/zip ties blow air towards the VRMs, and you are done. Paying some $179 for this thing doesn't make much sense. It's a pretty hobo mode PC, but if you are situating the PC somewhere it is very unlikely to get anything spilled/knocked on it, and you don't have any kids or pets running around, then sure. At least cleaning the dust off will be easy if you have no case.
@@MidWitPride Or if you want something fancier, get a piece of wood and some brackets, paint it any color you want (or not) and just screw the components to that. you can go doublesided like the case in the video, or singleside if you want.
@@jankoodziej877 Nothing under normal use circumstances get hot enough in your PC to ignite wood or even get anywhere close to the required temperatures. Unless there's a short circuit, but at that point even most regular PC cases are in danger of catching fire, as those plastics used in them are also quite flammable under the wrong circumstances. Moral of the story really is: Don't short circuit your components.
I would love to see ltt design and 3d print an sff LAN case that is as small as possible and can fit decent enough hardware for competitive fps games but portable enough to easily lug into a suitcase to a convention or a friends house!
Small volume doesn't explain this entirely. The cost is probably not even a quarter of the sale price. It's just a given that these small cases have a ridiculous margin.
I recommend getting an actual case, maybe even 2nd hand. Plus also, if you have kids, they might stick stuff into the GPU fan. Case with removable panels/easy installation. Also, when moving the PC, you may end up scratching the motherboard. I don't have kids, but this sounds like a nightmare ready to happen. :)
I think the dust problem is easily offset by how accessible everything is. Blowing compressed air to remove dust is no longer a 20-minute disruption with diving under your desk, unplugging, unscrewing, carrying outside, blowing air in all the nooks and crannies then reassembling everything. You'll need to do it much more often but the whole work will be 10 seconds without ever unplugging anything or even switching it off.
2:57 Hey you Linus you remember the time that Anthony did the same thing you just did during the super cheap Ali express test bench. Linus you played yourself
Why wasn't an AMD cpu used for this build? The difference in thermal performance would be huge for a cooler of this size. That i5 has a TDP of 125w, while the 5600x has a TDP of 65w. That noctua wouldn't struggle!

Just hit the thing with some compressed air every month. This is by far the most dust free computer I have ever owned.
I thought the Antec Skeleton was the most awesome case ever back in the day. When I was able to get one, I was very excited, until I turned it on. Though, this looks cool and my latest build is a mini-ITX.
@@HadenBlake I only had the case for about 6 months before putting the computer back in it's original case (which I still have and use for my daily driver to this day). I do remember having to hit it with some duster every few weeks, I don't know that it gets dirtier or it's just way more noticeable. Though, it would make sense that the components would be dirtier without grills, fans, and filters to collect up some of the gunk.
Sometimes I wonder if there could ever be instructions clear enough for Linus. He's a great test case cause it's guaranteed he will find the right way to misinterpret a set of instructions. ; D
I’d want this case to have a small “carrying case” of sorts, if I’m transporting it, I’d want it to be safe when in a car. Not applying to airflow since it’d be to protect the exposed internals, only larger enough to fit most builds without mega gpus
I absolutely love these open itx cases I've been seeing. I'm actually building my own custom mATX open "spine style" case now on my works water jet table 🙌🏼
Yeah except it's shitty and doesn't work hard enough. Definitely needs a tower. There's no brackets anywhere to float a radiator, so you can't liquid cool unless you just set the radiator on the table or something
That definitely looks like silicone jacketed wire, and if it's the same stuff I remember, it also uses *super* fine stranded wire which I believe is also responsible for it's "extra supple" feel and flexibility lol. It's kinda ornery to have to strip and crimp but since that's already done for you, it's *so* nice to route, manage and work with!
One nice thing I could see people using the XWORKS X32 for is to 3D Print a shell for this so they can make a compact PC Case and CHOOSE how large they want it to be in order to accomodate larger GPUs, or extend the length to accomodate for the use of an SFX Powersupply, & purchasing a PSU extension cord to put on the back & use the spot for a Flex PSU as an area to stash cables.
Love whoever made the *actual* "heart" outline that Linus was making with his hands. It's always just so ridiculously off with that gesture :D Also... A Steve1989MREInfo reference in the video chapters, huh
for the powersupply, you could always replace the fan with a 40mm fan from noctua. although, opening a powersupply gives me the heebie jeebies, you COULD do that.
I replaced a delta fan for a noctua in an 1u psu before, did not really work out. Just not enough airflow. Delta fans are a bit loud but provide excellent CFM.
I have done this with varying success. You have to go with the 40x20mm thick fan as I have tried the 40x10mm and that did not provide enough airflow but when I replaced it with a 40x20mm it continues to work 1 year later and is MUCH quieter!
@@Eelinki course i haven't done it myself, but I've seen it done before by other SFF builders on youtube. I can imagine though that what you say is true. Modifying a PSU in any way is of course shaky ground, especially when it comes to taking away cooling from that much power in such a small package.
I love how apparent Linus's Canadianness is when he almost drops the power supply and APOLOGIZES. He owns the power supply, the room, all the equipment in the room, and he even pays for the crews' time and yet HE apologizes and I love it.
This would GREAT with some black metal mesh custom formed to cover the sensitive bits. Same size, better protection. Just remove the mesh occasionally to hit with an air duster.
I think this might have to be tested with an AMD CPU as less power required required and doesn't put out as much heat, so it might be good to see how it compares with that cooler if it's got an amd bracket, I haven't looked into low profile coolers in, well, ever
I suppose they went with what they had in stock and didn't have an amd itx on hand, but yeah the 65w ryzens are pretty good. Also maybe went with igpu to setup the pcie extension. Because it's a pita to configure sometimes, and since they want to make videos fast, saving the hassle might be worth it.
In addition to the dust and hair floating around that may end up in the fins, you have to watch for hippos randomly trying to enter the system as well!
As someone who hates the dust on open cases, the sheer tinyness and compatibility with strong and hot components kind of outweighs that. Mod the fan on the flex psu and it can be quiet, small, cool, poweful, and accessible ALL IN ONE.
@Patrick Are you offended on behalf of Linus? I'm mocking him because he obviously knows better than to use a last generation Intel CPU for this kind of build. He's clearly only doing it because he gets some kickback when someone buys one from the links supplied in the video description.

@@heygek2769 I would not recommend wood for a PC, due to safety reasons (it could be a fire hazard).
@@jankoodziej877 lol.
God damn one of the best sponsor segways in a while. Good job linus
Segue - a transition made without pause or interruption
Segway - a discontinued goofy two wheeled electric transportation thingy
You can easily do noctua fan mod/swap for the flex psu. It's pretty common move on the sff comunity.
12:51 My heart stopped when the GPU fan did not start after Linus let it go
I would love to see ltt design and 3d print an sff LAN case that is as small as possible and can fit decent enough hardware for competitive fps games but portable enough to easily lug into a suitcase to a convention or a friends house!
Hmm would it be rgb
@@technews5020 it's a LAN pc to show off... And rgb is just free fps, so more rgb = more everything
Hmm maybe if they sent it for a review then told him to give it back when finished
the perfection of the fan size to motherboard is an OCD dream
Why is this so expensive?!
There's more packing material than case material. It's like the gamer equivalent of buying a designer g-string.
Small volume doesn't explain this entirely. The cost is probably not even a quarter of the sale price. It's just a given that these small cases have a ridiculous margin.
@El Dimos Karam "research" my ass, not a damn thing in this product is new.
I think I might stick to my PVC pipe rig.
@@karebu2 Wait what, you have a PVC pipe computer rig? Care to show us?
That CPU cooler is such a perfect fit. Glorious.
Also, those just slap a Noctua 40 mm fan inside that PSU.
I immediately thought of this too!
Why wasn't an AMD cpu used for this build?
The difference in thermal performance would be huge for a cooler of this size.
That i5 has a TDP of 125w, while the 5600x has a TDP of 65w. That noctua wouldn't struggle!
beats me man, ryzen 5000's efficiency makes it top tier for small ITX builds
at least he didn't put the 12900K in there
Intel probably sponsored part of this and paid extra for them not to put the disclaimer. No way they didn't think of an AMD build first.
He -'s sponsored by Intel- just forgot
@@daniels-mo9ol thats, sadly, illegal. So they weren't sponsored for sure, but maybe it was a speed thing, or for Overclocking headroom? Or it was just what was compatible with that Motherboard honestly.
@@edgarrivas6438 I think it's because of motherboard compatibility, he wanted the most ballers motherboard and probably didn't have an amd compatible one
God Linus, you get better looking every year.
"Let's get this out onto a tray: nice." Loving the Steve reference there.
I have a case almost exactly like this one, but it is just built out of foamboard, zip ties, and velcro.
p.s. For those worrying about keeping a case like this clean it is really easy. Just hit the thing with some compressed air every month. This is by far the most dust free computer I have ever owned.
I imagine running a decent air purifier in the room would help too.
Been watching this guy for over 10 years and still can't figure it out when the ad is coming.
I thought the Antec Skeleton was the most awesome case ever back in the day. When I was able to get one, I was very excited, until I turned it on. Ung, the coil whine was unbearable, like having tinnitus. This was with components that where silent in my regular full sized case with a plexi side panel. Never getting an open air case again.
I think that was the smoothest sponsor spot you have ever done Linus. Took me a bit to realize you were doing a sponsor spot haha Great stuff!
Always like the sudden segways. Nice work keeping me on my toes.
That's what I was thinking. If you have this for on the go you could pair it with a pelican case.
@@Muscleduck I really want to do a version of that build, I just can't find that case kit anywhere.
You mean you want it to actually be a "case"... By definition and function this is not.
The true to actual linus’s hand-heart shape effect was really funny. Nice touch.
I absolutely love these open itx cases I've been seeing. I'm actually building my own custom mATX open "spine style" case now on my works water jet table 🙌🏼
Anyone wanna talk about the 2 SSDs never actually being connected via any S-ATA cables whatsoever xD
He hooked up the power cables but forgot the data cables, I think Linus has gotten a little to used to installing m.2 drives.
Motherboard has Wireless SATA from 2026
Data? no need data if you can charge your SSD to be faster
That CPU cooler on that motherboard is so satisfying. It just fits so perfectly.
Wow, I love how clean that CPU cooler looks on that motherboard.
Yeah except it's shitty and doesn't work hard enough. Definitely needs a tower. There's no brackets anywhere to float a radiator, so you can't liquid cool unless you just set the radiator on the table or something
Wanna.... Wanna...
"wanna hear about our sponsor"
I lol'd that was good!
It was the best transition I have ever seen for a sponsor.
Cmon the one at the beginning was good too
the silicone cabling is INCREDIBLE.
Linus is just the GOAT at sponsorship transitions
"Everything is labeled so you can't screw up"
well how the screws have flipped!
Linus says what can go wrong nearly every video shortly followed by a dropping of something 😂
This PC is amazing, I love these small form factors. Maybe one day I will build my own.
Now I want to see a build with those huge passive coolers for both CPU and GPU!
the tiny hippo from those commercials back in the day in Canada made my day XD
I’ve been wanting to build an open air for so long but for $180 US I can’t justify it
GPU mining rig
You could buy 25% of a GPU for that price!
Get a piece of wood and some brackets. paint it any color you want. add some side stands. Done
Is that seriously the price of this tiny piece of folded metal?
Deconstruct an old ATX case and reconstruct into a test bench type open air case for cheap. How-to videos on youtube.
I can't even imagine using such a case. The dust would get in all the nooks and crannies on this thing.
It would be fine unless the buyer has a super dusty house.
@@Macky4941 Or anyone with a pet.
Well, it’s way to clean.
But with a case like this it's easier to clean so there's that.
Compresses air
Love whoever made the *actual* "heart" outline that Linus was making with his hands. It's always just so ridiculously off with that gesture :D
Also... A Steve1989MREInfo reference in the video chapters, huh
man, I love the way that mobo looks with the cooler
for the powersupply, you could always replace the fan with a 40mm fan from noctua. although, opening a powersupply gives me the heebie jeebies, you COULD do that.
Come on man! The RX 6800 would be perfect on that 500w PSU. Efficiency is one of the few real advantages AMD has lol.
And why go 11th gen over AMD CPU when cooling was going to be an issue?
@@ablet85 I bet both of these is because Linus gets paid big time by Intel and NVIDIA.
@@ablet85 amd is overrated trash lol

Linus opening the screwbox after pointing out how everything was sorted so nicely at 2:55, is the most frustrating thing I ever had to witness
I only clicked the video because Linus was on the right side
I love how apparent Linus's Canadianness is when he almost drops the power supply and APOLOGIZES. He owns the power supply, the room, all the equipment in the room, and he even pays for the crews' time and yet HE apologizes and I love it.
14:45 lol love the house hippo - Canadian 90's tv reference.
This would GREAT with some black metal mesh custom formed to cover the sensitive bits. Same size, better protection. Just remove the mesh occasionally to hit with an air duster.
Totally. And a plex PSU which is a silent and gives 400w (if not more) which would be fine for a 3060 and AMD 65w CPU
It would be cool if there were a hard shell case for you to put it in for travel, I would feel so anxious about the components being hit, etc.
Just get a small pelican case
14:45 I love the house hippo reference!
Same thing I was thinking, 5600X would have been nice in there.
It takes a special kind of genius to chose a Intel CPU when you're trying to minimize power draw, thermals and noise.
Wouldn't a r5 5600x been better??
@Patrick Are you offended on behalf of Linus? I'm mocking him because he obviously knows better than to use a last generation Intel CPU for this kind of build. He's clearly only doing it because he gets some kickback when someone buys one from the links supplied in the video description.
@@Skruffyguy578 Yes, it absolutely would.
@Patrick How are they being a little shit? Linus is off his rocker for going with a power-hungry, hot, and low-performance CPU for a build that has to work with 500 Watts and little cooling.
