I hate that people say they don't "believe" in science. You can't "believe" in science. Science and the scientific method is quite factual, reasonable and logical.
No one says the don't believe in science, that's what the powers that be say about these people when they see data that conflicts with the majority position. It's a smear to avoid debate.
Think about it. People can not believe in science. You can't test everything. You can't do research on every little fun fact you hear. You can't test every aspect of science. You have to believe that what the scientists are saying is true. You can choose to not believe in many science-related things. You can choose to believe that the way scientists said how gravity is working is false. It most likely means that you believe in something that is incorrect, but you can still believe it.

scientific studies can be done with bad methods and give wrong results. scientists can be influenced by politics. scientific studies that are not sensational tend to be forgotten or maybe not even accepted, even if they are true.
Science isn’t always true, it’s a processes of building on the mistakes of others and expanding our knowledge. I am a huge believer in science but that doesn’t mean that I don’t believe in mistakes. That’s why if research is super important it is, repeated over and over to make sure we have all the facts and it is correct. Than as technology improves we go back and revisit the topic. That’s what I love about science it’s a never ending process that can always be improved.

He did that because religion is a subject which excites emotion. It makes more sense to use something which we are all subject to in just about every decision we make, regardless of whether or not we go by evidence. It has to pass that emotion filter, no matter who you are.

I have a friend like this, when he gets angry, he just stops thinking and instead of trying to figure out whether a statement is correct, he tries to find ways to figure out why it is wrong. Even when faced with overwhelming evidence he delays the verification of this evidence in until he's exhausted by trying to find a reason why he's correct. He's not stupid, he's actually pretty smart, it's just that you need to wait till they calm down and then provide more evidence.

I like this episode, because I like psychology. I don't like other people saying _other people_ are stupid. My take is as long as someone's opinion (in this case, on science) isn't doing anything any harm, then why bother. Now the President-Elect and his associated peoples could really cause harm with their beliefs so that is bad. My dad on the other hand, isn't really doing any more harm than the average person with his disbelief in global warming, so I don't bother arguing with him about it. It's so not worth it arguing with someone who just goes, "IT'S FAKE CREATED BY DEMOCRATS" 5 seconds after hearing the words 'global warming'. I like this episode because you explained why people react like that! It's interesting; I love learning psychology.
On that one instance it may be, but your father (assuming he is american that is), is part of the voting populace. And in order to start making headway on some issues, it unfortunately requires government interference, aka voting by the masses. Also, if your father believes in this 1 conspiracy theory, how many others does he believe in? It's a compounding effect and it is dangerous. I've gotten into many arguments with my own mother over scientific things (evolution). She doesn't believe we evolved from Apes/Monkeys, and I'm fine with that, but when I tried talking about evolution in general, she stopped listening and shut it down with "I don't believe in evolution"... BUT EVOLUTION ISN'T JUST ABOUT WHERE HUMANS COME FROM!! Ugh... I had to explain that to her because it is a dangerous line of thinking or lack of thinking that eventually effects us all with how people act, how they vote, what they consume. But yes, it is very interesting from a psychology stand point. I love psychology and social psychology.

All facts are actually opinions, because, in order to state a fact, a group of scientists has to agree with the same opinion that was stated. Because they all have to "agree" - some of them can "disagree", therefore the fact is actually an opinion.
The evidence is made in order to convince scientists. Because they have to be "convinced" - they just tell their opinions - "the evidence makes this opinion a fact" or "the evidence doesn't make this opinion a fact".
science is never settled, and the problem is that the notion to "believe in science" means we don't have to think about it and that's not what science is.
I don't doubt the existence of climate change, or even that mankind has contributed, even significantly to it. What I'm opposed to is more government regulation. Regulation is expensive, even for those already in compliance because you have to prove you're in compliance. But in terms of people 'not believing science' -- some of us have been around long enough to know that "science" (as broad and indeterminate as that term is) keeps changing its mind on things (speaking broadly, not specifically about climate change). Wait a decade or two or three and a new theory and the predominating ideas will have changed. Someone can be 100% convinced of something today, only to find out in a few years that they were wrong. Textbooks will have been published in that time, laws may have been enacted to enforce the predominate views at the time, etc. only to discover later on that they were wrong. I think (again, speaking broadly, not climate change) that as a society we (1) act too quickly on ideas that are still just theories, and (2) are too accepting of working theories as fact. In other words, some of us get tired of "science" crying wolf, and being forced to change education and behavior based on ideas that are still just working theories.
doubledeej That is a really fair point and thank you for having the courage to make your opinion known. Doing so in TH-cam comments is especially brave! So good on you. However, there is a considerable amount of evidence that climate change is not only real but a significant threat. Debating this only wastes valuable time that should be used to make any improvements we can towards our planet and the future of humanity. It's that serious. Govt regulations are tough and costly (and arguably inefficient sometimes- trying to be fair) but at least it's a step in the right direction to do the right thing. If govt regs are too tough for corporations to comply then why not negotiate a better solution? Instead of condemning climate and earth science why not bring those same experts and engineers in to come up with ways to make compliance easier (faster and cheaper)? Also look to the folks with a "Startup" mindset. I'd imagine some amazing results if you brought that kind of talent to a roundtable with scientists and engineers.
The whole idea of using government regulations to fix things is what bugs me. I mean, we don't have to regularly file reports proving that we didn't murder someone. Or that we didn't speed while we were driving. For the most part we're allowed to run our own lives and then the government only steps in when there's an obvious infraction. Not only is it expensive to not be in compliance, or even expensive to be in compliance, it's expensive just to run the tests to know if you're in compliance. That said, I'm generally conservative, but I hate that the political right basically takes the approach of "this doesn't exist" rather than "let's find a better way to know we're on the right track." I also hate that the political left tries to cram regulations down our throats. There has to be a better way.
You don't understand what Regulations are then. Regulations put in place by government are PROTECTIONS. In every instance where you see the word regulation, replace it with protection and see if you want to get rid of them. Every protection the government enacts has a basis in something that has gone wrong. Protections against corporations dumping toxic waste in your water, or allowing your employer to force you to work in unsafe conditions, or not requiring safety devices cars or other heavy machinery. Someone has gotten hurt, sick, or died for nearly every protection the government has put in place.
Those are most definitely not the type of regulations I've had to deal with in my career. I'm a contract software developer and have done projects over thirty years in numerous industries, and what I've seen is far different than what you're describing. What I've seen and had to comply with are things like regularly capturing and sending data to regulatory agencies. Studies that have to be done before a project can start (even when the outcome is known ahead of time). Processes and procedures that are regularly audited, documentation that has to be kept, certifications that have to be held by people working on a project, etc. It takes up a huge amount of time and effort. Depending on the project and the industry, compliance training, implementation, testing, and certification often takes far more time than the rest of the project. And most of it is busy work at best, and even harmful in many cases. These aren't isolated incidents. I encounter this stuff pretty regularly no matter what industry I happen to be working in at the time. It's everywhere. The worst part about it is the people that write the regulations very often don't understand not just the industry being regulated, but basic principles of business. If I was to field a guess, I'd say that about 60-75% of the things we're asked to comply with are frankly a waste of time and offer no practical benefit. Stuff that was clearly written by people who just don't understand how things work.
I do in science, but I also hate hate it with a deep passion. My middle school/high school years were the worst because I rarely understood anything. I listened, took notes, did my homework just to end up getting a 60 percent on almost all my tests and exams. I tried to tell my parents I was struggling and I might need a tutor or a visit to some brain doctor to see if there was anything wrong with me, but they never listened. All they told me is I'm lazy and not trying hard. I've been grounded so many times become of it, i've spend so many nights crying because I couldn't do it. Maybe it's my fault I did bad, maybe not. So that's why whenever someone mentions science, I just stay quiet. Sorry for the rant
because science isn't a belief system. It's a method that relies on skepticism to understand the world. You don't prove things in science you merely present the findings from your experiment then present your hypothesis. so people not believing in science is not the result of stupidity but rather people treating science as it really is. Something that maybe true and can have very strong evidence pointing to it being true, but ultimately be false as is the case for most scientific theory's. science is mostly trial and error after all.

Being skeptical about certain scientific notions doesn't mean people don't believe in science. Thinking the solutions to global warming aren't as simple as you say they are doesn't make someone a science denier. Believing that some vaccines are extremely dangerous to some individuals doesn't make someone an anti-vaxer. The fact that people dismiss an argument based on these false suppositions is why nothing gets done. Why doesn't this channel believe in logic?
When one's standards for agreeing with one field of science aren't the same as they are for another (ie agreeing with gravity and atomic theory, but not evolution), they they are a denier. They cherry pick what they want to believe, and dismiss what is inconvenient rather than going by what the research and evidence says. It's usually done to cling onto an old religion or tradition. It's the worst form of denial because it cherry picks and has no standards.

I was taught growing up that I was supposed to believe that Creation and the Great Flood were literal. So even into my 20's, I still believed in these literally. According to Neil deGrass Tyson, approximately half of all scientist have faith, like them I do too. Like Neil said, it's ok to have faith but keep it out of the science classroom.
I think that's called confirmation bias OR confirmation bias is a close relative to what you describe. I also think ALL people are guilty of this (including me) - it's just part of the human condition. And we have to actively be aware that it exists and work hard to minimize its impact on what/how we think. I also think everyone is a hypocrite (yes - including me). I had never heard of "hot cognition" before watching this video but I'm going to use it for the first time here - Hot cognition + Confirmation bias = FAIL (can't find the right words).
Reality is the thing that remains real regardless of anyone’s opinions. When climate changes hits them they will believe and they will want scientists and engineers to save them, not clergymen pedaling hope at inflated prices due to it’s created scarcity.
The truth: science is too complex. We can't be informed on every scientific topic certainly not to the degree of experts. The real problem is that we are prideful and don't like leaving our beliefs up to other people even when they are often much more informed than us. It has much less to do with evidence analysis. If you want people to accept science, support critical thinking in schools and reinforce teaching the scientific method so they understand how developed and well thought out the process is.
Science deniers should be denied access to all modern day tech, cars, public transport, computers, etc. and ask them again in a year what's their stance on science.

I have a friend like this, when he gets angry, he just stops thinking and instead of trying to figure out whether a statement is correct, he tries to find ways to figure out why it is wrong. Even when faced with overwhelming evidence he delays the verification of this evidence in until he's exhausted by trying to find a reason why he's correct.
He's not stupid, he's actually pretty smart, it's just that you need to wait till they calm down and then provide more evidence.

My take is as long as someone's opinion (in this case, on science) isn't doing anything any harm, then why bother. Now the President-Elect and his associated peoples could really cause harm with their beliefs so that is bad.
My dad on the other hand, isn't really doing any more harm than the average person with his disbelief in global warming, so I don't bother arguing with him about it. I don't doubt the existence of climate change, or even that mankind has contributed, even significantly to it. What I'm opposed to is more government regulation. Regulation is expensive, even for those already in compliance because you have to prove you're in compliance.
But in terms of people 'not believing science' -- some of us have been around long enough to know that "science" (as broad and indeterminate as that term is) keeps changing its mind on things (speaking broadly, not specifically about climate change). Wait a decade or two or three and a new theory and the predominating ideas will have changed. Someone can be 100% convinced of something today, only to find out in a few years that they were wrong. Textbooks will have been published in that time, laws may have been enacted to enforce the predominate views at the time, etc. only to discover later on that they were wrong. I think (again, speaking broadly, not climate change) that as a society we (1) act too quickly on ideas that are still just theories, and (2) are too accepting of working theories as fact.
In other words, some of us get tired of "science" crying wolf, and being forced to change education and behavior based on ideas that are still just working theories.

However, there is a considerable amount of evidence that climate change is not only real but a significant threat. Debating this only wastes valuable time that should be used to make any improvements we can towards our planet and the future of humanity. It's that serious. Govt regulations are tough and costly (and arguably inefficient sometimes- trying to be fair) but at least it's a step in the right direction to do the right thing. If govt regs are too tough for corporations to comply then why not negotiate a better solution? Instead of condemning climate and earth science why not bring those same experts and engineers in to come up with ways to make compliance easier (faster and cheaper)?
Also look to the folks with a "Startup" mindset. I'd imagine some amazing results if you brought that kind of talent to a roundtable with scientists and engineers.

The whole idea of using government regulations to fix things is what bugs me. I mean, we don't have to regularly file reports proving that we didn't murder someone. Or that we didn't speed while we were driving. For the most part we're allowed to run our own lives and then the government only steps in when there's an obvious infraction.
Not only is it expensive to not be in compliance, or even expensive to be in compliance, it's expensive just to run the tests to know if you're in compliance.

I also hate that the political left tries to cram regulations down our throats. There has to be a better way.
You don't understand what Regulations are then. Regulations put in place by government are PROTECTIONS. In every instance where you see the word regulation, replace it with protection and see if you want to get rid of them. Every protection the government enacts has a basis in something that has gone wrong. Protections against corporations dumping toxic waste in your water, or allowing your employer to force you to work in unsafe conditions, or not requiring safety devices cars or other heavy machinery. Someone has gotten hurt, sick, or died for nearly every protection the government has put in place.
Those are most definitely not the type of regulations I've had to deal with in my career. I'm a contract software developer and have done projects over thirty years in numerous industries, and what I've seen is far different than what you're describing.
What I've seen and had to comply with are things like regularly capturing and sending data to regulatory agencies. Studies that have to be done before a project can start (even when the outcome is known ahead of time). Processes and procedures that are regularly audited, documentation that has to be kept, certifications that have to be held by people working on a project, etc. It takes up a huge amount of time and effort. Depending on the project and the industry, compliance training, implementation, testing, and certification often takes far more time than the rest of the project. And most of it is busy work at best, and even harmful in many cases.
These aren't isolated incidents. I encounter this stuff pretty regularly no matter what industry I happen to be working in at the time. It's everywhere.
The worst part about it is the people that write the regulations very often don't understand not just the industry being regulated, but basic principles of business. If I was to field a guess, I'd say that about 60-75% of the things we're asked to comply with are frankly a waste of time and offer no practical benefit. Stuff that was clearly written by people who just don't understand how things work.

I do in science, but I also hate hate it with a deep passion. My middle school/high school years were the worst because I rarely understood anything. I listened, took notes, did my homework just to end up getting a 60 percent on almost all my tests and exams. I tried to tell my parents I was struggling and I might need a tutor or a visit to some brain doctor to see if there was anything wrong with me, but they never listened. All they told me is I'm lazy and not trying hard. I've been grounded so many times become of it, i've spend so many nights crying because I couldn't do it. Maybe it's my fault I did bad, maybe not. So that's why whenever someone mentions science, I just stay quiet.

because science isn't a belief system. It's a method that relies on skepticism to understand the world. You don't prove things in science you merely present the findings from your experiment then present your hypothesis. so people not believing in science is not the result of stupidity but rather people treating science as it really is. Something that maybe true and can have very strong evidence pointing to it being true, but ultimately be false as is the case for most scientific theory's. science is mostly trial and error after all.
I'm not going to listen to you, I only believe in SCIENCE
People have the right to have opinions but people don't have the right to their own facts.

science is not something that is to be 'believed' in. no matter how hard you disagree with gravity, it will work on you every time.
Separate emotions from facts. Change your views to fit the facts, don't alter the facts to fit your views. Facts are facts, and science is true even if you don't believe in it.

Resistance to silly doom laden headlines done by clueless media has resulted in a backlash against against the concept by those who are incapable of doing the math themselves.
It's like if there was a book that is supposed to be absolute fact but is constantly being rewritten and edited because parts are constantly being proven wrong. Now how am I supposed to believe that this edition is 100% right? What's more why do liberals feel the need to shame and insult me for not taking this book at face value.
The problem is you don't have to believe in science. Science is as close to reality as you can get with the information available, not something you can choose to not believe in - you can only ignore it.
I have some religious neighbour's (I'm fine with them being religious) but they don't believe in science and I hate that so much

Being skeptical about certain scientific notions doesn't mean people don't believe in science. Thinking the solutions to global warming aren't as simple as you say they are doesn't make someone a science denier. Believing that some vaccines are extremely dangerous to some individuals doesn't make someone an anti-vaxer. The fact that people dismiss an argument based on these false suppositions is why nothing gets done. Why doesn't this channel believe in logic?
When one's standards for agreeing with one field of science aren't the same as they are for another (ie agreeing with gravity and atomic theory, but not evolution), they they are a denier. They cherry pick what they want to believe, and dismiss what is inconvenient rather than going by what the research and evidence says. It's usually done to cling onto an old religion or tradition. It's the worst form of denial because it cherry picks and has no standards.
Because sometimes the evidence has no scientific basis. Remember Eugenics? If not, you would do well to recap that era when Eugenics was the accepted science of the day. Then you will understand why no scientist/politician wants to talk about it.
I know this was 6 years ago but I feel like America is less and less science based. I just like to see the evidence and the science then go with that. It doesn’t matter what I want, just what is facts. Why is logic and science just being thrown out the window? I just don’t get it.
I was taught growing up that I was supposed to believe that Creation and the Great Flood were literal. So even into my 20's, I still believed in these literally. According to Neil deGrass Tyson, approximately half of all scientist have faith, like them I do too. Like Neil said, it's ok to have faith but keep it out of the science classroom.
Some people hear what they want to hear, and try to ignore the rest. To be fair that seems like most people.
I think that's called confirmation bias OR confirmation bias is a close relative to what you describe. I also think ALL people are guilty of this (including me) - it's just part of the human condition. And we have to actively be aware that it exists and work hard to minimize its impact on what/how we think. I also think everyone is a hypocrite (yes - including me).

Just because everyone doesn't agree with a particular "theory", doesn't mean they don't believe in "science". It's not all or nothing.

Science is a buzz kill, life is so much more fun mythical and full of magic when you don't understand anything.
Reality is the thing that remains real regardless of anyone’s opinions. When climate changes hits them they will believe and they will want scientists and engineers to save them, not clergymen pedaling hope at inflated prices due to it’s created scarcity.
The more people push, the more others will reject.
The truth: science is too complex. We can't be informed on every scientific topic certainly not to the degree of experts. The real problem is that we are prideful and don't like leaving our beliefs up to other people even when they are often much more informed than us. It has much less to do with evidence analysis. If you want people to accept science, support critical thinking in schools and reinforce teaching the scientific method so they understand how developed and well thought out the process is.

Science deniers should be denied access to all modern day tech, cars, public transport, computers, etc. and ask them again in a year what's their stance on science.
