    4.3 GHz on a 6C/12T CPU using a $25 generic cooler. Not sure if you really hit the silicon lottery or if aliexpress injects steroids in their heatsinks.
    Favorite build from you so far!

      I tested two Xeon X5670 and one X5675 with custom watercooling. They all blast easily to 4.2GHz (mild voltage), to 4.4GHz requires proper settings, beyond 4.4GHz is more silicon lottery but with a good overclocking motherboard and very good cooling 4.6+ isn't that rare (high vcore)...

      Thanks Ozi! For me, this is what is so much fun about the older hardware - you can have a cheap gamble at the silicon lottery! It's also the exact reason I went ham on the x58 boards when I was hunting in Japan, love my x58 and Westmere Xeons, easily my favourite line up of all time.

    Great build. I think the X58 platform is amazing. I saved so much money with an X5675 12gb triple channel ram and a real lucky find with a new in box gigabyte ex58 motherboard sat around in an IT workshop. With the money I saved I bought a hybrid 1080 ti. The card isn't bottlenecked at all at 75fps which is what my 1440p monitor runs at. It would be comfortable at 100+ fps easily as my overclock is 4.5ghz. You cannot dismiss this platform.

      bclk 200, 23 multi, 1.45v, c1e enabled, 3400mhz uncore, i run this thing with a 360mm AIO, previously with a hyper212 evo.
      I plopped this X5675 in a few months ago from my previous x5650 that didnt clock as high (4.4 with 1.42v, but did 2 core turbo to 4.6) and ran that for about a year and a half, chip is still great, clocks the same and all. These chips are tough, only thing that really degrades them are high voltages on the QPI/vtt (over 1.35v per intel max spec)

    • @andrewmcewan9145
      @andrewmcewan9145 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      nice i currently have an x5650 that was at 4.5 but dropped down to 4.4 for 1600mhz ram and the temps where to high same ips as my 2600 (nonK) @ 4.1 did well over 1.35 on the qpi due to an locked uncore multiplayer for years but finally solved that can confirm that degradation did happen keep it under 1.35v they will last an while. though coffie is now pulling over 50% ipc gains I am now tempted to do an system update.

    • @Najvalsa
      @Najvalsa 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Impressive. I'm still on the fence of going past the max spec'ed VID of 1.35V myself, but a lot of people like yourself seem to run fine above that as long as things are kept cool. The Gulftown i7s which are pretty much the same part I think are spec'ed up to 1.375V, so who knows what's going on there. But at 1.45V I feel like you could get more out of it though, I have my X5670 at 4.4Ghz on my Gigabyte X58A-UD3R with the following:
      LLC - Level 2
      VCore - 1.35V
      QPI/Vtt - 1.335
      CPU PLL - 1.98V
      IOH and QPI/Vtt PLL - 1.18V
      ICH - 1.14V

    • @detmer87
      @detmer87 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      HappyBeezerStudios - by Lord_Mogul X5460 is a 45nm, X5670 is a 32nm Westmere. A good Xeon Westmere CPU does 4GHz with stock vcore. Sweetspot is at 4.25~4.4GHz

    • @KitKatFresse
      @KitKatFresse 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Detmer, the CPU has to be 100% stable, everything above 190Mhz BCLK doesn't work all that well, I use it @1,35V 190FSB with multi on auto (ie. idle 2,2GHz, normal 3,8GHz and boost 4,0GHz) I can run cinebench well above 4,3GHz if i want (@ ~1,45V) but since i use the rig for gaming and encoding i preffer to have a huge safety margin with clocks and voltage... Because the worst thing that could happen is that the system crashes after ~8 hours of encoding/appliying some sort of image correction (for example stabilization), because that would force me to start all over again :(

    Rule number 1: Don't cheap out on the PSU!
    I learn't the hard way when one burn't out my hard drive and DVD drives and the motherboard was never the same again.
    Ironically the power supply still worked but it obviously wasn't supplying the correct clean voltage so I binned it and have never used a generic PSU again for any build except a skip build which literally cost me nothing.
    This build is far too expensive to risk it as the Powerman PSU's recieve very mixed reviews. A few dollars more would get something that is genuinley considered reliable from a reputable brand.

      Frog Cartoons Are Racist Nazis The PSU is from IN WIN. There is a indepth review of the 600watt version at hardwaresecrets.com.
      The quality and performance is quite solid. The 600 watt did sell for 89 dollars in 2010.
      I did look it up because by the looks you would assume another Chinese risky PSU...

    I just built this exact system a week ago with a gtx 1080 and my x5670 @ 4.3ghz! 90-140fps in bf1 ultra 1440p thanks for the vid! if you disable Hyperthreading youll get probably 200mhz more, you'll be able to increase the voltage since hyper threading makes it run hotter. games only use 6 cores right now

    • @TheSilviu8x
      @TheSilviu8x 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Derick Christopherson, I've got 4.9ghz turbo and 4.7ghz on all cores with HT, under load, on the same motherboard and x5650. The cooler is an aio from ITEK 240mm, for 65 euro.

    • @detmer87
      @detmer87 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might want to check Battlefield 1 multiplayer with 6 threads and rerun with 12 threads. Battlefield 1 performers much better with 12 threads.
      X5675 4.6GHz user + GTX 1070.

    • @BoggedBogdanoff
      @BoggedBogdanoff 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      in dx12? I get stutters on dx12, which is sorta a common thing with the game. I can only get 4.1ghz without overheating and hyper threading on with my hyper 212. I've gotta use 1.387v with hyperthreading off too get 4.3ghz. im comfortable with anything less then 90c. I think i got a bad overclocking cpu honestly

    • @BoggedBogdanoff
      @BoggedBogdanoff 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Detmer I just tried with hyperthreading @ 4.3ghz, seen the same framerates. I even tried 768p so my gpu wouldn't be pegged at 100%, this made the gpu go too around 60%. the cpu would only hit 50% and it would run hotter , I'm assuming because it wasn't using more then 6 threads like I thought. I tried dx11 and dx12. So hyperthreading made no difference in bf1 for me. But once games use more then 6 cores that I play, I'll definitely enable hyperthreading again.

    I really like what you do with this older hardware. I too have been playing with X58 systems. Most current is an X5660 @ 4.5GHz with a GTX 1080 Ti. I lose about 15% over my i7-7700K @ 5GHz. The price/performance ratio is pretty great, however most people balk at sticking a $700 video card in system with a $25 CPU. Ha!
    I find that a GTX 980 plays very well with the X58 system. I have a GTX 780 that does pretty well too. These will be donated to friends that don't have the income to buy a system for their self. Keep up the good work mate!

    i was rockin the x5670 for a bit on the ROG mATX gene ii, and then later the gene iii, and i was able to run 4.4ghz on custom water all day and temps were great. Paired with a HD 7990 OCd to the moon. It wasn't until the 7700k @ 5.2 ghz with nvme and Pascal came together, that I felt like I had a faster system. So much snappier! Just got notified earlier today that my 8700k is being delivered finally, so I can return to 6c/12t glory!

    Nothing currently ages as gracefully as the phenomenal X58 platform! If you already have a good X58 board and triple channel RAM, you have an abundant choice of used 6c/12t Xeons that are dirt cheap! Also, nearly all of them can reach freqs above 4.2GHz, can be easily cooled (soldered IHS) and are strong enough to push way above 100fps in games when OCd. The triple channel RAM allows fast and smooth work in productivity tasks as well. Furthermore, as 6c/12c is slowly becoming the new 4c/8c the X58 will surpass the beloved Sandy bridge in games too. Absolutely brilliant and timeless platform!
