Some things I've learned online, and from my own testing: BCLK's over 200 are much harder to stabilise than ones under. Loosening your RAM's settings helps to achieve higher BCLK's. But it may not be worth it in terms of performance. Also, increasing PCIe frequency helps. Uncore should be whatever you can get out of it. Mine's at 3.6GHz, whilst my RAM's at 1.6GHz. So 2.25x more than my RAM. Perhaps the 2x has more to do with bottlenecks rather than stability. Keep CPU voltage at 1.45V max. You can go past that, at up to 1.55V IIRC (these bigger chips can take it, if you can cool it), but you'll be scraping for Hz at that point, and it just wouldn't be worth the extra power and heat. Average OC limit is 4.4GHz on these CPUs, and that's generally achievable at up to ~1.42V. So no need to go past 1.45V. +10mV = +1 *C. So 1.3V to 1.4V is a 10 *C increase in temps. CPU PLL's voltage limit is 2V. It has a minor affect on CPU temps. QPI/DRAM/Vtt's voltage limit is 1.35V. It is the voltage for the Uncore. Going past 1.35V degrades the CPU super fast. Like within a year's time, super fast. At most, it should have a 0.5V difference between it and the RAM voltage for best stability. So if your RAM voltage is 1.5V, then the min QPI/DRAM/Vtt voltage is 1V. IOH voltage is for the NorthBridge. Easiest test for its stability is Cinebench. Stick to 1.25V max. The limit is like 1.5V, but I've found that going past 1.2V made absolutely no difference for me. It just resulted in higher NB temps. This and the QPI/DRAM/Vtt PLL voltage should be identical for the best stability. ICH voltage is for the SouthBridge. Setting this up to 1.2V can help with I/O instability at high BCLK's.
Cheers. But I know what you're talking about with the voltages. Trust me, it's completely safe. That VID range is just what they can guarantee for maximum life of the silicon which is 20 - 30 years, and what they define the boost algorithm around. It's basically the stock voltage range, more than it is the voltage limit range. But by how much it shortens the life span of the CPU to go out of this range, is something only the engineers at Intel can tell us. Although, it's a safe bet that as long as you can keep it cool enough, then you'll be able to get over 10 years of life out of it, no worries. Actually, if you look at Sandy Bridge's datasheet, Sandy Bridge being built on the exact same process node as Westmere, it says that max safe voltage is 1.52V. And if you go into your BIOS, you'll often find the Vcore setting changes colour to red/whatever it has defined as dangerous, at ~1.52V. You can also look at it another way. If current 14nm CPUs, which are much more sensitive than 32nm ones since they're much denser, can handle 1.45V, then these older ones should be able to do it no sweat, and they do. What you're probably reading online in terms of degrading, is the QPI/DRAM/Vtt voltage. For that, you HAVE to stick to the VID limits of 1.35V for Westmere, and 1.375V for Gulftown. This is the voltage that quickly degrades CPUs. At the end of the day though, anything outside of stock is unknown territory. It just depends on what you're comfortable with, and as you say, these CPUs are cheap enough anyways. Those Gulftown's are pretty cool though. I'm thinking of getting one to play around with, just because of that high-bin, and the fully-unlocked multiplier. But your results with them are prime examples of the problems with having a high BCLKs on these Westmere-based processors, or any processors really. Much more voltage is required to stabilise the CPU, than it is with low BCLK and high multiplier, due to the nature of what the BCLK does. So you've got some very nice results that are near impossible to get with Westmere-EP.
@@Najvalsa my original comment: Nice info. But from what I read in the past, the x58 6 core cpus shouldn't be pushed past 1.4ghz for a daily build if you want it to last. They are more sensitive to voltage than the 4 core variants. According to Intels data sheet, it says "safe" voltage is up to 1.35v is for the x5600 series and up to 1.375v with the w3600 series. Both chips past those limits up to 1.4v shortens the CPU life. Past 1.4v severely degrades CPU life. I have read really old posts of people with their new $1000 i7-980x's killing them past 1.4v. at normal temperatures. But hey, these xenons are cheap now so do as you please :) my favorite chip is the w3680 (cheaper, xenon version of the 980x) which is unlocked and gives you just a bit more of what Intel says is "safe" voltage to play with than the x5600 series. 1.375v vs 1.35v. Also I hit 4.41ghz at 1.344v with the w3680 and 4.5ghz at the same voltage the w3690. The next step up on them required going over the 1.375v to be completely stable and I didn't want to do that. That was with just using the unlocked multi. (Except for the slight bump in baseclock from the xmp profile for 2000mhz ram on the w3690). Maybe could get more with the same voltage with the baseclock overclock method and bumping up all these other values, but I never did try that as I have always had unlocked sku's. (I7-975, w3680, & w3690)
Another tip is to get that multiplier straight to the highest you can, As for voltages I'd used a x5650 running at 4.62ghz @1.55v under a alphacool eisbaer 360mm and it was perfectly safe, I wouldn't recommend over 1.55v for the x56xx's
shaunskii - rubbish, intel's datasheet is nothing more than a "Guide" under common cooling solutions as long as you don't go above 1.6v it'll be fine and you'll require a excellent cooling solution to handle higher voltages.

I managed a 4.375 on air noctua dh-15 with a 5675 wasn't too bad with the video evgas setup was a little different but achieved the same results at least lol

I just did my first ever overclock following your guide. Had my old i7 950 on an Asus p6x58d-e motherboard collecting dust. Bought a xeon x5660 for super cheap and a new cpu cooler and decided to give it a try. Only 4.2ghz and I allready have double my i7's score in cinebench. At 70C I feel like I can push it some more. Some tips for anyone getting BSOD's from Overclocking X58: 1. Uncore stability varies widely between chips even at max safe voltage (1.35) if you see IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL BSOD, it probably means your uncore is 2 high. (ive noticed a range of 3200-3800 on my chips) 2. C-States will BSOD you silly or cause latency issues, turn it off!
The strange thing is, that in my situation it seems to be the exact opposite. Well, the BSOD thing does not happen to often, but as far as i have experienced i have more BSOD's when i turn C-state off.
Ever since I threw a cheap $40 xeon in my machine to upgrade it, I have been fascinated by these chips. They are extremely high quality and dirt cheap for what they are. I'm glad most noobs think you can't game with xeon. Keeps things cheap for us!
Really useful guide, will save us X58ers lots of time, there are so many variable settings and possible combinations ! My UD3R rev 2 is currently running an X5680 at 4 Ghz with 4.3 Ghz turbo 1.26 V core cinebench score 959 but using this guide I should be able to bump it up a bit higher. I've been running my system from new in 2010 ish, it originally had an i7 930, which I swapped for an X5650 then a X5680 wth higher multi. The X5680s are now available on Ali Express for £32.00 shipped. I would have upgraded to an all new PC last year but these Xeons are so cheap and have given my "old" PC such a massive boost it's now got plenty of power for now at least. I wonder how many people have an X58 board and don't realise they can upgrade so easily and cheaply with a used Xeon !

Of course the multi drops if you leave speed step enabled in BIOS (Allso make sure to disable any C-States in BIOS)... Allso CPU PLL never brought me anything on these CPUs... For high BCLK (215++) you need to up PCIe frequency, helps on X5650 and L/E chips EDIT: For cinebench you want to up NB clock 2000MHz memory is bottlenecked by your NB running at 3200MHz 3800+ is what you're looking for :)
You'll hit a limit somewhere between 4200 and 4300MHz Uncore allso there is no real point in running memory above ~950 CL7-7-7 that's the point where it turns into pure CPU scaling :) EDIT: Not that any of these numbers matter for daily of course :)
The best overclock guide for X58... i really hate most of the guides out there that did not teach you very details how to even get a basic one running. At least this video gurantees a safe point for 1 proper one.

I love x58 so much. I was actually in the process of re-overclocking my w3680 when you uploaded this video. 4.6GHz @ 1.45v is pretty amazing from a $70 chip that's 6 cores and 12 threads. Edit:) got my w3680 to run 4.805MHz @ 1.608V, running my ram around 2136MHz in triple channel, multiplier @ X36 (it can go all the way up to around 56), bus 133MHz, and QPI link in CPU-Z reads 3203.55MHz
1.45 vcore seems about right. My W3680 runs 4.4Ghz daily with 1.4 vcore. These motherboards are getting pretty damn old too, depending on how many hours of hard work they've been put through the caps could be degraded enough to do a poor job smoothing out the voltage.
I just bought a P6T Deluxe + X5650 + 6x 2GB of DDR3 1600Mhz and a Noctua U12S for 170€, it is coming in next week, can't wait to start overclocking it! Love the channel. After watching your channel a couple years ago I narrowed my purchase down to the w3680. I had some struggles with overclocking and even fried some ram but it seems VERY stable and I'm VERY happy. I was able to get a nice x28 ratio with a BCLK of 150 giving me a VERY stable 4.2ghz with everything else on auto. I'm only air cooling and it doesnt seem to mind at all., Keep up the good work. I still love my x58 system.

I've got the Asus Rampage Gene II, I need Hyperthreading and all 6 cores/12 threads, and am just using a simple 1 fan CPU tower cooler, so I think 4.5ghz is a good goal. Just got 990 Cinebench core at only 4.2ghz, this CPU is still such a beast and hugely versatile.
@@trv88r why are you even bothering the Marvell 9128 (88x91xx on post if I remember correctly) it's the shittiest Sata3 controller exciting and shouldn't be bothered with using. just get a cheap Sata3 controller from AliExpress with an ASM 1061 chip in it, works like a charm for me. BTW, do you have RC Bluetooth working on your phone? if so, stable?

For years I've never worked out why my cpu would not hit over 3.7ghz, seemed any time I disabled speedstep or power limiter it would just baulk and crash when it hit 4ghz, I followed your voltage settings (I really have no idea about those was just using auto) and I took my ratio down to 20x as 21x wasn't an option and now I'm running stable at 4ghz with a bcklk of 200 and ram sitting at 1600mhz which it's designed to do. Thank you very much! My system is now a lot more stable than before as it was constantly thermal clocking.
Nice! I have my x5675 running stable at 4.37 ghz, ram at 1520mhz and my cinebench R15 score is 1006. I'll try to overclock ram and see if it improves :D UPDATE : well, to be sure I ran a bench before overclocking, and I got 1008. After overclocking ram to 1900mhz, I got 1006, so basically same performances. I think it's about the the timings you suggest, probably they are good only for very cheap ram. Since I'm not a great ram overclocker, I'll just set it back to how it was 8)
Getting a very similar score with a 4.5ghz overclock myself - it feels good rocking such an awesome cpu (and the whole X58 platform) in 2018 and seeing such great results

You will have to get a new Case. Happened to me. Got a Dell T3500 for nothing. Bought a EVGA X58 board and 24GB of ram off a guy locally. Found out the I/O shield is built into the damn case. No worries found another killer deal locally for a better case overall.

That’s really helpful, however I already oc my w3670@4.4ghz@1.4v on my gigabyte x58 extreme with water cooling on the northbridge, the best x58 mobo I’ve ever had! I have a problem however wich is my ram, it’s a green Samsung 3x4gb kit and I can only run it at 1408mhz as it wont boot at 1800mhz... So I did tweak the timings and now it’s at 7-8-7-22 but only at 1408... I’m so mad it can’t go 1800 even at 10-10-10-30 or something !
i have gskill ram 1600 mhz 9 9 9 24 - and i have problems getting it to boot beyond 1400 mhz too. I tried the dram voltage at 1.6, maybe is should try 1.64 ... IDK

Get Thaiphoon Burner, Read a stick, view it as a Report, get a detailed view, and then tell me the XMP profile settings in nanoseconds. Ok so I tried to set it to 10-11-11-31 at 1.64 and it wasn’t booting at 1800mhz, then I tried all auto at 1.64 and it wasn’t booting, so I tried to lower the timings even more and I’m now stable at 7-8-7-11 (is that normal?!?) And here is the taiphoon screenshot : m.imgur.com/TP6xt8O
ThePs4DansLaChatteATaMere78 It's strange, but RAM's strange in general. So nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe the RAM likes X timing to be in a certain range, or a round number, or an even number, or a like even multiple of the latency, etc. Especially since the sub-timings are derived from the primary's. Or it could be some other component in your system. There are many reasons for it. It's like why it's thought that Samsung B-Die works the best with Zen systems is because of the even timings. But there aren't any universal timings that work on all RAM. It's different for each type of die, and kit. But okay so up at the top click on Report, then display the info in nanoseconds.

Using this guide, I overclocked my Xeon W3690 Westmere hexacore (running on a Rampage Gene III motherboard w/ 48 gigs of DDR3 RAM (8gb x 6)) to 4.41 ghz and my RAM to 2285mhz. I was also able to get a rock solid Uncore speed of ~3800 mhz. I'm now rocking a mad solid 1034 in Cinebench R15 and a multicore Geekbench score of 19032 (which is roughly on par with a stock frequency i7-7700k, which barely cracks 20k). Additionally, Geekbench puts my memory bandwidth at roughly that of DDR4-2400 -- and since I've got nice "gamer" RAM, I've got the timings tight as piss, too. I feel like I lucked out and got an extremely well-binned chip as I didn't even have to push the voltages that much. I could doubtlessly push it higher (as I've had successful boots, on air, at upwards of 4.6ghz), but as I'm on air, I don't want to risk it by pushing things too hard; right now the system is stable af, runs cool and I didn't have to get scary with the voltage at all. Liquid cooled, I bet I could complete a Cinebench run at 5ghz and get somewhere in the ballpark of 1100, but I'd definitely not leave it there for general use! TYC, you really knows your stuff when it comes to X58. Thanks to you, I've basically got the equivalent of a MUCH newer system (with a few caveats i.e. PCIE 2.0 rather than 3.0) for way less money.
Thanks for this tutorial, copied your settings almost exactly with just a bit of tweaking. Just got my X5650 today from China - cost 12$ US. Put in my Asus Rampage Formula 3 and already have a stable 4.2Ghz at 1.35V for the CPU. Temps are in the 60 degrees - using Corsair H100 AIO cooler.
Your video is perfect! Just got the x5675 to 4.2 GHz but, unfortunately, the memory oc didn't work at 2000mhz. It's running smooth! Thank you so much, it helped me a lot. My previous CPU was an i7-920. I am grateful that I discovered these xeon processors, better late than never.
I just recently finished rebuilding my original Gigabyte GA-X58a-UD3R v.1 gaming rig as a file/infrastructure/game server for the house, and overclocked it to the gills after watching several of your videos and reading commentary. I managed to pick up a Xeon W3690 for $80 to replace my original i7-920, and cranked it up to 4.46GHz (193x23) with a x19 uncore multiplier, with my 24GB RAM running at 1552MHz. I was hoping for 4.5GHz, but it couldn't quite make it. It's rock solid, but the north bridge gets very toasty because the airflow in my case isn't ideal. It soundly stomps my Ryzen 5 2400g (overclocked to 3.95GHz all core, 3400MHz DDR4) with Cinebench R15 scores just over 1000 vs 865. Overall, I am very happy with the results and want to build another one if I can find a reasonably priced, high performance X58 motherboard. It's running great, but I am finding that these particular boards are pretty pricey here in the US, so I am curious what your favorite X58 motherboards are.
Just upgraded my i7 920 to a x5675 overclocked it put in a 1660 super and am getting 60 fps in Flightsim 2020 in my Montana hometown at Mostly high settings. Ultra on clouds and a few other things. These are great old computers. I'm sure I'll have to lower some settings to fly around NYC but this is just great for a 12 year old system. 1080p
Way cool video. I haven't poked around in a Tylersburg OC for yrs , since my ROG Rampage II Gene as I moved quickly to Dual Xeon and they didn't allow for much if any OC (evga CR2 does). I'd like to add; for ease of testing, unplug everything except the basics. I'd even use 1 single HDD w/ a basic, clean Windows install. Have a restore so you can to get right back into it if all goes wrong. And believe me, if new to this, things may go wrong so have patients & prepare to learn as you go. Take lots of notes on paper or snaps pix to review later. Document your steps. Overclocking the world, 1 PC at a time
i know this is a year old but for anyone else watching.. the x5660 is a locked multiplier cpu. the base clock is 21, the boost clock goes like this, 24 23 22 22. depending on the core usage. thats why it bounces around.. if you are lucky to have a x58 bios that lets you select the multiplier after disabling the turbo, you can lock it to 23. unfortunately i think most are locked at 21 or auto if you disable the turbo. the same goes for the x5670 and x5690, but those the turbo goes up to 26 25 24 24 and 27 26 25 25.. and the x58 boards only go to 21 so this is why they arent so popular for oc. you will get a higher boost, but the base clock will be the same as the x5660.. especially if you disable the turbo.
I'l keep your video as a reference for when i'l do my overclocking. I will be swapping my Xeon quad core X3520 for a X5675, that will be to upgrade and renovate my old Workstation Z400 and give it a bit more life, thanks for your work!
X58 does rule, so glad I bought a Xeon 6 core -- 5680, got it for a low $15.00 US, however the board is an old Super Micro X58 - but could not pass up the $43 dollar price tag -- ebay. Runs great but eventually I will find a more recent X58 - right now w/out overclocking this computer runs solid and so stable, saved over $200.00 in CPU and motherboard costs
I got a free ASUS P6T6 WS from my uni's electronics dump. Decided to get a W3680 for it. Got it running at 4.5 GHz, 1.33 V now (150 BCLK x30) with 18GB of Registered RAM at 1500MHz without much effect! Once I get the better thermal paste I ordered (what I got is that 1 dollar stuff from eBay), I'll try to get it even higher ^.^
the "uclk must be twice the memory speed" thing was for the nehalem/bloomfield chips which wouldn't work well with less than 2x uclk, the westmere/gulftown chips work fine at 1.5x
4.4Ghz here. 22x200. I'm using my X5675 on my original Asus Sabertooth X58 mobo from 2010 and it still running great, with a GTX 780 and nice samsung SSD. Tried to get uncore stable to 4ghz but it only barely wants to do 3800mhz or less. Cinebench score = 1020. The one weird thing I had to do was increase IOH to 1.20v, and my CPU is at 1.4v, QPI 1.3v so pretty high volts overall. Maybe i can lower it later. Also i wanted to say THANKS, your knowledge is great and you covered everything important, and the BIOS of this P6T deluxe and my X58 sabertooth are exactly the same, so it helped.
Great tutorial, I was having problems with my x58a-ud3r and a xeon 5650 processor overclocking it. I would get BSOD every now and then until i bumped up the voltage a bit more as you indicated in this video.
I'm very happy you didn't tell people to down clock there QTI freq to something nuts like 3.2GT/s I've seen some many tuts for x58 saying to lower that an sure you can clock higher with it super low if you you want to kill your PCIe/GPU transfer rate. Those xeons are 6.4GT/s stock i believe just like there golf town cousins,I always set that at 6.4 stock and let it rise with the overclock,usually ends up around 7.6GT/s with 4.5 on the cpu core. Some motherboards let you drop that setting to crazy low values killing your transfer rate of your PCIe lanes,So your CPU is cranked to 5.1GHz but can barely feed the GPU at 3.2GT/s transfer rate.
Didnt need another project, but found an asus p6x58d premium with a 960 at goodwill for $7. Awesome. Ordered a 5675 for $15. Already had ram, case, psu, hdd, but gonna order ssd, and a water cooler. Should be a decent cheap system
I actually tend to prefer the W36xx series of x58 Xeons to the X56xx series for single CPU builds. They cost more, but having an unlocked multiplier gives way more flexibility and eases the overclock process significantly and can result in more stable builds. With some boards, BCLK can get a bit iffy if you push it hella hard and requires a lot more tweaking. With a W series, a mild-moderate BLCK boost (or sometimes none at all) paired with a raised multiplier makes it much easier to get those sweet 1000+ CB scores. In fact, with my most recent build, it was as easy as setting the CPU multiplier to 33 and leaving the BCLK stock at 133. I didn't even touch any other settings, and this alone was sufficient to get a 1009 CB score. I could likely push it higher by giving the BCLK a mild push (or leaving it and pumping more voltage into the CPU to get it to 34) but even as is, I've broken the 1000 CB barrier with a rock stable system and am super happy with it.
It is actually possible to install the P6T workstation bios on the regular P6T deluxe, and it completely unlocks the multiplier beyond 21! I have this working on my x58 rig :)
Nice! I am able to get 4.23ghz on my EVGA FTW / x5650. I’d love to hit 1000 on Cinebench but It comes in at its best of 958. Good enough and I’m achieving that on 1.275v which is fine for me for everyday use.
6 weeks ago I pickup up a Combo: ASUS P6T Deluxe v2, i7-920, OCZ Gold 6gb Triple 1600MHz for $100.00 on Craigslist. I haven't built it yet, I'll be swapping out my ASUS A8N-SLI Premium, AMD 4800+, LSI 9211-4i, Samsung 840 Pro 512, Antec p180 case. Just ordered a Xeon x5675 and CM 212 Evo from Amazon today. My plans are to find a used Asus 1070 Strix OC down the road. I'm so glad the x58 are still relevant today, it may be 10 years old, but it's new for me!
I have one of those boards and setting it to 1.3 volts makes the VRMs overheat. I'd recommend checking that and pointing it out since so many people don't think about it because the system is stable and the temperature doesn't show but I could guarantee you could burn your hand by touching the VRM heat sink. That part where the CPU ratio going down to 21 could have even been the VRM thermal throttling since there's no other indication but I'm not there so I'm not going to just say what it was for sure.
I have jury rigged an old socket 775 CPU cooler fan over my MOBOs VRM heatsink and heatpipes, makes a huge difference. Like you mentioned the temperature was too hot to touch but now is in the region of 50 - 60 degrees C.
The turbo not locking in is a known problem on the Asus P6T Deluxe V2. I run my X5675 on that board but with a crossflashed and slightly modded P6T WS Pro BIOS. There you get the High TDP override option if you leave the multiplier on Auto.

Made it to 4.5 on my x5660 under water with pretty high voltage Settled on 4.2 at 1.325v / 1600 ram. I have the same board btw and did notice It unfortunately wont run the boost multiplier of 23 on the x5660. I Bought an x5675 last month. Need to shuffle some builds around before getting to overclocking it. Excited, Id like to hit a 4.5 or higher 24/7 stable oc under water. This is a good guide to get people started though.
Just followed this guide and hit 4.48GHz @ 1.36v with my i7 980x + GA X58A UD5 and hit exactly 1000cb :D awesome considering I got the CPU, Mobo and 24Gb Corsair Dominator DDR3 for less than a used 7th gen i5 !!!!!
I recently got my x5670 and did a safe OC of 4ghz. It's been really hot here, and ambient temps in the house have been 23c. 10 min tress tests got CPU temps up to 78 degrees. I had been running my vcore at 1.3 like everyone suggested. But I've been lowering it bit by bit today and currently have it stable at 1.24v. The CPU generally hangs around 72C which is a significant drop. My hideous NB temps have dropped a couple of degrees too. I guess you like to push your CPU to the extreme, but I thought I'd just mention that a slightly milder OC can allow you to lower the vcore below what seems to be the general OC recommendation and remain stable with lower temps.
This helped me a lot. Thank you for spending time for this :) Also if things don't workout for any of you it might be that your BIOS isn't up to date. Mine wasn't even on the GIGABYTE website LOL
On x58 uncore (UCLK) has to be no lower than 2xDRAM for 45nm CPUs and 1.5xDRAM for 32nm CPUs. This means that with 1600MHz DRAM the uncore can be running at 2400MHz for 32nm instead of 3200MHz for 45nm, easier to get a stable high overclock when just the core is being pushed hard.
Hey FYI to also keep your x58 running into the future you can use a NVMe HDD with a adapter card and using Tiano core as a uefi wrapper.. This allows X58's to support NVMe SSD's and still curb stomp most new machines in the ground.. I still out perform New machines and see no reason to sidegrade to something else when this thing still shreds. You just have to find ways around getting the newer faster technology to work on the X58. You should make a video on setting up a NVMe SSD on a X58. I'm on my 3rd X58 board thank god for ebay. Oh and intel xeons =)
have you ever had issues with psu's not being compatible with x58 mobo? i've had issues where certain psu would not power up the mobo at all, something to do with the x58 knowing if a power supply is not providing 5v...
Some things I've learned online, and from my own testing:
BCLK's over 200 are much harder to stabilise than ones under.
Loosening your RAM's settings helps to achieve higher BCLK's. But it may not be worth it in terms of performance.
Also, increasing PCIe frequency helps.
Uncore should be whatever you can get out of it.
Mine's at 3.6GHz, whilst my RAM's at 1.6GHz. So 2.25x more than my RAM.
Perhaps the 2x has more to do with bottlenecks rather than stability.
Keep CPU voltage at 1.45V max.
You can go past that, at up to 1.55V IIRC (these bigger chips can take it, if you can cool it), but you'll be scraping for Hz at that point, and it just wouldn't be worth the extra power and heat.
Average OC limit is 4.4GHz on these CPUs, and that's generally achievable at up to ~1.42V. So no need to go past 1.45V.
+10mV = +1 *C. So 1.3V to 1.4V is a 10 *C increase in temps.
CPU PLL's voltage limit is 2V.
It has a minor affect on CPU temps.
QPI/DRAM/Vtt's voltage limit is 1.35V.
It is the voltage for the Uncore.
Going past 1.35V degrades the CPU super fast. Like within a year's time, super fast.
At most, it should have a 0.5V difference between it and the RAM voltage for best stability. So if your RAM voltage is 1.5V, then the min QPI/DRAM/Vtt voltage is 1V.
IOH voltage is for the NorthBridge.
Easiest test for its stability is Cinebench.
Stick to 1.25V max. The limit is like 1.5V, but I've found that going past 1.2V made absolutely no difference for me. It just resulted in higher NB temps.
This and the QPI/DRAM/Vtt PLL voltage should be identical for the best stability.
ICH voltage is for the SouthBridge.
Setting this up to 1.2V can help with I/O instability at high BCLK's.

But I know what you're talking about with the voltages. Trust me, it's completely safe. That VID range is just what they can guarantee for maximum life of the silicon which is 20 - 30 years, and what they define the boost algorithm around. It's basically the stock voltage range, more than it is the voltage limit range. But by how much it shortens the life span of the CPU to go out of this range, is something only the engineers at Intel can tell us. Although, it's a safe bet that as long as you can keep it cool enough, then you'll be able to get over 10 years of life out of it, no worries.
Actually, if you look at Sandy Bridge's datasheet, Sandy Bridge being built on the exact same process node as Westmere, it says that max safe voltage is 1.52V. And if you go into your BIOS, you'll often find the Vcore setting changes colour to red/whatever it has defined as dangerous, at ~1.52V.
You can also look at it another way. If current 14nm CPUs, which are much more sensitive than 32nm ones since they're much denser, can handle 1.45V, then these older ones should be able to do it no sweat, and they do.
What you're probably reading online in terms of degrading, is the QPI/DRAM/Vtt voltage. For that, you HAVE to stick to the VID limits of 1.35V for Westmere, and 1.375V for Gulftown. This is the voltage that quickly degrades CPUs.
At the end of the day though, anything outside of stock is unknown territory. It just depends on what you're comfortable with, and as you say, these CPUs are cheap enough anyways.
Those Gulftown's are pretty cool though. I'm thinking of getting one to play around with, just because of that high-bin, and the fully-unlocked multiplier. But your results with them are prime examples of the problems with having a high BCLKs on these Westmere-based processors, or any processors really. Much more voltage is required to stabilise the CPU, than it is with low BCLK and high multiplier, due to the nature of what the BCLK does. So you've got some very nice results that are near impossible to get with Westmere-EP.

Nice info. But from what I read in the past, the x58 6 core cpus shouldn't be pushed past 1.4ghz for a daily build if you want it to last. They are more sensitive to voltage than the 4 core variants. According to Intels data sheet, it says "safe" voltage is up to 1.35v is for the x5600 series and up to 1.375v with the w3600 series. Both chips past those limits up to 1.4v shortens the CPU life. Past 1.4v severely degrades CPU life. I have read really old posts of people with their new $1000 i7-980x's killing them past 1.4v. at normal temperatures. But hey, these xenons are cheap now so do as you please :) my favorite chip is the w3680 (cheaper, xenon version of the 980x) which is unlocked and gives you just a bit more of what Intel says is "safe" voltage to play with than the x5600 series. 1.375v vs 1.35v. Also I hit 4.41ghz at 1.344v with the w3680 and 4.5ghz at the same voltage the w3690. The next step up on them required going over the 1.375v to be completely stable and I didn't want to do that. That was with just using the unlocked multi. (Except for the slight bump in baseclock from the xmp profile for 2000mhz ram on the w3690). Maybe could get more with the same voltage with the baseclock overclock method and bumping up all these other values, but I never did try that as I have always had unlocked sku's. (I7-975, w3680, & w3690)
Another tip is to get that multiplier straight to the highest you can, As for voltages I'd used a x5650 running at 4.62ghz @1.55v under a alphacool eisbaer 360mm and it was perfectly safe, I wouldn't recommend over 1.55v for the x56xx's
shaunskii - rubbish, intel's datasheet is nothing more than a "Guide" under common cooling solutions as long as you don't go above 1.6v it'll be fine and you'll require a excellent cooling solution to handle higher voltages.

I managed a 4.375 on air noctua dh-15 with a 5675 wasn't too bad with the video evgas setup was a little different but achieved the same results at least lol

Some tips for anyone getting BSOD's from Overclocking X58:
1. Uncore stability varies widely between chips even at max safe voltage (1.35) if you see IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL BSOD, it probably means your uncore is 2 high. (ive noticed a range of 3200-3800 on my chips)
2. C-States will BSOD you silly or cause latency issues, turn it off!
The strange thing is, that in my situation it seems to be the exact opposite.
Well, the BSOD thing does not happen to often, but as far as i have experienced i have more BSOD's when i turn C-state off.
Ever since I threw a cheap $40 xeon in my machine to upgrade it, I have been fascinated by these chips. They are extremely high quality and dirt cheap for what they are. I'm glad most noobs think you can't game with xeon. Keeps things cheap for us!
Really useful guide, will save us X58ers lots of time, there are so many variable settings and possible combinations ! My UD3R rev 2 is currently running an X5680 at 4 Ghz with 4.3 Ghz turbo 1.26 V core cinebench score 959 but using this guide I should be able to bump it up a bit higher. I've been running my system from new in 2010 ish, it originally had an i7 930, which I swapped for an X5650 then a X5680 wth higher multi. The X5680s are now available on Ali Express for £32.00 shipped. I would have upgraded to an all new PC last year but these Xeons are so cheap and have given my "old" PC such a massive boost it's now got plenty of power for now at least. I wonder how many people have an X58 board and don't realise they can upgrade so easily and cheaply with a used Xeon !

Of course the multi drops if you leave speed step enabled in BIOS (Allso make sure to disable any C-States in BIOS)... Allso CPU PLL never brought me anything on these CPUs... For high BCLK (215++) you need to up PCIe frequency, helps on X5650 and L/E chips
EDIT: For cinebench you want to up NB clock 2000MHz memory is bottlenecked by your NB running at 3200MHz 3800+ is what you're looking for :)
I noticed cinebench scores improving by 6 points for every 200mhz Uncore/NB step bump up from 3200.
You'll hit a limit somewhere between 4200 and 4300MHz Uncore allso there is no real point in running memory above ~950 CL7-7-7 that's the point where it turns into pure CPU scaling :)
EDIT: Not that any of these numbers matter for daily of course :)

The best overclock guide for X58... i really hate most of the guides out there that did not teach you very details how to even get a basic one running. At least this video gurantees a safe point for 1 proper one.

I love x58 so much. I was actually in the process of re-overclocking my w3680 when you uploaded this video. 4.6GHz @ 1.45v is pretty amazing from a $70 chip that's 6 cores and 12 threads. Edit:) got my w3680 to run 4.805MHz @ 1.608V, running my ram around 2136MHz in triple channel, multiplier @ X36 (it can go all the way up to around 56), bus 133MHz, and QPI link in CPU-Z reads 3203.55MHz

1.45 vcore seems about right. My W3680 runs 4.4Ghz daily with 1.4 vcore. These motherboards are getting pretty damn old too, depending on how many hours of hard work they've been put through the caps could be degraded enough to do a poor job smoothing out the voltage.
And the xeons have much higher voltage tolerances right? I remember anything above 1,37 was the danger zone for i7s.
I just bought a P6T Deluxe + X5650 + 6x 2GB of DDR3 1600Mhz and a Noctua U12S for 170€, it is coming in next week, can't wait to start overclocking it! Love the channel. After watching your channel a couple years ago I narrowed my purchase down to the w3680. I had some struggles with overclocking and even fried some ram but it seems VERY stable and I'm VERY happy. I was able to get a nice x28 ratio with a BCLK of 150 giving me a VERY stable 4.2ghz with everything else on auto. I'm only air cooling and it doesnt seem to mind at all.,

I've got the Asus Rampage Gene II, I need Hyperthreading and all 6 cores/12 threads, and am just using a simple 1 fan CPU tower cooler, so I think 4.5ghz is a good goal. Just got 990 Cinebench core at only 4.2ghz, this CPU is still such a beast and hugely versatile.

For years I've never worked out why my cpu would not hit over 3.7ghz, seemed any time I disabled speedstep or power limiter it would just baulk and crash when it hit 4ghz, I followed your voltage settings (I really have no idea about those was just using auto) and I took my ratio down to 20x as 21x wasn't an option and now I'm running stable at 4ghz with a bcklk of 200 and ram sitting at 1600mhz which it's designed to do. Thank you very much! My system is now a lot more stable than before as it was constantly thermal clocking.

UPDATE : well, to be sure I ran a bench before overclocking, and I got 1008. After overclocking ram to 1900mhz, I got 1006, so basically same performances. I think it's about the the timings you suggest, probably they are good only for very cheap ram.
Since I'm not a great ram overclocker, I'll just set it back to how it was 8)

You will have to get a new Case. Happened to me. Got a Dell T3500 for nothing. Bought a EVGA X58 board and 24GB of ram off a guy locally. Found out the I/O shield is built into the damn case. No worries found another killer deal locally for a better case overall.

That’s really helpful, however I already oc my w3670@4.4ghz@1.4v on my gigabyte x58 extreme with water cooling on the northbridge, the best x58 mobo I’ve ever had!
I have a problem however wich is my ram, it’s a green Samsung 3x4gb kit and I can only run it at 1408mhz as it wont boot at 1800mhz... So I did tweak the timings and now it’s at 7-8-7-22 but only at 1408... I’m so mad it can’t go 1800 even at 10-10-10-30 or something !
i have gskill ram 1600 mhz 9 9 9 24 - and i have problems getting it to boot beyond 1400 mhz too. I tried the dram voltage at 1.6, maybe is should try 1.64 ... IDK
ThePs4DansLaChatteATaMere78 My UD3R has this memory like performance setting or something, where you can choose between Standard, Turbo, and Extreme. Make sure it's set to Standard.

Ok so I tried to set it to 10-11-11-31 at 1.64 and it wasn’t booting at 1800mhz, then I tried all auto at 1.64 and it wasn’t booting, so I tried to lower the timings even more and I’m now stable at 7-8-7-11 (is that normal?!?)

ThePs4DansLaChatteATaMere78 It's strange, but RAM's strange in general. So nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe the RAM likes X timing to be in a certain range, or a round number, or an even number, or a like even multiple of the latency, etc. Especially since the sub-timings are derived from the primary's. Or it could be some other component in your system. There are many reasons for it.
It's like why it's thought that Samsung B-Die works the best with Zen systems is because of the even timings.
But there aren't any universal timings that work on all RAM. It's different for each type of die, and kit.
But okay so up at the top click on Report, then display the info in nanoseconds.
Great video. Discovered my 6 core Xeon WS 3680 has an unlocked multiplier, so it was the most stable overclock at 4Ghz I have made.

Using this guide, I overclocked my Xeon W3690 Westmere hexacore (running on a Rampage Gene III motherboard w/ 48 gigs of DDR3 RAM (8gb x 6)) to 4.41 ghz and my RAM to 2285mhz. I was also able to get a rock solid Uncore speed of ~3800 mhz. I'm now rocking a mad solid 1034 in Cinebench R15 and a multicore Geekbench score of 19032 (which is roughly on par with a stock frequency i7-7700k, which barely cracks 20k). Additionally, Geekbench puts my memory bandwidth at roughly that of DDR4-2400 -- and since I've got nice "gamer" RAM, I've got the timings tight as piss, too.
I feel like I lucked out and got an extremely well-binned chip as I didn't even have to push the voltages that much. I could doubtlessly push it higher (as I've had successful boots, on air, at upwards of 4.6ghz), but as I'm on air, I don't want to risk it by pushing things too hard; right now the system is stable af, runs cool and I didn't have to get scary with the voltage at all. Liquid cooled, I bet I could complete a Cinebench run at 5ghz and get somewhere in the ballpark of 1100, but I'd definitely not leave it there for general use!
TYC, you really knows your stuff when it comes to X58. Thanks to you, I've basically got the equivalent of a MUCH newer system (with a few caveats i.e. PCIE 2.0 rather than 3.0) for way less money.

Thanks for this tutorial, copied your settings almost exactly with just a bit of tweaking. Just got my X5650 today from China - cost 12$ US. Put in my Asus Rampage Formula 3 and already have a stable 4.2Ghz at 1.35V for the CPU. Temps are in the 60 degrees - using Corsair H100 AIO cooler.
Your video is perfect! Just got the x5675 to 4.2 GHz but, unfortunately, the memory oc didn't work at 2000mhz. It's running smooth! Thank you so much, it helped me a lot. My previous CPU was an i7-920. I am grateful that I discovered these xeon processors, better late than never.

I just recently finished rebuilding my original Gigabyte GA-X58a-UD3R v.1 gaming rig as a file/infrastructure/game server for the house, and overclocked it to the gills after watching several of your videos and reading commentary.
I managed to pick up a Xeon W3690 for $80 to replace my original i7-920, and cranked it up to 4.46GHz (193x23) with a x19 uncore multiplier, with my 24GB RAM running at 1552MHz. I was hoping for 4.5GHz, but it couldn't quite make it. It's rock solid, but the north bridge gets very toasty because the airflow in my case isn't ideal. It soundly stomps my Ryzen 5 2400g (overclocked to 3.95GHz all core, 3400MHz DDR4) with Cinebench R15 scores just over 1000 vs 865. Overall, I am very happy with the results and want to build another one if I can find a reasonably priced, high performance X58 motherboard. It's running great, but I am finding that these particular boards are pretty pricey here in the US, so I am curious what your favorite X58 motherboards are.

Just upgraded my i7 920 to a x5675 overclocked it put in a 1660 super and am getting 60 fps in Flightsim 2020 in my Montana hometown at Mostly high
settings. Ultra on clouds and a few other things. These are great old computers. I'm sure I'll have to lower some settings to fly around NYC but this is
just great for a 12 year old system. 1080p

Way cool video. I haven't poked around in a Tylersburg OC for yrs , since my ROG Rampage II Gene as I moved quickly to Dual Xeon and they didn't allow for much if any OC (evga CR2 does). I'd like to add; for ease of testing, unplug everything except the basics. I'd even use 1 single HDD w/ a basic, clean Windows install. Have a restore so you can to get right back into it if all goes wrong. And believe me, if new to this, things may go wrong so have patients & prepare to learn as you go. Take lots of notes on paper or snaps pix to review later. Document your steps. Overclocking the world, 1 PC at a time
i know this is a year old but for anyone else watching.. the x5660 is a locked multiplier cpu. the base clock is 21, the boost clock goes like this, 24 23 22 22. depending on the core usage. thats why it bounces around.. if you are lucky to have a x58 bios that lets you select the multiplier after disabling the turbo, you can lock it to 23. unfortunately i think most are locked at 21 or auto if you disable the turbo. the same goes for the x5670 and x5690, but those the turbo goes up to 26 25 24 24 and 27 26 25 25.. and the x58 boards only go to 21 so this is why they arent so popular for oc. you will get a higher boost, but the base clock will be the same as the x5660.. especially if you disable the turbo.
I'l keep your video as a reference for when i'l do my overclocking. I will be swapping my Xeon quad core X3520 for a X5675, that will be to upgrade and renovate my old Workstation Z400 and give it a bit more life, thanks for your work!
X58 does rule, so glad I bought a Xeon 6 core -- 5680, got it for a low $15.00 US, however the board is an old Super Micro X58 - but could not pass up the $43 dollar price tag -- ebay. Runs great but eventually I will find a more recent X58 - right now w/out overclocking this computer runs solid and so stable, saved over $200.00 in CPU and motherboard costs
I got a free ASUS P6T6 WS from my uni's electronics dump. Decided to get a W3680 for it. Got it running at 4.5 GHz, 1.33 V now (150 BCLK x30) with 18GB of Registered RAM at 1500MHz without much effect! Once I get the better thermal paste I ordered (what I got is that 1 dollar stuff from eBay), I'll try to get it even higher ^.^
the "uclk must be twice the memory speed" thing was for the nehalem/bloomfield chips which wouldn't work well with less than 2x uclk, the westmere/gulftown chips work fine at 1.5x
4.4Ghz here. 22x200. I'm using my X5675 on my original Asus Sabertooth X58 mobo from 2010 and it still running great, with a GTX 780 and nice samsung SSD. Tried to get uncore stable to 4ghz but it only barely wants to do 3800mhz or less. Cinebench score = 1020.
The one weird thing I had to do was increase IOH to 1.20v, and my CPU is at 1.4v, QPI 1.3v so pretty high volts overall. Maybe i can lower it later.
Also i wanted to say THANKS, your knowledge is great and you covered everything important, and the BIOS of this P6T deluxe and my X58 sabertooth are exactly the same, so it helped.

Great tutorial, I was having problems with my x58a-ud3r and a xeon 5650 processor overclocking it. I would get BSOD every now and then until i bumped up the voltage a bit more as you indicated in this video.
I'm very happy you didn't tell people to down clock there QTI freq to something nuts like 3.2GT/s I've seen some many tuts for x58 saying to lower that an sure you can clock higher with it super low if you you want to kill your PCIe/GPU transfer rate. Those xeons are 6.4GT/s stock i believe just like there golf town cousins,I always set that at 6.4 stock and let it rise with the overclock,usually ends up around 7.6GT/s with 4.5 on the cpu core. Some motherboards let you drop that setting to crazy low values killing your transfer rate of your PCIe lanes,So your CPU is cranked to 5.1GHz but can barely feed the GPU at 3.2GT/s transfer rate.
Didnt need another project, but found an asus p6x58d premium with a 960 at goodwill for $7. Awesome. Ordered a 5675 for $15. Already had ram, case, psu, hdd, but gonna order ssd, and a water cooler. Should be a decent cheap system
I actually tend to prefer the W36xx series of x58 Xeons to the X56xx series for single CPU builds. They cost more, but having an unlocked multiplier gives way more flexibility and eases the overclock process significantly and can result in more stable builds. With some boards, BCLK can get a bit iffy if you push it hella hard and requires a lot more tweaking.
With a W series, a mild-moderate BLCK boost (or sometimes none at all) paired with a raised multiplier makes it much easier to get those sweet 1000+ CB scores. In fact, with my most recent build, it was as easy as setting the CPU multiplier to 33 and leaving the BCLK stock at 133. I didn't even touch any other settings, and this alone was sufficient to get a 1009 CB score. I could likely push it higher by giving the BCLK a mild push (or leaving it and pumping more voltage into the CPU to get it to 34) but even as is, I've broken the 1000 CB barrier with a rock stable system and am super happy with it.
It is actually possible to install the P6T workstation bios on the regular P6T deluxe, and it completely unlocks the multiplier beyond 21! I have this working on my x58 rig :)

Nice! I am able to get 4.23ghz on my EVGA FTW / x5650. I’d love to hit 1000 on Cinebench but It comes in at its best of 958. Good enough and I’m achieving that on 1.275v which is fine for me for everyday use.
6 weeks ago I pickup up a Combo: ASUS P6T Deluxe v2, i7-920, OCZ Gold 6gb Triple 1600MHz for $100.00 on Craigslist. I haven't built it yet, I'll be swapping out my ASUS A8N-SLI Premium, AMD 4800+, LSI 9211-4i, Samsung 840 Pro 512, Antec p180 case. Just ordered a Xeon x5675 and CM 212 Evo from Amazon today. My plans are to find a used Asus 1070 Strix OC down the road. I'm so glad the x58 are still relevant today, it may be 10 years old, but it's new for me!

I have one of those boards and setting it to 1.3 volts makes the VRMs overheat. I'd recommend checking that and pointing it out since so many people don't think about it because the system is stable and the temperature doesn't show but I could guarantee you could burn your hand by touching the VRM heat sink. That part where the CPU ratio going down to 21 could have even been the VRM thermal throttling since there's no other indication but I'm not there so I'm not going to just say what it was for sure.
I have jury rigged an old socket 775 CPU cooler fan over my MOBOs VRM heatsink and heatpipes, makes a huge difference. Like you mentioned the temperature was too hot to touch but now is in the region of 50 - 60 degrees C.
The turbo not locking in is a known problem on the Asus P6T Deluxe V2. I run my X5675 on that board but with a crossflashed and slightly modded P6T WS Pro BIOS. There you get the High TDP override option if you leave the multiplier on Auto.

Made it to 4.5 on my x5660 under water with pretty high voltage Settled on 4.2 at 1.325v / 1600 ram. I have the same board btw and did notice It unfortunately wont run the boost multiplier of 23 on the x5660. I Bought an x5675 last month. Need to shuffle some builds around before getting to overclocking it. Excited, Id like to hit a 4.5 or higher 24/7 stable oc under water. This is a good guide to get people started though.
Just followed this guide and hit 4.48GHz @ 1.36v with my i7 980x + GA X58A UD5 and hit exactly 1000cb :D awesome considering I got the CPU, Mobo and 24Gb Corsair Dominator DDR3 for less than a used 7th gen i5 !!!!!

I recently got my x5670 and did a safe OC of 4ghz. It's been really hot here, and ambient temps in the house have been 23c. 10 min tress tests got CPU temps up to 78 degrees. I had been running my vcore at 1.3 like everyone suggested.
But I've been lowering it bit by bit today and currently have it stable at 1.24v. The CPU generally hangs around 72C which is a significant drop.
My hideous NB temps have dropped a couple of degrees too. I guess you like to push your CPU to the extreme, but I thought I'd just mention that a slightly milder OC can allow you to lower the vcore below what seems to be the general OC recommendation and remain stable with lower temps.
This helped me a lot. Thank you for spending time for this :) Also if things don't workout for any of you it might be that your BIOS isn't up to date. Mine wasn't even on the GIGABYTE website LOL

On x58 uncore (UCLK) has to be no lower than 2xDRAM for 45nm CPUs and 1.5xDRAM for 32nm CPUs. This means that with 1600MHz DRAM the uncore can be running at 2400MHz for 32nm instead of 3200MHz for 45nm, easier to get a stable high overclock when just the core is being pushed hard.

Hey FYI to also keep your x58 running into the future you can use a NVMe HDD with a adapter card and using Tiano core as a uefi wrapper.. This allows X58's to support NVMe SSD's and still curb stomp most new machines in the ground.. I still out perform New machines and see no reason to sidegrade to something else when this thing still shreds. You just have to find ways around getting the newer faster technology to work on the X58. You should make a video on setting up a NVMe SSD on a X58. I'm on my 3rd X58 board thank god for ebay. Oh and intel xeons =)
have you ever had issues with psu's not being compatible with x58 mobo? i've had issues where certain psu would not power up the mobo at all, something to do with the x58 knowing if a power supply is not providing 5v...
