I've heard him say a great many times that they sometimes flip items on ebay to recover some of the costs. His last job was figuring out how to sell stuff. I think he will figure out how to make a profit on this video just fine.
I can empathize with Linus here personally. How many times have I gone out of my way and helped people like my family or very close friends with a computer or some sort of high effort on my part to make their lives easier and then they just either got rid of it or end up ignoring me and my advice that I put a lot of effort into, because something else came alongside and took the place of that. That is by far the most frustrating thing I deal with. Definitely makes you feel less valued. Now I know this video is meant to the informative and a little funny, but I have a feeling Linus is a little hurt from it. No one can blame him.
Out of the tech channels mentioned in this video linus and his team emphasis on his team are techy nerds which is a good thing, the rest are just internet personalities who found their niche talking about apple and the latest smartphone. Ive been using unraid for years with no issues. You might actually learn a thing or two by troubleshooting your server. MKBHD and IJUSTINE wanted apple care for their server so they shelled out 30k LOL..
Tech TH-camrs like Mkbhd are like what we are to our grandparents. They "know" about tech. But people like Linus are like what actual technicians to us. They KNOW know about tech.
Until you bring up actual enterprise tech, then they call Wendell over because their IT aura isn't strong enough to penetrate the veil of enterprise tech. Been there, learned enough for my IT aura to become mostly usable on enterprise tech. I'm still nowhere near as good as one of my friends. I have legitimately had multiple instances of just requiring him to walk over and be near the problematic hardware for it to decide to fix itself and carry on like I hadn't spent 8 hours troubleshooting it already.
Not at all. First it runs on open source software, meaning if you want to change something about it, you still can. While it's designed to be easy to just plug into a computer, there's also nothing stopping you connecting it to a switch either. Unlike an iphone it's also not aimed at consumers, it's aimed at small businesses who don't want to take on the job and time playing tech support when that's not what their company does. This is designed so that a small company can just plug it in and let any problems be solved by their support plan. Why would a small video editing company take the time to learn about FreeNAS, setup a server and deal with any tech support themselves? They want to edit video, not be a sysadmin. Also it's not even overly priced, I just quickly speced how much a Dell MD3060e NAS would cost with the same amount of storage, and the answer is closer to $80,000. There's really zero reason to hate on this Jellyfish company.
Life of a Linus Tech Tips employee: 5% actual work 20% playing games in the break room 75% stress testing networks and watching Linus get a half chub over numbers
For the $1000 difference saved, it almost makes more sense to go with jellyfish if they have some sort of warranty behind their product. Any small business that would actually be purchasing this product wouldn't mind forking over the additional cash for access to a support phone number with any of their issues, hardware or software wise.
@@InB4Ethan The $1000 difference is with huge expensive upgrades. A big chunk of the price came from the storage, and ssd's are usually4-5 times more expensive than hard drives.

To be fair, i dont consider iJustine and MKBHD in the same realm as linus media group. They both are freelance product reviewers!! That 's not tech in my dictionary. On the other hand Linus media group have an engineering foundation in everything they do or say or use , per se. So no, m not mad at them. I dont expect them to build their own machine :) They ain't cool enough.
That's the issue though. They had Linus help them before, than ditched him for another off-the-shelf solution when they could have went back to him. That's pretty "stab-you-in-the-back"-y when it comes to professional relationships in this sort of context. At the same time, it does show how talented Linus is that he's able to take a situation like this and turn it into a fantastic video.
Also pretty unprofessional to just keep going to linus for their problems. Plus they needed optimization with osx for specifically fcpx. Something that linus doesn't know anything about. You still think they should just go to linus even if it's not in his territory.
I have to say, I wore that LTT hoodie the weekend after in Whistler mountain biking and on ATVs. Then the following weekend hiking and dirt biking in Bend, Oregon. It was part of a swag exchange, but the LTT hoodie is great.
ProTip: Using enterprise SSD for long-term storage is a bad idea if they aren't powered on most of the time. Using any SSD for long term offline storage is a bad idea, but especially enterprise. They can start to lose bits after a few months for enterprise. A couple of years for consumer. Just throwing that out there in case anybody wasn't aware. Use SSD all day as working drives, but ALWAYS use mechanical drives for archival of your important stuff.
I was wondering just that. Based on the little I know about SSDs, I expected them to die pretty quickly in a server with all the constat reading and writing.
@@captainufo4587 I would trust an enterprise SSD in a server as much as a mechanical drive. Maybe more. As long as it is powered on most of the time. They only leak current and lose bits when they're powered off for a long time. It's only a bad idea as archival, offline storage.
i mean, it was more like "hey, let's spend $34k just to have some fun and see if we can make something comparable to a $35k professional system" (also, to give Jellyfish credit where due: the LTT system isn't going to have anyone to call if something goes wrong with it.)

I work in the IT field specially in media and seeing some of the decisions he has made in terms of network architecture/server infrastructure I would not ask his advice. Also work with a Jellyfish server and they are great for a business you can't go wrong with actual support contracts, plus having about 50+ editors you need a bit more of a enterprise solution than some homebrewed set up.

That and their videos featuring it might lead to someone buying into that jellyfish crap and holding it against the tubers that had their trust.
"The hurt" comes in my case after they ask me to help them troubleshoot that garbage they got after my solution i spent hours on building.

So Jellyfish is basically NAS for the type of people that likes iPhones.
*links iJustine's channel*

@@InB4Ethan The $1000 difference is with huge expensive upgrades. A big chunk of the price came from the storage, and ssd's are usually4-5 times more expensive than hard drives.

Mkbhd is far from freelance, he has people working *for him*. That's not freelance.

It seems intentional... I hope
Linus just casually using a "ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo" like it is a daily driver that needs no call out 😎😎😎😎😎
Credit to the ZenBook Pro Duo imo, its main event doesn't need promoting
I know that 2nd screen is mostly frivolous but damn does it look cool when he's running task manager on it
Hard but subtle flex for sure
Thank you for droppin MKBHD video comment on why he chose his server. I love the fairness and education of this video.
Linus - "well I'm disappointed"
Unknown - "well me too bro"
Linus - "who are you?"
Unknown --wtf bro, I'm Seagate".
Edit - (segate iron wolf 'hard disks').
I'll come back when the video quality catches up to 2019
EDIT: Wow, people apparently took this WAY differently than I meant it. I literally meant I will come back. I want to watch the video. But 360p is a little rough, especially to watch it in 360p when they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on camera and editing equipment. This was more at TH-cam pushing the video public before its completely ready to stream, than the quality of LTT's video.
fuck off
You're an idiot
That’s a youtube thing not them. Im sure you’re a trolly though.
@@doomy_doomy2225 I know its TH-cam, I was simply stating I was waiting for the upload to finish distributing to watch something better than 360p. I have seen their camera and editing setup, I know it's not on them.
Don’t worry, the guys above me are mostly idiots.
Wow, three multipart projects concluded in three days.
I'm not used to this kind of closure and resolution. It feels... weird.
That's what the past 5 years of LTT were for :')
I remember watching the moving vlogs (when they moved into the current studio), and I knew it would all lead up to this one day. Quite impressive.
9:32 I see that crab rave playing in that monitor
$11
Lmfao
I swear they've been using the crab rave video so much it's starting to become an expected video in any LTT video
Hearing him talk it sounded like MKBHD is trying to convince himself that he hadn't made the wrong choice...
