    Thanks, you nailed two important features that nobody else on their reviews highlighted, that is paying a lot for their bad quality filaments, and using their limited slicer tool.
    This video saved me lots of time and potentially money!

    Hi there, I have a Jr. And I haven't had any of the problems you've described, I've been nothing but 100% happy with it. I've used the clear, translucent green and black filament. No real issues at all. I have the pearl white filament but haven't tried it yet. I mostly print small detail accessories for my O scale layout, but I've also printed many other things with very good results. This is my first 3D printer, so I'm not as experienced with printing as other people. So I may not know any better! I like your videos, but respectfully don't agree with your review. For my needs, Jr is perfect! I'll probably post a video soon of things I printed. Thank you again!

    Pretty happy with mine actually. Cost of filament is high, but then again even many pricey printers do not manage filament remaining which this does for every reel very nicely. Internal reel mount is a god send - much better than dodgy external caddies. I just wish you got the NFC chip holder part pre-mounted with each spool - not unreasonable at this price ! Main issue is filament unmount which works only sometimes - if it jams you have to unscrew feed from hot end, "load", wait for temp to drop to 100c, pull. Works fine but kinda a pain - if you snap off in the cold brake inside the head god help you - microtwist drill bits, no cartridge disassembly instructions and much care needed. Fortunately have only had to do that twice and all printers have this issue from time to time. The factory levelling is good, but the default first layer height was not on mine and this is where my first jam came from - best to go a little high and step it down until perfect using their sample part (a small heart pendent). Over all it was a good purchase, and the case with its very nice internal light and the internal frame are very very nice, very portable and better than most printers 3 times the cost.
    On a final note - yes the slicer is a "bit pants", but have you ever tried to use so called "simplify 3D" for the first time? Gods ... overwhelming ... and the silly XYZ slicer actually works well with this printer "on default" and then you can slowly play from there. I also use Microsoft 3d builder most of the time - it really is the underrated (and free) "iMovie" of 3d :)

    I think things has changed since this video.
    You can now use gcode (converted to da Vinci format, see video on youtube).
    You'll also find how to reset the filament counter on TH-cam, allowing you to have a printer for 350$ while using any filament you'd like.

    Good video, I considered one of these before building my Sunhokey i3 which with my upgrades edges this out on prints.
    As mentioned already they can be reflashed which sorts not being able to use normal slicers and takes off the restriction of using their filament.

    There is actually a work around with the filament. There is a way to reset the chip and make the printer think you are using any color with any length left. I use a big roll of hatchbox pla on my jr, and when it says it is low, I reset the chip.

    I wish i would of seen this video over 6 months ago before i purchased my XYZ Da Vinci Jr 1.0 printer because I had no idea about only being able to use thier Filament. Only until about 4 days ago when i wnet to go buy a differnet filament and could not find any then investigated only to find out it has a chip in thier spool. I have seen on E-Bay that a seller is selling some 3D printed chips that read a fool spool so you can use any brand spool have you seen them and would you recommend them?

    I got the DaVinci Pro on preorder for $550 an I have to say I was unimpressed at first, but now I love it. Since it is completely unlocked I can use the filiment I want saving money and Slic3r with better setting control and multi-threaded slicing. The XYZWare is only single threaded so my CPU was pegged at 12.5% (i7), now it goes to %100 and takes ones of seconds. I have found my DaVinci printer has excellent print quality, I cannot complain at all. The major downside is you have to print very slowly. I have the thing set to 40mm/s maximum for infilling. exterior perimeters at 30 and interior at 35. It takes forever but I am overall pleased. It features the off-board bowden style extruder which is great for vibration and accuracy b/c the print head is light, however oozing does require some post-processing with a scraper.

    My wife got one of these through goodwill of all places. Wasn't working at first, had to replace the power adapter that came with it with a proper one. And had to fix the connecting rod for the z-axis. But I got it to print fine after some calibration. For the price she paid and for a couple spools from amazon, I'm very happy so far with my first 3D printer.
    My question is, once I've hit the limits on what I can get out of this one, what are your current recommendations for printers in say the $500- 1K range? I'm not opposed to building it myself, and something that gives me more flexibility in printing materials and even multiple extruders would be ideal.

    Got one for Christmas. Mine is the teal one w/wireless. Have had problems with computer talking to printer, and taking the print off the bed. Don't like the tape sheets, because they tear removing the print.

    • @HoffmanEngineering
      @HoffmanEngineering  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not a big fan of the tape print surfaces either, they are quite easy to tear. Luckily its easy to replace with normal blue painters tape, and its relatively inexpensive.
      Sorry to hear about the wifi problems though, I have the Da Vinci 1.0 pro, which has wireless connection as well, and I haven't had issues connecting besides IP addresses changing each time the printer turns on.
      How's the print quality for you? Any issues with bad filament that I experienced with my jr?

    • @foueyes
      @foueyes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Either I'm learning quickly (or have an excellent tutor) or my luck is changing! LOL. Still haven't figured out how to use the wireless feature, but yesterday I got the printer to see the computer and print a small sign without the chip. Had good luck with using a glue stick on top of the tape sheet. Had just a minor tear which I taped over for my next attempt. Neither my friend nor I have had trouble with the filament. He's used a bunch of different colors, I'm still on my first reel of white.

    I also dont like they way you have to calibrate the XYZ Da Vinci Jr 1.0 took me forever to finaly get it to print the way i wanted after manyattempts at calibrating it. I also took their tape off and just used a small amount of stick of glue it works alot better but i also used a differnet filament using thiers might also have been the reason why my prints didnt come out as good.

    I’ve had this printer since Christmas. About 90 hours of printing with very mixed results. I’m so tired if the nozzle jams that take forever to clear. I even do it before every run. It’s so slow to run through its paces before heating up the Extruder to even clean it. I can’t for the life of me get the bed leveled having watch just about every TH-cam video on the topic. Bought Simplify3D as they now support the device. Not having much luck that either. So ready for an upgrade now.

  • @David-xk1ok

    I have this printer and it jams so much that its to the point where I haven't touched it in months. Also, I have the black and clear filament and the black jams. not the clear as much. The printer also likes to jam while trying to load in filament. Its a struggle. I got it for $250 though at barnes and nobles

    • @HoffmanEngineering
      @HoffmanEngineering  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Next time it jams, run your fingers over the last couple feet of filament and see if you can feel the diameter changing. When I've experienced jamming, I could feel a bump in the filament which prevented it from being able to fit through the extruder. If so, definitely contact XYZPrinting and see if you can get a replacement cartridge.

    400 micron layers?

    • @HoffmanEngineering
      @HoffmanEngineering  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +modeem352 Correct, their slicer had presets for 0.1mm, 0.2mm, 0.3mm, and 0.4mm layer heights. That goes against the usual rule-of-thumb of max layer height of 80% your nozzle diameter, but it actually printed with 0.4mm with no problems.

    Nice review. There's something to be said for simplicity, but the quality that these produce isn't great. It's a bit of a shame that Barnes & Noble is displaying and selling these in their stores since I feel like it might turn people off to 3D printing.

      you can always strip it naked of their circuitry and put a ramps in there. Stepper motors all work the same way, unless they are using unipolar ones would would be a pita and would require you to open them and separate the winding to make them bipolar.
      The same can be done to any 2D printer out there. With and arduino/microcontroler and a bit o patience you can turn any 2D printer into a plotter or whatever you like. Even if it uses an optical encoder for the carriage.

      We have one designed for beginners which cost about $500. Very easy to operate, comes with everything you need and has already been calibrated at the factory. We even include PLA filament 1kg and a MicroSD card with preloaded model files, so you can start printing right out of the box. The compatible software is Cura so you can customize the model. Feel free to contact me for more details pls. Thank you so much. Email: zoe@et3dp.com

    hi. well as we can see on the video : even with the yellow spool the print quality is average but not good at all. overhangs are not clean.

      +Axel Sixtysix Certainly passable, but you are correct, the overhangs are slightly droopy, corners are not crisp. It could definitely use a fan to cool the object, especially since it is PLA only.

      Its true, this model is so cheap because they expect to turn a profit over on the filament. They have other models, like the Da Vinci 1.0 Pro which can use other filament, but is more expensive than the Jr to compensate.

    The file format you mention in the video is just a renamed gcode file.
    here is an article on that.. hackaday.com/2014/04/17/using-non-crappy-software-with-the-da-vinci-printer/
    There is another software package that works natively with the full line of davinci's
    Simplify 3d...
    for the JR... you can reset the filament counter to use 3rd party filament like you can with the big Davinci's:
    www.instructables.com/id/XYZ-Da-Vinci-Junior-jr-NFC-Tag-Filament-Reset-Hack/
    but you have to use a back level firmware according to the forums....
    Another good sub $500 printer that has all the features without the proprietary filament issues is the Wanhao I3..... though to print ABS you really should have an enclosure for it...
    Great post though....

    I could never complete a 3D-printout with this machine. The filament stucks in the dispenser, the feeder cuts the filament, the printer stops dispensing and turns empty figures in the air. It's worth nothing!

    • @StuEvans
      @StuEvans 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      did you setup the z axis. Once you get this sorted its pretty good.

    • @dschony
      @dschony 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for asking.
      I did a lot of work on this printer in the meantime. Unfortunately I do not have any pictures for documentation.
      I lowered the pressure on the feeder mechanism by reducing the tension of the spring. It had a force of about 3 kg. This high tension causes the stepper motor to block, if only a small amount of higher force is required, to feed the filament - hearable as a "clack, clack, clack" with an optical vibration of the filament at the same beat.
      I lowered the tension to about 300g, by the use of a screw driver to increase the spacing of the springs windings. The feeder is located on the upper left side of the printer. The half of the case has to be unmounted, to be able, to reach it.
      The force is estimated by the pressure force on the thumb, to move the feeders leverage.
      I also lowered the pressure of the springs in the filament detectors, to allow a smoother guiding trough. There are two detectors, one in the filament feeder, one in the extruder head. To do this, I took the springs out, pulled it to the double of the original length, cutted it in the half and sat it back in.
      It is a bit tricky, to open the extruder head. I broke some fasteners out.
      I had to fix the entry for the filament on the extruder head with a nylon washer, mounted under the fixation, to thighten it. It was loose and caused a misleading of the filament on entering the extruder.
      The metallic cone inside the extruder head had some sharp edges, where the filament was jammed mostly. After smoothening it a bit, the filament was sliding trough without any problems.
      Now it prints perfectly.

      @@dschony excellent. This review is pretty dated and missing some facts. You do suprise me with all the things you had to do. I know the clack clack noise but I found that this on most of the Jr's I've seen was always because the feed tries to feed too close to the bed or the last layer. I'm not doubting you either just you can't believe most of this review as it's misleading.

    • @dschony
      @dschony 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The clack clack comes from the feeders stepper motor, which is stepping back one step with each clack. The reason for stepping back is always a filament jam. There are two possible reasons for a jam: 1. Something prevents the filament going trough the nozzle (maybe something in front of the filament, like the bed ...). 2. A problem in the feeder loop (like to high forces of the springs and other mechanical problems).

      I find the quality is very good. What they fail to explain well is the setup process. Actually as someone who started out here and now uses these commercially reguarly its really not that bad.
