I love when you tear down repairable stuff, even though it's rare. I haven't been thinking about getting a tablet, but this one is making me reconsider
I've got the 11 Pro right in front of me. Microsoft literally fixed all the issue the Surface lineup had till today. The Snapdragon is extremely fast while being super efficient. No more ludicrous standby drain, a battery life better than basically any laptop out there and finally an Windows on ARM OS which is running everything fine, including emulated x86 apps. Not only that, but major companies like Adobe or Blackmagic natively now also offer their productivity-suite for ARM on Windows. Completely crazy, this wasn't even thought to be possible some years ago.
Yeah, I love it. But I'm somewhat disappointed that Microsoft left us with a cloud only version of the Xbox app. Even steam will let you install a bunch of X86 games. If Microsoft is serious about ARM, they should have Xbox compile some of their lighter first party games to run on ARM as well.
@@rowaystarco Yeah that's true. Although this likely will change over time. Currently they can't emulate AVX2 due to license stuff. And the licensing for AVX2 runs out this year or early next year afaik. The Games published on Microsoft Store highly likely need AVX2, so theres no way to run them anyways.
@@safetinspector2 There are some very rare circumstances which definitely won't work with the emulation layer right now. One is custom network adapters. For example VPN services typically offer their own client, they won't work as x86 apps as the emulation layer can't translate an x86 network adapter. However you can just use the native wireguard client instead. The second thing is AVX2 emulation. That simply isn't possible right now. Any app which requires that won't run. This is a pretty niche thing as I'm not aware of any program which require AVX2 instructions except modern video games. All the others just fall back to AVX. Everything else is literally working out of the box, you don't notice the emulation at all. In the end emulating x86 with the current Windows build is as fast on the X Elite as running the apps natively on the last Intel Ultra 7 chip. Although it uses a bit more power emulated. However more impressive is the current availability of native ARM apps. It's ludicrous, basically all major productivity tools you use are available on ARM. Have a look at "armrepo" on Github pages to see a list.

I personally find it tedious to have to tug on a dongle cable - that's already fragile from previous tugs - than to use a cable that is designed to never be able to tug - WITH all the doodats of display, USB, whatever else.
magnetic USB breakaway cables are cool and all, but you can and will undermine the integrity of the cable's EMI spec - much more so with USB 3 standards and above.

6:55 Now that's an amazing idea - placing QR codes for the tutorials within the actual device.
Kudos to Microsoft for making such an amazing device.
it's an NVMe, but in the short form factor, as the trend seems to be going. It's a lot of storage power in a tiny package.
As DJ said it is a small form factor NVMe drive. Look up NVMe 2230. The great thing is that it is completely standard and they have become way cheaper and more common in recent years!
@@DJBillyQthe downside to it’s smaller size is cost, as these ssd’s are way more expensive.

Looking to possibly replace my iPad, this demo has almost convinced me to get a Surface. I tend to carry my laptop with me when I travel, and it's pretty heavy. I'd actually love to have that "computer in the form of a tablet." The non-bendability of it sweetens that deal. I'm also considering replacing my laptop this winter, but I do a lot of photo processing, so I'm still on the fence as to whether I can get away with having the Surface become my new laptop. Great vid, thanks for the effort you put into these!
Me too
If this was a full sized notebook, I'd want upgradable RAM too. But for what it is, kudos Microsoft. Changing a battery without the risk of bleeding out due to glass shards is great.
I guess this is the original comment. RIP, your comment got copied by a bot and has more likes now. Sigh.

I guess you missed the part at the end where he gouged the bezel and the slightest amount more stress could have easily shattered the screen on this "easily repaired" tablet.
LPCAMM2 RAM is now available for the masses so it would be possible, but yeah it's still up to the vendor/OEM decision
Maybe some model could have it while others still has fully soldered RAM
@@tim3172 "repairable" and "easily repairable" are not the same thing you dunce. Even if it's harder due to the technology being used, being repairable at all is what right to repair is fighting for

I love that Microsoft is getting some love on Zach's channel. Hope the Surface tablets keep getting better as time goes on.
This thing wasn't even on my radar but seeing the durability and repairability, I'm now considering this over a new iPad or Tab S9.
1:57 "knock-off wanna-be Magsafe charging port" to be honest they had this connector for over 10 years now and with the surface Dock, the functionality is much better and compatible with every surface product since the surface pro 3. It's wanna-be Apple Magsafe because Apple changed it multiple times to make chargers incompatible, removed it, brought it back and it still its much more difficult for me to plug in the charging port of the new macbook pro.
Oops, you forgot to mention that Magsafe predates it by 6 years.
The rest of your comment is just nonsense and you randomly admitting to not being able to plug in a simple cable.
That sounds like a tough life.
How clumsy do you have to be to not be able to plug it in? It literally plugs itself in when held near the port.

Louis Rossmann will be very happy that Microsoft has provided the downloaded service guide from the QR codes.
Over the years they have gone from a 0 or 1 on repairability score at iFixit to an 8/10 for this generation.

Your machine held up pretty well! I love the new Surface Pro.
i'm genuinely impressed by the repairability of the surface. That's one direction i'm happy microsoft is going towards, and believe all big tech companies should shift towards as well
I love when you tear down repairable stuff, even though it's rare.
I haven't been thinking about getting a tablet, but this one is making me reconsider
that thermal paste replacement was cursed, heart-wrenching moment. oh my heart my soul ......
I'm so glad you did the teardown together with the durability test. I hope future videos will be like this
I've got the 11 Pro right in front of me.
I've been curious about the x86 emulation. What is the real-world feel of those emulated apps? Anything that isn't working as you'd expect?

I kinda expect phones with this processor and windows inside with monitor usb-c output. Everything in one pocket size with large capacity.
You must be blessed for this comment. A phone with this processor with a 4g or 5g sim slot running windows arm at 6.8 inch screen.
@@univera1111 I have the dev kit for this cpu platform, there's no way it'd survive as a phone sized device. It's way too power hungry in its current iteration. The snapdragon x elite has a package power of up to 80 watts. At full tilt, it would drain the largest cellphone battery commonly on the market in less than 15 minutes. Not that it's thermals could survive that in that package size.
They could absolutely do it with current phone processors. Mobile OS really sucks. They just don't want to do it.
