Blending Colors with the DaVinci Jr. 2.0 Mix // 3D Printer Review

  • The DaVinci Jr. 2.0 Mix 3D printer can deliver some impressive results for the price. Dual color and mixed color printing for under $500 sounds pretty great, but there are some things seriously holding this machine back. Watch and learn!

    Even if this printer had incredible print quality, I wouldn't buy this on the principle that they've locked it to only use their spools. We, as a growing community, shouldn't be supporting these kinds of practices

      Not for stl files, for slicing, like you cant use cura simplify3d etc.

      Box-Of-Hats I have a custom made reseter chip that will trick the printer into thinking it is full so I can use 3rd party filament. Now I have flashed mine to use repeater host firmware so I can slice with slic3r or any software I choose, but this took a lot of work and it's a shitty printer. STAY AWAY BUY ANOTHER PRINTER!!

      Box-Of-Hats exactly, it doesn't use g-code. It uses its one code. You can't even use your preferred slicer.

    @ABaumstumpf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    So it needs to extrude a lot of material when swapping colours, has a shitty slicer and proprietary non-reusable spools.
    Not really worth it.

      ABaumstumpf while changing colors, a purge tower is normal. So no wasted plastic here. But im with you on everything wmelse you said. I would buy it, if they wouldnt lock you onto their filament a d slicer.

    • @JasperJanssen
      @JasperJanssen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bilal Akyüz there doesn’t seem to be a halfway decent open source slicer that does mixing, unfortunately. Slic-three-R has the other kinds locked down (multi-extruder and load/unload) but nobody is making a successful mixing printer that isn’t proprietary.

    That thing tech companies are doing of binding you to their software and materials is going to catch on to them... it's unethical to force people into your products and keeping them spending with that technique of the appropriate materials designed specifically for use with their products.

      I think the aim is to make a printer that just works. If you want to buy a spool, provide no filament calibration and print well, then the company has to lock you into plastic of known quality. It's not for the hobbyist or tinkerer. imho anyway

  • @x9x9x9x9x9
    @x9x9x9x9x9 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reasons behind the proprietary filament are 1 (the main one) so they can make money in the long haul of the printer. They are kinda taking the ink printer approach where the printer is cheap but the ink is expensive. The other smaller reason is so they can control the quality of the filament. Yes its stupid and I would gladly pay a little ($100 or so) extra to get a printer that doesn't require specific special spools but just give it time and someone will find a way around this. That is if this printer becomes popular which I kinda think it wont.

  • @spikekent

    Great video, but the printer/software is exactly what I expected.
    My first printer was the DaVinci 1.0a which had all the same problems you outlined. I quickly flashed the firmware to Repetier and things improved dramatically. Another huge negative is the customer support, it's horrendous. Worse than having none at all. They make you jump through hoops before they will even consider sending you the replacement part that snapped. That was my experience.
    I've since given it to a friend ... yes, he's still my friend lol

    Chipped spools? Seriously? Do they not realize that they're dealing with makers? Is there any group more likely to resent vendor lock-in and be able disable that particular draconian protection?
    If the gradients were worth this printer's cost and the headache of having to deal with the NFC tags - it's not - I would absolutely hack that NFC chip.

  • @RespectTheHood
    @RespectTheHood 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    you could try to rewrite the NFC chip on the spool

  • @IraQNid
    @IraQNid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Get a chip reader, copy each chip at its full state. Then when it gets programmed by the machine at the end of spool stage you can reprogram it to its original state with your own filament. If that doesn't work try making a clone of the chip to see if you can make it work that way.
    Epson tried this in a way with their printers. The chips on the ink tanks didn't really read the quantity for each color but rather the average ink usage. Even with wasteful cleaning cycles you can hear enough ink sloshing around each cartridge to get some more pages out 'em.
    As part of the work around people were making cloned chips that read "always full" for their Continuous Ink Systems which was largely due to running external ink bottles or tanks with way higher capacities than what ships with their printers. Funny how Epson took that idea with their new higher capacity ink tank "eco printers". But CIS setups were all about using pigmented inks for constant printing.

    I had a Jr 1.0, and I basically had the same issues you did.
    The biggest problem is the tolerances though. Printing statues and stuff is fine, but printing interlocking parts is VERY difficult as you have to modify the dimensions of the model to compensate for the massive over extrusion.
    Another problem I had was accessing the extruder to clean it. It has a tiny opening where you can shove an included straw brush down into the extruder gears and that works most of the time.
    But if you ran into a filament jam and it really got dirty or you needed to oil something you have to basically take apart the entire top of the printer to get to the extruder assembly, and even that required some frightening wire disconnecting.
    That being said, I replaced this printer outright with a Monoprice Maker Select Mini and I have been very happy with it. *knocks on wood* lol

    hey Devin, I have an awesome idea for 3D printing. It involves a bit of modeling, 3D scanning and moulding. So the idea is to scan someones head and then turn it into an ice cube mould (kind of like those ice ball moulds you can buy) so they can have ice cubes shaped like their head. The mould would be made out of silicone so it's food safe. That would be really awesome!

    If the spool is off, it will think it is still using it and the spool will not print even if there is any plastic left on the spools.

    Good on you for being honest in your review. Telling them what you really think about the Filament DRM and non-interchangeability of the parts. Good for you. Subbed due to honesty.
