This a great reference source for kaftan patterns. As we head into summer again I am rewatching it.

My mum still has her caftans from the 70’s, and she has a very special one gifted to her in 1980 from the Tiwi Islands when my father was building on a Bathurst Island, with traditional screen printed designs by Tiwi artists (from the Tiwi Islands, north of Darwin in the Northern Territory). I’m now very interested in pulling them out with her! Thanks for the inspo❤. Also, I’ve just made my third Reynolds dress from Helen’s Closet, and looking at sewing the same top you’re wearing in this video. Or maybe the Gilbert. Or both😂. Because, I’ve just got some denim to make the Lennox Skirt by Style Arc.

I loved playing dress ups in my mums caftans, they were gorgeous.
Currently cutting out two Megan Nielsen Matilda dresses, one in double gauze and the other in linen. This week I made two Megan Nielson Darling Ranges dresses and two Brumby skirts. It’s been a busy week! The Matilda’s are for me, the others for my very lucky daughter. 🎉 thanks for the interesting video Kristen- happy sewing 🎉

OMG SIMPLICITY 8505. I owned and used that pattern back in the day. Lovely and flowing but snugged up under the bust in the second incarnation. Gorgeous.

Hi Kristen, interesting history of Caftans and how they have changed over the years. I've got the Charlie Caftan on my sewing table as my next project. I have been making Papercut Patterns Sequence Blouse and dress for my work wardrobe. I'm in love with this pattern and how simple it is to make. I've made one blouse in Cotton Voile for a soft look, another in African Wax print for a bold and vibrant look and a dress in a heavy linen viscose. I'm going to make one more dress style for a beach cover up and one last blouse in a silk blend for weekend wear before I move onto The Charlie Caftan in both styles.

I made the Vogue pattern to wear to my son's pre-wedding dinner in a knee length. So enjoyed making this and felt great on the night. When I made this dress it required a zipper in the back, so I put in my first zipper in 30 years.

I have Simplicity 8657 and I like it. I made one in a light denim but I'm planning on another in a more floaty fabric once I find one that speaks to me. It's a real easy make as well since it was one of my first patterns when I started sewing.

37 degrees!! Wow I'd melt!! I think it's too hot in the mid 20s lol interesting timing. I actually bought a few kaftan patterns the other week. Material is very expensive here so I'm reluctant to make the beautiful big floaty ones. I prefer the round necklines only cos I'm so small everything would pop out of V necks lol

Such an interesting look at caftans. Great patterns. I haven’t made any for myself but it reminded me of when I was in my early 20’s an elderly neighbour asked me if I could make her some, copying some worn out purchased ones from the 70’s. I hadn’t seen anything like it before and thought they were so chic and interesting, a little too glamorous for staying at home in but she explained that with mobility issues they were easy to get into and comfortably cool

Regarding your concerns of the sleeves falling off on the Simplicity S8657 caftan, you can add "bra keeper" straps onto the inside shoulder of the caftan. This is a little loop sewn into the shoulder of the caftan that the bras strap goes through, which prevents the shoulder of the garment from moving. No need to worry about the deep V on the garment.

I’m planning to make a caftan style dress to wear to my upcoming getaway to Palm Springs, California, so this video is perfect timing! I think I’ll make one of the big 4 styles, probably Vogue 1735 or vintage Vogue 1886, as I have rose in my pattern collection. I have some lovely silks, linens and viscose to use. I envision wearing my make with big jewelry, flat sandals and a fun straw handbag. Thanks for another great video, complete with some fashion history!

Great video, I have been given some saris by a schoolfriend and didn't know what to do with them but have now decided that a caftan is probably the way to go. I have got the very easy vogue pattern already so will probably use that. My next project however is some Winslow Culottes.

Sydney is missing out on the hotter days this summer. I envy you! Thank you for this, Kristen! PS. I like the look of the Charlie Caftan , though I do own the vintage pattern that you showed, which I need to size up. Currently I'm making a loose top for my husband and an Ocean Daze shirt out of cotton/linen :)

Hello Kristen. Thank you for your very interesting vlog! I was looking at Vogue patterns today and there was a pattern (vintage Vogue) number 1886 that to me is a true caftan, it is just gorgeous and I may take advantage of the current Spotlight sale on Vogue patterns and get it. I have just finished the Fringe Dress by Chalk and Notch patterns from a gorgeous fabric from Super Cheap Fabrics for a birthday gift. My next project is a Carlyle top from the Cashmerette club in a blue and white jersey viscose from Maaidesign. I already made it in a short sleeve from a beautiful cotton jersey from The House of Cloth here in Bendigo. I still haven't sewn up the gorgeous fabrics that I bought from you as yet, they are still folded in my drawer (I just love them). I am also hoping to make a start on the 'Pleats to Meet You' pants by Pattern Emporium out of some double brush poly from Lush Fabrics. Do you have a new Furbaby? Have a great week xxxx P.S When I think of caftans I remember Margot (played by Penelope Keith) from the British series 'The Good Life'

I think alot of people associate smocking with little girl's dresses, similar to the ones Princess Charlotte wears. However, smocking has been around in Adult clothing for a long time, Farmers used to wear smocked tunics, back in the day when patterns weren't made and they'd take a square of fabric and make a tunic, using smocking to gather in the fabric for ease. I love smocking and I love that it is having a resurgence in women's clothing.
So many beautiful caftan ideas. Of course I am partial to the Charlie caftan as my dress has been well worn already this summer and so many great comments every time I wear it.
I'm at the moment trying to get some t shirts made for my son before he heads back to boarding school for his final year of high school. I drafted the pattern, fitted the toile and have fabric/ colour selections. I just now need to implement the design process in pattern form, cut and sew them and I am behind. I'm aiming for five, some striped, some plain and I am wanting to make him a couple of fresh pairs of shorts along with sleepwear and maybe a new dress for myself (to wear to the sundowner they hold for parents). Lots to do, not sure If I'll get everything done but will give it a good crack. Enjoy the warm weather, we're having a heat wave in the west so the heat will hit again later in the week for sure. Hope you have your second swimsuit done by then.

@@thedahliasewciety I taught myself using the Australian Smocking and Embroidery magazine which is now sadly no longer in print. I actually got my first copy of this mag when I was looking for a design for my niece to wear as flower girl to my wedding 21 years ago. I used a beautiful pintucked and embroidered design and then I made a dress for her third birthday using "smocking dots' to pick up the fabric to make pleats. I decided I needed a pleater after that😂. And then when I had my first child I smocked her rompers and dresses and I even made a christening gown. Same for when she was flower girl at my sister's wedding and my then 3 month old son delivered a number three in his blue silk smocked romper🤣. It's basically embroidery on pleated fabric, much easier than it looks and gives such a beautiful result.
