  • Looking for an easy vintage dress to sew in just a few hours? Well, I put myself to the test using the Decades of Style TLC Caftan to see if it was possible to make this "easy" sewing pattern in a day!

It's also the 2 year anniversary since Decades of Style released this pattern 🎉! I love how comfortable, relaxed, and elegant this caftan is, and it definitely has helped me feel more human during these past few weeks. It is an incredibly easy vintage sewing pattern, as you don't know how to sew zippers or buttons, etc. It is definitely an excellent dress pattern for beginners and a perfect dressmaking project for the summer. The only fiddly bits I whine about (and I always whine about these bits - it has nothing to do with the sewing pattern!) are putting on the neck facing and the armholes. Decades of Style does a great job writing their instructions to make this an easy sewing project for beginners. So, if you're looking for an easy vintage style dress that you can make in a day, you want to sew a cute beach cover-up, or are looking for a cute caftan to add to your slow fashion wardrobe - I highly recommend the Decades of Style TLC Caftan! (I am not being paid to say this - I genuinely love this dress pattern and the sewing pattern company.)

I sewed my first (and only) caftan as a beginner in 1972 and felt really daring because I made it from 100% cotton instead of one of the polyesters so popular back then and because I followed a "pattern" in a newsletter that listed sizes of rectangles to cut out instead of actual pattern pieces. I have no idea whether it turned out as great as I thought it did but I was so proud of myself!

I was given a tip over 30 years ago for working with linen. Medical Paper Tape. You know that strange paper-like tape that comes in the little dispenser with the plastic 'tooth' that cuts? Lay our linen out with a T-square and then run the paper tape down the cutting line. Then cut through the paper tape. No dancing linen. I've also had luck using freezer paper, if you have a lot of little pieces to cut out, lightly iron the freezer paper to the back of the linen and you've got stabilized linen that you can 'peel' the freezer paper off.

Love that you mentioned the kimono and then talked about sleeve pockets! That’s actually a thing with kimono, the undergarments worn line the sleeves and are used as pockets!

I’ve always wanted to make and wear a caftan but always thought I’d look too chunky in it. That little contrast panel may do wonders for me!! New subscriber and I’m so in love with you!!! 🥰🥰

I just made mine and I absolutely looooove it. My mom and I are going to have a sewing day and make one for her. It is definitely a one day pattern if you work quickly. I made a mock up one day and make the real think with the pricy linen the second day. I also did it without contrasting fabric.

OMG - My mom made kaftans for us in the early 70s. 100% Polyester single knit with a brightly colored dashiki pattern. If it wasn’t too hot or humid they were so comfortable. And yes, they had pockets. I may have to go through the box of patterns and see if I still have it.

As much as I enjoyed watching you doing your made in a day caftan and listening to your tips and comments, I’ve also been looking at your work room, and being entertained by that, too. It’s so much like mine... except neater than mine currently is; utility shelving, fabric stored under the big work/cutting table, things sorted and stored... in labeled white boxes for easy finding, all the threads out on a big rack (I’m saving up for one of those, by the way), machines separated but convenient, dress form right there...
I keep seeing all these “here’s my sewing room, isn’t it pretty?” pictures and videos and I’m like “where do you put...?” and “I’d have to look through 4 of those to find my...” and “I’d go crazy trying to keep it looking pretty all the time while I make 7 costumes in 6 weeks for my Madrigals group!” *Whimper* I look at them and think “I’d never use it, it’s only for show.” I’m so glad I’m not alone in my lack of prettiness sewing room. 😁

On a more serious note, thank you for sharing your expertise, your insights, your humor, and even your mistakes with us! You present yourself as a competent, confident woman who abides no shit, and those are my favorite kind of people. You inspire me to remain true to myself and pursue my passions. I hope you never stop making! Thank you for your contribution to this world.

I will never make that as my sewing skills and patience would never allow me to succeed, but it is adorable. Looks soft and comfy and perfect to wear around the house in the summer. I’ve wanted a caftan for a long time. They were big in the 70’s. Stores don’t really sell them. Just beach cover up style caftans in yucky fabric.

I think the issue with modern linen is the spinning and not the weaving. Traditional line linen is spun of the very long fibers from very careful retting and prep techniques; while most modern domestic linen is “cottonized” (chopped into shorter lengths) so that it can be spun on the cotton equipment that is more widely used. This results in tow yarn, not nearly as strong or nice as line yarn. The weaving is the same, and done on the same looms; but the spinning is profoundly different. I teach both spinning and weaving, and have studied historical textile production; using nicely spun line yarn (from Sweden) on a very modern loom, I have produced linen fabric that is the equal of the old stuff. It isn’t that hard.
