Summary:
Recorded just over a year after Santana played its historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair performance, the band was fast becoming one of the biggest in the world. They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman."
A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the storied venue had just begun to experiment with staging contemporary concerts on their grounds. Staging a rock concert in a classical venue had yet to be done, so of course the concept of doing so excited Graham. He brought the full-scale Fillmore East production team in, including the Joshua Light Show, and booked a great lineup. This first concert featured B.B King, Jefferson Airplane and The Who, and drew the largest crowd that Tanglewood had ever seen by far.
Buoyed by the event's success, Tanglewood and Graham agreed to stage three similar dates in 1970. The last of these is this show, when Santana headlined after The Voices of East Harlem and the legendary Miles Davis had played (you can hear Mile's set here).
This historic and beautifully recorded performance features a smoking performance by Santana in the last year of their classic lineup, before a young Neal Schon joined the band. We think you'll agree it's an incredible performance by a great band in their prime. - เพลง
I heard Carlos say, in my performances, we don’t want fancy, dancers, clothes, fireworks, colored lights , etc, we work hard together to make good music and I want people to hear every note ! ,now that’s perfection ! ❤ great job man
I think do👍🇵🇱
Saw them in the late 70's in San Francisco's GoldenGate Park playing to a packed audience. PHENOMENAL is an understatement. They had us all spell bound. No need for theatrics when you're EXCEPTIONAL. Truly their music and performance said all that needed to be said. One of the best concerts I've ever seen in my lifetime.
Santana uses those things now

This was my Mom's ring tone for years, she just loved the song...My dad said she put a spell on him with her beautiful smile.

I love this classical lineup. Gregg Rolie is great. He now lives just north of Austin TX (I live in Austin). It's amazing to think one of my childhood idols lives so nearby.
I grew up on it. My father was a massive fan I am as well ( I'm 27)
I love how Carlos and drummer side by side. The two stars of Woodstock performance keeping it together
I'm 27, but I love this band....they are as good as it gets....Carlos Santana is unbelievably gifted
Should have received a Grammy for this. His music is eternal
Written by Peter Green of fleetwood mac.
He finally won a Grammy for the Shaman C.D.
He also got the lifetime achievement award.
WELL DESERVED!!
Bu you’re right, he should have gotten a Grammy for his earlier work.

Santana added a lot of spice to the rock and roll scene in 1970. 51 years later and it still sounds like magic.

What a haunting masterpiece this song will always be. Everyone an integral part to its success. It is what "iconic" means.
The best backline in the history of rock, with a leader in a state of grace interpreting a song that has become one of the great classics of Latin rock. Glorious!!!
Been one of my favorites for years. Plays for the joy and the heartfelt meaning of all his music. He is great because he loves what he does. Great performer
The first time I ever heard Carlos play it sent chills down my spine. I was 12-13 years of age. It still moves me to this day. My generation was able to hear and witness the best music and musicians and now we have TH-cam !!!!
Amen to that
Wish I was your generation.
Yes and as a millennial I fully cherish and appreciate these time portals called TH-cam videos. This performance made my hairy arms stand on end like the back of a Tomcat fighting over pussy. Unreal. It was happiness mixed with a feeling of traumatized.
We might be getting old but we got to see the best bands
We may be as Old as Dirt, but we got to see ALL the Cool Concerts😎
Phenomenal singing here with Gregg Rolie’s voice, & how he enunciates the ‘s’ on lyrics; Stick(s) & Trick(s). Love his expression! ♥️
No internet... didn't know about this concert at Tanglewood, I was 17 . . . and I was living in Connecticut, if I had known I would've been there. What a fantastic performance.
It's really amazing, 50 years has gone and this music still makes many people ears glad.
Good music has not time..... Is eternity.......

I am 62, husband 70. Still listening in August 2023.
Santana (the band) always trips me out. Here you've got a band that, on its surface, appears to be structured around the virtuoso playing of Carlos Santana. But, if you listen to enough of their music, you realize that the genesis and heart of each of their songs is rooted in the ABSOLUTELY insane rhythm section players. So many of Carlos Santana's solos work only because they are buttressed by rhythm that is flawless.
There’s a reason this music is still relevant today. It’s because only so few can really make a guitar sound like a guitar is meant to sound.
YEA FEW....
AND WE KNOW THEM BY THEY NAME! BITCH!😅😅😅🌻🌹💖💖💖🔥🎈
Hahaha. So true.
I always said Carlos Santana's guitar tone is like the wind and what mood the wind is in on any particular day or night .
Totalement vrai.
yep totally right.
Pure talent. Love the guitar and keyboard. The beat is awesome. THIS IS MUSIC!
I have been listening for over 50 years. And I will continue.
This was my jam..along with Buddy Miles.
I'm 63 now and had one opportunity to see Carlos Santana live, it was another level of music. Sadly the smell of marijuana was a bit overwhelming for me and had to move further to the front wich wasn't too good, I'm someone who knows how to appreciate this kind of music without being intoxicated. Always have a taste for different music performances.
I am 23 and grew up listening to Santana because of my parents. LOVE SANTANA!
Lucky you they/He are a National treasure.
Thank you, Peter Green, for writing this. Thank you, Carlos and Gregg, for arranging it to the Santana version. Thank you to the poster for sharing. Lastly - thank you, Carlos, for keeping your style music alive for 53 years!
Additionally, thank you Michael Shrieve for being the youngest drummer [20, at Woodstock] to keep the jazzy beat we all came to know and love!
@wagonmaster 1974 Just got goosebumps w/yur comment. Spot on!
Forgot that Peter Green wrote it!
Оригинал Peter Green,s и Fleetwood Mac звучит гораздо лучше и качественнее, чем у Santana. Santsna испортил песню своим бездарным исполнением. Этим ребятам до Fleetwod Mac, как до Луны.

Me...1m already 71 years old in 2o oktober next month.....I Love Santana...❤❤❤
I can relate....the best of the best...those were the days
I still remember the feeling I had the first time I heard Carlos Santana's guitar. It had a unique feel that conveyed the color and aroma of the guitar. It was strange. “Europe” was also good.
The mark of a great band is they sound just as good live as they do on tape. Santana is exactly that!
with Rob Thomas they are awesome together
Back then most bands recorded live with vocal overdubs

This song will always give me chills. I love how Carlos arranges all the band with looks and they all play in harmony. The bass line kills me man. Love it.

Santana played at my high school dances in the late 70's. I have seen them 15 times, at least. They were a great band then, and still today.

Hello Red rose,
how're you doing,
Your comment caught my attention and that is why I am reaching out to you.
Your fan love for me warms my heart, Thank you!❤️
What BLOWS me AWAY EVERY TIME ESP with this iteration of the band at this time was how PROFESSIONAL THEY WERE AS AN ENSEMBLE!!! THEY WERE ALL LIKE 19, 20, 21 YEARS OLD! THAT'S IT!!!!! Insane! Is it any wonder Bill Graham promoted them as he did? When he first heard/saw them play he knew immediately....what a story. What a band. What a time. My God.
Biil Graham flew them to Woodstock?
~~idunno~~ When 'i' was 16, The Beatles 'started' and 'i' was shocked that John Lennon was maybe '21', like Old?
Also, 'i' give little credit to 'Bill Graham' for a *Discovery*, here or to Most 'Promoters etc.' who *discovered* the 'Greats'. Since, 'i' believe Most 'Music lovers' ...Would Recognize 'Greatness' if 'IT' was Put, right before their Ears, in person especially.
53 years later, bests all the new stuff.

Carlos Santana was one of only a handful of musicians who could duplicate the music recorded in the studio, at a live performance over and over, without error. As a fan I appreciate that effort.
He literally makes a mistake right at the beginning and is flat the entire time.

In the olden days when this song would play we would jump up and dance!! Could feel the music inside of me. Still today enjoy it! Not jumping up and dancing but still feel the beat!!
One of the best titles in the world. Where else does a strict rhythm fit so perfectly with idiosyncratic harmonies and fusion interludes? Where does a song develop into such a furious ending? The end is basically a rock-jazz track of its own.
Bravo, this is my absolute favorite and Carlos Santana, the American guitarist of Mexican origin, who has added a variant to rock music through his Latin rock music, is the greatest for me.
The way is greatest hits album is coordinated so perfectly it all sounds like one long song.
The energy! I saw him as a girl in 1975. 3 hour concert, no breaks. Super human!!

but to be able to compose all these musicians, he is the greatest!!!
