When this came out, I remembered then seeing the sadness in her eyes! I didn’t know until later that she was abused by her mother and sexually abused by others! There’s a very heartbreaking interview on Dr. Phil where she says she was kicked over and over again by her mother and yet another video explains that her mother was the one who cut her hair and made her to believe she was ugly and she repeatedly kicked her in her private area to prevent her from having children! Her mother was a monster!

Everyone is in the world identified with her words and pain!!!!! And that's what makes the song sooooo personal and internationally received like the songs of Stevie Nicks!!!
We were mesmerized by this when it released. Now knowing her tragic childhood and life its even more meaningful as she thought about her abisive mother when she sang it
This is a suspended moment in time for those of us in her generation that hit us so deeply. Her raw performance, rough edges and delicate nuances in her vocals on this made this unforgettable. She was special is an understatement.
Now you've felt it too. It's so beautiful to see people reacting to this song for the first time. You can almost pinpoint when it hits the soul! Sinead was a lot more than this one song. She was the pride of Ireland before the rest of the world could handle her. We knew what you all didn't and Sinead was the voice people weren't ready to hear. Suaimhneas síoraí mo chara ❤
The song is gorgeous, and the video is unforgettable - the vulnerability of sticking with a close-up of Sinéad's expressive face is just incredible. Gorgeous and filled with heart.
This is a song that pulls you in and makes you feel what she is singing. Even though you didn't say anything it was a great reaction, it is such a powerful song that you can't help but not speak over it.
Yeah, this song was a monster. But before it was released, Sinead was being played in the alternative music clubs. She always packed the floor with her songs Mandinka and The Emperor's New Clothes. Definitely worth checking out.
So true! She said in interviews for years after this song that it very nearly destroyed the career she wanted, which was that of a protest singer, not a big commercial success. She also said that it was the photo-tearing that saved her, and put her back on track, even though it made her life very hard for a while. God rest her soul.
My parents loved Sinead forever, since even way before her snl appearance. We’re a very, very, very Irish American family from South Buffalo, and my parents would always play Sinead, Van, U2, etc…as a way of teaching my little brother and I about our Irish culture and heritage. I vividly remember watching her live sessions DVD all the time when I was about 4 or 5 years old and trying to sing and dance along like her. She used her voice and status for so much good and she was such a pioneer in every way possible🤍🕊️
This song was played incessantly for 8-10 years. Deservedly. It went number 1 in the UK and US first, then world- wide. I never tried of it. A one in many millions of songs. Like Prince she was a one in several hundred year performer, musician and talent. Rest now, both of you.
Hello from Dublin, Ireland. The tears in the song are real, at the time of the songs release Sinead had lost her Ma, so as she hits the verse in the song - "All the flowers that you planted Mama, in the back yard" it was there that it her and the tears started flowing.
Sinead struggled with many things, and her relationship with her mother was always a very difficult one. She's discussed it on occasions and it seemed almost as if it was an abusive relationship at times. A few years before this song came out, she and her mother were trying to resolve their relationship, and her mother died in a car accident. I think that's why when she sings about the flowers that her mama planted in the backyard, you see tears come down her face. She will truly be missed. As I always say, Prince may have written the song, but Sinead, owned it.
I STILL cry every time I see and listen to this video. Thank you for the reaction. Thank you to Prince for writing such a beautiful song. My 21 year old son passed away unexpectedly in 2002, and the day we had to bury him, this song came on as we were going to his funeral. Whew, this song hit HARD.
I always cry when I watch the video, too. The emotions in the lyrics and her singing are so deep and powerful 💔 So sorry for your loss 🌸 The day that we scattered my grandfather’s ashes, the radio alarm clock in the hotel woke me up, with the song Angel by Sarah McLachlan. The lyrics of the chorus say “In the arms of the angel, fly away from here, from this dark, cold hotel room…” 💙 Messages from beyond…
RIP lovely lady, this gives me shivers and makes me very emotional RIP Sinead O'Connor, im sure she's at peace with her son Shane, RIP😇💝🌹 Thank You for sharing this with us ✌️
Saw this tour in Toronto and it mostly left 50,000+ people tearing up and sobbing through many parts of the show, but especially this song. Amazing night of music from this gifted and inspired sweetheart. Thank you Sinead for everything you gave the world musically and in every way.
Prince has always been my favorite artist. He was an amazing writer. Each of his songs told a personal story. But I can never see any artist singing his song. She made it her own. It was so powerful & still is. Her life was full of sorrow & turmoil but she lived it on her terms. She will live on through her music just as Prince. I hope she has found the peace she never had in this life. Sinead & Prince will never be forgotten. 💜 🎶 💟 🎼💜
I was 19 when this was released and it hits me in differently during each stage of my life... As a young woman, it gave a voice to the heartbreak that often comes with being a young adult. In mid-life I grew to truly appreciate the raw emotion she shared. Her expressiveness is a rare gift she gave to us. She DID give us a piece of her. I wish I could thank her. As I age (& know more of her history), I see a young woman who channeled her pain into one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. She was truly a beautiful person. I cry every time I hear it. -For her and for every human who ever feels this level of sadness & despair.
Im so happy to see people now responding to her powerful, emotional delivery of this song. Her face. Her eyes...broadcasting everything. sheer powerful emotional performance. Raw emotion,
"Stretched on your grave" is my favourite song of Sinead's. I listened to it on repeat after my grandma died. Sinead helped me through a very dark season of my life.
Always bring the tears flooding whenever I listen to this song. She’d just recently lost her mother before this video was made and you can really feel her emotions coming through. She said it reminded her of her mother. RIP.
Mate i felt the pain in your eyes. No need to explain but i felt it and been there. You will find it , just keep the heart slightly open to be able to receive it ❤
Some other songs of hers you might check out are 'Troy', 'Mandinka', 'The Emperor's New Clothes', and 'Just Like U Said It Would B'. There's also 'I Want Your (Hands On Me)' in a couple of different mixes. She was an astonishingly good singer!
I was 4 turning 5 when this song became popular…. Such a powerful song. I felt it then . And still now 30 plus years later. A song with depth. Hits the ❤️… this song was before it’s time giving way to grunge etc I think.. actually. It’s timeless
She was brilliant. She did all with her emotions. If you want to hear the heart of her voice you should do her live version of this from like 1990 i think. The vocal range is incredible and the emotions are pure and raw.
Thank you for making this video, SalvoG! She was a true one of a kind artist. But this song, and her vocal interpretation, is one for the ages. Glad you gave it a listen.
I wish I could remember the first time I heard alot of these songs. I heard them as a kid in the 90's, on the radio. It would be more meaningful to hear it for the first time as an adult.
Her voice is so angelic it's almost cathedral. She was misunderstood but she never compromised her artistic integrity. She was an amazing artist and I think the world will only now start to grasp her talent and absorb the art that she offered the world
I remember when she tore the pope photo ..I never really tuned in to her ..I was a 60s baby ..was more so a rock fan ..I seem to recall her crying on the video in a hotel room. I remember feeling sad ... Only now have I researched her life. I see her beautiful soul ...an angel ✨ She is back Home. She is FREE ... This world can be so harsh & cruel...it generally starts in childhood .. as we hear it did for this angel. You did your part ..you are reunited with the Father who always loved you ..... Thankyou sisStar ...
This song came on the radio while my dad was on the phone with the funeral directors, arranging my mum's funeral. The line ''All the flowers in the back yard, mama/ All died when you went away'' gets me every time. RIP, Sinead.
I remember when this song debuted in 1990, I was 23 and it gave me chills listening to it, it's 2023, I'm 57 and this song still gives me chills ever single time I listen to it..this iconic song and her iconic voice is simply amazing beautiful!! You're voice touched the whole world Sinead, I pray your soul and spirit is at rest..RIP
She took this song for her own with her incredible Irish voice. To sing with that power, beauty and softness. It didn’t work for Prince though he wrote it. No autotune at all. Beautiful soul and talent. RIP rare beautiful angel
To me it is how she looks right into the camera and you see all of her emotion...it was not acting. This is where a video needs to be with the song. Only a few others fall into this category like (in the living years and I want to feel what Love is).
Sinéad's first ever gig was a few minutes from my house. Her teacher in school got her the gig. She was a national treasure here in Ireland. We love her and miss her. May she rest in peace.
Beautiful tribute to Sinead. Check out her singing Don't cry for me Argentina, Danny Boy, she sang a beautiful song with Van Morrison and Chieftains, lots of beautiful songs as a young woman. She was unique but kept her feet on the ground. So sad to lose such talent. Rest in peace. Ireland and USA
Troy will always be my most fav song by her. She will live on forever in my mind. I don’t know a point in life where I hadn’t heard her. I was 4 years old singing this song. Used to play on mtv in the mornings when I was getting ready for school. Nostalgic.
This has been apart of my life since I was very young. I hadn’t heard it in years, but I still knew every word. She was amazing at being vulnerable, honest and raw. She will be missed. I hope she’s at peace now, I know she lost her son last year and was never ok again.
She made you believe she had lost someone - someone who had left her life and would never return. This resonated so much with people because so many people have had someone leave them at some time or another.
Now, you must hear her version of Sacrifice by Elton John. Simply amazing. Truly. The depth and emotion in her voice is unmatched. Rest in peace, Beautiful Warrior, Sinead. ❤️🕊️
There are a few songs and videos that I have listened to and watched over and over, Tori Amos live version of Winter, Evanescence My Immortal and Sinead O'Conner Nothing Compares 2U. I cry every time. They are all beautiful, heart breaking and so emotionally moving. RIP Sinead. You were so authentic and passionate. You are loved.
I am going to save your reaction so that I can hear and see her over and over again. This song had to be made and performed by her because every human has, or will feel, this abandonment that is soul crippling. The synth and instrumentation stays quite somber and stays around a sustained note with very little motion so that the lyrics and the voice stand out with emotion. The background vocals are beautiful in its simplicity in a minor mode, never overpowering. Her lifts, her falls, her tilde’s, all hit perfectly. One thing that grabs me is her use of dynamics and inflections. You can hear when she is sad. You can hear when she is angry. You can hear her frustrations. You can hear her pleas of false hope that will never let her be. It will haunt her for the rest of her days… and this song haunts my soul. God’s speed Ms. O’Connor. Thank you for leaving us this extraordinary gift. Nothing compares to you.
Hey Salvog, Just FYI, her name is pronounced, Shi-nade. The tear she shed when singing the lyrics, "All the flowers that you planted, Mama! In the back yard. All died and went away." Sinead's mother passed away a few years before, and even though they had a complicated relationship, it's her mom. The lyrics, touched some raw emotions in this recording, for sure. Brilliant song. Phenomenal performance. Sinead, had such a powerful voice, and was such an enormous talent. Thanks for this reaction. Take care.
Sinead sheds a tear just after she mentions her mother in the song - who she was estranged from and she died a few weeks before this recording - her pain and emotion are real...! RIP Sinead O'Connor - her Heart & Soul will live forever through her music...!
Sinead suffered a horrific and tortured (literally) childhood. She had many demons that plagued her. Such a breathtaking face, with so much pain behind those eyes. And although not present here, a ferocity and rage.

The last day of our acquaintance does it for me.... She has some great music!
The last day of our acquaintance is my favorite, but there are about 20 songs of hers that are better than this Prince cover.
Her Universal Mother album is my favorite.
Two legends gave all of us this Masterpiece. Prince wrote it & Sinead took it deep to heart & sung us an all-time great. RIP 🙏
Everyone is in the world identified with her words and pain!!!!! And that's what makes the song sooooo personal and internationally received like the songs of Stevie Nicks!!!
She was thinking of her mother.
Not her words but she definitely made them sound powerful thanks to her performance and backstory
@@caramadra5 True. But everyone can relate to the pain of grief, loss and longing 💔
Prince's words, but her interpretation is beautiful and moving.
@@lavenderbee3611 Exactly. Her emotion, both in the video and audio, is what makes the song so powerful and moving 💙
We were mesmerized by this when it released. Now knowing her tragic childhood and life its even more meaningful as she thought about her abisive mother when she sang it
The simple instrumental along with such an emotional rendition makes it unforgettable. Her voice was much stronger than she showed here.
Thank you for hearing me live by Sinead O'Conner (video in the white dress)! Amazing!
This is a suspended moment in time for those of us in her generation that hit us so deeply. Her raw performance, rough edges and delicate nuances in her vocals on this made this unforgettable. She was special is an understatement.
Penned by the Muse of Creativity on Earth (Prince), Sinead was the prefect person to covey that emotion.
RIP Sinead. Also RIP Randy Meissner of the Eagles who was lead singer on the song Take It To The Limit ❤❤❤ He passed July 26
He died too? Damn! I thought glen Frey was the lead but I’m probably wrong!
Glen Frye was also lead. They each sang lead in different songs . Take It To The Limit was Randy on Lead
@@hobowithawaterpistol9070
Randy Meisner died from complications from COPD
80's music ,always telling a story. so many of us, can relate to this song - losing that special soul mate
This is a song that pulls you in and makes you feel what she is singing.
Even though you didn't say anything it was a great reaction, it is such a powerful song that you can't help but not speak over it.
Timeless beauty timeless classic.
This was a time when people could articulate pain into art instead of anger
I adore her voice and the way she plays with it's texture the light and shade & the harsh and soft
There is an unbelievable live performance of this song she did that is just mind blowing! It was the performance of a lifetime.
Yeah, this song was a monster. But before it was released, Sinead was being played in the alternative music clubs. She always packed the floor with her songs Mandinka and The Emperor's New Clothes. Definitely worth checking out.
I loved dancing to Put Your Hands on Me (with MC Lyte)
Yep, most people forget her album The Lion and the Cobra, I loved that album at the time.
So true! She said in interviews for years after this song that it very nearly destroyed the career she wanted, which was that of a protest singer, not a big commercial success. She also said that it was the photo-tearing that saved her, and put her back on track, even though it made her life very hard for a while. God rest her soul.
Black Boys on Mopeds
Her best song
My parents loved Sinead forever, since even way before her snl appearance. We’re a very, very, very Irish American family from South Buffalo, and my parents would always play Sinead, Van, U2, etc…as a way of teaching my little brother and I about our Irish culture and heritage. I vividly remember watching her live sessions DVD all the time when I was about 4 or 5 years old and trying to sing and dance along like her. She used her voice and status for so much good and she was such a pioneer in every way possible🤍🕊️
It's hard to convey how ginormously huge this song was when it came out. RIP. She was brave how she spoke truth to power.
She's an amazing song ❤
❤️ Rest in peace beautiful Sinead ❤️
This song was played incessantly for 8-10 years. Deservedly. It went number 1 in the UK and US first, then world- wide. I never tried of it. A one in many millions of songs. Like Prince she was a one in several hundred year performer, musician and talent. Rest now, both of you.
Hello from Dublin, Ireland.
The tears in the song are real, at the time of the songs release Sinead had lost her Ma, so as she hits the verse in the song - "All the flowers that you planted Mama, in the back yard" it was there that it her and the tears started flowing.
I feel every note in my soul
Sinead struggled with many things, and her relationship with her mother was always a very difficult one. She's discussed it on occasions and it seemed almost as if it was an abusive relationship at times. A few years before this song came out, she and her mother were trying to resolve their relationship, and her mother died in a car accident. I think that's why when she sings about the flowers that her mama planted in the backyard, you see tears come down her face. She will truly be missed. As I always say, Prince may have written the song, but Sinead, owned it.
Sinead was very badly abused by her mother who in turn was badly abused by the Catholic church.
Prince wrote all the words. It wasn't written about Sineads mother it just happened to fit what had happened in her life.
@@jmk1962 I realized it was not written about Sinead's mother. I'm just saying at that point in the song, it may be why she becomes more emotional.
It wasn’t an almost abusive relationship. By Sinéad’s own account, it was a brutal physically and emotionally abusive relationship…
IIRC, she and her partner- I believe he was a band member- had just split up also. He was the father of one of her children.
She wrote a book called "Rememberings" it was excellent, highly recommend!
❤❤❤
@csutton161 I'm so sorry 😢 ❤ sending you love xx
Sorry for your loss 😔
❤️
The video is amazing, timeless but live is something else, raw, angry, poignantly sad and resonates with everyone.
Over 30 years ago, still can cry hearing this song by her. That's what I call legendary!
We chose this for our wedding..every time this tune is played it envoies so many memories, good and bad never fails to bring a lump to my throat !

Awww, I regret not seeing her live, during that era 💙😭😭
Prince has always been my favorite artist. He was an amazing writer. Each of his songs told a personal story. But I can never see any artist singing his song. She made it her own. It was so powerful & still is. Her life was full of sorrow & turmoil but she lived it on her terms. She will live on through her music just as Prince. I hope she has found the peace she never had in this life. Sinead & Prince will never be forgotten. 💜 🎶 💟 🎼💜
💔Such a voice . Still adore this song❤️Thanks for not talking over her
I was 19 when this was released and it hits me in differently during each stage of my life...
Raw emotion,
Singing the song 🎵 feeling the words ❤
"Stretched on your grave" is my favourite song of Sinead's. I listened to it on repeat after my grandma died. Sinead helped me through a very dark season of my life.
Sorry for your loss 🌸 I love that song 💙
Sorry for your loss…. It’s not her song, she just sang it but didn’t write or compose it.
There is a fabulous TH-cam video of Sinéad performing I am Stretched on your Grave a cappella. Powerful indeed. RIP
Always bring the tears flooding whenever I listen to this song. She’d just recently lost her mother before this video was made and you can really feel her emotions coming through. She said it reminded her of her mother. RIP.
Mate i felt the pain in your eyes. No need to explain but i felt it and been there. You will find it , just keep the heart slightly open to be able to receive it ❤
Yes she delivered this emotionally and I believe she took most things to heart ♥ Simply beautiful 🎉
Such a stunning haunting voice. Beautiful. Everything she ever said was true. She was owed an apology.
Attagirl! Never compromise. She was badass, and her voice - exquisite.
She was a beautiful girl with a beautiful voice. May she rest in peace, finally. No more pain.
I see her beautiful soul ...an angel ✨
She is back Home.
So sorry for your loss 🌸 Sinead said she thought of her deceased mother, every time she sang this song 💔
So sorry, but that ist ja fear, too. One day my mum will leave me alone.... And the flowers of her will die😢
I always loved this song! All three versions. I loved it back when the family sang it, when Sinead sang it and Prince too. I was there for all three.
She represented the tortured part of all of our souls. Thanks for reviewing. No one will replace her and the world is a bit dimmer without her in it.
Sinead always showed her emotions in every song.
This Is the Last Day of Our Acquaintance is my favorite song of hers.
Thanks for listening to this brilliant artist. I will miss her. I highly recommend Three Babies and Last Day of Our Acquaintance.
I liked her on Edge's (U2) Heroin.
first time I heard her and she is amazin. Heaven gained another Angel, shame she passed on
There are a few songs and videos that I have listened to and watched over and over, Tori Amos live version of Winter, Evanescence My Immortal and Sinead O'Conner Nothing Compares 2U. I cry every time. They are all beautiful, heart breaking and so emotionally moving. RIP Sinead. You were so authentic and passionate. You are loved.
Years later, this reminds of my mom soo much, !
And minor detail: her voice is astoundingly unique and brilliant. And she's so beautiful.
It will haunt her for the rest of her days…
and this song haunts my soul. God’s speed Ms. O’Connor. Thank you for leaving us this extraordinary gift. Nothing compares to you.
Hey Salvog,
Just FYI, her name is pronounced, Shi-nade.
The tear she shed when singing the lyrics, "All the flowers that you planted, Mama! In the back yard. All died and went away."
Sinead's mother passed away a few years before, and even though they had a complicated relationship, it's her mom. The lyrics, touched some raw emotions in this recording, for sure.
Brilliant song. Phenomenal performance. Sinead, had such a powerful voice, and was such an enormous talent.
Thanks for this reaction. Take care.
our beautiful Sinead , a Celtic warrior -this was her pop hit , there is so much more to her
Sinead sheds a tear just after she mentions her mother in the song - who she was estranged from and she died a few weeks before this recording - her pain and emotion are real...!
RIP Sinead O'Connor - her Heart & Soul will live forever through her music...!
Number one song worldwide in 1990! I loved this woman, and I miss her so much!!!
Sinead suffered a horrific and tortured (literally) childhood. She had many demons that plagued her. Such a breathtaking face, with so much pain behind those eyes. And although not present here, a ferocity and rage.
She went through so much pain 😢 I’m Gen X and I loved this song when I was in middle school and still do! Beautiful voice & mother! RIP ❤
I always loved her voice. I was 7yrs old when this came out and understood what it was about but never really sat and listened to every single word til just now. Wow. And her voice was just AMAZING. RIP Sinead 💖
She was singing the song to her mom. She lost her mom in 1985 so when she recorded that song she sang it to her.
I saw her live at Meadowbrook in the summer of 1991. Her encore was a capella, and it was amazing. Total silence after for a full five seconds, then thunderous applause. Troubled soul with the voice of an angel. RIP, Ma'am.
