Absolutely! And both this song and Holding Out for a Hero were written by the AMAZING Jim Steinman. I love that he picked up on the insane build up because pretty much ALL of Steinman's songs are like that and they are all amazing.
When you have your heart shattered, the lines “once upon a time I was falling in love now I’m only falling apart” and “once upon a time there was light in my life, now there’s only love in the dark” hit HARD
For a perfect husky, raspy voice you really need to hear me the morning after a heavy night of boozing and cigs. I sound like Leonard Cohen and Barry White's love child. :)
The male vocalist is Canadian Rory Dodd. He worked with songwriter Jim Steinman a lot, providing vocals for many of his songs, and also sang background vocals on some of Meatloaf’s songs that were also written by Steinman. Rory’s voice was phenomenal.
Watching this again in 2024. Its even more gut wrenching when seeing someone else's reaction to hearing it for the first yime. Bonnie and this song were made for each other. I can't imagine anyone else who could do this song justice.

Hey it's your 53 year-old female from sunny California one of your biggest fans here! I am so grateful that you did this song I love love Bonnie Tyler I grew up listening to her. This song always makes me cry always. My mom and my dad got a divorce in 1979 when I was 10 years old and this was my mom's song for my dad and she would play it and cry and cry remember now my mom was only 15 years old when she had me so she was very emotional breaking up and separating from my father at such a young age. About 10 years into the relationship. That all being said every time she played it she would just cry and cry and I remember as a kid feeling so bad trying to take care of my mom to make her feel better which of course we know is not healthy LOL but still I love this song and gives me chills I do it at karaoke it's a very hard song to sing but it's worth it. This is seriously one of the most complex songs ever created with the distinction where every single detail is done to perfection ... the whole songs moves through so many ups and downs and quiet and big epic moments, but it all moves so fluidly .... there are so many instruments involved with the church like organs and lonely piano taking centre stage ... so much going on but every elements manage to shine and have their moments ... and, her raspy voice still manages to take centre stage while aided by that male voice giving an extra dimension of melancholic background vibes .... thats mind boggling ! One of the greatest songs ever put together, its almost miraculous ...
You didn’t mention Jim Steinman who wrote the song. Bonnie had an operation on her throat after her first album. This gave her voice a rasping sound, and she thought her career was over. But her next song “lost in France” was her biggest hits of the 70s.
As much as working through the performers' discographies, Jim Steinman's (and others') works make me think reactors would be well-advised to focus on the songwriters as well.

Jim Steinman actually wrote this for a musical called “Vampires In Love”. The musical never materialized, and the song went to Tyler. It really makes the lyrics take on a whole new meaning. It has such a broadway/operatic feel to all of it.
The musical did in fact happen under the title DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES. It played on Broadway starring Michael Crawford as the vampire. It only played 56 performances as it was a horrible production and panned by the critics. The song is used as the act two opening 'love' duet between the young virgin and the 100+ year old vampire

It’s a serious story faithful to the music. They camped up the US version and tried to add humor which killed it. It’s on TH-cam and is a good watch. Tanz Der Vampire
"It's a Heartache" makes a good intro to Bonnie Tyler's vocal style since the song and production are more straightforward; later hits like "Holding Out For A Hero" are bigger studio projects.

nice reaction, these old school songs and vids brings back some cool memories, Miss Bonnie has such a unique voice, mate you choked on your drink on the drop at the start wait till you hear "holding out for a hero" its so cool and dramatic i advise not to drink while reacting to her.
“In an interview with journalist Mick Wall shortly after the release of Meat Loaf's 2006 album Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose, Steinman stated: "I didn't write [Total Eclipse of the Heart] for anyone but Bonnie." Steinman believed that CBS were expecting him to write something similar to "It's a Heartache", but he had different ideas.”

His big, bombastic, super-dramatic songs just couple very well with these fantastic singers.

Enjoyed this reaction. 🙂❤ Edit: I didn't include Stevie Nicks because I know you're already familiar with her majesty!
This was HUGE my junior year of high school. For our junior/senior prom a buddy and I sat on the floor listening to it over and over again to write down the lyrics since it was the theme song. It's also one of those songs that the video play on MTV made it even greater. Jim Steinman should have got much, much more public credit for writing it. Even when he wrote the songs for the Meatloaf's album Bat Out of Hell his name was shamefully in very small print.
The second vocal is Jim Steinman...also the writer of the song. In the first part of the first verse she mentioned falling into fantasy. The entire video is that fantasy. Jim Steinman also produced the video. His feeling is...go big or don't bother.
I used to drive along the A30 up Egham Hill going towards Virginia Waters in the UK As you went up Egham Hill on the left hand side was Holloway College where this video was filmed just always associated it with this track
Such a great old song, by a great singer... LOVED this when it first came out. Bonnie Tyler... awesome. Your confusion was actually hilarius! 😂 I loved watching your attempts to figure out, what the heck!! ✌ (Jodi/Child of the 60s)
Thank goodness for TH-cam, and for appreciative reactors such as you, SalvoG. As you're beginning to understand, there was so much brilliant, wonderful, and diverse popular music for many decades... so sad young people today have no clue what they're missing, unless they're on TH-cam. I don't often request particular music, but I wish you'd give the Moody Blues a close inspection in addition to "Nights In White Satin," pretty much the only song reacted to these days. They had countless beautiful songs. Thank you!
I never seen the video before. I knew what Bonnie Tyler looked like. But that video!!! Was that directed by the same director as The Lost boys? Seems to be very similar in style.

Tire tracks and broken hearts, it's a jungle out there, faster than the speed of night, it's a heartache
I used to drive along the A30 up Egham Hill going towards Virginia Waters in the UK
As you went up Egham Hill on the left hand side was Holloway College where this video was filmed just always associated it with this track
This reminds me that you still need to hear Pat Benetar. Amazing voice with lots of great songs to check out - I suggest starting with “ Heartbreaker”
LOVE her! Such a powerful voice. Fire and Ice, Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Promises in the Dark, You Better Run, All Fired Up, the list continues...
..and "Hell Is For Children" 🤘
Thank you!
Awesomeness. ❤
I never seen the video before. I knew what Bonnie Tyler looked like. But that video!!! Was that directed by the same director as The Lost boys? Seems to be very similar in style.
My absolute favorite song as a teenager. This was Jim Steinman at his best!
I am late on this one but you never fail as man and a real human SalvoG.
That video is nuts . . .but as kids, we loved every minute of it.
sentí tu emoción como la mía me encantó tu reacción
Jim Steinman is the man behind the song. He wrote many operatic pop songs with Meatloaf, and others.
Hey wait a minute!!! Have you been peeking at my personal Playlist.?!!! No, but thank you for this one. I hope you enjoy.
Was it all just a dream?…or was it?
Good stuff.
She also did a song with mike Oldfield called island. Its a brilliant track.
