I don't know specifically about MAD's mocking O'Connor, but I'm guessing it was just part of the backlash she received for calling out the Church and the Pope for the cover up of the rampant child abuse, molestation and rape by priests and other Church authorities, and the Church's protection, for many years, of the perpetrators. She did this in her appearance on SNL, which is probably why SNL came to mind for you in connection with her.
For telling a truth people didn't want to hear, she was cruelly and hatefully reviled, mocked, threatened and derided-- figuratively crucified-- ironically receiving the figurative version, for her truth telling, as Jesus literally received for his.
Here's an excerpt about it from a New York Times article:
July 27, 2023
Americans began to grapple with a nationwide epidemic of child abuse in Catholic parishes and other religious organizations in 2002, after a landmark Boston Globe investigation revealed a pattern of misdeeds and cover-ups in Boston that went back decades.
Ten years earlier, Sinead O’Connor became a pop culture pariah in the United States for an on-air protest intended to raise awareness of the same problem.
The backlash to her actions - tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II on “Saturday Night Live” and then shouting “Fight the real enemy!” - was swift.
Prominent Americans, including celebrities like Madonna and Joe Pesci, denounced her. Protesters brought a 30-ton steamroller to crush her cassettes in Rockefeller Center. Catholic leaders were outraged, including some who were forced to resign years later for their roles in covering up abuse.
Many people in America derided her as “somebody looking for attention,” said Cahir O’Doherty, the arts editor of The Irish Voice, an Irish diaspora newspaper in New York City. “It never occurred to anyone that maybe she had a point,” he added.
www.nytimes.com/2023/07/27/nyregion/sinead-oconnor-childhood-abuse.html#:~:text=Ten%20years%20earlier%2C%20Sinead%20O,enemy!%E2%80%9D%20%E2%80%94%20was%20swift.
p.s. I think she's more beautiful with very short hair, which, imho, is often the case for people with very beautiful, or very interesting (or both) features.
Her appearance on SNL when she tore up the Popes photo on TV and openly ousted the catholic church is the reason SNL continues to make fun of her. 😢 they ruined her life over speaking about the truth back then, hmmm sounds like today's world😢. She has an angelic voice. Very very beautiful lady. RIP Sinead.
She does an excellent live cover of Mother by Pink Floyd, the Live in Berlin 91 with Roger Waters. ❤well worth checking it out.
Prince wrote this song, but I think the Chris Cornell cover is better You should check it out
The studio version does not compare to her live as you surmised. Here's an incredible example of her performing this live; no autotune.. and it's so much better.
th-cam.com/video/NAOKzvL8dgk/w-d-xo.html
She was a child abuse victim and was tired of of being sexually objectified as a female performer. So she shaved her head in hopes of stopping the negative attention. Obviously, that didn’t work…she’s as beautiful as ever. Then her SNL performance made her a pariah. She got death threats etc. She told the truth but continued to be vilified. She was 100% right about exposing Catholic Church’s coverups and is owed an apology by all who taunted her. Rest in love Sinead. ❤
And she was threatened by the likes of Joe Pesci and Frank Sinatra....😮
@@herrglad9726 Right! Disgusting . But I think you meant Joe Piscopo.
Need to watch “Troy” about her abuse from her mother.
Forgot to mention that Sinead’s abuser was her own mother, her 17 year old son committed suicide and Sinead was diagnosed as bipolar.
“It was dangerous to be pretty too, because I kept getting raped and molested everywhere I went.”-Sinead O’Connor
Beautiful reaction to a beautiful song. Had this song played at my wife’s funeral 5 years ago. This the first time I have been able to listen to it again. Still cried like a baby. RIP to Sinead, Prince, and my dear Katrina.
Blessings to you and your Katrina
❤❤❤
❤😢
I'm so sorry for yr loss😢. ❤
Respect.
This song was written by Prince. Made famous by Sinéad and covered beautifully by Chris Cornell.
Sinéad died recently. She was a unique and amazing artist whose career suffered after she based the Catholic Church on SNL ( for priests sexual abuse cover up.) She was ahead of her time. In recent years She struggle with mental health issues exacerbated by the death of her 17 year old son to suicide last year.
RIP to an amazing artist, with a powerful voice and a gentle soul.
Sad that every person who wrote or covered this song has died.
I think this was one of the best of the covers that Chris Cornell did.
They made fun of her because she was willing to tell truths others were not ready for. Rip up a picture of the Pope on SNL? Twenty years later we learn about clergy abuse and the Magdalene Launderies. Then there's the Bobcat Goldthwait line, "If she's not a witch, I'm a toaster!"
Gone too soon to suicide. Rest in peace.
I still cry when I watch this. Her life was so sad especially after her SNL performance. She was right and as we hear more and more about the cover ups, I think she would get a different reaction today. She was a tortured soul and loosing her son to suicide made things worse. She didn’t deserve to die feeling that way.
Only forgotten first performers are left. One of them long rumored to be the song's inspiration.
Thank you from Ireland for your reaction☘We are mourning our beautiful Daughter Sinéad💔
Sinéad was a force of nature with unmatched talent, but she was also very fragile. Please react to her live acapella performance of 'I Am Stretched On Your Grave' - a 17th-century Irish poem that she transformed with just her voice and a 'beat box' sample; She was keening for our Country & it is pure perfection.
The media and music industry cruelly shunned her for speaking THE TRUTH about the catholic abuse of innocent Irish children, including herself & she was eventually proven CORRECT - now an acknowledged fact globally.
But the damage was already done to her and her career. I hope they're proud of their relentless victim shaming of a
23 year old girl who was brave enough to speak out.
Rest easy sweet Sinéad - I hope you're finally at peace with your beloved son, Shane💚
Very well said.
Her greatest cover is of Mother by Pink Floyd live.
💚
So true. Stretched on your grave is absolutely one of the best songs!! I love the beat to it. I play it in the morning getting ready for work lol. She is legend.
@irishguy20000you should hear her version of all kinds of everything with Terry hall from the specials, it's too good and funny, my all time favourite cover is Tallahatchi bridge it is class
I remember when this came out in 1990. People were gobsmacked.
As for Sinéad ripping up the Pope’s picture, she was calling him out for turning a blind eye to all the sexual abuse by the Catholic clergy…and it continued to be covered up for a LONG time until the incidents were just to frequent to ignore any more. She was RIGHT but she paid a heavy price for her bravery. Such a shame.
Pronounced 'Shinade' - and its such a hauntingly beautiful song.
Thank you for the clarification!
Song Prince wrote, makes it more incredible
Absolute classic. Written by the master, Prince, put on the map by Sinead and perfected by Chris Cornell. All May they rest in peace.
Written and performed by Prince. There's an official VEVO video of Prince and The New Power Generation (Prince - Nothing Compares 2 U / Live at Paisley Park 1999). There are a couple other live videos of Prince performing as well. He wrote the song in 1984. I think he once used this as an example of what "covered" means - as in a song is so covered, the original artist starts to be forgotten. That said, Sinead did a beautiful rendition, and Chris Cornell's is hauntingly stunning. RIP to all three.
@@karenfryberger4260 I've watched Prince playing this in the summer of 91.
Wow, all three of them. R.I.P.
Damn that last sentence made me so sad... RIP all 3 💔
I’d have to say Sinead Perfected it. Chris had a good stepped down performance of it but I wouldn’t say it’s better than Sinead
I still think the whole world owes her a giant apology. Unfortunately she is no longer here to hear it.
She was obviously an extremely sensitive person, and I think all the gag jokes and hate that wrecked her life most very likely shortened her life. She put herself ALL THE WAY OUT THERE, and what happened back to her? Being mean to someone who can’t even see you is just plain-ass BAD. Like, DONT DO IT, okay?
And do NOT listen to people who tell you to kill yourself either, okay?
SHE WAS SO PRETTY. Drop-dead gorgeous!
How could anyone watch her face and hear what she’s saying, then make fun of her. What was wrong with everybody??
Personally, she stunned me from the start, that first day this video came out on MTV all those years ago. And it still does. ❤️ RIP
“Like a bird without a song” one of the best descriptions of being lonely , devastated from heartbreak!
I thought it was ‘ a burn without the sun’! Haha!
She was absolutely stunning in this video. Her looks and her voice were insane. This song was made for her. ❤ Crazy that this song is 30+ years old and it still sounds so fresh everytime I hear it.
You will not be disappointed. Her voice was angelic. This track is so beautiful and haunting. It’s a shame that her career was derailed because of her outspokenness. People lost their minds when she ripped up that picture of the Pope. Just found your channel, and I’ve had the absolute best time watching your reactions. Just saw Heart cover of Led Zeppelin. One of the most moving performances I’ve ever heard! Keep ‘em coming!
Its just a shame that it took so long for everything she was saying about he Church to be proven 100% facts. What a career she could have had.
I was maybe 10 or 11 yrs old when I watched her rip that picture up onstage. I didn't really comprehend what it meant, but I could tell that what she was doing was sacrificial and it meant a lot to her. Later on i found out that she was trying to protect children and wanted justice for the abused. She was a hero
@@jmeck1381 Sadly, predators dont like being outed.
@@dalehammers4425 - She was ahead of her time ! We all know now what a Demon the pope is and always has been !!!
@@dalehammers4425 💯 facts!
Love the attitudes she displays while singing with such passion. Sinead veers from fierce to tender over and over again interpreting the lyrics. Captivating.
Her song Troy is a masterpiece. Her vocals on that track are stunning. She wrote it at a very young age. That makes the track even more impressive. I would recommend the official video since it is the full length version.
Troy was my introduction to Sinead. It is so haunting when you listen to her talk about writing it to deal with the abuse from her mother.
Troy is a masterpiece
She didn't write the song, Prince did
@@williamwagner5673 what the song Troy ?
@@williamwagner5673 Prince wrote Nothing Compares 2 U. Sinead wrote “Troy.” I was recommending the song “Troy.”
What kills it for me is near the end, when the tear rolls down her cheek. I have yet to hear any of the reactors who have viewed the same video mention it. That moment proves how passionate she is about the lyrics of the song. She was an amazing woman, they broke the mould when Sinéad entered this world.
She had one of the BEST voices of her generation ! She is and will continue to be missed.
No she didn’t. She just had 1 great song. Sorry!
@@johnr4550 You NEED to check her out a little better
The Lion and the Cobra is one of my top 10 all time fav albums. Her other songs, Mandinka, Troy, Jackie, I Want Your (Hands on Me), I am Stretched on Your Grave...love them all.🖤
It's an incredible debut album!
That album is a masterpiece. She wrote most of those songs at 16 and at 19 her produced the album
Sinead O’Connor an Irish ☘️ singer songwriter, died recently age 56, Nothing Compares To You written by the legendary artist Prince , Sinead leaves a vast legacy that includes the only person to do a Prince song better than Prince, Nothing Compares To You became a No 1 hit in 17 countries and gained Sinead a Grammy, great reaction thanks 🙏
I saw her perform in Berlin, at an outdoor ampitheater. Her voice was so powerful that she did not use a microphone. It was an amazing concert.
Her performance of Mother by Pink Floyd is magical.
All the goosebumps every time I hear this song. RIP Sinead, Prince and Chris 💚🤟🕯
A beautiful but very complicated woman with the most Angelic voice! This is so good, brings back memories for sure. Thanks Polo.
Love me a complicated woman
I’d say she isn’t the complicated one. Trying to survive the complicated ones.
@@Shawney-jf6kcYES….she was abused by her mother for years…when she cries in this video she once said it had to do with her mother. Unfortunately I GET IT!
She's beautiful. Her voice is beautiful. Her end was so sad. Losing her son. She never got past it, then she died. Heartbroken.
I got chills the first time I heard Sinead sing this ❤ Prince's version was a little different in the beginning. Prince sang it's been 7 hours and 13 days. Sinead added a couple of days lol.
My new favorite quote from her is "They tried to bury me. But they didn't realize i am a seed."
She was right about so many things, and took so much undeserved heat for it all. She was ahead of her time... child abuse, misogyny, racism, mental health... on and on. she fought for her whole life to right the wrongs she saw in the world, and never backed down. RIP, Sinéad, you were really were a seed, still sending up life everywhere.
❤
My heart breaks that she actually died of a broken heart losing her son, the pain she must have felt. Rest now xx
Thank you Prince for writing such a heartbreaking and beautiful ballad.
Yes! You read my mind. You absolutely need to hear this live. There is an awesome live version but I'll have to find the right one.
Great artist and a great song written by Prince. RIP to both of them
Hopefully you’ve seen the live performance of this the best one. It is truly one of the best live performances of any song by anyone in recorded history and I’m not being dramatic.
Prince is one of the greatest artists ever and the best performer I’ve seen live and you can feel him all over this track. The ultimate breakup song of 1990. RIP to Prince and Sinéad.
Omg Polo, there is DEFINITELY a live version where she kills it! Her energy was fantastic. I’m sure the requester told you that Prince wrote the song ❤. This song still gives me goosebumps after all these years! I had (still have) her Lion and Cobra album. And I’ve always thought she was beautiful without the hair; her face can pull it off, and she didn’t want to be objectified, which is what most of today’s female artists seem to want. Much sexier if you don’t look like you are trying too hard! Here’s the link to the live performance:
th-cam.com/video/NAOKzvL8dgk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hQCW68YlfeoZ58rT
Piece of trivia - Prince was an AMAZINGLY unselfish artist. He has 6 or 7 songs of his own which were number 1 hits by other artists. Obviously this one, but others including Manic Monday by the Bengals (which, like others if I am not mistaken, he never even recorded, just wrote it and gave it to them, free of charge, because he thought they would kill it, which they obviously did).
Her entire first album is incredible..THE LION AND THE COBRA
Beautiful powerful voice. And a great person.
Sinead died the 26th of July 2023. She was one of my heroes when I grew up. Her voice was amazing. There’s a recent documentary about her life that is so impressive.
Sinead..what a voice! Not many out there like that. That song has a story if you look.
You just looked into the most beautiful eyes. Blew me away when I first listened to hear at the age of 18. A long long time ago. Edit: Live she was unbelievable! The voice, the performance just everything.
I love Sinead so much. What an angelic voice.
Thank you for this reaction!!! She is one of my heroes!! She was willing to sacrifice her career for her beliefs and she called out the Catholic Church, and the Pope on nation wide TV for the ongoing abuse. She ripped a picture of the Pope in half on SNL. She was a beautiful person!! 🎶🎼🎵🎸🥁🎹🎤🔥🔥💜💜💜 By the way, Prince wrote this and gifted it to Sinead and she made it famous. But you should hear Chris Cornell's version!! Definitely something to check out!!
I don't know if he "gifted" it to her, according to an interview she did with Pierce Morgan a few years back, she said when she ran into Prince after recording this song he chased her around her car and tried to beat her up.. apparently it was a deal made between record labels and he was not happy with her version.
@@VitaminJay12 wow!!! I read it on the internet somewhere.....thanks for the info!! I still like Chris Cornell's version the best!!😉😉
And she was right!
@@jmeck1381 which "she"? 😉🤣
@@marcieharreld286 so, I am a Prince fan, but of course I meant the other "she"
She was so beautiful. Inside and out. Her voice is timeless. Rip Sinead 😢 xxx
She has an amazing voice! Thanks for checking this out.
Written by Prince... perfected by this beautiful soul... always will wish they would have performed it together.
She told the truth about more than just the church and she burned for it while we all watched, laughing as SNL added fuel. Rest in love and power, Sinead. Thank you for reacting to this
Ppl initially made fun of her for the short hair (how dare someone so beautiful shave their hair?!?) plus she was outspoken and conflicted in her life and it was all made public. She just passed a couple months ago and I will always love this song and her spirit 💕
Beautiful Irish woman, there is a very nice documentary on her. Her voice is magnificent.
You need to watch Disturbed sing SOUND OF SILENCE
when she sang about the flowers withering, it reminded her of her Mum she had lost and started to cry. perfect for this simple vid
Hi Polo, Prince wrote this song and Sinead O’Connor covered it and brought it to the public. Amazing song and performance from the 80’s!!!
Sinead was a beautiful woman and soul with a beautiful voice, a sad life and hard. R.I.P. Sinead.
Try Shakespears Sister "Stay" around the same time, different!!!
Thanks for this one. I only THOUGHT I had heard this song before. I now realize I only knew the short chorus. What a song!
Another song that most people dont know was written by PRINCE,sung beautifully by Sinead. Thanks,T
I remember when this song was released, back in 1990. The music world was captivated.... We heard it on the radio, we saw the video on MTV. She was lovely, the voice was awesome & the song & lyrics so meaningful. R.I.P.
Prince wrote this song about his housekeeper. She had to leave to take care of family. He missed her greatly. She would cook his favorite dishes, worked in the garden and placed fresh flowers around the house all the time. She made a home for him and was someone to come home to after the long road. She was like a mother to him and cared for him like no one else could or understand 💕
One of my favorites ever. RIP, beautiful Sinead ❤
Polo. Since you asked in this video. Check out Sinead's performance of her song Troy at the Pinkpop festival (1988, I believe, don't quote me). It's live, raw and worth the listen. She only showed some of her range in this video but Troy, you see it all. So talented.
Voice of an angel❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If you’ve ever had your heart broken, ever, and you listen to this song alone and it doesn’t choke you up, you may not have a pulse.
She made an awesome reggae compilation, through down your arms is the name fantastic.
I absolutely love this song. I still listen to it now, and it still touches my heart.
The song Mandinka is fun, but it’s also a great example of the tremendous range of her voice. Well worth a listen!
Loved her loved her passion ✊️
Prince wrote this song. Always loved it. Used to come on MTV a couple times an hour back in the day. Beautiful sad song
Greatest love song ever❤
Such a beautiful girl. Really sad she's gone.
1990 release date. Apparently a PRINCE cover.
She was a touch older than me. I remember this video coming out and her hair cut was a shock back then !
She was a stunning performer, and her hair made her even more beautiful .. so sad .. Thanks Prince ..
The most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen this woman. May she Rest In Peace.
Sad sad sad sad story. Great singer. Great song
Great reaction to a classic 👍written by Prince for his then band 'the family' in 1985 it was re released by Sinead in 1990 and is without doubt a beautiful track✌️
The Chieftains and Sinéad O’Connor perform ‘The Foggy Dew’ at the IRMA Awards.😪❤🇺🇸

The Lion and the Cobra, which came out before this song, is one of the best albums ever made. Every song is incredible.
Probably the most beautiful love song ever written. #Prince
A song penned by Prince , what a hit it was , beautiful , sad , song , lost her recently , rip Sinaed (shanayd) say ,
RIP Sinead. Try her 'Troy' (official version), it's really an underrated masterpiece IMO
I've always been a fan of Sinead O'Connor. May she rest in peace
gorgeous version of this song, great reaction. 🙂she actually cut her hair off in a deliberate attempt to prevent her label and the industry from pitching her as an attractive young singer and selling records based on her looks. like you said, she still looked beautiful. 🙂
for me, i love a couple of live performances... "the foggy dew" w/ the chieftans, and "thank you". the latter has her on stage with her pixie cut, in a full length lace white dress...and boots. 🥰🙂 she sounds so beautiful in those recordings.
her performance of "war" by bob marley on SNL is now very well known. at the time she was loathed, threatened, and her career essentially ended because she chose to use the platform to speak the truth when no one else would. she was ahead by decades. so many people / victims owe her a debt of gratitude for speaking out...she was just a kid and it cost her so much.
She passed away in July at the age of 56. She had mental health issues her whole career. She really had a unique voice, I find it ethereal.
A great Prince song done masterfully by Sinead.
You should check out a live version. She's incredible.
I think a lot of people have explained this video really well. To answer your question about a live performance, there is one in which she performs this track live at the Viña del Mar festival in Chile, shortly after Pinochet had been deposed and the Chilean people were full of hope and really vibed with her as she poured out her heart and soul on the stage. She poured so much of herself into every performance that I'm surprised there was anything of her left when she passed.
❤REST IN PEACE...so saddened by your demise😢but thankful for you sharing your music
Remember something about freaking out on the POPE 😮 WENT NUTS
What a beautiful voice. Unfortunately, she was also a very tortured soul. May she be together with her son and rest in peace
Gorgeous. So talented. Strong message. Corrupt Media would of course make fun of her.
She's beautiful without hair!
Prince written song...sung by a beautiful voice
Love what you’re doing. As an old white guy, about to turn 54, I’ve been listening to Sinead since she released her first album around 1990, along with all of the stuff you’re discovering like PRIMUS and such. Big fan of yours. I can’t help but think you’re doing your part in breaking down the racial walls in this world and seeing there are cool things about all races, especially in music. You are a light in this world.
She was beautiful without hair, too. RIP Sinead.
My favorite first line ever, “It’s been seven hours, and fifteen days…”
It says so much more than if it said, ‘It’s been fifteen days, and seven hours…’ because when you are that grief stricken it’s the minutes that hurt most; the days just blend together.
Dam, Prince could write. But she sailed this better than he probably felt it in the first place.
This song was released before she tore up the photo of the pope on SNL. It's unfortunate because she was demonized and SNL took it and made her a joke. She had a tough life but was had a beautiful voice and was an authentic person. She said what she believed.
And she was right.
@@nomiddled7290exactly what I was going to say
She was protesting the never ending sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. She was a brave beautiful soul. ❤
