Mr Campbell’s voice was pitch perfect. No auto tune, no studio tricks. Add to that, he was one of the greatest guitarists of the 20th century. He had so much talent that he made this all seem effortless. This is NOT an easy song to sing.
Just to illustrate how amazing Johnny Carson's band was, think about this for a second. Glen Campbell had been working on another program most of the day and thus must not have been able to practice during Johnny's dress rehearsal that night. Thus he walked out and did the song and the band backed him up with little to no rehearsal time themselves. Will we ever have days like that again?
Check out Johnny Mathis singing Pieces of Dreams on Johny Carson, the band, his voice a special night. Singers today would never attempt this song, they don't have the vocal skills.
I can still see the boy in Glen. That chin dimple has made me smile over the last.....50 years, maybe 49. I remember hearing him first on my mom's kitchen radio during the summer if I actually came inside. That was where I could occasionally find some great music when she wasn't there to listen to her music...the "elevator music" is what I always called it. I rode the school bus all the way through high school, and when the buses finally had radios in them, the kids had their say on what got played. I guess the driver thought it would calm us all down, lol. I was always the first kid on and the last kid off. I never minded riding the bus. There was always fun to be had except for a driver we had when I was in high school. He kicked one kid off and made him walk over a mile home. Those of us still on the bus just looked at each other with our mouths hanging open. Nobody said a word.
Yeah, I was also looking for that slot where Jonny Carson came put dressed as a rhinestone cowboy and was supposedly singing the song He wasn't really singing it but it was one of the funniest JC skits I've ever seen.
That's right. I read Glen's autobiography and he said recording this song was the official end of the marriage. Why she hated it so much I don't know. Looks like Glen had the last laugh!
Glen Campbell-ex-Beach Boy. I remember the Carson skit where he sings Rhinestone Cowboy and at the end, he falls off the burro he's mounted on. Great stuff. I'll check my Best of Carson videos and see if it's there.
If things were similar to as they are now, the Tonight Show films about 6pm pacific time. If Glen was in studio to work on another program, and he got the note to act as a replacement then I can't imagine that they would have had time to do more than a single rehearsal ahead of time. Which is massively impressive.
no, that is not his daughter. That is Ann White, she sang backup with Glen on stage for about 3 years (she's also seen on the Live at Royal Festival Hall performances)
My prime time has gone with Glen. Soon or later, our good time will be gone just like electrical wsitch turned of. There will be no haven nor reincarnation. Well, that's the way will be. Glen, be healthy!
I'm curious, and I don't want to sound rude, but why is "I'll be me" at the beginning? Does it have anything to do with the documentary? I have watched that so many times. I lost my mom to Alzheimer's, so my question is not meant to offend.
Hi! You weren't rude at all and it's a good question. The answer is, part of the footage in this you tube is actually shown in I'll Be Me where Johnny Carson introduces Glen by holding up the album.
Talented and absolutely gorgeous. Great song plus everything else he sang was great.

The 70's were epic, and so was Glen.
In later concerts he'd say that this is the song that brought him back. It was a huge hit in '75.
Because of your music, you'll never really be gone, Glen. May you sing with the angels forever, you beautiful man. RIP dear sir.

one of his signature songs!! He killed it with his extraordinary voice!

Beautiful voice! Wonderful song!
Glen could sing the phonebook. I was fortunate to see him in 2011 in concert, before the dementia really set in.
Bless.................
god bless you glen what a talent.
Man did he rock this one out!
Takes me back to high school when we were on a bus headed to a game or track meet somewhere. The 70's had the best music hands down.
I'm

Johnny Carson hilariously spoofed Rhinestone Cowboy, but I haven't been able to find a YT video of that skit.
AWesome
Caray q recuerdos de esta canción éxito del año 76 o del 77 aparte la voz de Glen estupenda
Glen will get to play for Johnny again and they can raise 'H' at the Las Vegas Hilton, just like back in the old days...
Nice post, too -
We need someone to upload Johnny's version of this! It was hilarious! Where the hell is it? It's nowhere to be found!
@NorwoodGlen It is there now. I can't post the link here but do a search again. In fact it's the video that brought me here.

Even the Indians like this song. Ha! ha!
When people had talent.
That's good, but I am looking for the video of Johnny Carson singing Rhinestone Cowboy. Has anyone seen it recently?
@Barticus88 Would like to see it myself. Have never seen it uploaded on You Tube.
@Barticus88 Go search now, that was the video that brought me here. =)
Hello girls...
Sorry good
Why would you think they hadn't had time to rehearse? Just because Glenn wasn't available wouldn't mean they couldn't rehearse.
I think the gals on the left and right are Stevie wonders sisters
Johnny Carson did this song on a horse were can I find it
